Ice bathing and cold-water therapy have seemingly taken over the wellness world. What was once primarily utilized by professional and elite athletes as a recovery routine has since gone totally mainstream, and is no longer an expensive treatment you have to book at a luxury spa to try. The at-home ice bath revolution is here, and it’s brr-illiant.

A number of brands have surfaced to accommodate the demand for at-home ice baths, making it easier than ever to take daily dips in your own backyard. This is great news for those who don’t live by an ocean or lake to experience “polar plunges”, or don’t want to spend the money on a wellness studio membership in order to have access to an ice bath.

The benefits of ice baths

Though the physical and mental health benefits that people experience from cold-water immersion are entirely unique to each individual and not exactly a foolproof cure-all for everyone, research indicates deliberate cold exposure can benefit the human body and mind.

Michael Bourgoyne, DPT, CNS, a physical therapist at Home Health in Salt Lake City, UT, says that a cold plunge is essentially cryotherapy (cold therapy), which is known to induce a parasympathetic response in the body by stimulating the vagus nerve. That icy jolt to the system can slow your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and cortisol levels, and ultimately, reduce inflammation and stress in the body.

According to Bourgoyne, after lowering your core body temperature down in an ice bath, your blood vessels work to re-dilate as your body warms back up and readjusts its temperature back to normal levels, thus increasing circulation throughout the body. After a teeth-chattering plunge, you may also notice an invigorating sensation similar to that of a “runner’s high”—some studies suggest that a rush of chemicals like dopamine can be triggered by a chilly soak.

As noted, the benefits can differ from person to person. For example, Adam Klink, director of community and functional fitness coach at Bare Performance Nutrition, invested in an at-home ice bath to counteract his busy days and intense training. He notes the physical benefits, like soothing inflammation and aching muscles, but particularly enjoys the mental benefits of cold plunging, which he describes as a driving force to get him to do something outside of his comfort zone every day.

“Nothing makes me more uncomfortable than sitting in freezing water and I wanted to build some extra mental fortitude, amongst other things,” he says. “My mental capacity has improved noticeably. Hopping in the cold water first thing in the morning makes anything that comes my way the rest of the day that much easier. Once I hop out, I feel an endorphin rush and am quickly awake and alert to start the day.”

When Well+Good’s associate commerce editor, Francesca Krempa, took an ice bath every day for two weeks, she noted the opposite—also confirmed icing made a big difference on her body, especially her joints.

“Ice bathing can be relaxing, when you train up to 30-degree water, of course,” she wrote in a review. “And I did feel better, at least physically. While I didn’t notice a difference in my anxiety or depression levels, my muscles felt great. My knees particularly felt looser and less angry than they had all winter, particularly on the days when I lasted three minutes or more.”

If you are ready to give it a whirl, these are the best at-home ice baths worth taking the plunge in.

At-home ice bath Q&A

Before you get started, Bourgoyne says it’s a good idea to consult a medical doctor to determine it’s safe before taking your first dip, especially if you have family or personal history with heart, vascular, or nerve conditions, if you are pregnant, or have other conditions that are a concern with cold or water.

How cold should the water be to see the benefits?

There’s really no definitive answer, as some people tolerate cold better than others. As to not completely shock your body, experts recommend starting out with warmer temperatures in the 45-55<<°F range before working down to colder temps (35-39°F).

“Gradual cold exposure and listening to the body, never forcing, is the way to build cold tolerance until you are ready to try an ice bath,” Andri Einarrson, a certified Wim Hof instructor, leads the cold water therapy experience on adventure travel company Flash Pack’s Unknown Iceland trip, previously told us. “What you can do is put cold water (no ice) in your [tub] and see if you manage to be as relaxed as if it was hot water. If not, keep with cold showers until you manage to go into the [tub] in total relaxation.”

How long should you take an ice bath for?

This will also vary from person to person depending on their experience level, threshold, and the temperature of the water. But the colder the stimulus, the shorter amount of time you need to expose yourself to the cold. If it’s your time taking an ice bath, If it’s your first time taking an ice bath, it’s often recommended to aim for 1-3 minutes. If the plunge was manageable, you can increase your time (or decrease your temp) next time.

How much ice do you need for a cold plunge without a chiller?

The amount of ice depends on the size of the tub and the temperature you are seeking in your ice bath. For a ballpark, you’ll need about 60-100lbs of ice to get your bath to the desired temp (under 50 degrees).

What are some tips to mentally get through a plunge?

Like most things, starting is the hardest part. Upon submersion and shock, your body’s fight or flight response will kick in (telling you to get the hell out of there). This is where the true challenge lies: “Mentally getting through a plunge is actually the toughest part for me,” says Klink. “I have had to train my mind to slow down and focus on my breathing. The more you focus on your breathing, taking deep breaths, and focus on staying in the moment, the quicker the time goes. This takes some time to get to a point where you can feel relaxed in the cold water.”

When is the best time to take an ice bath?

It’s easier said than done, but try to stay consistent and commit yourself to a regular schedule. Like most habits, it will take time and repetition to develop. “My biggest piece of advice is to start with a manageable time duration and water temperature,” says Klink. “You can build on this session after session as you build a tolerance.” Even better, setting goals throughout your cold-plunge journey always makes it a personal challenge to reach/beat, adding even more of a pep in your step as your dry off.

Spring Allergies Can Lead To Dry, Itchy Skin—Here’s How Derms Want You To Deal https://www.wellandgood.com/allergies-dry-skin/ Sun, 16 Apr 2023 17:00:51 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1048477 With the dry days of winter in the rearview mirror, spring humidity often brings about more comfortable, hydrated skin. Many even experience a major uptick in oil production and pore congestion. But if you suffer from spring allergies, the change in season can catalyze dryness and itching—especially if you’re prone to eczema.

“Somebody who has really bad spring allergies can definitely feel like their skin, in general, is more sensitive,” says Marissa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. “It’s not unusual for people with spring allergies to develop red, sleepy, puffy eyes—even independent of having an underlying diagnosis of eczema.” But if you do have eczema, she notes that spring allergies can cause a flare. “Those who have eczema may be more likely to have seasonal allergies,” she adds.”Just because of the fact that they exist together, you may see a flare-up of both of these conditions in the springtime. But also, people suffering from spring allergies are often rubbing and aggravating their skin, which can flare eczema as well.”

So if the rise in pollen is leaving your skin dry, flakey, itchy, and irritated, there are things you can do to help. Get the tips below from dermatologists and allergists.

How to deal when spring allergies cause dry skin

1. Get the source of the allergy under control

No matter what you slather on your skin, the only way to really soothe dryness caused by spring allergies is to manage them. Be consistent about taking your allergy meds and visit a board-certified allergist.

“It’s good, if you suffer from allergies in general, to see a board-certified allergist and be tested,” says allergist and immunologist Purvi Parikh, MD. “Different pollens are in the air at different times of the year. Also, you might be someone who’s allergic to indoor things as well as outdoor, so in order to know when you need to be prepared, it’s a good idea to get tested. Because then you’ll know what your triggers are, and what to do about them.”

2. Keep your skin-care routine minimal and soothing

“Keep your skin routine simple and focus on a less-is-more approach,” says Dr. Garshick. “Whenever your skin is more susceptible to inflammation, it may be more reactive. So you wanna keep everything simple to make sure that you’re not going to develop sensitivity or use any ingredients that are gonna worsen the skin overall.”

Dove Beauty Bar 3 Pack — $8.00

Great for the face and body, this bar is beloved by derms as a gentle cleanser. “The bar is very gentle but also nourishing and moisturizing on the skin,” says Dr. Garshick.

Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser — $9.00

“The VaniCream Facial Cleanser is great because it eliminates many of the common allergens,” says Dr. Garshick. “So there is no preservative, no fragrance. So in general, for those who do have more sensitive skin, it’s a great gentle option that won’t cause worsening redness or flaking.”

Amazon Basic Care Maximum Strength Hydrocortisone 1 Percent Anti-Itch Cream — $4.00 to $7.00

“In many cases, if the skin does experience redness and flaking a prescription or a non-prescription cortisone cream may be necessary to soothe and calm the skin,” says Dr. Garshick. Just be sure to check in with a board-certified dermatologist first.

CeraVe Healing Ointment — $17.00

If your eyes are super irritated, you can apply a thin layer of this ointment around the eyelids. “That can be helpful to protect the skin from external irritation, which even includes rubbing,” says Dr. Garshick.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo — $26.00

This face lotion is soothing and lightweight, making it perfect for spring. Formerly known as Toleriane Ultra, “it’s a great gentle concentrated moisturizing formula,” says Dr. Garshick. “It’s lightweight in the sense that it absorbs easily, but provides a nice level of moisture and protection for the skin.”

3. Consider investing in  an air purifier

“Air purifiers are a huge help in maintaining clear and calm skin. The air inside homes can contain up to five times more pollutants than the outside air,” says Marnie Nussbaum, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist. “High-quality air purifiers can capture mold, bacteria, formaldehyde particles, and even allergens which will significantly improve the quality of your air and, therefore, your skin.”

If you want something functional and pretty, consider the Coway Airmega 250 Art ($499), a limited edition version of the Airmega 250 outfitted with artwork by graphic designer Haily Hills. It doesn’t take up much room and is pretty quiet, helping it fit into your home without sticking out like a sore thumb.

4. Sleep with your windows closed

Cool air drifting through your window might feel amazing as you fall asleep, but all it’s doing is pulling pollen into your room. That’s Dr. Parikh recommends sleeping with your windows shut during allergy season. It’s also probs best to keep them closed during the day, as any allergens that do blow in can find a comfy new home on your pillow.

“You should be spending eight hours a night in your bed,” says John McKeon, MD, CEO of Allergy Standards. “Often, the bed can be the source of the trigger factor, rather than the actual air. People think it’s the air they’re breathing, but really it could be the allergens [from their bedding] getting into the air that they’re breathing while they’re asleep.

Emma Roberts and I Both Swear By the Original White Noise Machine From the ’60s To Fall Asleep https://www.wellandgood.com/marpac-white-noise-machine-review/ Thu, 13 Apr 2023 17:00:30 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1048917 As long as I can remember, I’ve been a terrible sleeper. Even the faintest noise sends me jolting up in bed, wide awake. I’m so envious of anyone who can fall asleep on airplanes, no problem. I have to have the perfect conditions to fall asleep: blackout curtains, a silk sleep mask, perfect temperature—not too cold, not too hot. I’m a true Goldilocks when it comes to sleep—it’s got to be just right.

So when I discovered this Marpac Dohm white noise machine ($41), my life changed. Truly, out of all the products I own that I rely on the most, I would put this in the top three. I actually bought this white noise machine for my friend’s baby years ago. And when I read the Amazon reviews I realized that a ton of sleepless adults, like myself, swear by it. It has a near-perfect 5-star average review, so I bought one for myself. Now, I can’t fall asleep without it. I even bring it with me every time I stay in a hotel room on vacation.

marpac dohm white noise machine
Marpac Dohm Classic The Original White Noise Machine — $41.00

Features:

  • Power source is corded electric
  • Sound: real fan (white noise)
  • Weighs 1.6 pounds
  • Dimensions: 5.75 x 5.75 x 3.25 inches
  • 2 speed options
  • Comes with 1-year warranty

How white noise machines can help you sleep

If you’ve never used a white noise machine before, it’s essentially a device that drowns out background noise and can have a calming effect, easing you into sleep faster. I reached out to sleep expert and CEO of Ostrichpillow, Pablo Carrascal, to explain exactly how it works. “When playing white noise (meaning noise containing many frequencies with equal intensities), it can help mask other noises present in your environment—like traffic or people talking,” explains Carrascal. “Basically, a white noise machine helps your brain not to process other noises, helping your brain lose attention—which, in turn, can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.”

One recent study from the Sleep Foundation shows that 38 percent of adults (who participated in the study) fall asleep faster with white noise. It’s certainly not a “magic bullet” for all, but if it helps, then it really helps. If you’re like me and super sensitive to acute noise, you could benefit the most from a white noise machine because it drowns out everything else. Now, sound machines can get really technical and fancy and cost hundreds of dollars—but I’ve used those before and honestly, they’re complicated and sometimes don’t even work as well. The one I’m super into is only $41 and it’s no-frills and simple. I can use it when I’m half-asleep.

The Marpac Dohm Classic is the original white noise machine that dates back to the ‘60s and it’s still the most popular one. It’s proof positive that sometimes basic is best. Basically it’s a small circular machine that can fit on your bedside table, and it has a whirring fan inside. And there are two switches: one that creates a low whirring hum and one with a slightly louder hum. That’s it—nothing digital, no app downloads required.

Even if you don’t have trouble falling asleep at all, if you live in a city or an apartment with thin walls, I’d recommend it. I can often hear my neighbors below me watching TV during the day, so I’ll turn the sound machine on while I’m working and it instantly drowns it out. Emma Roberts also listed it as one of the top products she can’t live without, saying, “I originally got this for my son,” she explained. “Then I got so used to hearing it, and I was on location a couple months later and I could hear all the traffic outside. I used it, and it drowned out all the noise. Now I can’t sleep without it.” You and me both, Emma, you and me both.

*Also, note that if you see it listed as “Yogasleep” instead of Marpac, it’s the same brand—the name just changed.

Dentists Say This LED Whitening Kit Is Gentler on Gums Than Gels and Strips—So I Tried It https://www.wellandgood.com/colgate-optic-white-comfortfit-led-teeth-whitening-kit-review/ Tue, 04 Apr 2023 21:00:12 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1043471 My love for drinking black coffee makes it difficult for me to maintain a pearly white smile. While teeth-whitening kits are readily available at almost every supermarket and drugstore you can shop at, I haven’t had the best luck using them. Not because the product is ineffective, but my gums burn the second the whiting gel is applied to my teeth.

It’s a pretty common problem for folks trying to whiten their teeth at home, and it’s why products like the Colgate Optic White ComfortFit Teeth-Whitening Kit (Normally $50, now $42) have become such a popular alternative. The kit relies on LED light and “purple wavelength technology” to whiten teeth, a process that is reportedly gentler on sensitive gums.

Tired of coffee-stained chompers, I decided to give the Colgate Optic White ComfortFit Teeth-Whitening Kit a whirl. What arrived was a futuristic-looking mouthpiece, a gel-whitening pen, and handful of charging cables. My first thought was, “How, exactly, does this work?” Thankfully, there are dentists to answer that.

How does the Colgate Optic White ComfortFit Teeth Whitening Kit work?

“The LED itself does not whiten your teeth,” dentist David Chen, DDS, explains. “What it does is inject energy into the peroxide whitening gel, which causes [dark stains to] decompose.” Now, don’t be afraid of the word “decompose”—Dr. Chen assures me my teeth aren’t going to fall out of my head.

He explains that the bright light decomposes stain bonds, aka, the very-scientific, color-absorbing double bonds on your teeth that cause yellowing and discoloration. When hit with an LED light, these double bonds undergo the process of decomposition that turns them into single bonds, which reflect more light and make teeth appear whiter to the eye. “What you may find interesting is that these tooth stains don’t exactly disappear… all that happened was that the double bonds became single bonds,” Dr. Chen says. “Technically they are still there in your tooth but they just become invisible to your eyes since it is now reflecting light instead of absorbing.”

So, unlike traditional teeth whitening strips, the LED whitening essentially camouflages stains and discoloration.

My honest review of the Colgate Optic White ComfortFit Teeth-Whitening Kit

Now that we have the “how,” it’s time for the experience. According to the box, I would see increased whitening after three uses, with a dramatic difference after 10 uses.

What’s included:

The ComfortFit Teeth-Whitening Kit comes with four pieces total: A whitening pen, a lightning connector for Apple devices, an LED mouthpiece, and the case for the head of the LED mouthpiece.

What puts the “comfort” in “ComfortFit” is the LED device itself, which features a soft, silicone mouthpiece that’s pleasant to keep in your mouth during treatment. It’s moldable, so it fits the shape of your mouth perfectly. The device connects, via a long cord, to a mobile device or power bank with its adaptable head— you choose whether you need a USB-C connection or use the lighting cable attachment.

My experience:

Ahead of even opening the box, I downloaded Colgate’s free mobile app on my phone, which allows users to create a personalized whitening schedule with daily reminders. Through the app, I also gain points that I can redeem in exchange for real products. If there’s a way that I can get my next tube of toothpaste for free, I’m gonna do it.

Once the app was on my phone, I took a picture of my teeth and opened the box. Following the instructions, I clicked the pen about 12 times to get the serum flowing (I was told it can take up to 20 clicks) and dried my teeth with a piece of paper towel before applying the serum. Unlike the whitening strips and gels I’ve tried in the past that hurt my whole mouth, I only felt a little tingle near the gums on one individual tooth, which was a good sign I could proceed comfortably.

Then, I waited the recommended 15 seconds before popping the LED strip in my mouth. To activate the LED strip all I had to do was plug it into my phone and click the “on” switch, which made it super convenient and hands-free to walk around with. I had just taken my evening shower and was wearing a robe with pockets, so I just tossed my phone into my pocket with the device in my mouth and let it go to work. It beeped once after five minutes (the halfway mark) then twice after 10 minutes to alert me my treatment was complete.

At the 10 minute mark, I shuffled to the bathroom to look in the mirror, brushed away the cured serum (which you can technically leave on over night, but it feels a little filmy, so I brushed mine away with warm water), and took another photo. I was pleasantly surprised that there was a difference from the first photo I took. I even noticed that my once tingly tooth felt fine.

Before I knew it, Day 3 came, and my teeth looked whiter. Not drastically whiter, but a bit sparklier. By Days 4-7, though, it felt like my results had plateaued. The photos I were taking didn’t look at difference at the day before. It really wasn’t until Day 10 that I realized how much progress had been made. After my final treatment, I put my pre-treatment photo side-by-side with my newest result. My jaw fell open as I realized just how far my teeth had come. Were they as white as a paper towel? No. But, they were significantly whiter than I’ve seen them in ages. Absolutely. Suffice to say, I’m glad I trusted the process.

Side by side comparison of teeth whitening results on day 3 and day 10

Final thoughts

While using the Colgate Optic White ComfortFit Teeth-Whitening Kit was an overall positive experience, there are a few drawbacks I noted. For one, after Day 5 I noticed a bit of a film forming between the bristles of the gel-whitening pen that made it difficult to get an even application. Fortunately, I was able to just pull them out.

The app could also use some improvement. On Day 6 I didn’t get to do my teeth-whitening treatment until 12:15 a.m., so I marked that I did it for the day. The next night, when I went to do my teeth whitening at my normal time of 10 p.m. like I had scheduled (technically on the same day), I couldn’t check it off in the app without risking not gaining points. Turns out, you cannot have completed two sessions in the same calendar day. I wish I could change that to a 12-hour limit so that if I have a late night again, I don’t lose out on points.

All in all, I think this treatment did what it said it would do and effectively whitened my coffee-stained teeth. If you want to embark on this teeth-whitening journey with the Colgate Optic White ComfortFit Teeth-Whitening Kit, make sure to heed dentist Chen’s words of wisdom: “I would complete the full whitening treatment which may be a week or two depending on your product,” he notes. If you ever want a touch-up, Chen recommends doing so every six months, but of course consult with your dentist for the best game plan for your teeth-whitening journey.

I recently had the chance to take one of Vitamix’s newest blenders, the Propel Series 510, for a ride (or spin, rather) to see if it’s worth the hype—and saying I was impressed would be a sheer understatement. These machines are a force to be reckoned with, from the design to the functionality to the mechanics. Naturally, I needed to learn more (everything!) about what makes the new high-performance blender so powerful (and practical)—which is why I caught up with Vitamix’s product director, who gave me the inside scoop on one of their most impressive models to hit the market yet.

More ahead on why this is my favorite Vitamix to date and how my smooth test drive with the Lamborghini of blenders really went.

The new Vitamix Propel Series 510 blender is the *chef’s kiss* combination of power and practicality

When it comes to blenders, power and practicality are my main selling points—which were the reasons why I was instantly drawn to the new Propel Series 510 blender. Along with its manual speed controls, the Series 510 features three preset blending programs for making smoothies, frozen desserts, or hot soups with the press of a button (practicality: check).

“Preset programs are the most convenient feature available on a blender. With our programs, you can set up your blend, turn on the program, walk away, and come back to the same consistent blend time and time again,” Jud Cummins, the director of category and product at Vitamix, says. For even more hands-off cooking ability, their Propel Series 750 blender has an additional two settings dips and spreads and self-cleaning); it also comes with a 64-ounce container, compared to the 510’s 48-ounce one.

What’s more, Vitamix has some of the best technology (and power) when it comes to its blending systems. “At Vitamix, power, quality, and durability are behind every engineering decision that goes into making our beloved machines. The Propel Series is no different. What makes our blenders so special is their entire system: their motor base, container, blades, and so on—they all were designed with performance in mind,” Cummins says. IYKYK: Two horsepower is certainly enough to transform rock-solid frozen fruit into silky smoothies or fibrous greens into creamy soups with ease. (Power: check.)

Here’s what happened when I took this blender for a spin

According to Cummins, there are three essential tips to maximize the efficiency and power of a Vitamix. First, he recommends always using the tamper, which helps blend tough ingredients like frozen fruits and nut butter. Secondly, he recommends layering your blend of ingredients in what he calls the “Vitamix way,” which means liquids on the bottom, and stacking heavier components on top of the lighter ones to achieve the “classic Vitamix vortex.” (Ahem, like the ones you see on recipe videos on social media.)

Lastly, don’t forget to blend on high unless a recipe calls for a lower speed. “When you ramp up the machine to its highest speed, you’ll get the most optimal results,” Cummins says.

Keeping his tips in mind, I made my favorite go-to smoothie: one cup of frozen strawberries and blueberries, one cup of Elmhurst sweetened cashew milk, and a half cup of probiotic Lifeway whole milk coconut kefir. That said, I admittedly forgot to layer the ingredients the Vitamix way—meaning that I started with the frozen fruit at the bottom instead of the top. Sigh. Although I feared I had ruined my test from the get-go, the tamper really saved the day.

Using the opening on the top of the lid (meant to fit the tamper perfectly and prevent it from reaching the blades) and the super-convenient, high-power smoothie-making preset, I began pushing the fruit and liquids together as the blender revved its engine. Much to my relief, after a few tries, the Vitamix vortex got going smoothly, and the ingredients began to swirl together as if they were trapped in the center of a tornado.

During a quick 60-second span, the blended-up fruit and liquids became a perfectly homogenous, vibrantly-hued, and luxuriously creamy purple smoothie. Needless to say, it was as blissful to watch as it was to slurp up. Most impressively, there was zero grit or icky berry seed particle to get stuck in my throat. Enough said the smoothie was as smooth as I’d imagine driving a Lamborghini would be (and actually worth the price).

An easy gut-healthy golden milk smoothie recipe:

Why Your Coffee Maker Should Be in the Bedroom https://www.wellandgood.com/coffee-maker-bedroom/ Sat, 18 Mar 2023 15:00:53 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1034617 I struggle with insomnia. It’s not a constant condition, but it is one triggered by times of stress and uncertainty when my brain starts to race with no solutions in sight. Most ironically, perhaps, the first flare-up I’ve had in months fell this week during Sleep Awareness Week, a campaign hosted by the National Sleep Foundation after the Daylight Savings Time begins, reminding Americans about the importance of rest and sleep for our physical health and emotional well-being (and also prompting sleep brands to host some pretty sweet sales). I’m aware of my lack of sleep for sure—and miserable as soon as morning hits.

But a few years ago, I stumbled across a tweet that changed my trajectory entirely. It said that putting a coffee maker by your bedside made you feel like you were in a boutique hotel in coastal Italy. If you feel like you’re in a fancy hotel, you’re usually more excited to get up in the morning, right? The logic works. It really does, I swear. Desperate for any solution that made me into a morning person again, I tried it, placing my single-serve coffee machine on my nightstand—and I never looked back.

Having my coffee in bed (and uh, using the machine as a snooze button) salvages the joy in my 6 a.m. wake-ups and makes me look forward to my morning, even when I’m suffering from too-few hours of rest. My personal definition of luxury is elevating a daily ritual, something I would do every day anyway, and splurging on a kitchen appliance I reach for again and again has made a significant improvement in my daily happiness and equilibrium. Whether you’re a night owl or just *love* the idea of this five-star hotel feeling everyday, here are five machines I recommend that’ll actually make you look forward to the screech of your alarm (what makes them different is that they’re sleep enough to fit on your nightstand).

5 coffee machines that’ll actually make you a morning person

lavazza
Lavazza Classy Mini Single Serve Espresso Machine — $175.00

Originally $185, now $175

The café I frequented in college used Lavazza coffee, making me instantly affectionate towards the taste. When the pandemic shut it down, I recall buying a huge bag of espresso from the shop in an attempt to keep it in business—and now I’m hooked. So where better to buy a mini espresso machine than the coffee company responsible for my initial love? Nostalgia aside, this Single Cup Classic Mini Espresso Machine is intuitive and easy to use.

It’s a single-serve espresso maker that can hold up to five capsules. You’ve got the option of a single or double espresso—it’s pretty no-frills, so if you love something more frothy, we’d suggest something like the Nespresso VertuoPlus (keep scrolling). But for a shot or double shot that tastes like you walked to the coffee shop, this will do the trick (high-quality taste is thanks to the high-pressure system).

nespresso
Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe — $196.00

Personally, I’m a Nespresso girlie. This coffee maker is my original nightstand machine. I love that I can alternate between espresso and coffee, experiment with different flavors, auto-order for convenience, and (of course) recycle the pods when finished. I find Nespresso coffee to have an irresistible crema and flavor, making barista-quality brews at home—and it even fits in my carry-on when I move. (Yes, taking my coffee maker with me when I travel is totally my red flag, but what can I say? I’m a gal with needs.)

bruvi
The Bruvi Bundle — $348.00

Originally $398, now $348

Feeling splurge-y? I don’t blame you. If you drink a cuppa every day (or, um, a couple), you might want to invest in a coffee machine that has enough variety to keep you happy. If you can’t get no satisfaction from a single-use machine, opt for an appliance like the 25-percent-off Bruvi, which makes coffee, true high pressure espresso, Americanos, cold brew, iced coffee, infused coffee and even matcha lattes.

Better yet, the Bruvi has mobile app connectivity for remote brewing and scheduling. It even tracks your consumption (although ignorance is sometimes bliss.) With a focus on sustainability, the pods you use in the Bruvi machine break down organically over only a few years without leaving microplastics behind, making them the most eco-friendly of any pod-based coffee machine I’ve found on the market.

famiworths
Famisworths Single Serve Coffee Machine — $60.00

Originally $73, now $60

If you’d like to keep your kitchen machine where it is, or have a caffeine-hungry household that needs access to a communal coffee maker, you might want to have a for-you-only machine that simply gets the job done without blowing the budget. Caffeine in system right away: check. In that case, opt for this Famiworths machine, ranked No. 1 for Coffee Percolators on Amazon, which is compatible with both pods and ground coffee. This one-cup machine, complete with a self-cleaning function, is narrow enough to live on a packed bedside table without friction, brews from 6 to 14 ounces, and is even compatible with a travel mug for those instantly on the go.

haden
Haden Dorchester Ultra Stone Blue Programmable Drip Coffee Maker — $100.00

Originally $130, now $100

You might be a drip coffee person rather than espresso, or sleep beside a partner who wants in on the luxurious practice. If so, opt for this gorgeous stone blue 10-cup coffee maker. It’s slim and attractive enough to enhance your nightstand aesthetic rather than clutter it up! A delay brew feature ensures that you can use this coffee machine *literally as your alarm* and wake up to the delightful aroma of java, and it stays warm for up to two hours. Simply prep at night and enjoy a steaming mug in the morning. Warning: with multiple cups within arms’ reach, you may not want to get out of bed right away (but you’ll definitely be awake again).

Headphones Need Some TLC? Here’s How To Replace the Pads So You Don’t Need To Buy a New Pair https://www.wellandgood.com/how-to-replace-headphone-pads/ Sat, 11 Feb 2023 20:00:16 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1014671 From music to podcasts, audiobooks, and even phone calls – many of us rely heavily on our headphones throughout the day. All that use means that wear and tear is inevitable, with generally the ear pads being the first to go.

Whether it’s from workout sweat or overuse, it is not uncommon to get to the point where your headphone pads need replaced, which is a much cheaper option than buying a new pair in most cases.

How to replace your headphone pads

Popular TikTok user, StudyMoofin recently shared a viral video in which she replaces the earpads of her Beats Studio3 over-ear headphones. In the ASMR clip with nearly 14 million views, she removes the original pads with a butter knife cleans her headphones, then sticks down the new pads.

StudyMoofin purchased her pads from Amazon for under $27 with the replacement process taking just a few minutes. The content creator revealed in the comments section that she had had them for three years before the update. For StudyMoofin, she said her wear and tear came about from frequently sanitizing the pads and not drying them off—leading to cracking and damage.

Commentors seem to share her sentiments about sustainability: “Yeeesss!! Normalize REPAIRING items because we just toss them and buy a new one!!!” wrote one.

And pad replacements aren’t just possible on Beats headphones, either. While the StudyMuffin got her pads from an unknown brand off of Amazon, brands like Bose and Apple sell official replacements on their sites, ranging in price from $24 to $69 depending on the brand and style. Considering the fact that a new pair of from brands like this cost upwards of a couple hundred dollars or more, learning that it’s possible to replace the pads for a fraction of the cost should be music to your ears.

The Best Budget-Friendly Standing Desks That Help Support Your Posture and Prevent Backache https://www.wellandgood.com/best-budget-friendly-standing-desks/ Sun, 29 Jan 2023 15:00:44 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1004933 If you’re here looking for a budget-friendly standing desk for your WFH station, you’re certainly not the only one who wants to upgrade their space (and save their back). Work from home (WFH) has literally transformed work-life balance for millions of Americans (27.6 million people and counting) for the better. In lieu of hour-long commutes, unnecessarily lengthy in-person meetings, and ongoing office banter that sometimes warrants a paper “do not disturb” sign taped to your back, WFH has allowed people to improve productivity, reduce unnecessary spending, and focus on their mental health.

But with remote work, experts have seen a surge in back and neck pain as a result of sedentary behaviors like couch work. Luckily, ergonomic furniture like standing desks exist—and it’s here to support your posture. As you likely already know, though, standing desks aren’t cheap, retailing between $200 and $7,800.

The good news is that we found great budget-friendly standing desk options that advance posture but won’t break the bank. Keep on scrolling on the best standing desks (all under $500) and what to look for in a standing desk before you buy one.

Best budget-friendly standing desks, at a glance:

What to look for in a budget-friendly standing desk

There are three main types of standing desks: electric, converters, and manual height adjustable desks. Electric standing ones utilize motors that raise, stop, and lower the desks to your desired height and usually come with a built-in control pad. For people who already own a desk but want the functionality of a standing desk, converters—a platform that transforms your existing desk into a standing desk—are a solid choice. Last but not least, there are manual height adjustable desks. As the name implies, this type of desk requires manual adjustment (using a lever or some other system), and it’s typically equipped on portable or more space-friendly desks. Since manual height adjustable desks require no electrical work, they tend to run on the cheaper end of standing desks.

The type of desk you choose will depend on your lifestyle needs. For an easy and ready-to-use experience, go with electric. Have a desk? Opt for a converter. Want a no-frills desk and portability? We’d recommend a manual adjustment desk. Beyond types of desks, you’ll also want to consider the shape and size. For shape, most standing desks are rectangular, but there are ergonomic desks that have a slight curvature that better fit your chair. Desk sizes change but for electric desks, they can measure up to 60 by 30 inches.

If you mean business, check out these best budget-friendly standing desks that will advance posture, minimize hunching, and keep you on your toes (pun intended).

9 Best At-Home Infrared Saunas for Every Space and Budget https://www.wellandgood.com/at-home-infrared-saunas/ Tue, 24 Jan 2023 15:30:22 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=626077 Some people practice self care by taking baths, others practice it by cuddling up with a good book. For some, sweating it out in the infrared sauna at the local wellness center does the trick—or now, in their own homes. Thanks to innovations in at-home wellness-tech, infrared saunas are no longer just a fancy treatment provided at solely at spas and gyms. Now, there are at-home infrared saunas aplenty, allowing anyone who wants to sweat it out in the comfort of their own homes to do so.

Best infrared saunas at a glance

Best infrared sauna blankets, at a glance

Benefits of using an infrared sauna

While typical saunas heat the air around you, infrared saunas use infrared rays (something the eye can’t see) to penetrate into your skin and muscles, directly heating your body. According to Lauren Dal Farra, MD, cardiologist and CEO of Palm Health, that process can result in some health perks.

“During an infrared sauna session, infrared light penetrates the skin, and the core body temperature increases. The body has to work hard to cool itself and maintain thermal regulation,” says Dr. Dal Farra. “As a result, the body induces sweating, vasodilates arteries, and increases the heart rate and volume of blood pumped by the heart each minute. The effect is similar to that achieved by walking at a moderate pace.” Additionally, several studies demonstrate that repeated infrared thermal therapy improves vascular endothelial function. “Regular use of an infrared sauna may provide many of the same cardiovascular conditioning benefits as exercise,” she says.

Self-reported benefits include, “increased relaxation, improved skin clarity and elasticity, decreased pain, and increased well-being from using the infrared sauna,” says Dr. Dal Farra. Neurologist Sita Kedia, MD, the chief medical officer at Palm Health, says at-home infrared saunas may also help you sleep better at night.

“People report that regular infrared sauna sessions help improve the quality and onset of sleep. Improved sleep may be attributed to multiple factors, including increased muscle relaxation, pain reduction, decreases in cortisol, and the cardiovascular benefits of increased blood flow and circulation,” says Dr. Kedia. “We also know that routine cardiovascular exercise improves quantity and quality of sleep. Saunas simulate the changes seen with cardiovascular exercise, which may be one of the primary drivers for saunas to improve sleep in individuals.”

Infrared saunas vs. sauna blankets

Chances are, the word “sauna” conjures up images of a small, warm room with areas for people to sit or lie down on while they unwind. Traditional infrared saunas look like this and are designed to provide users with a designated space to relax in. But given how expensive these separate rooms can cost, brands have created alternatives that work just as well, without the hefty price tag. These options include portable infrared saunas that pop-up like a tent, smaller, dome-like structures users can lie down in, and infrared masks or belts that provide concentrated relief in the form of a wearable.

The most popular alternative is a sauna blanket, which is just a sauna disguised as a sleeping bag. Designed to be laid in, they’re typically less expensive than traditional, walled-in infrared saunas and are much lighter and more portable, allowing users to relax anywhere they can find an electrical outlet.

How much does an at-home infrared sauna cost?

The price ultimately depends on model and type. Larger, permanent walk-in saunas range anywhere from the $2,500-$10,000 price range, although these are definitely at the most luxurious end of the spectrum. Portable options—which include infrared sauna blankets—can cost anywhere from $150-$700, depending on the style and model.

How to use an infrared sauna

In order to reap the potential benefits of infrared saunas, all you need to do is dedicate a tiny fraction of your day. “We observe that benefits begin at sessions of at least 15 minutes in length. Depending on your health condition, we recommend starting at 15 minutes and working up to 45-minute sessions,” says Dr. Dal Farra. “If you’re using the infrared sauna for cardiovascular and metabolic benefits, I recommend around four sessions per week, or 12 to 15 sessions over three weeks. The temperature of the infrared sauna is typically between 110°F to 130°F.”

Doctors Say These Warm-Mist Humidifiers Can Keep You Healthier During Cold and Flu Season https://www.wellandgood.com/best-warm-mist-humidfiers/ Sun, 22 Jan 2023 15:00:15 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1007651 Humidifiers are that one small home appliance we tend to forget about until we really need it. This is especially true in the winter when the humidity drops and the climate feels dry and uncomfortable, or when the inevitable cold and flu season wreaks havoc on our bodies. Whether out of precaution or necessity, if you’re looking for a humidifier, you’ll definitely want to consider one with warm mist for these concerns.

“Warm-mist humidifiers are considered better for the skin [compared to cool mist humidifiers] because they promote higher moisture levels within a space,” Sony Sherpa, MD, a holistic physician at Nature’s Rise. This can be particularly useful in dry climates, whether that be year round (we’re looking at you, Los Angeles) or seasonal. Additionally, warm mist humidifiers are also superior in cold and flu season, since, “they help kill bacteria and viruses in the air, which may help reduce the risk of bacterial and viral infections.” This makes them the ultimate defense against congestion and the seemingly never-ending cycle of sickness during the winter months.

Keep reading for more benefits, plus the best warm-mist humidifiers your money can buy.

The best warm-mist humidifiers, at a glance:

The benefits of warm mist humidifiers

Humidifiers might be the hero in a cold and flu season story, but remedying the latest bug isn’t the only reason to add one to your arsenal. From keeping you well to hydrating your hair and skin, to even keeping your houseplants happy (yes, really), there are several reasons to invest in a high-quality humidifier.

Relieve congestion:

One of the most common reasons to use a humidifier is to help relieve congestion when you feel under the weather. “If you suffer from congestion or sinus problems, humidifiers can help to thin mucus and make it easier to breath,” says Dr. Sherpa. “The added moisture in the air also helps to lubricate your nasal passages and reduce irritation.”

Create a comfortable home environment:

Humidifiers also do a fantastic job of creating a more comfortable environment, whether you use one at home or at the office. According to Dr. Sherpa, a humidifier reduces the amount of dust in the air, which can ultimately address allergy concerns. “Dust mites are small creatures that thrive in dry conditions and can cause allergies and respiratory problems,” she explains. With regular use of a humidifier, you can target the dust and breath a bit easier.

Moisturize skin, hair, and nails:

Another key benefit of humidifiers is their ability to ward off dry skin and lips. “Humidifiers can help retain your skin’s natural barrier, keep your skin hydrated, and help prepare the skin to receive at-home topical treatments,” says board-certified dermatologist, Ryan Turner. According to Dr. Turner, warm-mist humidifiers are also preferred over cool-mist humidifiers because they can open the pores, which helps sebum and debris escape on acne-prone skin. “This can be useful prior to cleansing or the application of topical treatments,” he explains.

Prevent static electricity:

Static electricity might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about humidifiers, but the ability to prevent static electricity is a major benefit. “Static electricity is often more prevalent in dry conditions, so adding moisture to the air with a humidifier can help reduce static electricity in your home,” says Dr. Sherpa. As a result, humidifiers can help prevent shocks from electrical appliances and ensure a safer home environment.

Make your houseplants happy:

For all the plant parents out there who are struggling to keep their tropical foliage alive in dry climates, a humidifier is a must-have. Since humidifiers add humidity to the room (hence the name), they can help create a more pleasant environment for a variety of plants, including fiddle leaf fig trees, pothos plants, ferns, and monstera plants.

LG’s Self-Emptying Vacuum Is a Dream if You Have Allergies—And It’s 20% Off Right Now https://www.wellandgood.com/lg-cordzero-cordless-vacuum-review/ Sat, 21 Jan 2023 14:00:01 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=983443 There are a lot of perks to living in a pre-war building in New York City. For starters, closets are plentiful, it has hardwood floors throughout the unit, and it’s more spacious than most new builds (roughly 1,200 square feet for a two bedroom apartment, to be exact.) But with a bigger space comes more responsibility, like frequently dusting and sweeping debris off the floors. As someone who has allergies and sneezes any time dust is present, cleaning is an arduous, but very necessary task. When the broom and dust-pan were no longer cutting it, I turned to LG’s CordZero Cordless Vacuum ($800), a worthy investment for my  managing my allergies that’s currently 20 percent off on Amazon right now.

The LG CordZero cordless vacuum: An overview

Touted as a pioneer in home electronics, LG is at the forefront of innovation. From smart televisions and electronics, to laundry and kitchen appliances, LG is known for making high-tech home goodies designed to simplify its consumer’s lifestyles.

The CordZero Cordless Vacuum (which normally retails for $1,000) is the latest vacuum in LG’s CordZero line. What makes this vacuum stand out from the brand’s CordZero A9 Vacuum Stick ($550) and CordZero Robot Vacuum ($1,200) is its charging and self-emptying tower, a five-step HEPA filtration system, and a debris compressor.

Using a turbo motor, the CordZero sucks up dirt, pet dander, and hair in seconds and traps the debris in a clear, vacuum-sealed dustbin attached to the vacuum stick. The dustbin comes with a built-in compressor to compact the particles, creating more bin space and allowing users to clean for longer amounts of time.

What comes with the vacuum?

  • All-in-one tower that charges and holds the vacuum
  • 2-in-1 combination tool
  • Power mini nozzle
  • Crevice tool
  • Power mop nozzle
  • Power mop microfiber pads
  • Power carpet nozzle
  • Two lithium-ion batteries

My review

LG cordzero cordless vacuum
Photo: Kayla Hui

I tested the vacuum for a month over a variety of surfaces, including the hardwood floors in my bedroom and living room and the tile in my bathroom and kitchen. It’s left the floors spotless in every room, so much so that I didn’t need to use a broom afterwards.

What’s neat about the vacuum is that it does triple-duty as a handheld vacuum, floor vacuum, and mop. All that’s needed? A nozzle exchange. To covert the vacuum into a mop, I simply swap the universal nozzle for the Power Mop and attach the mop’s microfiber pads, which are washable and easy to remove. To turn the vacuum into a handheld, I use the mini nozzle, which is ideal for vacuuming the couch and tiny crevices.

In terms of ease of use and battery life, I give the vacuum a thumbs up. Not only does the vacuum operate with a push of a bottom, it features a tiny screen that displays battery life and the charging mode. I’ve vacuumed all three rooms on a single charge, and whenever I needed more juice—which I rarely used thanks to the long-lasting battery life—I swapped the dead battery for the second one, which charges when docked to the all-in-one tower.

What makes LG’s CordZero vacuum extra unique is that it automatically empties itself (yes, you read that correctly.) Once the vacuum is docked to the all-in-one tower, it automatically empties into a vacuum-sealed bag, so I never have to empty it myself.  The most I have to do is throw away the sealed bag (which makes it ideal for people with allergies.) The vacuum comes with three disposable bags to kick start your allergen-free home. The vacuum bag lasts several sessions worth, between 3-5, depending on how much debris is collected.  Built into the vacuum is a 5-step HEPA filtration system, which filters and traps 99.9 percent of dust and dirt. This helps to keep your home in tip-top shape and better the air quality. Not to mention, the all-in-one tower has a 3-step HEPA system, too.

What I like about the LG CordZero vacuum

There is a myriad of features that I admire about LG’s CordZero vacuum. First off, I love how lightweight it feels, making vacuuming around the nooks and crannies of my home a breeze. I also love that it comes with a tower that does triple-duty as a vacuum stand, storage unit, and charger for the vacuum and spare battery. Also neat: the convertible feature of a handheld vacuum and mop. We love a three-in-one device.

Yes, I might be a commerce writer full-time, but as an interior decorator at heart, I dig the vacuum’s sleek-looking design. It’s not distracting, and honestly, blends in like a work of art. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the auto-empty feature, which has been a godsend for my allergies. When I do need to empty and replace the bag, it’s easy to do so and doesn’t result in a mess. Compared to other vacuums I’ve used, I noticed fewer instances of sneezing, coughing, and itchy eyes. What also helped, the LG vacuum didn’t leak dust, which happened occasionally with other vacuums on the market.

What I didn’t like

One caveat to the vacuum is that it doesn’t stand up on its own. While not impossible to prop on the wall, it took me a few tries to get it to stand up. Living in a large apartment building means that I have tons of neighbors—both below and across the hall. Since the self-emptying feature is noisy, I only gravitate toward using it in the morning and afternoon to avoid disrupting others. If I were to invent the 2.0 version of this vacuum and tower, I’d want the self-emptying feature to be on the quieter side.

Final thoughts

Whether you live in a house or apartment, LG’s CordZero Cordless Vacuum is perfect for anyone who wants a cleaner and fresher smelling home. The self-emptying feature is a bonus and comes in handy whenever my allergies start acting up. It’s perfect for people who want to keep sneezing and coughing at bay. After using the vacuum for nearly a month, I’ve noticed that I sneeze and cough less often. Plus, when I walk barefoot on the floor, I no longer have dust and dirt stuck to my soles.

Normally retailing for $1,000, the vacuum does cost a pretty penny, but with a charging station that doubles as a holder and storage unit, a mop and handheld function, suction power, and a self-emptying feature, it makes the vacuum worth it. Score yours for 20 percent off the sticker price on Amazon.

These 10 Portable Humidifiers From Amazon Can Breathe Moisture Back Into Any Dry Space https://www.wellandgood.com/best-portable-humidifiers/ Wed, 18 Jan 2023 22:00:45 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1003819 Growing up, a humidifier was a clunky machine your mom pulled out when you had a stuffy nose or sore throat. It lived under the sink or boxed away in the linen closet, an over-complicated tangle of filters and buttons and wires our parents would break out on on feverish nights.

Thankfully, humidifiers have since gotten a makeover, and are now so streamlined and simple to use that you can (and should) keep them out regularly to breathe a little moisture back into your space. There are even portable humidifiers that provide some extra moisture wherever you need it—your car, the office, a hotel room—without relying on an outlet. Just charge ’em up before you go out, and breathe easier wherever you roam. Our childhood humidifiers could never…

What types of portable humidifiers are there?

Portable or not, it helps to know the different types of humidifiers out there. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are four types of humidifiers: evaporative, impeller, ultrasonic, and steam vaporizer. Evaporative humidifiers speed up the evaporation process of the water in the tank via a belt, wick, or filter. Impeller humidifiers, aka “cool mist,” use a high-speed rotating disc. Ultrasonic humidifiers use ultrasonic sound vibrations to create mist, and steam vaporizer humidifiers heat the water in the tank then cool the water just before it exists through the nozzle.

What’s the best type of humidifier?

Walgreens’ Senior Director of Product Development and Brand Management, Andrea Collaro, tells Well+Good that she recommends an ultrasonic humidifier. Why? “I think it’s the most precise, efficient, and safest way to release water vapor into the air.” Collaro says. “It uses nebulizer technology breaking water down to its smallest molecule size which allows for the most efficient room humidification, and you do not have to replace a filter which makes it very convenient.”

As for output, Collaro notes that aiming for about a 40 percent output is ideal when shopping for a humidifier. She warns, “going above 50 percent humidity level can result in condensation on the walls, floors, and other surfaces.”

Now that you’re well-versed in all things humidifier-related, scroll to be united with your new portable humidification station.

Humidifier FAQs

Do portable humidifiers really work?

Yes, portable humidifiers really work. But, you shouldn’t ask a tiny humidifier to fill a ballroom-like space. They’re most useful in cars, at desks, in a home office, or a bedroom—think small spaces.

What are the negatives of a humidifier?

Nurse practitioner Kris Adair, FNP-BC, tells Well+Good that most of the negatives of a humidifier comes from improper maintenance of the device. “There is a risk of bacterial growth, mold, and other organisms on humidifier devices especially as the ideal temperature setting for humidifiers creates a perfect environment for the growth of these organisms,” she states.

While regular cleaning is recommended for everyone, Adair also details that people with an underlying condition, like asthma or allergies, should definitely keep on top of cleaning their humidifier for the cleanest water flow every use.

Can you use tap water in a humidifier?

Dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, says that the type of water you use is dependent on the model of humidifier you’re working with. “If the filter is catching the potential allergens and unsafe particles, then tap water is fine,”Dr. Engleman says. Check the instructions—the best water to use is really whatever the individual product notes on the label.

Similar to the Professional 5™ Plus Series, the Artisan Series 5 can pretty much work its way through anything. It has the same 10 mixing speeds and the five-quart bowl-lift, which is great for both large and small batches. But where it differs is in the flexible head. Unlike the Professional, the Artisan has a tilt-head design that moves up and down so that you can easily toss in ingredients at the drop of the hat. This also allows you to swiftly change out attachments when you need to do some heavy duty stirring.

It’s one of the brand’s most powerful devices, equipped with blades that are designed to crush a half tray of ice in 10 seconds. But that’s not all. The blender also adjusts its speed automatically based on the consistency of ingredients inside, making it easier for you to gauge when your mixture is done.

Colors: 5

5-Cup Food Chopper — $55.00

Originally $70, now $55

While chopping can be the most tedious and time consuming task of meal prep, this 5-Cup Food Chopper can make this process a whole lot faster. The sharp stainless blade easily cuts and minces fruits and veggies in a matter of seconds. You then can adjust the two different speeds to help you get a smooth puree or a fine chop. Plus, there’s also a drizzle basin that allows you to quickly funnel sauces and dressings into the ingredients for added seasoning.

Colors: 7

Cordless Variable Speed Hand Blender — $80.00

Originally $100, now $80

Its eight-inch arm is tough enough to blend 25 bowls of soup on just a single charge. The mixer is also cordless (no more looking around for a free outlet!) and runs on a rechargeable lithium ion battery, which helps you to have total freedom of movement as you prepare your smoothie, milkshake, or favorite soup.

Colors: 7

6-Quart Slow Cooker with Solid Glass Lid — $100.00

Vacuums

dyson v8
V8 Absolute Vacuum — $350.00

Originally $500, now $350

If you’re still pushing around a way-too-heavy corded vacuum, always searching for the next nearest outlet, it’s time for an upgrade. Dyson’s cordless V8 design is equally as lightweight as it is mighty, so you can use it to deep clean both floors and high-up spots, like above kitchen cabinets and ceiling corners. (You’re not the only one with spiderwebs up there.) Its hair de-tangling technology is particularly helpful for those with long locks or four-legged friends, as it magically automatically clears wrapped hair from the brush bar.

Pros

  • Incredibly powerful
  • Lightweight
  • Low profile

Cons

  • You have to wall mount the charger
  • No on/off switch—you must hold down the button while vacuuming
dyson ball upright vacuum
Ball Multi Floor Origin High Performance HEPA Filter Upright Vacuum — $300.00

Originally $450, now $300

Not only does this Dyson vacuum suck up off the dirt, dust, and other unfortunate things living on your floors and in your furniture, but thanks to its HEPA filter, it expels cleaner air while doing so. In go allergens and bacteria, out goes fresher air. Win/win. Best of all, it’s currently 37 percent off. So, win/win/win.

Pros

  • Ball technology makes for easy mobility
  • Comes with washable HEPA filter
  • Strong suction

Cons

  • Corded
  • Heavier (16 pounds) than cordless options
Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute vacuum
Cyclone V10 Animal Cordless Stick Vacuum — $400.00

Originally $550, now $400

This Dyson vacuum—which is currently $150 off!—doesn’t have “animal” in its title for no reason. This powerful cordless vacuum is ideal for home with pets, both because it sucks up pet hair on all floor types and because it’s not nearly as loud and scary as other vacuums are to skittish furry friends. Choose from one of three cleaning modes to gently clean hardwood floors or go to town on your pup’s hair-matted bed. Since it’s cordless, you don’t have to worry about tripping over a cord, and its 60 minutes of runtime allows you to deep clean your whole home on one charge.

Pros

  • Easy to maneuver
  • Different attachments make it versatile
  • Particularly skillful at picking up pet hair

Cons

  • You need an outlet near where you want to wall mount the charger
dyson detect vacuum
V12 Detect Slim — $500.00

Originally $650, now $500

We recently reviewed the new-ish Dyson Detect V12 Slim, which we noted was a dream to use in small spaces (without sacrificing power), thanks to its light weight (it’s 24 percent lighter than the V15 Detect) and seamless functionality. And with features like the Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head, it literally lights up the surface ahead of you so you can see if you missed any dirt.

Pros

  • Lightweight and easy to store
  • Great suction and power for the size
  • Features LCD screen that shows how much dirt has been sucked up (yes, really)
  • 60 minutes of run-time before recharging

Cons

  • Doesn’t hold as much debris as larger models (like the Outsize).
  • Still pretty pricey

Hair Care

dyson air wrap
Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete Long — $600.00

The deal: $125 worth of free gifts

We know, we know: $600 is a tough price to swallow for a hair product. The Dyson Airwrap is so much more, though. It’s an all-in-one tool that dries and styles simultaneously, with various brushes and barrels so you can rock a sleek and smooth look one day and a mermaid waves the next. While not on sale, per se, Dyson is currently including $125 worth of free gifts (a travel pouch, a paddle brush, and detangling comb) with the purchase of an Airwrap. This particular design is meant for hair that’s chest-length or longer, but for shorter hair keep an eye out for the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Complete to come back in stock.

Pros

  • Dries and styles simultaneously
  • Includes multiple attachments
  • Allows you various looks with one tool

Cons

  • Very pricey

Fans and Air Purifiers

dyson air purifier
Pure Cool Link Tower TP02 — $300.00

Originally $500, now $300

Floor space is prime real estate, so if you can consolidate your air purifier and fan into one super sleek, futuristic looking Pure Cool Link Tower—especially now, since this Dyson TP02 is currently $200 (!!!) off—then why not? This isn’t any ol’ air purifier though. Its ultra smart design connects to the MyDyson app, so you can monitor the air quality both inside and out, as well as set a schedule and remotely control it. Pollen and pet dander, be gone!

Pros

  • Both purifies and cools
  • Can monitor air quality and control the tower via the MyDyson app
  • The nighttime mode purifies with quiet settings

Cons

  • Not small or subtle
dyson formaldehyde
Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 Purifying Fan — $500.00

Originally $690, now $500

If you don’t mess around with your home’s air quality, now is the time to invest in Dyson’s most advanced filtration system: the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 Purifying Fan. First its ultra accurate formaldehyde sensor detects the presence of the gas, then its catalytic filter (which never needs replacing) continuously destroys it, breaking it down into water and carbon dioxide. If an air purifier could be badass, this one is it. Come summertime, use it as a fan, since it projects over 77 gallons of air a second to cool you down even on the most sweltering days.

Pros

  • Detects and destroys formaldehyde
  • Can be controlled remotely through the MyDyson app
  • Oscillates up to 350 degrees to purify and cool an entire room

Cons

  • It offers a really specific solution (destroying formaldehyde and other gasses), so unless you have a need for this, you probably don’t have to purchase *this* air purifier.

Maybe the Best Gift of All Is Sleep for Both Baby and Parents: The Best Snoo Sale of the Season (40% Off!) Is Here https://www.wellandgood.com/best-snoo-sales/ Sun, 20 Nov 2022 17:16:07 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=746281 If you’ve been googling “best Snoo sales” all year long, every single day, we have good news. The Snoo is FINALLY on sale for Black Friday, and it’s the best deal you’ll get all year long. From November 20 until November 29 get a whopping 40 percent off the Snoo (and any Snoo product sitewide)—while supplies last. No code needed.

And on Giving Tuesday, which is November 29, when you purchase anything on Happiest Baby, the retailer will give a bodysuit bundle to Baby2Baby, a nonprofit that aids babies in children in need with all the necessities like diapers and clothes. So, you can feel extra good about your purchase!

Ask any expecting mother or father about the baby gifts they want most, and the Snoo is sure to be at the top of their list. Don’t let the whimsical name fool you—the high-tech, smart crib is a must-have for new parents, designed to give them peace of mind (and a break to catch up on their beauty sleep.)

The thing is, these fancy bassinets aren’t cheap. The regular price for a Snoo Smart Sleeper is $1,695—a hefty price tag, although most parents agree it’s worth every penny. Rather than shelling out some serious cash on the crib, it’s better to wait for it to go on sale, which happens to be right now. Below, the best Snoo sales to shop so you, or the new parent in your life, can finally get some sleep.

The best Snoo sales you don’t want to miss

Happiest Baby — $1,017.00

Originally $1,695, now $1,017

Happiest Baby is the brand behind the Snoo, and it rarely offers the smart crib on sale. Well, now is one of those times—you can score the Snoo Smart Baby Sleeper for $638 off the original price. It comes with free shipping and a 30-day risk-free trial (though we’re pretty sure you and Baby will both love it.)

If you happen to miss the sale, Happiest Baby offers an array of ongoing discounts for busy parents through its referral programs and military discount offerings. Or, you can rent a Snoo for just dollars a day, giving you time to check it out at your leisure.

swaddle
Happiest Baby, Sleepea® 5-Second Baby Swaddle — $26.00

Originally  $33, now $26

Designed by pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp, this soft swaddle is easy to put on Baby (raise your hand if you’ve attempted a DIY swaddle with a fussy baby), and helps them sleep, as it calms them down. Made of 100 percent organic cotton, this has arm band bands and a leg flap to keep your little one still while allowing enough flexibility for your growing baby. Plus, the material is breathable, so even if it’s warm at night, Baby shouldn’t overheat.

Amazon — $1,017.00

Originally $1,695, now $1,017

Crate & Barrel — $1,692.00

We’ll be updating the sale info as soon as we get intel.

What is a Snoo?

Not familiar with the Snoo? Or maybe you just want to learn more. Here to answer all your questions is Melissa Horger, PhD, a developmental psychologist at Temple University who researches cognitive and motor development. According to Horger, who’s studied infant sleep and sleep’s role on next day learning, explains that the Snoo is effectively a smart crib. It was developed by pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp to help soothe fussy babies and help them fall asleep on their own.

“The difference between a Snoo and a crib is that a crib contains your child, but a Snoo responds to your child,” Horger says. “Noise and motion sensors trigger the Snoo to rock or to play white noise for your infant to soothe them.”

Ask any new parent how sleep training is going and they’ll probably look at you through blood shot eyes to tell you…. not great. That’s where Snoo comes into play—rather than getting up multiple times throughout the night to rock the baby, the Snoo turns on to do that for you, aiding in sleep training while helping Mom and Dad catch up on their ‘Zzzs. That’s hours of sleep you get back, thanks to this smart invention.

“It’s a tool that can help with sleep hygiene,” Horger says. For example, instead of a caregiver having to come in and rock the baby, the Snoo can comfort them back to sleep when they wake and cry. Not only does the caregiver get a few extra minutes of sleep—which is good for everyone—but the baby is reminded that this isn’t time to interact.”

These Genius Soda Can Tab Openers Are Disability, Arthritis, and Long Nail Helpers—And an Instant *Add to Cart* https://www.wellandgood.com/soda-can-tab-openers/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 01:00:29 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=939609 If you’ve ever struggled to crack open a can, here’s a gadget you probably didn’t know existed—soda can tab openers. These ingenious little devices slip right onto the tab of your soda can to provide extra leverage and grip so you can pop it open without strain—making them a huge accessibility hack for folks with disabilities, those who experience chronic pain or arthritis in the hands, or anyone who really hates breaking a nail (probably all of us).

The handy tabs tout other super convenient uses, too, like covering the opening of your drink to keep bugs out, and making it easy to identify at a party thanks to their rainbow bright colors. Needless to say, you need these babies in your cart—you can order a six pack on Amazon for just 12 bucks.

Clearly, we feel very strongly about these soda can tab openers—but we’re not the only ones on the bandwagon, over 3,000 Amazon shoppers have given them a 5-star rating. “They work great!” writes one 5-star reviewer, “I have arthritis, and find these helpful with opening cans.” Once slid into place, the tab openers add length to most soda can tabs to bolster your grip, something that can be a real challenge for folks with a disability, or those experiencing chronic pain and soreness due to arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

And if you plan on cozying up outdoors this season (or any time of year), reviewers say you’re going to want the soda can tab openers on deck to keep pesky bugs and critters from stealing a sip—or worse, falling into your drink. Just pop open your can and spin the tab opener around to cover its opening and let bugs know that the bar is closed.

“We use this product all the time!” writes another Amazon shopper, “We live in Florida and are constantly sitting outside, especially in the evenings, to let our dogs play in the yard. [They’re] very easy to cover soda or any other beverage to keep the flies out.” One reviewer loves them so much, she’s got more to give as gifts, “I bought 2 packages and stuck one of them in a gift to my folks,” she writes in a 5-star review, “My dad loves them as much as I do! No more worrying that a fly has drowned in your cold beer, soda, or energy drink.”

What’s more, the handy openers make for an easy way to keep *tabs* on your drink at parties—saving you the trouble of trying to write on a cold can with a runny marker. “The different colors make it easy to tell which can belongs to whom at a gathering,” wrote one 5-star reviewer. So spruce up the six-pack of seltzers you’re bringing to the holiday party with a set of these soda openers, and prepare to rack up the kudos—and save everyone’s manicure. “[They] save my nails,” says one Amazon shopper in a 5-star review. She even keeps one in her car and her purse, and I must say, we respect the nail care dedication.

If You Aren’t Good at Building Spreadsheets, This Formula Generator Is Bound To Be Your New BFF https://www.wellandgood.com/excel-formula-generator/ Sun, 13 Nov 2022 18:00:19 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=970653 Both Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets are used by many every. single. day. Google Suite, which includes Sheets, sees approximately two billion visitors each month, whereas Excel has an estimated 750 million to 1.2 billion monthly visitors. Despite their popularity, however, it’s still super common (and frustrating) to not be proficient at creating spreadsheets. It’s a skill, after all. But those who aren’t are in luck because a new online generator is here to make the task exponentially easier.

It’s called Excel Formula Bot, and allows you to transform your text instructions into Excel and Sheets formulas. If you only need one-off codes now and then, the free version allows you up to five formulas per month. If you require more, there’s a monthly fee of $2.99, which also gives you access to adding the extension of the bot to Sheets, so you don’t even have to leave the site. (An Excel extension is coming soon too.)

Three dollars feels like money well spent to save hours trying to make a formula. But if you truly want to figure out if Excel Formula could benefit you, based on how much time you regularly spend toiling over spreadsheets, the site has a calculator on its homepage to help you do the math.

Enter your hourly rate and then the number of hours you spend figuring out the right formula. For example, let’s say you make $25/hour and spend four hours on formulas, your cost of time spent is $100. Best of all, it may just help ease some of those feelings of productivity paranoia you may be feeling while working from home—and that, my friends, is priceless.

The ‘iPhone of Toasters’ Made Oprah’s Favorite Things of 2022 List, and It’s 20% Off https://www.wellandgood.com/revolution-toaster-oprahs-favorite-things/ Thu, 03 Nov 2022 20:00:45 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=936295 There are only a handful of things that will make me move through life with more urgency: when the doors are about to close on the Manhattan-bound M train, when someone says “food is ready,” and Oprah (I love her). And just yesterday, she let everybody in on her Favorite Things of 2022. Usually, shopping doesn’t send people into a tizzy, but when Oprah says something is her favorite, you get your wallet ready. Among the list, the Revolution Toaster—what Oprah calls the “iPhone of toasters”—made the cut, and it’s on sale now for 20 percent off.

At first glance, it’s not hard to see why Oprah named it that. The appliance boasts an easy-to-use and fun touchscreen, with 34 modes of toasting bread (yes, 34, you heard that correctly). Using internal temperature sensors and a toasting algorithm, the Revolution sears your bread just how you like it in a matter of seconds (you can use the touch screen to visually see each level of toasty-ness), no matter if it’s a bagel, gluten-free bread, Pop-Tart, or waffle. Perfectly crispy edges on the outside and soft on the inside? No problem. Just warm-enough-to-eat-but-not-hot raisin bread? Also, no problem.

Unlike other conventional toasters, which dry out bread, this one uses proprietary technology, aka InstaGLO, to toast your bread without sucking the life out of it. Even more, it comes with a panini press for creating toasted melts, sandwiches, and quesadillas minus the need for extra appliances (think: pans, griddles, and panini makers) and a warming rack to heat up baked goods.

In addition to being Oprah’s favorite, the Revolution has amassed its own fanbase on Amazon. One shopper wrote: “The Revolution Toaster is an upgrade over my existing toaster in every way. Looks better, cooks faster and gives you more control over exactly how you want your bread/bagel/waffle etc toasted. You might think a touchscreen on a toaster is a gimmick, but it’s actually very useful. It shows pictures of how toasted your item will be, so you know what you’re getting. It takes the guesswork out of it so you don’t have to waste bread learning where your favorite setting is. It also works amazingly fast.”

While the toaster is on the pricier end of the spectrum, Amazon customers say it’s worth the price tag: “For $400, yes, this toaster is excessively priced. But you get amazing toast, and it’s a really attractive appliance that’ll make a statement in your kitchen. It should last a very long time.”

The Revolution Toaster takes the guesswork out of toasting, and you can score it on sale. Hurry, though, the sale won’t last very long.

I Can’t Stop Using the BlendJet—That Portable Blender You’ve Seen Everywhere on Instagram https://www.wellandgood.com/blendjet-portable-blender-review/ Sat, 29 Oct 2022 20:00:49 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=930409 I’ll be the first to admit I’m a sucker for marketing. I love a chic this, comes-in-the-cutest-colors that. Add a fun-turn-of phrase or some pretty advertorial? Sold. So if you, like me, have seen this portable blender literally everywhere—in between your streamed shows, on your Instagram, on TikTok… I’m here to tell you to buy it. Go, do it. Because the BlendJet isn’t that thing that you buy, use once, and then stays on top of your fridge or in the back of that cabinet never to be seen again. It’s just simply not.

So let’s start with the basics: Coming in a slew of colors, the BlendJet is super cute. Next, it whips up a smoothie (or a margarita… ahem) with ease. It charges via a USB cord and holds enough charge for about 15 or so blends. You just push the little button at the bottom and boom, you’re in business. When you’re done, just squirt some dish soap in there, add some water, and blend again to clean it, then rinse. Easy.

I keep talking about mine all the time. I make a smoothie now nearly every day, using orange juice, yogurt, and frozen fruit (plus some adaptogen powders, if I’m feeling particularly inspired). I throw a reusable, cute straw into the the body of the blender, which holds 16 fluid ounces, and that’s it. (I’m one of those people that have cute drink glasses so I’ll actually stay hydrated, and this little blender makes me want to down a frosty drink.) I’ve used mine now for months, and so far, no problems with the blade or blend quality. (Fingers crossed that doesn’t change, but I guess also—another color down the line, maybe?).

I don’t make the rules, but if I did—everyone would have to get one. It’s well worth the $60 price tag.

60 Clever Stocking Stuffers the Men in Your Life Will *Actually* Use https://www.wellandgood.com/best-stocking-stuffers-for-men/ Thu, 27 Oct 2022 23:00:01 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=927939 As if holiday shopping isn’t stressful enough—finding the perfect gift for the men in your life is its own brand of complicated (and I bet they’d say the same about us too!). It’s no secret that most guys are notoriously hard to shop for, which makes zeroing in on the “perfect” gift all the more daunting. For me, stocking stuffers are a great way to take some of the pressure off of finding that one end-all-be-all of a gift, and treat my partner to a variety of smaller, thoughtful gifts for extra holiday cheer. Even when the holidays have come and gone, surprising someone you love with small goodies like the gifts on this list is an opportunity to connect, and let them know that you’re thinking of them in more ways than one.

Whether you’re shopping for your boyfriend, dad, brother, or best guy friend, finding stocking stuffers for men is actually pretty easy. At their core, the best stocking stuffers should be useful, appeal to his interests, and be more affordable than your typical solo gift. The Highly Coveted KitchenAid Stand Mixer Has Over 3,000 5-Star Reviews—And It’s Now $120 Off for October Prime Day https://www.wellandgood.com/best-stand-mixer/ Tue, 11 Oct 2022 17:45:18 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=688981 A good stand mixer will transform your life in the kitchen. From making cake batter and cookie dough to fresh pasta and homemade butter, a stand mixer is one of the most versatile kitchen tools in your arsenal. But with so many different models on the market to choose from, it’s hard to know which one is the very best.

Luckily, reviewers are always happy to help consumers navigate the complex world of shopping. Based on over 3,000 5-star Amazon reviews, it looks like we’ve found a winner—the KitchenAid Professional 600™ Series 6 Quart Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer ($480), a “buy it once and keep it for decades” piece of equipment. And now, you can buy it for $120 off the original price during Amazon’s Early Prime Access Sale.

Unsurprisingly, KitchenAid’s stand mixer is one of the best for seasoned chefs and beginner cooks alike. The brand has been making durable mixers since 1919—over 100 years of perfecting the model to what it is today.

The Professional 600 Series model features an elevated bowl you can lift up to the beaters, making it so easy to swap out different accessories, like mixers, hooks, and more. With a 10-speed slider to control consistency and compatibility with over 10 different attachments, it’s no wonder this gorgeous kitchen gadget is the standard choice for all sorts of foodies.

Now, $480 is better than the original price, but still expansive. But according to thousands of happy Amazon reviewers, it’s worth every penny. If you’re spending so much up front, you’d want it to function properly for a long time—and that’s exactly what you should expect with your purchase. Multiple reviewers noted how they’ve been working with the KitchenAid stand mixer for years, withstanding all the wear and tear they can muster in the kitchen.

“I have a KSM90 for 30 years, and it still works strong. I bought this as a gift for my daughter,” wrote one five-star reviewer. “She bakes tons of cookies at Christmas time and would have to make several batches. With this machine she can do it all in one shot. Great product, a kitchen icon for many years.”

Currently, the empire red and onyx black colors of the mixer are the only two that on sale and in stock, so be sure to strike while the iron is hot since these are bound to sell out. And if $480 is still too expensive, don’t worry—there are some other great options. Case in point: the Cuisinart 5.5-Quart Stand Mixer ($205). It has all the bells-and-whistles needed to whip-up cookies, muffins, and more.

This ‘Toilet Wand’ Has 43,000 5-Star Ratings for Making Gunk and Mildew Disappear, and It’s On Sale for $11 https://www.wellandgood.com/clorox-toilet-wand/ Thu, 06 Oct 2022 20:00:58 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=920235 Cleaning the toilet isn’t the most fun activity in the world, but it’s necessary to prevent your bathroom from reeking and looking like a hot mess. If left untouched, mold, mildew, and bacterial growth begin to appear in your toilet bowl (gross, I know), which is unsanitary to be around, to say the least. To leave your toilet in better shape than you found it, you’ll want to invest in a trusty cleaner, and this Clorox Toilet Wand Cleaning System (on sale now for $11) has got you covered.

What differentiates this kit from regular toilet bowl cleaner is that it comes with a wand—that’s lightweight and maneuverable—to get hard-to-reach areas like the rims and jet hole. This way, you won’t have to make much contact with the toilet as you scrub away. The wand easily clicks into the disposable, sponge-like pads, which are infused with Clorox, lemon-scented cleaner and have an abrasive surface, to remove gunk, mildew, and mold from the toilet.

It’s made cleaning day so much easier for me. Once done, I push down on the blue button to eject the pads into the garbage, so I never have to physically touch them. The result? A toilet bowl that looks and smells clean. Included in the wand set are six sponge refills and a storage caddy, which conveniently holds the extra sponges and wand.

I’m not the only customer who raves about this kit—nearly 43,000 Amazon shoppers have given the kit a five-star rating. One customer said: “I’ve said goodbye to all other toilet cleaning products. All you need are these Clorox wands. You never even have to come close to touching the bowl or brush, just click in, scrub and when you’re done, you push a button to release it into the trash. It’s perfect.”

“If you’re frustrated with the lousy job your stank old bowl brush and the bottle of blue ‘gel’ bowl cleaner Clorox also makes… you gotta try this,” another reviewer wrote. “The head foams up quick and the foamed solution actually hugs the bowl and breaks down anything on the sides. This made short work of getting a bowl clean and that scent has some staying power…”

Clorox’s Toilet Wand Cleaning System makes clean-up days a breeze, and it will forever be in my cleaning supply rotation. You can score a kit, too while it’s still on sale on Amazon.

Laneige and Canopy Partnered Up To Keep Your Skin Hydrated and Make Your Moisturizers Work Better—Just in Time for Winter https://www.wellandgood.com/canopy-laneige/ Tue, 04 Oct 2022 17:45:35 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=919509 As we enter the cold, dry months of the year, we’re all thinking about keeping our skin hydrated (which is important regardless of skin type.) To help you get that moisture and hold it in tight, Canopy, a leading humidifier brand, has partnered with Laneige, a hydration-focused skin-care line. Together, they’ll bring your parched skin back to life.

“Water flows from places of higher water content to places of lower water content, which means that when the humidity in the air is balanced and high, that water can actually float into the skin,” says Elyse Love, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City who works with Canopy. A humidifier helps control the water in the air and keep both your skin and your environment at a stable hydration point, “Which means that when you’re using your moisturizer, you’re getting to hold on to all of the moisture in that moisturizer because it’s not flowing immediately into the environment,” says Dr. Love.

The Canopy x Laneige Bedtime Besties set ($40) gives you the best of both hydrating worlds, and includes a sample-size Laneige Water Sleeping Mask (which is packed with water and glycerin to provide deep hydration) and three Laneige-inspired aroma oils that turn your humidifier into a diffuser. If you don’t yet have a Canopy humidifier ($125 to $150), head over to its site during the next three months and get this Canopy x Laneige set for free with the purchase of your device.

“Between the oils, the mask, and your humidifier, you’ll have super happy skin,” says Alli Webb, president of Canopy, “Laneige is very well known as the hydration experts, as you know. So it’s just such a dream collab for us to be able to keep telling this story of hydration.”

Do your regular skin-care routine (including your moisturizer) and top it off with the Water Sleeping Mask and turn on your Canopy. Together, these products will make your moisturizer even more effective.

This collaboration takes three of Laneige’s top-sellers—the original Water Sleeping Mask ($29), the lavender Water Sleeping Mask ($25),  and the Lip Sleeping Mask in peppermint ($24)—and turns them into custom Canopy scents. The original water mask is translated into Spa Water, which has notes of rose, cucumber, and lemon.  The peppermint mask is translated into a refreshing Peppermint Twist—perfect for invigorating your senses first thing in the morning.  And the lavender water mask is translated into Lavender Dreams, which happens to be Dr. Love’s favorite. All three scents are a bit lighter and more watery than Canopy’s typical offerings, to better align with Laneige’s approach.

“Laneige believes hydrated skin is the key to healthy-looking skin, and our products are designed first and foremost to deliver intense and lasting hydration for a dewy, radiant glow,” says Jordyn Levison, senior marketing manager at Laneige. “We also know that the environment can play a major role in skin condition, which is why it was a no-brainer to partner with a brand that helps optimize the at-home environment for better skincare absorption and better sleep. Together, we came up with the perfect nighttime routine rooted in hydration and relaxation.”

Dr. Love runs her humidifier at night to enhance her beauty sleep.

“Because I’m usually in the office and out and about throughout the day, I use it just at night, because that’s a time period where I know I’m going to be in the room for long periods of time,” says Dr. Love. “It’s also a time when our skin is going through cellular repair, so it’s even more important to make sure it’s hydrated and the skin area is balanced. For people who work from home, I do tell them that it’s a great idea if you can control your environment all day, definitely recommend running all day.”

If you’re ready for a more spa-like bedtime and wake-up routine that will leave you with extra-hydrated skin, the Canopy x Laneige set is waiting for you.

The 10 Best Home Safes To Give You Peace of Mind When You’re Away https://www.wellandgood.com/best-home-safes/ Tue, 20 Sep 2022 21:02:07 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=912157 There’s no underestimating the power of peace of mind. If part of sleeping well at night is knowing that all your belongings are locked away and protected, that’s totally understandable. To help you feel a sense of safety in your own home, we researched the best home safes you can buy to help you rest easy knowing your passport, jewelry, and other cherished belongings aren’t going anywhere.

What to look for in a home safe

Home safes offer a deceptive range of features—so when you’re thinking about investing in one, it pays to sit down and think about what you actually want. For example, do you live in a climate that’s prone to fires or flooding? If so, make sure that weather-proofing is part of your safe criteria. Before you buy, here are a few key things to consider:

  • How heavy-duty do you want your safe to be? Do you want it to weigh a lot, so it’s hard to steal, or do you want it to be light so you can travel with it?
  • What kind of lock do you want to deal with? Safes come with everything from simple key locks to biometric locks that open to your eye or fingerprint.
  • How much space do I need inside my safe? If you’re only hoping to store a few things, then there’s no need to go out and buy a dog-sized safe, right?
  • Do I want the safe to attach to the wall? While some safes are designed to slip easily into drawers, others will bolt into the wall or the floor for added protection. Decide what makes sense for you and how much installation you really want to tackle.

The 4 best fire-proof safes

Firecube — $595.00

At 15.5 inches wide, this roomy and stylish safe is the perfect size for stashing your valuables and irreplaceable documents. It offers one hour of fire protection at 1700°F as well as water protection, so you can rest easy knowing that your belongings are protected no matter what life throws at you (or your home).

When the safe arrives, you’ll just need to install a few AA batteries, choose a six-digit code, and bust out a power drill to mount it if you like. “The fact that you can bolt it down is really important to me,” says senior editor Jamie Thilman. “I’ve read that the average burglary lasts less than 10 minutes, so this isn’t going anywhere now that it’s secured to the floor. Truthfully, though, I’m more concerned about losing things in a fire that I wouldn’t be able to replace.”

Firecube weighs 55 pounds and the door closes with a satisfying thud, but it’s small enough to fit easily inside a closet or pantry, atop your desk, or on a shelf. While this option has pretty spotless reviews, take note that it doesn’t offer backup key.

SentrySafe CHW20221 Fireproof Box and Waterproof Box with Key Lock 0.28 Cubic Feet — $63.00

If you’re on the market for a safe with a simple key lock, this is a great option. This baby can withstand half an hour at 1550°F and 72 hours of water submersion. At 12.8 inches wide by 8.5 inches deep by 4.4 inches high, it’s great for hiding away cash, passports, and other important documents; however, its flat shape isn’t ideal for protecting things that are more vertical in shape. So keep that in mind.

SentrySafe SFW123GDC Fireproof Waterproof Safe with Digital Keypad — $264.00

No matter what size safe you need, the alloy steel-crafted SentrySafe has your back. You can order five different sizes ranging from 9.6 inches to 19.6 inches in height. It will also protect your belongings at temperatures up to 1700°F for one hour and 24 hours of protection in water. The triple-A batteries that power this unit will last up to ten years, so you can set it and forget it for a decade. Some reviewers note that SentrySafe doesn’t offer the best customer service, so bear that in mind if it’s important for you to have in-person help as you’re setting things up.

Fireproof & Waterproof Safe with Dial Combination Lock — $160.00

Another flood and fire safe option, this SentrySafe is fireproof safe for one hour at 1700°F and waterproof 5 inches up to 24 hours. A reinforced, steel door will keep everything inside nice and secure, and the 14-inch depth offers plenty of room for storing all kinds of things—from home videos to cash to jewelry.

You’ll need a dial combination and a dual key to shut and open this, so if you’re not into two-step security, it’s better to pick another option.

The 6 best small safes for home

Amazon Basics Small Slim Desk Drawer Security Safe with Programmable Electronic Keypad — $64.00

This little but strong safe weighs in at just over 11 pounds and provides about nine inches of internal storage space. As the description notes, this safe slides easily inside of a drawer—so you can slip it beneath your socks and never think twice about it. Note that you’ll need to buy batteries separately and set the code when your unit arrives.

RPNB Deluxe Fireproof Safe with Smart Touchscreen Keypad — $400.00

This sleek-looking safe features a smart touchscreen keypad and plenty of shelves for organizing your valuables. It also comes with an advance biometric fingerprint recognition system for quick access and a five millimeter thick door for extra security. On the downside, since the safe is digital, you won’t be able to open it when the batteries run out. So make sure you’re swapping out those AA batteries as soon as they start to run low.

Stalwart Electronic Digital Steel Safe Box with LED Keypad and 2 Manual Override Keys — $60.00

On the hunt for a travel-friendly safe? This is your best bet. The Stalwart Electronic Digital Steel Safe is about 11 pounds and easy to pack on road trips. The chamber inside is only about six inches thick, so it’s ideal for those who just a have a few items to protect.

Book Safe with Combination Lock — $14.00

Slot your valuables straight into your bookshelf with this book sage that features a simple three-digit combo lock. While this option isn’t heavy duty or particular large, it’s perfect for those of us who just want an extra layer of security for our passport, social security card, and deed to the car.

Mycube Mini — $490.00

This pretty blue miniature cube weighs about 35 pounds and has an internal light for easy visibility of all its contents. It features a jewelry pad on the bottom if you have any bling that’s particularly close to your heart as well as shelves for easy organization.

iCube — $695.00

The only phone-controlled safe on the list, this unit allows you to unlock and lock it using the cellular cloud. The great thing about controlling this guy from your mobile device is that you can actually share access with other members of the family. Meaning, the whole family can secure the stuff that matters most to them (well, at least the stuff that can be placed in a safe).

Temperature can play a huge impact on the taste and strength of your warm beverage. While pour-over coffee works best with water that’s around 200°F, matcha likes water that’s 175°F.

Unless you’re going to carefully measure your water temp with a thermometer every time you want a hot drink, adjustable electric kettles are the way to go. You can pick your desired temperature, and the water won’t get any hotter than that. The kettles below are cordless, allowing you to fill them with ease, and they’ll keep the water at the exact temperature you want for several minutes after brewing.

The 7 Best Automatic Espresso Machines For Brewing Cafe-Quality Coffee at Home https://www.wellandgood.com/best-automatic-espresso-machines/ Sun, 28 Aug 2022 17:00:51 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=903323 Nearly 6 in 10 Americans are now working from home, which is more than ever before. If you’re one of them, you’re probably happy about the ways in which your new cushy office setup has improved your lifestyle and routine—except for the fact that you no longer walk or drive past your favorite coffee shop on your commute. This seemingly minor inconvenience is only exacerbated by the startling inflation prices that have caused coffee prices to soar as much as 38 percent within the last year alone. Yikes.

Both convenience and rising costs have incentivized many folks to do what has long been the unthinkable: make coffee at home using an espresso machine. Casual coffee drinkers and connoisseur alike are investing in automatic espresso machines to satiate their caffeine cravings (and, hopefully, save money in the long run.)

Whatever your reasoning for bringing this fancy gadget into your home, we’re here to help. Below is everything you need to know before you buy an automatic espresso machine, plus the best ones to buy.

Manual vs. automatic espresso machines

First things first—the espresso. This piece of equipment is different from a regular coffee maker as it produces espresso, which is thicker in consistency than regular coffee and boosted with a higher concentration of caffeine, explains Martha Vazquez of La Monarca Bakery in Los Angeles.

“Whole coffee beans go into a grinder, and after grinding they are mixed with pressurized, near-boiling water to create an espresso shot which [then] drips into a cup to create the perfect shot of espresso to be drunk on its own or added into a latte or other beverage,” she says.

When shopping for an espresso machine, you’re likely to come across two main types: automatic and manual. Manual espresso machines are also called “piston machines” because they are driven by a piston and require some manual labor on the user’s part—namely pumping a lever to create the espresso.

They’re simple to use and—since they’re controlled manually—are beloved for reportedly better-tasting, customized coffee (if you’re at that level!) But, let’s be honest, for those looking for something delicious in a pinch, it’s a bit of a labor-intensive process.

For this reason, automatic espresso machines have reigned supreme in recent decades. With these machines, there’s no pumping on your part. You simply press a button and voilà—you’ve got yourself a delicious-tasting espresso. Most of these machines do the full monte: they grind the beans for you, pull the shot, and have other programmable options that help you create the perfect brew.

The 6 best automatic espresso machines

Jura, E8 Automatic Coffee Machine — $2,500.00

If you can fork up the cash, this automatic espresso machine is sure to not disappoint—and to last you years upon years. It offers 17 beverage options, including espresso, Americano, macchiato as well as 10 different grinding strength levels. It utilizes P.E.P.®, aka “pulse extraction process,” which involves forcing hot water through the ground coffee in short spurts or intervals to ensure full-flavor development. It has intelligent preheating capabilities to make sure that your cup is the perfect temperature every time. Other features include a professional, fine-foam frother, a separate spout for tea, and a high-res touchscreen that’s super easy to navigate.

Pros: State-of-the-art, custom brewing options, fine details.

Cons: Cost, potential milk splatter due to the placement of the spout.

Breville, Barista Express Espresso Machine — $750.00

This is a great espresso maker to have on your kitchen counter if you’re looking for top-notch coffee and espresso without the jaw-dropping price tag that can come with many on the market. With this espresso maker, you get quality espresso from whole coffee beans in a matter of seconds. It has digital temperature control (PID) technology that makes sure the temperature of each beverage is optimal every time and has a steam wand that lets you hand texture micro-foam milk to make your own artistic latte. “For those dedicated coffee drinkers, this machine offers more advanced brews that the average consumer wouldn’t necessarily appreciate,” adds Vazquez.

Pros: Professional recommended, custom brew options, steam wand and foamer.

Cons: Cost, potential limited grinding capabilities/customizations.

Gaggia Brera, Super-Automatic Espresso Machine — $437.00

For an even more affordable option that won’t take up as much space on your kitchen countertop, consider the Gaggia Brera Super-Automatic Espresso Machine. It has a Pannarello wand that froths cappuccinos and lattes to perfection, a user-friendly LED display with push-button controls, rapid steam technology for heating drinks up in a flash, and an easy-to-use (and clean) drip tray and water tank at the very front of the machine. It also comes with a 1-year warranty, which users greatly appreciate.

Pros: Small-space friendly, custom brew options, steam wand and foamer, easy to clean.

Cons:  Small water tank, small bean capacity.

Gevi, 20 Bar Espresso Machine — $160.00

If you’re looking for the most bang for you buck, this Gevi option has you covered. While not the fanciest option on this list, it’s a good bet for the first-time buyer who wants reliable coffee without the frills. There are three options for espresso: One shot, double shots, or manual-control if you want to control the coffee yourself. There are two thermostats (one for espresso, one for milk) to control the temperature, a fast heating system, cup warmer, and a manual steam wand for fancy drinks. For the price, it’s definitely one of the best on the market.

Pros: Price, easy to use, easy to clean, small-space friendly.

Cons: Not as customizable as other machines, small water tanka and bean capacity, limited options.

Philips 3200 Series, Fully Automatic Espresso Machine — $799.00

This espresso machine is great for people who love to make lattes at home. Its milk system is pretty impressive—the machine even comes with a milk carafe that mixes the milk perfectly for you at high speed and then automatically pours it atop your espresso. You don’t have to lift a finger! It’s fully customizable, allowing you to choose the shot volume, temperature, strength, and grind size and setting. Another major plus about this appliance is that it’s easy to clean. With no tubing, you simply have to detach the carafe and clean it with soap and water.

Pros: Easy to use, custom brew options, easy to clean.

Cons: Cost, small water tank and bean capacity.

De’Longhi, Dinamica TrueBrew Coffee and Espresso Machine — $1,000.00

DeLonghi has a reputation for impeccable products and high standards, so it’s no surprise that their automatic espresso machines have rave reviews. This one is best loved for its ability to brew iced coffee via its True Brew functionality. Using a longer grinding and pre-infusion time, along with a higher concentration of coffee, you get an ice coffee that tastes just as good as your favorite shop. It can also brew 17 other types of coffee beverages all within about 40-60 seconds. One downside compared to others on this list is that it doesn’t have an automatic milk frother—you’ll have to use the manual Panarello wand.

Pros: State-of-the-art features, custom brew options, iced coffee option.

Cons: Cost, no milk frother.

Breville, Oracle Espresso Machine — $2,200.00

For barista-style results from the comfort of your home, try the Breville Oracle, a pricey, yet high-quality machine that offers speed and ease of use. You can brew just about anything—espressos, Americanos, lattes, cappuccinos, you name it—using its automated technology to grind and tamp beans for you and then brew at the optimal temperature, richness and flavor.

It has a built-in burr grinder that uses an auger device to maintain consistency and prevent messes. It has dual stainless-steel boilers that pump simultaneously and create the perfect level of boldness at the right temperature. A separate air pump lets you customize your milk frothing—you can choose latte or cappuccino and the machine determines how much froth is needed.

Pros: State-of-the-art features, custom brew options, frothing options.

Cons: Cost, learning curve.

What to look for in an automatic espresso machine

Automatic espresso machines come with all the bells and whistles these days, so it’s a good idea to know what to look for when you’re shopping for one. Here are some of the best features, according to the pros.

Accessibility

Many of the newer machines have pretty impressive features like grind pressure profiling, flow-rate programming, and temperature control, notes Luis Espel, a barista at Willa’s Provisions in Tampa. “None of that means a thing if the interface is clunky and hard to use,” he says. “Always make sure you’re picking a machine that’s easy to adjust the settings on, otherwise, it’s very likely that baristas won’t want to fiddle with those settings anyways.”

Space

When searching for the right coffee espresso machine, Vazquez recommends making sure that it has enough space and an air-tight container to keep the whole beans from making contact with the air. “Air tightness is very important when it comes to keeping the coffee bean from losing its flavor and nutrients, drying out the beans in the process,” she says.

Water accessibility

Vazquez also recommends taking note of water accessibility when choosing an espresso machine. “Some home models require it to be hooked up to the water line, while others have a refillable water tank,” she says. “Those attached to the main waterline tend to automatically provide the correct amount of water for the type of brew, while the refillable tanks tend to require the user to add as much as needed.”

Volume capability

This mostly applies to those looking to buy an espresso machine for commercial use, as it’s a good idea to know that your machine can keep up with your customer demand. “The last thing you want is for an overwhelmed machine to crap-out during a rush,” says Katherine Bruce, owner of The Buttery Bar in Brooklyn.

Dependability

Plenty of espresso machines on the market today have issues with inconsistencies, malfunctions, and lack of access to replacement parts, notes Espel. For this reason, he recommends doing your research (i.e. reading reviews) and going with a trusted brand. “It can be exciting to have a machine no one else has, and it could end up being a great machine at the end of the day, but you don’t want to be missing out on amazing coffee without a technician around to fix or replace the issue,” he says.

Price

Chef Michael Johnson warns against trying to purchase the cheapest espresso machine you can find. “An espresso machine should be an investment,” he says. “Shop around and stay within your budget, but many cheaper espresso machines don’t tend to last very long and end up leaking and sitting in the back of your kitchen unused or needing to be replaced.”

Experts Say These Are the Best Detachable Shower Heads for Getting Squeaky Clean https://www.wellandgood.com/best-detachable-shower-heads/ Sun, 21 Aug 2022 17:00:09 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=900705 Most of us view taking a shower as routine task, but you can shake up your experience with some simple shower tools, or look into the benefits of a cold shower. For most of us, a detachable shower head is all you need to up-level your shower time because it offers the flexibility that many fixed shower heads don’t. It allows you to aim water where you want it to flow, reach—and thoroughly rinse—hard-to-reach spots on your body, or assist a loved one while they bathe. But like most home design and shower products, they’re not all created equal. The best detachable shower heads are user-friendly, made from durable materials that are lightweight enough to seamlessly maneuver in your hands, and attached by a long, flexible hose that enables freedom of movement in the shower. Simplify your search for your new bathroom accessory with our expert tips and plumber-approved finds, below.

The best detachable shower heads, at a glance

What to look for in a detachable shower head

Detachable (aka handheld) shower heads are available in a few designs. Many affix to the wall with a hose but, “if you have kids or somebody who may be disabled needing to sit down in the shower,” says Doyle James, president of Mr. Rooter Plumbing, a Neighborly company, you might prefer a height-adjustable unit that mounts to a slide bar. Otherwise, those who like a full soak might want to purchase a dual shower system with fixed and detachable heads.

Regardless of your preference, you’ll want to select a model with a long enough hose. According to Oren Dagan, CEO of home design platform Crewzz: “Finding a handheld shower hose that has the right length can help owners with their everyday tasks”—namely, “bath time with the kids, grooming your pets, and even cleaning the shower itself.” A handheld shower hose is usually 60 to 72 inches long, though you’ll find a 82-inch-long option on the list, too.

You’ll also want to think about what a shower head is made of. According to Maria Martin, an interior designer and the founder of the interior design app Design Appy: “You want a balance of high-quality materials and durability when you are working in a wet space.” Dagan recommends brass and stainless steel because they’re durable and rust resistant but to avoid plastic as “most shower heads made from plastic often retain more water buildup and see more cracks and scratches.”

According to James, however, plenty of shower heads are made of a variety of materials—plastic included—and this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “Solid metal shower heads are heavy,” says James. “In some cases, you might want it to be lighter because it’s something you’re handling.” That said, if you opt for a unit with plastic components, seek out options that use ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic, which is sturdy and can withstand high temperatures.

Finally, consider features that might be important to you, like self-cleaning nozzles, which “ensures the stream is delivered at its intended pressure,” says Martin, as well as built-in water filters or antimicrobial jets. You’ll also find that most detachable shower heads will have multiple spray patterns, which can elevate shower time into a pleasurable experience. You’ll want to think about the finish of your shower head, too—select one that matches with the fixtures in your bathroom or appeals to your aesthetic preferences.

To simplify your search, you will find nine of the best detachable shower heads below. They all adhere to the federally regulated water flow rate of 2.5 gallons per minute (GPM), and for those living in a state that demands it—or who just want to save water—a few are EPA WaterSense certified with a flow rate equivalent to or lower than 1.8 GPM.

As a bonus, it’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

Best budget

AquaDance, High-Pressure Handheld Shower With Hose
AquaDance, High-Pressure Handheld Shower With Hose — $18.00

Main materials: Stainless steel and ABS plastic

It also comes with brass fittings to eliminate connection leaks. A dial toggles among six spray settings, including a pause mode to limit water flow while you’re sudsing up or doing other things in the shower that don’t require water. Plus, it fits most standard-sized shower arms, making installation a breeze.

While this model operates at 2.5 GPM, the brand also offers a version with 1.8 GPM flow rate, but it’s made of different materials and offered in one finish.

Best water-saving

Niagara Conservation Earth Spa Shower Head
Niagara Conservation, Earth Spa Shower Head — $28.00

Main materials: ABS plastic and brass
Flow rate: 1.5 GPM or 1.75 GPM
Spray settings: 3
Available finishes: 2

If you’re a stickler about saving water, this WaterSense-certified shower head is a prime option. It operates at 1.5 GPM—the lowest flow rate featured on the list—while putting out a strong and steady stream of water. It has an ABS plastic handheld shower head for lightweight maneuverability and a stainless steel-wrapped hose that is 72 inches long. What’s more, you’ll also receive a bracket to hang the shower head. The head itself has three spray settings, plus a simple-to-use dial that allows you to switch among the various options. There is also a version with a 1.75 flow rate, which has likewise earned a WaterSense label from the EPA.

Keep in mind that it only has a flow rate of 2.5 GPM—a trade-off for those who want a unit with a flow rate equivalent to or lower than 1.8 GPM. While only available in a chrome finish, it’s a versatile option for most bathroom settings.

Best with a slide bar

Delta Faucet 9-Spray shower head
Delta, Faucet Slide Bar Handheld Shower — $144.00

The Delta shower head also features self-cleaning nozzles, nine spray settings, and has a flow rate of 1.75 GPM, earning it a WaterSense label from the EPA. The 82-inch-long hose allows for added flexibility.

While the pick above is made from ABS plastic, it’s also available in brass or stainless steel options. Keep in mind that the wall elbow isn’t included with this purchase, so you will have to purchase it separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is a detachable shower head?

Also known as a hand-held shower head, a detachable shower head mounts to the wall with a bracket or slide bar. Unlike most fixed shower heads though, it also has a hose to offer users more flexibility.

How do you install a detachable shower head?

To install a detachable shower head, you have two options: Installing it yourself or with the help of a professional. If you want to DIY, “many standard detachable shower heads can be self-installed with little to no fuss,” says Dagan.

“An important tip would be to find a wrench that has non-marring features to prevent scratching or denting of the shower head.” Martin adds that for these models, “the only materials needed for installation are thread seal tape and an adjustable wrench.

However, when selecting a higher-end model, Dagan recommends leaving it to the professionals—“I’d recommend going with a licensed plumber who has experience working with denser material plumbing, such as brass, cast iron, or stainless steel,” he says.
