Electric toothbrushes always felt like a scam to me. How much more can it really do than a typical toothbrush? And then I tried the Philips Sonicare and my life was forever changed. It feels like there are tiny people in your mouth individually scrubbing and shining each tooth for that just-left-the-dentist feeling. While these toothbrushes are certainly an investment, this Cyber Monday you can score one for $100—$70 less than usual.

The Philips Sonicare ExpertClean 7500 is available in black, white, and my personal favorite, pink. You can choose between four cleaning modes—clean, white, gum health, and deep clean—to get exactly what you need. Splitting your teeth into six sections, the brush vibrates when you've brushed one section sufficiently so you know when to move to the next one. It also vibrates to let you know when you're pushing too hard. Pair it with the free app to get progress reports to know how good of a job you do when brushing.

Electric toothbrushes are great for getting your mouth super clean, says Jonathan B. Levine, DMD, founder of JBL Dentistry in New York City.

“Research shows that even with the best manual toothbrushing habits, electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque, whitening teeth, stimulating and improving gum health, and a person’s overall oral hygiene,” says Dr. Levine, who recommends electric toothbrushes for a number of reasons. “The little micro-movements of the toothbrush head allow for you to brush more with each pass, and new technology also allows the toothbrush to assist and even improve brushing habits.”

The Philips Sonicare is a step up from regular electric toothbrushes as it uses sonic vibrations for a deeper clean, explains dentist Vanessa Creaven, DMD, co-founder of Spotlight Oral Care.

“A sonic toothbrush operates by generating ultrasound in order to aid in removing plaque and rendering plaque bacteria harmless,” says Dr. Creaven. “We recommend a sonic toothbrush over a non-electric toothbrush as the efficient, high-frequency brush movements ensure both toothpaste and oxygen are delivered to even the most inaccessible places. It is gentle and effective in removing plaque and discoloration, ensuring an amazing clean and in turn, long-term oral health.”

The four settings and three brush heads allow you to get a personalized clean depending on your needs. The clean setting allows you to brush your teeth for the standard two minutes, the white setting works to remove surface stains, the gum health setting pays close attention to your molars, and the deep clean setting provides a longer, more invigorating clean. The gum health and white settings automatically turn on when you attach the corresponding brush heads. The brush also comes with a carrying case that doubles as a USB charging station, making traveling with your Philips Sonicare super easy.

To get the most out of your toothbrush, change out the head every three to four months, as recommended by the American Dental Association. Not changing out your brush head can lead to frayed bristles which cause less effective plaque removal and thus harboring bacteria in your mouth and bad breath. Also, frayed bristles harbor bacteria more easily, which can be redeposited in your mouth.
