A Sleep Medicine Specialist Says These 7 Cooling Pillows Can Prevent Night Sweats https://www.wellandgood.com/best-cooling-pillows/ Thu, 06 Apr 2023 21:00:45 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1031963 Hot sleepers know: It’s not easy getting a good night’s rest. Whether it’s night sweats, hot flashes, or a case of bad dreams, there’s always something that’s keeping you up at night and leaving you drenched. The good news is that you can set up your bedroom to protect your body from sweltering hot conditions, and no, we’re not talking about lowering the temperature on your thermostat (ideal but expensive). Similar to cooling mattresses and bed sheets, the best cooling pillows, which are made of breathable materials that regulate temperature, are great options. Plus, they don’t cost a fortune. If your head, neck, and shoulders get a little extra sweaty in the p.m., check out these sweat-free options.

The best cooling pillows, at a glance:

Do cooling pillows actually work?

The short answer: Yes. Temperature is a big factor in a person’s ability to fall asleep, and cooling pillows bring down a sleeper’s body temperature. When a person sleeps hot, it can cause them to wake up more often in the night and not spend as much time in deeper stages of sleep, according to Peter Polos, MD, PhD, FCCP, FAASM, a sleep medicine specialist and sleep expert at Sleep Number. “Cooling pillows regulate temperature throughout the night and are made with materials that absorb excess heat and humidity to help the sleeper cool,” says Dr. Polos. “A cool sleep environment (best at 68 degrees Fahrenheit) can help promote sleep in general, and a cooling pillow can add to that.”

What to look for in a cooling pillow

Firmness is essential when narrowing down a cooling pillow, says Dr. Polos. “In general, a firmer pillow is associated with less neck and shoulder discomfort,” he explains. Firmer pillows are usually made of memory foam, latex, and down fill, whereas softer pillows can be made of down and down with feathers. However, softer pillows work best if you’re a stomach sleeper, as it puts less stress on the neck.

Cooling pillow materials

Dr. Polos also recommends checking the material before you buy. Cooling pillows are made with a variety of materials, including:

Gel

Gel pillows are infused with pockets of cooling gel, which “has a cool touch feel and helps draw heat away from the body,” says Logan Foley, certified sleep coach and managing editor at sleepfoundation.org. There are different designs, including gel pods, embedded gel layers, and gel infusions in the material of the pillow.

Latex

Latex pillows are usually made of 100 percent latex or latex derived from rubber. Of all the materials, latex is one of the most cooling materials because it’s porous, allowing ventilation of hot air. “Latex helps dissipate heat and promote airflow,” adds Foley.

Memory foam

Memory foam pillows are made of foam that’s engineered with viscose and elastic. While supportive, traditional block memory foam can retain more heat than shredded memory foam, so it’s best to stick with the latter if you sleep hot.

Down and feather fill

Down pillows are usually stuffed with natural filling from ducks and geese and are used primarily to keep people warm. However, down pillows tend to be more breathable than memory foam and are ideal for stomach sleepers due to their soft nature. On the other hand, feather fill is breathable because it leaves room for airflow and helps to maintain a cooler sleeping environment for any sweaty folks. If you have allergies or would prefer not to use animal feathers, you’ll want to avoid this filling.

Foley says that gel and latex are the most common materials found in cooling pillows due to its natural cooling capabilities.

How long do cooling pillows last?

Depending on the materials, cooling pillows should last between three and four years, says Foley. “Choosing a high-quality fill and firmness level for your sleeper type should help your pillow last longer,” says Foley.

With so many cooling pillow options, it can be quite the search to find the best option for you. Considering this, we did the leg work and rounded up the best cooling pillows of every budget, material, and firmness. Scroll down to see the top picks.

Why This Silk Pillowcase Is the One Bedding Item I’ll Always Splurge On https://www.wellandgood.com/brooklinen-mulberry-silk-pillowcase/ Fri, 31 Mar 2023 22:00:04 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1042161 I take my sleep very seriously. After all, we spend a third of our lives sleeping—might as well make the most of it. Also? Snoozing is also a foundational part of maintaining good health. For these reasons among so many more, it’s important to take stock of the bedding you use, from pillowcases and sheets to duvet covers and throw blankets. If there’s one bedding item I’ll always splurge on, it’s a silk pillowcase—namely the Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase ($50).

Why I love the Brooklinen silk pillowcase

When I first unpacked my Brooklinen silk pillowcase and put it on my pillow, New York had hit the dog days of summer (and if you know, you know). And while the A/C in my apartment was pumping (I have the electrical bills to prove it!), I still found myself waking up in the middle of the night with a pool of sweat around my head. Now, for context, I sleep on my back, but something about the warm weather paired with the friction between my curly hair and the pillow led to a total meltdown (literally).

I immediately noticed a difference the first time I used the silk pillowcase. The pillowcase felt soft to the touch and my neck felt cool for the first time in days. That night, I slept through the night and didn’t wake up with pieces of my hair stuck to my face and neck. The next morning, I wasn’t covered in a sweaty sheen—it was a heat wave miracle.

Silk, in general, is a temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking material that makes for an excellent choice in the summer (and the winter, too, since it helps maintain an optimal temperature). While I’ve tried plenty of silk and satin pillowcases, none impressed me as much as Brooklinen’s.

My hair is much more manageable

Fast forward to the following spring, I still couldn’t sleep on anything but my Brooklinen pillowcase. I genuinely felt like my best self every morning after sleeping on it. While the jury’s still out on whether or not my skin benefitted (as I said, I’m a back sleeper anyway), my hair has seen quite an improvement in terms of manageability and overall appearance. My hair, for once, doesn’t look as wild (frizzy, tangled) and I’m noticing less breakage.

With cotton pillowcases, I typically find a few pieces of breakage upon waking up in the morning, but since switching to the Brooklinen pillowcase, nada. And, since there isn’t any friction causing the breakage, my hair is the healthiest and thickest it’s looked in years. While it’s not totally the pillow’s doing (I’ve been trying to take extra-good care of my hair with nourishing products), I believe it’s an integral part of the routine I’ve established for myself.

I asked Sharon Dorram, celebrity colorist and owner of Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger, why exactly that might be. In short: It’s due to the fact that silk pillowcases don’t cause tension. “The biggest benefit of sleeping with a silk pillowcase is that the fabric protects the texture of your hair; when we toss and turn at night, we roll around on our heads, which causes static and breakage,” she explains. “A silk pillowcase is more gentle on your hair and even extends the life of your hairstyle.” Here’s a more in-depth breakdown of why silk pillowcases are so beneficial (and a roundup of the best ones).

What makes it so special—and worth the price tag

While the cool-to-the-touch feel was the first thing I noticed about the Brooklinen Mulberry Silk pillowcase, it’s the quality and ease of care that really hooked me. The pillowcase is made from 100 percent pure mulberry silk and boasts a momme count of 22. For those that don’t know, momme is basically the metric used to measure silk; the higher the number, the softer the fabric will be. The average momme is usually 19, but it can go as high as 25.

In addition, the silk fabric is OKEO-TEX certified, meaning it’s been made without any harmful pesticides or chemicals. It also holds up nicely in the washing machine. When I’m in a rush, I wash mine on cold with a pH-neutral detergent, but when I’m feeling fancy, I hand wash it in my sink. Either way, it looks beautifully pearlescent and luxurious after it lies flat to dry. I’ve washed this pillowcase about 80 times so far, and it’s just as lovely as it was when I first unboxed it.

I’ve slept with my Brooklinen pillowcase for eight months now and I don’t want to sleep on anything else again. Since switching to this heavenly option, I’ve noticed a major positive impact on my sleep (especially during weather extremes) and the overall look of my hair.

‘I’m a Chiropractor, and These Are the 9 Best Pillows I Recommend for Neck Pain’ https://www.wellandgood.com/best-pillows-for-neck-pain/ Wed, 29 Mar 2023 19:30:49 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1035119 Every now and then, it’s not uncommon to wake up to a stiff or painful neck. While poor posture and excessive stress can be root causes of the problem, so is sleeping in a funny angle. If you’re constantly waking up to neck pain on a daily basis (annoying, we know) and that pain is impacting your sleep, chiropractors say it may be time to take a second look at the likely culprit: your pillow. Pillows specifically designed for neck comfort can really work wonders on your neck, head, and spine, and are just what you need to kick stiffness, sore muscles, and pain out the door. While you’re waiting for your new pillow to be delivered, we recommend these neck massage techniques for some instant relief.

The best pillows for neck pain, at a glance:

What to look for in a pillow for neck pain

Chiropractors and sleep experts agree that the first quality to look for in a pillow for neck pain is support. That’s because “if the neck isn’t supported well, the muscles can tense up,” resulting in a stiff neck or soreness, and “impact the ability to fall asleep or the quality of sleep,” says Rita Roy, MD, MS, CEO of the National Spine Health Foundation. You can find support in materials like memory foam and down feathers, but it all comes down to personal preference and whether your cervical spine is supported.

While it can be tempting to stack your pillows for more oomph or use a thinner pillow, chiropractors say this isn’t the greatest idea. “A pillow that is too high, low, or stiff can cause strain on the neck muscles and aggravate existing neck pain or neck conditions,” Matthew Cavanaugh, DC, a chiropractor based in Louisiana, tells Well+Good. “It’s best to use a soft pillow that supports the natural curve of the cervical spine, such as a cervical pillow or memory foam.”

Finding the perfect pillow may take a few tries, so it may be helpful to test a few before you commit. Most brands offer free trials and returns, which is something you’ll want to take note of, especially if you’re investing in a pricier pillow.

Is it better to have a firm or soft pillow for neck pain?

As we mentioned before, Cavanaugh says that it’s generally better to stick to the softer side of things when it comes to choosing a pillow. Not only are soft pillows more flexible, they are less likely to cause strain on the neck and shoulder muscles. “They also provide more cushioning around sensitive areas in the neck and upper back,” he adds. Softer pillows—which can allow your head to rest in a comfortable position—can also be ideal if you suffer with chronic or frequent neck pain.

Shopping for pillows can be overwhelming—there are just so many options. Pillows come in so many different materials, fills, firmness, shapes, and sizes, but it shouldn’t be a difficult process to choose one. With this in mind, we tapped sleep experts and a chiropractor for guidance on the best pillows for neck pain. Read on to learn their recommendations.

I’m in My First Trimester of Pregnancy, and This Natural Rubber Mattress Has Helped Alleviate My Lower Back and Hip Pain https://www.wellandgood.com/earthfoam-mattress-review/ Sun, 19 Mar 2023 15:00:57 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1013903 As a quintessential Taurus, sleep is normally paramount to my wellbeing. But after recently learning I’m pregnant with my first child, my need for sleep has hit me especially hard. I can confidently say I’ve spent more time in my bed than most people these past few months.

As someone who has spent the majority of my decade-long career working for ethical and eco-friendly businesses, I’ve slowly made the switch over to brands and products that align with those values when possible. When it was time to retire my traditional spring mattress, I knew an eco-friendly model was next up on the list of sustainable swaps. My first choice? Earthfoam, a comfy, springy mattress that’s so green, it grows on trees.

No, Earthfoam doesn’t actually have an orchard of mattress-sprouting trees (although that would be cool). Rather, Earthfoam mattresses are made from the sap of Sri Lankan rubber trees, aka, natural latex, to give them their signature bounce. In a saturated, often misunderstood category,  the eco-friendly sleep brand holds its products to serious sustainable standards, ensuring sleepers like me get a healthy, restorative snooze night after night.

And it has. After two months of sleeping on Earthfoam’s mattress, I can honestly say it’s been a serious upgrade from my old mattress on just about every front, keeping me comfortable and supported as I navigate my first trimester. Keep reading for my full review, below.

Earthfoam, Mattress (Full) — $899.00

Available sizes: Twin-California King in either Medium or Firm.

Prices vary on mattress size.

The Earthfoam mattress: My full review

How it ships

While DTC mattress brands have been around for some time, this was my first foray into this category of online shopping. My first thought was, “How in the world is this going to get to me?” And once it arrived a mere few days later, my second question was, “How do I open this thing?”

After not finding anything online, I reached out to Earthfoam’s customer service team who promptly answered my question, instructing me to use the help of a second person to move the box into the bedroom, open the box, then cut away the compression wrapper (which is paper, btw) that was keeping the large, queen-sized mattress in a tight roll. I enlisted the help of my co-tester, my husband, and once getting over the fear that it might pop open like a can of crescent rolls (it wasn’t nearly as dramatic as we anticipated), it promptly unrolled and sprung to full thickness. As the customer service team had ensured, we were able to sleep on the mattress immediately after. I will note that there was a slight scent upon opening it up that we were told could happen due to the natural rubber. But it quickly dissipated and was not bothersome, even for my pregnancy-sensitive nose.

While I’ve only been testing it for about two months, I appreciate that Earthfoam offers a 100-night sleep trial for mattresses and toppers and a 10-year warranty for mattresses, in addition to free shipping to the contiguous United States and no-questions-asked free returns. (Note: The brand does ship to Hawaii, Alaska and outside the U.S., but the customer is responsible for all shipping costs including duties and taxes as applicable.)

How it feels

Earthfoam has two options of firmness to choose from: Medium and Firm. My husband and I opted for the “Medium” and find it to be firmer than our “medium” firm bed we had previously. If you are someone who definitely likes your mattress to feel like you are sleeping on a cloud, this mattress may not be your pick (although your doctor may suggest otherwise.)

Overall, my husband and I both feel that despite it being firmer than we were used to, it is super supportive, especially our lower backs, spines, and hips (which has become more important as we’ve aged over the years and as I navigate pregnancy).

How it sleeps

When first learning about the Earthfoam mattress, my husband was skeptical since he had heard that foam mattresses run hot, and he was concerned that it would not be cool enough for him. But, similar to clothing made of natural fibers versus synthetics, the mattress does a great job at adjusting to our body temperatures and variant Southern California weather.

Each mattress features five plush layers, two of which (the base and first layer) are made from natural latex. The third is a layer of organic wool batting to ensure thermoregulation, while also serving as natural fire retardant. On top of that is organic cotton batting that holds everything together and protects it from wear-and-tear. And on top of that, is an organic cotton face that’s cool to the touch and keeps my husbands night sweats at bay.

Sustainability

From a sustainability perspective, Earthfoam ticks off most boxes. The materials alone are impressive, as is the supply-chain, which includes Fair-Trade sourcing from Sri Lanka, ethical sourcing from New Zealand, and a fair labor at a family-run factory in Illinois. Each of these claims is backed with six different third-party certifications, including the Fair For Life fair trade certification, and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification. As mentioned, mattresses and toppers are compression wrapped in paper, while the pillows are shipped in biodegradable bags. And the products last long, a key part of the sustainability equation. According to the brand, natural foam rubber is famous for its durability and the mattresses are tested to last up to 3x longer than most mattresses, ensuring your investing in a product that’s built to last and stay out of landfills.

Cost

If you’ve gotten this far, you are likely thinking, “Okay, but how much does this cost?” If you’ve bought a mattress before, you may have been sticker-shocked like myself the first time I was required to make this adult purchase. Add on the words “organic” and “fair-trade” and the suspense may be building.

That said, when comparing across other popular direct-to-consumer mattress brands, I find Earthfoam’s prices to be comparable. The mattresses come in the sizes Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King and range from $699 – $1,499 depending on the size you buy. If you’re not ready to buy a full mattress but are curious, the brand also offers a mattress topper ($299-$399) in various sizes and a pillow ($99), which put much less of a dent in your bank account.

Tl;Dr

I’ll sum up my review best in the words of my husband. On the morning after our first night with our Earthfoam Organic mattress, I woke up to him saying groggily, “This mattress is comfortable.” Well folks, there you have it. The skeptical, partner who sleeps hot and the pregnant, sustainability-loving, heavy-sleeper partner both agree that this mattress is a definite win for our bedroom. Here’s hoping our soon-to-be infant can give us the courtesy of a goodnight’s rest like our Earthfoam mattress has.

Meet the ‘Magic Linen’ Sheets That Are Absurdly Expensive but Transformed My Quality of Sleep Forever https://www.wellandgood.com/magic-linen-sheets/ Fri, 17 Mar 2023 22:00:58 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1034469 My bed is my sanctuary, and I take its comfort level seriously. That being said, I’ve never spent more than $150 on sheets and, while I believe you can find a fantastic set for that price (or even lower if you’re a savvy HomeGoods shopper like me), my sleep completely changed when I tried Magic Linen’s luxury bedding, which includes sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers, plus some gorgeous linen throw blankets, and convinced me that investing in high-quality bed linens—if you can swing it—can make the world of a difference in the quality of sleep.

From the pillows to the duvet cover, my bed is dressed head-to-toe in Magic Linen’s stunning natural textiles. And, while I love everything, it’s the sheets that have been a total game-changer for me—keep scrolling to hear out the “why.”

These are the ultimate warm weather sheets

When I first gave my bed its Magic Linen makeover, Los Angeles was experiencing one of its many middle-of-summer heat waves (I’m talking 100-degree+ heat), where it gets so hot that the thought of any covers (even thin sheets) makes you flinch. I’m typically a deep sleeper, however, my sleep quality totally plummets during the summer as I need to be buried under covers to fall and stay asleep, and that is simply not possible when it’s still 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the middle of the night. Enter: The Magic Linen Sheet Set.

Upon stretching the fitted sheet over my Avocado Green mattress and draping the flat sheet on top, I immediately noticed a difference in temperature when I slid into bed. Normally, I would kick the covers off as soon as my head hits the pillow, but this felt different—it was cozy yet cool, and I felt like I could pull the covers up to my neck without breaking a sweat. That night, I slept fully and deeply through the entire night without waking up to push the covers down, take off a layer of clothing, or go sleep on the couch (something I do often when I get too hot in my bed).

Linen, in general, is naturally temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking, making it an excellent choice for the summer (but also great for the winter, since you can easily layer). And, while I have tried other linen sheets before, the Magic Linen set really upped the ante while also keeping a luxe soft-to-the-touch feel that got better and better with every wash.

But they’re also superb in the winter, too

By the time winter rolled around (which is very late in Los Angeles—usually January to March are our coldest months), I was still completely obsessed with my sheets and wondered how they might perform against low temperatures. I am typically someone who changes to flannel bedding during the chilly season and, to be completely honest, I wasn’t holding my breath, since linen is known for being a warm-weather fabric (and how could it possibly be as amazing as flannel?!). But, much to my surprise, the sheets (and duvet cover) kept me super warm and comfortable because of their temperature-regulating properties, which give you that “just right” feel and never get too cool or too warm, which is ideal for sleep quality.

What makes them so special—and worth that price tag

While temperature regulation was the first thing I noticed about the Magic Linen sheets, it was actually their quality that stood out to me the most (and continues to impress). The sheets are made from OEKO-TEX certified 100 percent flax with a 190 gr/m2 weight and are stonewashed so they feel so soft and not stiff, unlike other linen fabrics. They also hold up nicely in the washing machine. I barely follow the recommended care instructions—instead, I throw them in the wash on warm and then dry them on medium heat—and have not had any issues with washing. The brand does recommend not drying them all the way and I agree that it is the best way to care for them because they tend to get super wrinkly when twisted and tangled together in the dryer. I wait for mine to get around 95 percent dry and then hang them to soften the wrinkles. I’ve washed my sheets around 50 times so far, and they are still just as durable as they were when I unboxed them, but 10 times softer.

I’ve slept between Magic Linen sheets for almost a year now and can’t imagine my sleep without them. I am lucky to be a deep sleeper and never thought sheets could make that much of a difference in my quality of sleep. However, since switching to the luxe linen bedding, I have noticed a major difference in my sleep, especially when extreme weather hits (and we’ve certainly experienced a lot of that in Los Angeles over the last year).

Sleep Experts Agree: These 8 Best Wedge Pillows Give the Boot to Snoring, Acid Reflux, and Congestion https://www.wellandgood.com/best-wedge-pillows/ Thu, 16 Mar 2023 23:00:48 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1031111 In the market for a wedge pillow? You’re in the right spot. Sometimes, a quality pillow is exactly what you need to enhance your quality of rest. Hot sleeper? A breathable pillow that vents hot air may be great for you. Experience neck pain? Invest in a memory foam pillow. The list goes on. However, if you’re battling chronic issues like snoring, acid reflux, and nasal congestion—which can hamper your relationship with your bed and put a damper on your breathing—a regular pillow just won’t do. For these conditions, sleep doctors actually recommend loading your bedroom with a wedge pillow.

The best wedge pillows, at a glance:

How do wedge pillows work

“Wedge pillows feature a gentle slope to create a slight incline, supporting and elevating your neck and head,” says Shelby Harris, PsyD, the director of sleep health at Sleepopolis. By elevating the head and upper back, this “reduces pressure from the upper airways, preventing them from collapsing and alleviating snoring,” explains Po-Chang Hsu, MD, MS, a medical content expert at Sleeping Ocean based in Boston, Massachusetts. This elevation also works wonders on acid reflux by keeping the sleeper elevated to prevent acid from getting into the esophagus, the main cause of acid reflux, Dr. Hsu adds. And for those with nasal congestion, Dr. Hsu says that “sleeping elevated will allow gravity to move the mucus down, preventing it from building up in one’s nose.”

What to look for in a wedge pillow

Just like a quality mattress, pillow, and bed sheets—choosing a wedge pillow is based on your personal preference. But experts want you to keep a few things in mind. One factor to consider is the incline of the pillow. According to Dr. Hsu, wedge pillows fall between 30 and 45 degrees. “A lower incline is best suited for people who want to use their wedge pillow under the knees and legs (for instance, to reduce pressure from the hips and lower back),” says Dr. Hsu. On the other hand, a higher incline is best suited for people with sleep apnea, acid reflux, or nasal congestion because it elevates the head and upper back to prevent pressure and mucus buildup.

Dr. Hsu also says that material is important. Common materials include memory foam; however, it tends to accumulate heat unless it’s infused with gel particles. “Latex, albeit more expensive, can maintain a neutral temperature throughout the night” and are more durable, says Dr. Hsu. The last thing to check for: firmness. Dr. Hsu recommends a medium, medium-firm, or firm wedge pillow in order to have sturdy support throughout the night. He says that medium-firm models are best suited for side sleepers and those who want deeper pressure relieve and firm pillows are recommended for back sleepers.

Below, you’ll find sleep doctor-approved wedge pillows of every height, budget, and material that will kick congestion, snoring, and acid reflux to the curb. Sleep dreams!

This Is How Often You Need To Replace Your Mattress (Because You Know You Want To) https://www.wellandgood.com/how-often-to-replace-mattress/ Tue, 14 Mar 2023 19:02:29 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1029521 No mattress is as comfortable as your own mattress. At least, isn’t that how you should feel? Unfortunately, like many things used daily (or nightly, in this case), your mattress won’t last forever. So, how do you know when it’s time to replace your mattress?

“Over time, any mattress can lose its shape and begin to sag, creating dips and lumps—and an uncomfortable mattress can interfere with your ability to get a good night’s sleep,” says Bridget Chapman, certified sleep coach at Sleepopolis. Indeed, even the best bed-in-the-box mattresses or traditional varieties degrade in quality as the years wear on.

When and how often should you replace your mattress?

The average lifespan of a mattress is seven to 10 years, and manufacturers will typically recommend replacing it within this time period. For Chapman and Rebecca Fair, certified sleep coach at Mattress Nerd, the answer isn’t so straightforward.

Various factors influence the longevity of a mattress, the first of which is mattress type. Not all mattresses are created equal, and some options may last longer than others. Among the most popular mattress types available, Fair and Chapman agree that those made from latex are the longest-lasting variety. Another factor that may affect mattress lifespan is a person’s sleep position. According to Chapman: “When you sleep in the same position and in the same spot on your mattress every night, your mattress is more prone to sag and wear prematurely from the constant pressure of your body.” Also, Fair adds that if a person has a larger build or they share a bed with a partner, it can accelerate a mattress’s decline.

All that is to say, there is no one answer to the question of how often or when to replace a mattress because mattresses, bodies, and sleeping habits are all different. However, if you aren’t sleeping as well as you should, your bed might need replacing. This is especially true if you notice any of the following issues with your mattress.

5 signs that it’s time to replace your mattress

1. It’s uncomfortable

If your mattress is leaving you more restless than well-rested, it might be time to replace it. “Over time, the structural integrity of the support and comfort materials in any type of mattress will degrade, resulting in a gradual decline in how the mattress sleeps,” says Chapman. Also, she adds: “If you’re waking up with pain that you didn’t fall asleep with, then it’s time to consider changing your mattress.”

2. It’s visibly damaged or worn

Is your mattress sagging or lumpy? Does it have permanent imprints in spots you routinely sleep on? Are there coils or springs poking out from underneath the surface? If you’ve said yes to one or all of the above, “these are definite signs it’s time to change your mattress,” says Chapman. “The degrading materials will almost certainly impact your quality of sleep at night.”

3. It’s noisy

If you hear creaking, popping, or squeaking each time you lay down or shift in bed, these might point to a decline in a mattress’s structural integrity—which, as mentioned, can have a major impact on sleep quality. According to Fair, this is particularly evident in hybrid or innerspring mattresses with coils or springs, which tend to make unwanted noise as they weaken over time.

4. It’s making you sick

“An older bed that’s had time to collect dust, bacteria, dead skin cells, allergens, and more can cause people to feel under the weather more often than usual,” says Fair. If you find that you wake up stuffy or with scratchy eyes, even though you frequently clean and deodorize your mattress, you might want to consider investing in a new one.

5. It’s more than seven years old

While not all mattresses need to be replaced after seven years, it’s a good indication of when you may need to think about buying a new one. As Alexandra Duma, DC, DACBSP, a New York-based sports chiropractor, previously told Well+Good: “No matter how great your mattress is, over time it will degrade in the quality of support it provides for your body.”

How to replace your mattress

When your mattress is near the end of its lifespan or it becomes a pain to sleep on, you’ll definitely need to replace it. “Replacing an old mattress is so important for avoiding aches, pain, loss of sleep, poor sleep quality, and the possibility of becoming sick.” says Fair, adding that, “an unsupportive mattress is a recipe for developing body sores or feeling generally uncomfortable on a daily basis.”

That said, buying a new mattress will often cost you a pretty penny. Fortunately, you don’t have to pay full price to get a quality mattress. Besides yearly President’s Day sales, the best time to buy a mattress at discounted prices are during holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day. Retailers also typically slash prices on mattresses on Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, but buyers have to act fast as stock is usually limited and deals are often short-lived.

As you shop for a new mattress, you’ll ideally want to try it before you buy it. It can be hard to know whether you’ll like how it sleeps or if the mattress’s firmness level works best for you without having tried it in person. When buying a mattress online, it’s also important to look for one with a trial period and, better yet, a generous return policy if for any reason it doesn’t work out for you.

If buying a new mattress isn’t in the budget? A mattress topper can serve as a solution, albeit a temporary one. “Think of a mattress topper as a ‘bandaid’ in this situation,” says Fair, “they can hold you over by maintaining a supportive surface to sleep on until you have the time or money to get a new bed.” If you’re considering buying a mattress topper, she recommends one that’s durable and supportive, such as latex models. Keep in mind that “even with help from the best-quality mattress topper, an old, uncomfortable mattress is likely to still cause you backaches or sleeplessness,” says Chapman.

How to maximize the lifespan of your mattress

Indeed everyone will have to replace their mattresses at one point or another, but there are a few things that you can do to maximize the lifespan of the mattress you already own. The first and arguably most important thing you can do is rotate your mattress at least every few months. “For latex and foam mattresses, you can do this every six months or so, and for innerspring or hybrid beds, every two to five years,” says Fair. “Doing so prevents sagging or indentation from being localized to one area over years of use—in turn, helping to maintain the feel of your bed’s surface for longer.” Chapman adds: “This also helps minimize the risk of pain or discomfort when you sleep.”

Second, make sure your mattress itself receives proper support. According to Chapman: “It’s a good idea to make sure there is a solid platform under your mattress to ensure it wears evenly and the way it is intended to.” You might also want to consider investing in a mattress protector. “Using a mattress protector can help keep your bed clean and stain free,” says Fair. In addition, it safeguards your bed from regular wear and tear, thereby, helping extend its lifespan.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know when I need a new mattress?

“When you realize your bed is either on the decline, or completely unsupportive, I would recommend replacing it as soon as possible to avoid the development of aches, pains, or loss of sleep in general,” says Fair. Sagging or lumpiness are often signs that you need to replace your mattress, and so are permanent body impressions. If you wake up tired and achy in the mornings, it could also mean that it’s time to think about investing in a new bed.

How long should a decent mattress last?

On average, a mattress’s lifespan is anywhere from seven years or longer. While there’s no firm answer on how long a decent mattress should last, you’ll likely want it to last you for as long as possible. More often than not, a mattress made from quality materials will last longer than its counterparts—and among the most common mattress types available, latex mattresses have the longest lifespan.

Can a mattress last for 20 years?

It’s possible that a mattress can last 20 years, though it may be unlikely. The average mattress can last up to 10 years before its quality starts to decline. However, you can maximize its lifespan by implementing a few regular maintenance practices. Experts recommend rotating the bed once every few months and ensuring it is supported by a sturdy platform. Plus, investing in a mattress protector can keep it clean and helps safeguard against premature wear and tear.

‘I’m a Sleep Expert, and These Are the 10 Best Pillows for Side Sleepers’ https://www.wellandgood.com/best-side-sleeper-pillows/ Fri, 03 Mar 2023 01:00:44 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1026007 If you’ve ever spent the night flipping and fluffing the pillow in sleepy frustration, then you know the importance of a good one can’t be overstated—and your choice can drastically determine the quality of your sleep. That being said, you’re going to want to find a pillow that suits your unique sleep style and position (and they have different meanings, BTW). Do you sleep on your back and wake up feeling sore and achy the next morning? Need pillows for back pain? Are you switching positions all night long? And did you know that there are pillows specially designed to address the needs of combination sleepers too?

Personally, I’m a side sleeper all the way—and according to sleep studies, most Americans are too. Because side sleeping is easily one of the most popular sleep positions around, there are plenty of pillow options to pick from (a blessing and a curse if you’re easily overwhelmed by choice like me). To make finding the best pillow for side sleepers easy, we asked sleep experts for guidance.

Best pillows for side sleepers at a glance:

Best overall: Layla Kapok Pillow ($109)
Best memory foam: Coop Home Goods Memory Foam Pillow ($72)
Best for neck/back pain: UTTU Sandwich Pillow ($45)
Best body pillow: Milliard U Shaped Total Body Support Pillow ($43)
Best for shoulder pain: Cushion Lab Deep Sleep Pillow ($98)
Best value: DreamyBlue Premium Pillow ($36)
Best latex: Saatva Latex Pillow ($165)
Best cooling: Purple Harmony Pillow ($161)
Best down pillow: Parachute Down Side Sleeper Pillow ($159)
Best adjustable: Marlow Pillow ($65)

What kind of pillow should a side sleeper use?

Sleep experts agree that the best pillows for side sleepers are the ones that sufficiently fill that gap between your shoulder and the side of your head, and support neck and spinal alignment—otherwise you could risk neck and upper back pain come morning.

“Side sleepers should choose pillows that are firm enough to align their head and neck with their spine, yet cushioned enough to alleviate pressure points on their shoulders and necks,” says Susan Miller, a certified sleep technician RPSGT, at SleepMattressHQ.com. Miller goes on to say that latex or memory foam pillows are often the types that can hit that sweet spot of cushioned and supportive. “Foam or latex pillows typically offer the best support that side sleepers need while sleeping,” agrees Logan Foley, a sleep science coach and product expert at SleepFoundation.org.

While you may be tempted to stack pillows in search of more support (I myself am guilty of this), the experts agree that sleeping with more than one pillow isn’t a good idea. “Using two pillows is not recommended for side sleepers because it can cause the head to be positioned too high, which can cause neck and shoulder pain,” explains Miller. “Instead, use one pillow that provides the necessary support and sufficient cushioning.” If you really want to use two pillows, try putting the second pillow between your knees. “While it’s not necessary by any means, some side sleepers prefer to use two pillows—one for their head and one to place between their knees to maintain a neutral spine alignment,” says Bridget Chapman, a sleep expert and certified sleep science coach at Sleepopolis.

What should side sleepers look for when pillow shopping?

Loft

According to the experts, the single most important thing to look for when choosing a pillow for side sleepers is the loft, or height, of your pillow. Remember the gap between your shoulder and side of your head I mentioned earlier? A pillow with sufficient loft should fill that space comfortably. “Side sleepers should generally seek a pillow with a higher loft (4″ or more) to help them maintain a neutral spine alignment,” says Chapman. “Pillows with adjustable loft are something that side sleepers should keep an eye out for since they allow you to fine-tune the height of your pillow to optimize comfort and support,” explains Ryan Fiorenzi, a certified sleep coach and founder of StartSleeping.org.

Material & Fill

When it comes to material, sleep experts have several recommendations. “A good pillow material to look for when shopping for a side sleeper is shredded foam,” says Elisa Regulski, a certified sleep science coach and editor at Mattress Clarity. “Shredded foam will be plush enough to offer neck support, but is also responsive and will allow you to sink into it just enough to keep proper spinal alignment.” Latex and memory foam pillows were also repeat recommendations from sleep experts, because they offer support while still cradling your neck and shoulders to keep you comfy and properly aligned. “Many side sleepers prefer memory foam in both their pillow and their mattress to give them the contouring and pressure relief they need at the neck, shoulders, and hips,” Chapman adds.

Shape

Experts say the shape of your pillow is key to keeping your neck and head supported, and preventing pain that may come as a result of side sleeping. “If you’ve ever experienced neck pain and find the base of your neck unsupported as a side sleeper, you may want to look out for a cervical or contoured pillow,” advises Fiorenzi. That said, it’s important to remember that the best pillow shape for you will depend on your body type (read: the space between your shoulders and head), and your own personal preference.

Firmness

To keep the void between your shoulder and head filled, you’ll want to choose a pillow with adequate firmness and support that’ll keep its shape all night long (because who likes a flat pillow?). While the degree of firmness is largely up to personal preference, experts recommend staying within the firm category for optimal support. “Side sleepers should look for a pillow that provides support without being too firm,” says Miller. “Side sleepers are generally going to be most comfortable on a medium-firm pillow.”

I Tested These Oprah-Approved Bed Sheets, and Now I’m Never Switching Back to My Regular Set https://www.wellandgood.com/cozy-earth-bamboo-sheets-review/ Tue, 28 Feb 2023 15:00:26 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1023435 As someone who has a hard time falling asleep at night, let me tell you: your bedding makes a huge difference. Just like a supportive mattress and quality pillow, bed sheets have equally important functions to helping you sleep better at night, cocooning you and regulating your body temperature when things get sweaty.

I rarely upgrade my bedding, but considering we spend a third of our lives sleeping, I thought I’d test out a new set of sheets this year to see if I could find a set that could check off all the boxes (those mainly being comfort, and durability, but if they possessed some kind of ability to help me fall asleep faster, they’d be awarded brownie points for sure). After hearing all the rave about the Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheets—which happen to be Oprah-approved—I decided to test them out myself see what all the hype was about. Keep scrolling to find out whether they’re worth the internet and celeb buzz.

cozy earth bamboo sheet set
Cozy Earth, Bamboo Sheet Set (Queen) — $295.00

Originally $369, now $295

Made of 100 percent viscose derived from bamboo, these featherlight sheets are breathable, naturally hypoallergenic, and super soft. They’re ideal for people with sensitive skin and eczema, and come in a reusable carrying tote that makes transport easy.

Sizes available: Twin to split king

Colors: 5

  • Pros:
  • Silky soft
  • Temperature-regulating
  • Easy to wash
  • Pilling-resistant

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Come in five colors only

What happened when I tried the Cozy Earth bamboo sheets

I tested these bed sheets on my cooling mattress for two weeks and can confirm: these are the softest sheets I’ve ever owned. Sheets that I’ve used in the past felt like sand paper, but not with these bamboo sheets. These lightweight ones are constructed of 100 percent viscose derived from bamboo, mimicking silk and giving them a lush and extra soft feel. After giving the sheets a go, I found that these sheets don’t rub against or irritate my sensitive and eczema-prone skin.

cozy earth bed sheet review
Photo: Author

Since I have eczema, I find that heat-trapping sheets cause me to itch. However, bamboo sheets and pillow cases tend to be super breathable. “This type of fabric [viscose from bamboo] allows for better temperature regulation of skin, and can make for a reasonable option for those with atopic dermatitis or eczema,” says Rachel Nazarian, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York. Naturally, bamboo sheets are hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, and moisture-wicking, absorbing sweat—an irritant for people with eczema. As a hot sleeper, I don’t find myself sneezing up a storm in my bedroom, which can get dusty from time to time, or busting out in a sweat. Count on Cozy Earth to make soaked sheets a thing of the past.

As a girlie of aesthetics, I love how these sheets come in five neutral colors, from white to beige to grey. Unfortunately, these sheets don’t come in any bright or bold colors; however, you can decorate with ornate pillows or colorful comforters, if color is your thing. Since the viscose is weaved closely together, the sheets are pill-resistant and don’t nick even against abrasive or sharp surfaces. With the proper care, I think these sheets will hold up for the long run. Plus, they come packaged in a reusable white tote with durable handles, making the set easy to store or travel with.

What’s included?

Every sheet sheet set comes with a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillow cases while the king set comes with king-sized pillowcases.

Sizing

The sets retail for (at the time of publication) and are available in the following sizes:

  • Twin / Twin XL ($255)
  • Full ($279)
  • Queen ($295)
  • King ($327)
  • California King ($335)
  • Split King ($351)

How to care for your sheets

The best way to care for your sheets is by machine washing them in cold water. The brand recommends throwing them in the washer on a regular cycle with detergent. Fabric softener or bleach is not recommended. You can also freshen up your sheets by hanging them in sunlight for a few hours every four to six months, per the brand. One thing I did notice after sleeping on the sheets is that they crease easily, so hang drying them might help with the wrinkles.

Since sleeping on Cozy Earth’s bamboo sheets, I’ve noticed fewer occasions of itchy skin, sweaty nights, and disruptions to my sleep. You can snooze peacefully, too (fine, brownie points awarded). For a limited time, the bamboo sheets—which originally retail for $369 for a Queen—are being slashed to $295, a 20 percent savings.

Silk Pillowcases Are Famously Better for Your Skin and Hair—These Are the 12 Best Ones To Snooze On https://www.wellandgood.com/silk-pillowcases/ Sun, 26 Feb 2023 15:00:15 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1018233 Fun fact: we spend nearly one-third of our lives sleeping (or attempting to do so), which means every aspect of our sleep routine deserves careful consideration. This includes pillowcases. I mean, if we’re going to be spending one-third of our lives with our heads and faces resting on something, it should be the best, right? Right. So if you’re still sleeping on a regular cotton pillowcase, it’s high time you thought about making the switch to silk. Not only will you feel incredibly fancy snoozing on silk pillowcases, but your hair and skin will be better for it, too, giving “beauty sleep” a whole new meaning.

The best silk pillowcases at a glance:

Why use a silk pillowcase?

Less breakage and frizz

If you’ve ever woken up with a gnarly case of bedhead, then you already know why silk pillowcases are so necessary. Unlike traditional cotton pillowcases that can pull on your strands while you toss and turn in your sleep, silk pillowcases have a smooth, soft texture that reduces friction on your hair. This means less tangles, less bedhead, and less breakage. “Silk pillowcases are beneficial for hair because the smooth silk fabric helps to prevent tension on the hair that can lead to breakage,” explains Gina Rivera, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Phenix Salon Suites. Rivera explains that since they’re naturally less abrasive, silk pillowcases are great at retaining the hair’s natural oils, keeping strands softer and more hydrated for longer. “I also recommend using a silk pillowcase after getting chemical services such as hair color, highlights, and perms,” she says.

Less skin irritation and creasing

Silk pillowcases help reduce the friction between your pillow and your skin too, which means less sheet marks, less skin irritation, and (maybe) even less fine lines and wrinkles over time. “Silk pillowcases are touted to be hypoallergenic, meaning they are less likely to irritate your skin or cause an allergic reaction,” explains Jodi LoGerfo, DNP, APRN, a family nurse practitioner who specializes in dermatology at Orentreich Medical Group in New York City. “If you have eczema or psoriasis, a silk pillowcase can possibly help your skin feel better.” Silk pillowcases also help diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles over time, and can combat acne and blemishes (though Dr. LoGergo notes that the acne benefits are purely anecdotal.)

Less product waste

Let’s face it—you put a lot of time and effort into your skin-care routine, but if you’re sleeping on anything but silk, your coveted skin-care products are getting soaked up by your pillowcase, not your skin. Silk absorbs way less moisture than other materials, which means the ingredients in all your serums, moisturizers, and oils are better absorbed by your skin (as they should be!) Sleeping on silk also ensures you’ll experience less dryness come morning, which is a huge plus.

Silk vs. satin

The biggest difference between silk and satin pillowcases is that silk is a natural fiber, while satin is a woven fabric. Because of this, silk is usually softer to the touch, and more expensive. However, experts say that satin does offer similar hair and skin benefits, with some caveats. “Satin is supposed to be non-absorbent, which means it can keep moisture on the skin and hair,” says Dr. LoGerfo.

Rivera agrees, saying both silk and satin are good for your hair, but silk’s superior lack of absorbency makes it particularly suited for those who like to sleep with masks or leave-in conditioners on their hair, or those who are more prone to breakage. “Silk tends to be less absorbent so the hair can retain product and moisture more efficiently,” she explains. “Satin is also a good choice as a standard pillowcase because it’s gentle on the hair and, like silk, it helps prevent tension, and reduce frizz and tangles that can lead to breakage.”

How to choose a silk pillowcase

Look at the momme weight

Just like thread count is key when shopping for bedsheets, you’ll want to consider the momme—the measuring unit for the weight and quality of silk—of your silk pillowcase before you buy. Generally, you’ll want to shop for pillowcases with a 19-25-momme (the higher, the better.) Go any lower, and you’ll likely find that the pillowcase feels thinner and is more likely to tear after a couple of uses.

Always check the care instructions

Even though silk pillowcases harbor less bacteria than traditional cotton, they’ll still need to be washed every so often, so it’s important to know what you’re getting into as far as maintenance is concerned. Most (but not all) silk pillowcases are machine washable on a delicate setting, but you should check the care instructions before buying so you know exactly what it’ll take to maintain your silk pillowcase’s softness.

It features a no-fuss zipper closure, and comes in a range of fun and neutral colors too. The only reason that it doesn’t get best overall is because it doesn’t have the amount of reviews the Blissy one has, and comes in less colors, too.

But it’s still amazing:  “After some time of using this as my first silk pillowcase, I can truly say that it has calmed both my skin and hair,” said one Quince shopper in a 5-star review. “It is light and smooth, and I’m so glad I came across this! Best for clearer skin

night silk plus silk pillowcase on a white background
Night, Silk Plus Pillowcase — $50.00

Available sizes: Standard-King

One side of this Night Silk Plus Pillowcase is made of mulberry silk—which, as we’ve learned, helps skin retain nourishment for a softer, smoother feel—and the other side is made of rayon, which promises to wick away moisture and bring balance to oily and combination skin. So basically, this 2-in-1 pillowcase gives you the freedom to flip or flop depending on your skin’s needs. Pretty cool right?

“I love the feel of the Night pillowcases. I no longer wake up with deep fabric lines in my face, and I don’t find hair all over my pillow,” wrote one shopper in a 5-star review. “The material is so soft against my skin and very gentle with my hair. I’m very happy with these pillowcases. It’s a great way to get a little extra care while you sleep.”

Best for fine lines and wrinkles

morpheus silk pillowcase in a box
Herb + Flora, Morpheus Pillowcase — $80.00

Available sizes: Standard

If smoother looking skin is what you’re after, you might want to invest in this Herb+Flora pillowcase. Every fiber in the Morpheus silk pillowcase is woven with copper fibers (an essential mineral said to support skin-health), to help boost skin radiance and diminish the look of fine lines when used over time. And did we mention that it looks (and feels) as fancy as it sounds?

“I know it’s bad for wrinkles, but I’m a face sleeper. Can’t help it, I’ve tried,” wrote one Herb+Flora shopper in a 5-star review. “The thing about this pillowcase besides the comfort and aesthetic is obvious—when I wake up in the morning, I can tell my skin has absorbed my face product and not my bedding. Nothing worse than waking up to an oily pillowcase, [that] doesn’t happen with this one!!! 1000% recommend.”

Zimasilk boasts 31,000 (!!) 5-star ratings on Amazon, so you know it’s worth the hype. Reviewers recommend washing it on a delicate cycle and hang-drying to get the most bang for your buck.

“I’m in love with these pillow cases,” wrote one Amazon shopper in a 5-star review. “I purchased one for myself and another for my mom, and plan on purchasing a few more so that I always have clean ones to use while the dirty ones are being cleaned. The 7 Best Bed Sheets That Won’t Irritate Eczematic Skin, According to a Dermatologist https://www.wellandgood.com/best-sheets-for-eczema/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 17:00:03 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1018301 Yes, eczema freakin’ sucks, but if you can identify the culprits, preventative measures aren’t too far to fetch. By reducing stress, wearing skin-friendly sweaters, and/or applying fragrance-free skin-care products, you can likely bypass flareups and irritation. If  you’re struggling with itching and sensitivity all over your body, though, it can be easy to overlook this one thing: bedding.

“Rough bedding can irritate sensitive skin and particularly those with eczema,” says Leah Ansell, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and professor of dermatology at Columbia University Medical Center. “It can cause abrasions to already sensitive skin, which can allow inflammation or infections to occur.” The good news is, the best bedding for eczema can work wonders on compromised skin.

What to look for in the best bed sheets for eczema

Since eczematic skin can be easily irritated, Dr. Ansell says to avoid scratchy fabrics like wool, flannel, and linen. Instead, opt for softer and gentler fabrics like 100 percent cotton, silk, or sateen sheets, particularly ones with a higher thread count. “This usually indicates softer sheets” that can prevent abrasion or rubbing, she adds. How you take care of your bedding matters, too. Per Dr. Ansell, it’s important to give your sheets a regular wash using fragrance-free detergent to soften your sheets and prevent further irritation. Follow these steps, and you’ll be well on your way to itch-free territory.

We asked a dermatologist to share their hot tips and recommendations for choosing eczema-friendly bedding. Here are the best bed sheets for eczema you’ll want to add to your lineup.

Available in six colors, from forest green to sky blue, this set is all you need for a restful snooze.

PSA: A Bevy of Name-Brand Mattresses (Purple! Serta! Tempur-Pedic!) Are Up to 50% Off at Mattress Firm Right Now https://www.wellandgood.com/mattress-firm-presidents-day-sale/ Fri, 10 Feb 2023 19:30:07 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1017341 President’s Day is around the corner, which means two things: 1) many of us have work off on Monday, February 20 (yay, long weekend) and 2) mattresses everywhere are going to be on super-sale. For whatever reason, President’s Day is synonymous with mattress sales, sparking a bevy of in-store and online shopping-extravaganzas from legacy brands and smaller, DTC players alike. Is this what George Washington envisioned for his forever-birthday celebration? Hard to say. But we’re not complaining, especially when stores like Mattress Firm discount top-tier mattresses up to 50 percent off.

Yes, you read that right: The Mattress Firm President’s Day Sale (which is happening now, BTW) has a torrent of name-brand mattresses on sale for half-off the regular price. Brand’s like Serta, Tempur-Pedic, Purple, and Sealy are all up for grabs, with select models heavily discounted down from their normally luxury price tags. But it’s not just discounts—Mattress Firm is also throwing in a free adjustable bed base for select Queen- and King-sized models, like the Serta iSeries® Hybrid 1000 12″ Medium Mattress ($1400) and the Sealy Posturepedic® Summer Rose 14″ Plush Euro Pillow Top Mattress ($980), making the bedroom-makeover you’ve been dreaming of a reality. Just use the code ELEVATE at checkout.

And if you’re good on the mattress front, but need some new bedding or furniture, there’s plenty of that on sale, too. Select frames and foundations are all 20 percent off, as are pillows, linens, and mattress protectors. So pencil in “Shop the Mattress Firm President’s Day Sale” to your long-weekend plans (when you’re not shopping the other hundreds of holiday sales, of course). Scroll to find the deals George Washington himself would (probably) hate to see you snooze on.

In a Sex Rut? Couples Therapists Say New Bed Sheets Can Help Spice Things Up—Here Are the 11 You Want https://www.wellandgood.com/bed-sheets-for-sex/ Fri, 27 Jan 2023 23:00:04 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1010291 There are *lots* of things couples can do to “spice up” their sex-lives, from trying new positions and reversing roles, to bringing new vibrators, erotica, and even props into the mix. But there’s one big intimacy hack that couples are sleeping on (no pun intended) when it comes to setting the mood for sex in the bedroom—it’s your bed sheets.

Sounds silly, I know. But therapists say that refreshing your bed sheets can do the same for your sex drive, too. “Some people are more sensitive to tactile stimulation, these are the people who might also love cozy blankets and foot rubs,” explains couples therapist Genesis Games LMHC. “For people who find touch to be a source of relaxation, connection to their body, and eroticism, trying bed sheets with different fabrics and textures might positively impact their sex drive.” In other words, bed sheets might be just what you need to help get out of a sex rut, especially if you’re sensitive to touch.

How bed sheets impact sex drive

“A bedroom can be a couple’s haven for our expression of eroticism, intimacy, and pleasure,” says couples therapist Christina Eller LMHC. “An aesthetically pleasing boudoir can play a large role in how a couple can relate to each other especially when our environment speaks to our senses.” Eller explains that our brains instinctively absorb information about our surroundings via our senses (hearing, sight, smell, taste, and most importantly here—touch), and relay the findings to our brains, which in turn lets us know how to feel. “By design, if we dress up our bedrooms to appeal to our senses—particularly our sense of touch—a bedroom equipped with fresh, new soft luxe sheets can most certainly play a role in a couple’s arousal,” Eller tells us.

What to look for when shopping for sexy bed sheets

How do you know which bed sheets will inspire sexy time? If you can’t feel around and find out, go for lightweight options with a high thread count. “Having soft and temperature-controlled and breathable linens will help couples feel more relaxed while in bed,” says couples therapist Liana Cools LMHC. Cools recommends avoiding sheets that are too warm, like flannel sheets, in favor of crisp, cotton sheets with no less than a 300 thread count. To help narrow down your search, we scoured the web for the softest bed sheets that’ll get you in *the mood* in no time.

casper sheets
Casper, SuperSoft Sheet Set — $142.00

Available sizes: Twin – California King

The brand behind the original bed-in-a-box recently launched the SuperSoft Sheet Set, which delivers on its titular promise. Gina Vaynshteyn, our editorial commerce director has been testing them for about two months, and they’re so soft, luxurious, and snuggly (without leaving you sweating in the morning!), she bought two more sets so she’d always have a clean set ready to use. What impressed her the most, aside from the comfort, was that the elastic on the sides actually kept the sheets on, even though her mattress is really thick. Which, if you’re having a lot of sex, is a really big plus. There’s something about a fitted sheet popping off a corner of a mattress that’s just kind of a downer when you’re in the moment. Not with these sheets!

These are made with 100 percent brushed cotton (they somehow feel like flannel sheets the first time you use them—but truly lightweight). The set includes a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. You can also add on a duvet cover for extra.

Colors: 3

Plus, deep corner pockets and a secure elastic band in the fitted sheet mean you never have to worry about the corners popping off your mattress throughout the night (talk about a mood killer). This set includes one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and two pillowcases.

Colors: 5

This staple kit includes one fitted sheet, one flat sheet, and two pillowcases.

Latex Mattresses Are Especially Beneficial for People With Back Pain and Joint Issues—These Are the 9 Best Ones a Sleep Tech Recommends https://www.wellandgood.com/best-latex-mattresses/ Sat, 21 Jan 2023 16:00:39 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1003951 Every back, side, and stomach sleeper can relate to ache-y joints, back pain, sweaty back, and shoulder irritation. While temporary, these small discomforts can quickly convert your stellar snooze into a night of tossing and turning. Sure, pillows for back pain and lumbar support pillows can help, but if you’re experiencing continuous aches and pains, you’ll likely find yourself pointing fingers to your mattress—perhaps a latex mattress (we’ll get into this more in a second)—which should be changed every 10 years, per a sleep expert.

On your quest for a new bed, many experts recommend latex mattresses for better quality sleep. “The upper comfort layers are breathable and cooler” than traditional mattresses, and “the core of the mattress has high-density natural latex,” says Susan Miller, RPSGT, a sleep technician, making them a great option no matter what type of sleeper you are. What’s more, latex mattresses do not contain a single piece of foam, so they retain their shape and performance for many more years than the traditional mattress, says Lauren Baker, MA, CPT, ATC-Ret, a sleep specialist and Noom Coach.

The best latex mattresses, at a glance:

What to look for in a latex mattress

There are a plethora of options on the market, so we asked a certified sleep technician to break down what to look for in a latex mattress. For starters, “many brands use synthetic latex, which is cheaper and is not eco-friendly,” says Miller. Instead of synthetic materials, opt for natural Talalay latex, Miller recommends. It’s breathable, hypoallergenic, and offers a bouncy yet supportive feel.

When it comes to the “don’ts” of latex mattresses, you’ll want to consider breathability. Since latex mattresses have an open-cell structure—which render them more breathable—you can steer clear of mattresses with any marketed cooling capabilities. “All latex mattresses are cooler, so they don’t need any additional gel technology,” says Miller. “In fact, they score higher than any other bed in terms of cooling capabilities.” For back and stomach sleepers, Miller recommends choosing a slightly firmer latex mattress, whereas side sleepers should look for softer options.

To take the “back work” out of shopping, we chatted with a sleep technician to uncover the best of the best latex mattresses. Check out these nine options that’ll kick your back pain to the curb.

This 10-Foot-Wide Blanket Has Helped Me Achieve My Tall-Woman, Bedtime-Burrito Dreams https://www.wellandgood.com/big-blanket-co-throw-review/ Sun, 25 Dec 2022 20:00:47 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=995935 Finding a cozy blanket that can turn me into a human burrito is tough for a 6-foot-2-inch tall woman like myself. So many times, when I get a standard-sized blanket, I’m left choosing between whether or not I want my lower or upper half covered. And, even when a blanket claims to be made, “longer than average”, my toes are still left out in the cold for the imaginary monsters under my bed to catch. So, when I was sent the Original Stretch™ Blanket ($159) from Big Blanket Co., I was curious to see if it would be successful in transforming me into a true human burrito.

From the moment I opened the box I knew that this blanket would deliver on its BIG (size) promises. The throw is a sizable 10′-by-10′ square of heavenly plushness you’ll want to crawl under the moment you open it. If you’re bad at math, that’s a whopping 100-square-feet of material—larger than your standard king-sized comforter or duvet. At 11 pounds in weight,  it’s not technically a weighted blanket but it certainly has some heft to it making it a bit of a mini upper-body workout to lift the large throw out of its carrying case.

Big Blanket Co., Original Stretch™ Blanket — $159.00

Available in six core colors and four limited-edition hues.

Currently, the Original Stretch Blanket comes in six colors under the brand’s “favorites” category (polka dots, light grey, fuschia, royal, camel, and teal) and four limited-edition hues, including a retro-y orange half-moon pattern and a bright flamingo pink. The brand switches up its colors regularly, though. (I snagged a moody gray Smoke that’s not available on the site anymore.) To appropriately assess the true size of this blanket, I literally threw it onto my bed, slid underneath, wrapped one side under me, then the other side, before folding the bottom under my legs. And I must say, I was a burrito. A fuzzy, gray burrito, but still a burrito nonetheless.

This blanket snuggled all 6-foot-2-inches of me in coziness with plenty of room to spare. The fabric is so soft and a touch velvety on the side stitched without the brand’s “B” logo patch. Since it’s made with a 4-way stretch polyester, it’s particularly snuggly and buttery–the brand dubs it, “the yoga pants of blankets.” At 100-square-feet, it really is roomy, giving plenty of space for taller people like myself, and more. And if you’re worried about its weight, don’t be; The pressure of the 11 pounds is definitely felt, but less in a weighted-blanket type of way and more like a soft embrace.

What’s arguably the best part, though, is the fact that it fits in your standard-sized washing machine. Seriously—just as long as you don’t throw anything else in with it, it can be tossed into your washing machine at home. That means when you inevitably spill something on it or it gets drooled on during your nap (it happens), there’s no toting it to the laundromat or dry cleaner. Talk about a game-changer.

It’s safe to say that this big ol’ blanket has become a staple for snuggling on my couch, in my bed, and everywhere else I can fit underneath it. Do yourself a favor and get one too from Big Blanket Co. or Amazon—there’s other materials to shop if the poly-blend isn’t your thing. Now, if you excuse me, I’ll be living out my tall-girl, blanket-burrito dreams under this tremendous throw…

Premier Plush™ Blanket — $259.00

This plush blanket that’s as luxurious as it looks. It’s the same, ginormous size as the original, only made in a microfiber that’s softer than bunny ears. It’s pet-friendly, too, and its texture does wonders for hiding dirt, drool, and dog hair.

Available colors: 9

Premium Woven™ Blanket — $229.00

Looking for the perfect throw blanket for movie nights? Toss the Premium Woven blanket on your couch. The cozy knit is an elegant upgrade from the fleece and comes in a handful of stunning geometrics patterns that make it a statement piece.

Available colors: 7

Classic Knitted™ Blanket — $275.00

Or, splurge on this textured beauty that’ll have you snuggling in style. Its chunky, parallelogram pattern looks gorgeous draped over the foot of your bed or over your favorite chair. And it’s bound to keep you warm without getting stuffy or hot.

8 Luxurious Bed Sheets That Will Instantly Transform Your Bedroom Into a 5-Star Hotel https://www.wellandgood.com/luxurious-bed-sheets/ Sat, 12 Nov 2022 15:00:48 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=970805 Arguably, the best part of every luxury hotel stay is the bedding. Between the fluffed pillows, a sumptuous and heavy comforter, and clean, silky-smooth sheets, it’s a miracle we ever leave our hotel rooms at all when we stay in a really nice resort. The bedding is just so comfy, it’s tempting to want to pack it all up and keep it for ourselves. Of course, don’t actually do that.  Instead, recreate the rapturous feeling of waking up in a 5-star hotel from home with a set of equally luxurious, resort-worthy bed sheets.

So, what makes bed sheets hotel quality? Linens will differ between hotel brands, but most luxury bed sheets are made of cotton. Not only are these naturally super soft, they’re less likely to trigger allergic reactions or irritations for those with sensitive skin, making them a solid option for guests across the board.

Most dreamy hotel sheets also have a higher thread count, ranging between 200-500. That’s because sheets with a higher thread count last longer, age better, are softer, and are less likely to irritate skin, Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, previously told Well+Good.

That said, do yourself a favor and don’t stuff the hotel sheets into your suitcase. Book yourself a staycation with luxurious bed sheets that’ll transform your room into a 5-star resort, below.

The Softest, Coziest Flannel Sheets That Won’t Pill After a Few Washes https://www.wellandgood.com/best-flannel-sheets/ Wed, 09 Nov 2022 21:30:48 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=936097 With the colder months officially upon us, ‘tis the season to break out your coziest blankets—and if warmth is what you’re after, you’re going to want to go for flannel sheets as your bedding of choice. A time-trusted favorite for their toasty, buttery softness, there are few things more satisfying than snuggling up in that warm and fuzzy flannel feeling. But before we get into the best flannel sheets that you’ll want on your bed, indulge us in a quick flannel crash course.

What to look for when shopping for flannel sheets

It’s important to know that flannel can be made of multiple types of material, like wool, cotton, or synthetic fibers like polyester. Though they were traditionally made using wool, cotton flannel is now the most common, offering a softer, more breathable feel. ”For the overall best experience with flannel sheets, I would recommend 100 percent cotton options,” says Amelia Jerden, a certified sleep coach and sleep specialist for Sleepopolis.

Another key thing to consider when shopping for flannel sheets is the GSM—or the grams per square meter—unlike thread count which is more relevant for traditional cotton bed sheets. “GSM measures the weight, durability, and overall quality of the flannel,” says Jerden. “A GSM of 130-135 is considered lightweight and most breathable. A GSM of 140-150 is considered mid-weight and is best for year-round use. And a GSM of 160 or higher is heavyweight—best suited for very cold weather.”

Beyond the GSM, look for terms like “napping” or “brushing” to identify high quality flannel sheets. “Napping is a finishing technique in which woven fabric is brushed with metal to raise the fibers and create the fuzzy texture flannel is known for,” explains Jerden. Brushed flannel sheets are typically much softer than non-brushed varieties, and though they might shed a bit at first, it’s totally normal and usually stops after a few washes.

‘I’m a Physical Therapist, and These Are the 9 Best Mattress Toppers if You Have Hip Pain’ https://www.wellandgood.com/best-mattress-toppers-for-hip-pain/ Tue, 25 Oct 2022 23:00:46 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=927459 If you have hip pain, you’re probably aware that it can prevent you from sleeping soundly through the night. While the right mattress can help improve your Zzzs, springing for a new one isn’t always an option. Luckily, the best mattress toppers for hip pain can serve as a happy compromise, providing cushioned support while alleviating aches and pains.

The best mattress toppers for hip pain, at a glance

How does a mattress topper help alleviate hip pain?

“Mattress toppers can be beneficial for sleepers with hip pain, as they can provide an extra layer of cushion that can cause the pressure points in your hip less stress,” according to Heather Moore, PT, DPT, a doctor of physical therapy and the owner of Total Physical Therapy.

What to look for in a mattress topper for hip pain

When shopping for a mattress topper, comfort is paramount. “You want to find a mattress topper that is comfortable to you,” says Dr. Moore. Although comfort is subjective, she recommends avoiding down mattress toppers or ones stuffed with feathers—“These can be too soft and not offer the support that joints need.” Another tip from Dr. Moore: “Avoid words like ‘pillow’ and ‘cloud.’ ‘Cloud’ and ‘pillow’ mattress toppers are definitely the softest, but do not provide any support for your body, and therefore are often incorrectly chosen because they feel the best when you lay down, but the feeling will not last throughout the night.”

In other words: “You are looking for pressure-relieving mattress toppers that will provide your body with support,” says Dr. Moore. However, just as comfort is subjective, factors like pressure relief and support are highly personal—which is why it’s always best to try a mattress topper in person before committing to a purchase.

Should you choose to shop for one online, you might want to consider buying a mattress topper with a solid return policy. “You should definitely purchase one that you can try because if it is not comfortable, then you need to have the ability to return it,” says Dr. Moore. Whether you decide to shop in-person or online, here’s a round-up of some of the best mattress toppers for hip pain to narrow down your choices—all of which have been personally recommended by Dr. Moore.

The best mattress toppers for hip pain

Overall best

Made of memory foam and replete with a moisture-wicking organic cotton cover, this Saatva option is one of the best mattress toppers for hip pain.
Saatva, Graphite Mattress Topper — $345.00

“The Saatva Graphite Mattress Topper is one of the best,” says Dr. Moore. “It is pricey, but supportive and firm and made to wick heat and moisture away.” The three-inch topper is made with memory foam—and, according to one reviewer, it has “so much support and cushioning.” While many memory foam toppers have a reputation of trapping heat, this one has an organic cotton cover that keeps you cool and comfortable while you sleep. As a plus, Saatva also offers a 180-day return policy.

Best budget memory foam

Made with open-cell memory foam, ventAIR technology, bamboo charcoal, this Biopedic option is one of the best mattress toppers for hip pain.
Biopedic, Bamboo Charcoal Swirl Mattress Topper — $157.00

Like the overall best pick, this memory foam mattress topper comes with the recommendation of Dr. Moore, but it’ll set you back a fraction of the price. Open-cell memory foam, ventAIR technology, and bamboo charcoal work together to promote comfort, air flow, and odor-regulation. Reviewers have also attested it provides a supportive amount of cushioning for achy joints and limbs. “I have been working on sleep hygiene and pain management for a little over a year,” one reviewer wrote. “The foam topper is a must-have.” It’s available in two-, three-, and four-inch thicknesses and has a three-year limited warranty.

Best mid-range

Made with CertiPUR-US certified polyfoam and an open-cell foam design, this Molecule option is one of the best mattress toppers for hip pain.
Molecule, Triple Zone Pro Topper — $250.00

This mattress topper from Molecule has three layers of CertiPUR-US certified polyfoam—an often less-expensive alternative to memory foam—with an open-cell design that relieves unwanted pressure on sore spots. According to reviewers, the topper makes a welcome addition to mattresses that don’t offer optimal support.

“It made the bed very comfortable and provided the support I needed,” one reviewer confirmed, and another mentioned: “Perfect firmness. Not waking up all night from pain anymore!” In addition, the design helps regulate your body temperature while you sleep. Its cooling cover further adds to its breathability—and as a bonus, resists bacteria, mold, and unwanted odors. If you aren’t completely satisfied with your purchase, Molecule offers a 30-day window for returns, too.

Best breathable

Made with Bio-Pur foam, this Amerisleep option is one of the best mattress toppers for hip pain.
Amerisleep, Lift Memory Foam Mattress Topper — $299.00

If you tend to run hot while you sleep, Amerisleep’s mattress topper will ensure you stay comfortable through the night. It’s made from cushy Bio-Pur foam, which has an open-cell design and is said to be more breathable than traditional memory foam without sacrificing support. The topper not only offers three inches of targeted support for your trouble areas—it’s firmer around the head, back, and feet, and softer under the shoulders and hips—but it also helps regulate the body temperature.

Its lightweight cover offers extra breathability. The topper is available in two varieties—Comfort and Support— to suit your needs. Take it from one reviewer, who wrote: “I have a long history of chronic pain and insomnia. I no longer awaken due to pain in my hips, shoulders, neck, and arms. The Lift was the perfect addition to my AS5 Hybrid, to allow me to sleep soundly.” One trade-off: It doesn’t currently come with a return policy or a risk-free trial period—something to keep in mind as you shop.

Best for side sleepers

Made with memory foam and a cooling technology, this Tempur-Pedic option is one of the best mattress toppers for hip pain.
Tempur-Pedic, Tempur-Adapt + Cooling Topper — $335.00

According to Dr. Moore, “This offers pressure-relieving support for all side sleepers—and not just for your hip.” The Tempur-Adapt + Cooling Topper is made from soft yet supportive memory foam to relieve pressure where your body needs it most. “I have had a lot of pain on my left hip because I sleep on my left side,” one reviewer wrote. “I love this topper. The pain has virtually disappeared.” At three inches thick, it also adds noticeable plushness to your mattress while absorbing body heat, thanks to its cooling technology. In addition, Tempur offers a lengthy 90-day window for returns.

Best bamboo

Made with cooling bamboo, this Niagara Sleep Solution is one of the best mattress toppers for hip pain.
Niagara, Sleep Solution Bamboo Mattress Topper — $46.00

“I like bamboo mattress toppers because they are soft but not too soft, so they have some support,” according to Dr. Moore. What’s more? “They are able to keep you cooler, and therefore, more comfortable and will not cause you to overheat and move around a lot at night.” This bamboo mattress topper from Niagara Sleep Solution is one that Dr. Moore recommends—and reviewers have attested it offers the ideal amount of support for hip pain. “Very soft and comfortable. Don’t wake up with sore hips anymore!” raved one reviewer. To top it off, it’s less than $50 and has a 30-day window for returns.

Best gel

Made of memory foam and infused with temperature-regulating gel, this Viscosoft option is one of the best mattress toppers for hip pain.
Viscosoft, Memory Foam Mattress Topper — $200.00

The Viscosoft mattress topper is made with memory foam to cradle your body like a hug without aggravating painful pressure points for a restful night’s slumber. “I tried other toppers, but [they] didn’t give me the support I needed,” one reviewer wrote. “I’ve found sleeping on my right hip to be painful for many years, but pain has disappeared since I purchased the Viscosoft mattress topper.”

Plus, it’s infused with temperature-regulating gel to absorb and disperse body heat. It comes in two thicknesses: a 3-inch topper and a 4-inch version for those who want more support, as well as additional lavender or charcoal-infused options. The mattress topper’s cover provides added breathability and is machine washable. You can also try it out for 90 days to see if it’s suitable for you.

Best for targeted support

Design with Octaspring technology and three densities of foam, this Dormeo option is one of the best mattress protectors for hip pain.
Dormeo, Premium Mattress Topper — $379.00

The Dormeo mattress topper is designed with zoned support, with three different densities of foam to help with support and alignment. To note, there’s softer foam around the shoulders and legs and firmer support under your hips, waist, and lower back. Dormeo relies on Octaspring technology, which is essentially “foam springs” that are said to distribute your weight evenly and keep the spine aligned.

And reviewers have reported it really works to alleviate hip pain, among other physical aches. “I have never slept so well in my life! My shoulders and hips are pain-free now,” one reviewer mentioned. In combination with its hypoallergenic Smart Performance cover, it also helps regulate your body temperature. But don’t take reviewers’ word for it: Take it for a spin with Dormeo’s 100-day risk-free trial.

Best splurge

Made of cotton, wool, and latex, this Avocado option is one of the best mattress toppers for hip pain.
Avocado, Organic Plush Mattress Latex Topper — $649.00

If you’re willing to shell out more money for a mattress topper, this one from Avocado is well worth the price. It is designed with three layers: the topmost layer is made from cotton, followed by an organic wool layer that makes the topper nicely plush, and then a base of organic latex, which is springier than memory foam, but supportive nonetheless.

You can choose from two firmness options (Plush and Firm), but either way, reviewers love the way the topper feels. “Don’t be afraid to try this mattress. I ordered the topper separately so I could try it both ways [and] I like the added softness of the plush topper. My backache and hip pain is gone,” one reviewer wrote. You will also rest easy knowing that the topper is Greenguard Gold-certified, so it’s free of potentially harmful substances. Avocado also offers a 30-day trial period, so you can try it first before making a financial commitment.

Other ways to relieve hip pain

While a mattress or mattress topper is a worthy investment, it isn’t the only way to alleviate hip pain. “How you position yourself to sleep is very important and can affect your overall health,” according to Dr. Moore. She also recommends using a pillow to help minimize unwanted aches and pains. “Having a pillow between your knees can lead to a better body position and overall better sleep,” she says. “If you are more comfortable with sleeping on your back, you can put a pillow under your knees to help put your back and hips in better positions.”

18 Best Eco-Friendly Bedding Brands You Can Feel Extra Good Snuggling In https://www.wellandgood.com/eco-friendly-bedding/ Fri, 14 Oct 2022 20:18:44 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=281895 When Queen Elizabeth decided to give Buckingham Palace a plastic detox, I realized it might be time for me to get truly serious about doing the same. In the 12 months since, I’ve been working hard to eradicate plastic from my apartment, use only the cleanest of cleaning products so as to avoid releasing ever-more toxins into the air, and take other such measures to protect myself and the environment.

As I audited my sustainable-home situation, however, I realized I’m still spending eight hours a night in cheap cotton sheets manufactured with more chemicals than conscience. (Cotton is one of the world’s dirtiest crops!) To remedy the situation, I performed a deep dive into the best in eco-friendly bedding and found some truly innovative companies working hard to create cozy sheets, comforters, and more so that conscientious consumers can sleep soundly. Below are the best brands to keep in mind when shopping for sustainable, eco-friendly bedding and linens.

If You Prefer Sleeping on Your Stomach, These Mattresses Are the Perfect Match for You—According to a Mattress Expert https://www.wellandgood.com/best-mattresses-stomach-sleepers/ Sun, 08 May 2022 20:00:41 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=858309 Shopping for a new mattress can be overwhelming—so many choices! To help you narrow it down, and to maximize your comfort when you’re snoozing, it’s important to choose a mattress type that complements your sleeping style, whether you sleep on your side, back, or stomach. If you want to find the best mattresses for stomach sleepers, you should know what to look for before making a big purchase that you’ll be spending about a third of your day on.

If you sleep on your stomach, you don’t have to be too picky regarding mattress materials, so it shouldn’t be tough to find a good match. Many options can work well for your sleeping style, including memory foam, hybrids, latex, and pocketed coils, says Derek Hales, founder and editor-in-chief of NapLab, which tests and reviews mattresses, pillows, and other sleep products.

Which level of mattress firmness is best for stomach sleepers?

The ideal mattress for stomach sleepers has a medium firm to slightly firm feel (around 5–7 on the mattress scale of 1–10), says Hales. “The vast majority of all mattresses are available in this firmness range,” he adds. “As a result, stomach sleepers have a huge variety of mattresses to choose from.” (That’s both good news and bad news if you’re not good at making decisions—but don’t worry, we’ve got you.)

Choosing the right firmness “ensures the midsection doesn’t sink too deeply relative to the upper and lower body, thereby creating optimal stomach sleeper support,” Hales says. If you’re a stomach sleeper, a soft or very soft mattress is likely to cause pain in your lower back, shoulders, and neck.

Your body weight also factors into your ideal mattress, as Hales explains. Lighter weight people do best with a medium firmness (or even soft, for those under 120 pounds); medium to slightly firm is best for moderate weight people; and heavier folks benefit from the additional support of a slightly firm to moderately firm mattress.

Is it safe to order a mattress online?

First, a general tip regarding when it’s time to shop: The rule of thumb for a mattress’s lifespan is 8–10 years, but no matter its age, key signs that you should say goodbye to your mattress include waking up with sore muscles and joints or suffering from poor quality sleep.

While store employees are happy to let you test-drive mattress options, a few minutes of awkwardly lying down on a model you’re considering won’t tell you how you’ll feel after sleeping on it all night. But with online mattress shopping, many brands—especially direct-to-consumer companies—offer home trials of 100 to 365 days, giving you plenty of time to figure out if you’ve made the right choice.

Shopping online can make it easier to compare options, too. Instead of trying to remember various mattress specs while you follow a salesperson around, you can just click through your browser tabs to compare various features at home. Many mattress models have amassed hundreds or thousands of online customer reviews, and you can take all the time you want to read them while you relax on your own bed!

To help you feel more comfortable at night and more refreshed in the A.M., we asked Hales to share his picks for the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

The best mattresses for stomach sleepers

Saatva Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm Mattress, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
Saatva Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm Mattress — $1,899.00

Here’s a notable recommendation from Hales, who’s primarily a stomach sleeper himself—he has one of these in his own bedroom, in fact. He says he appreciates its medium firmness, ample pressure relief (thanks to its Euro-style pillow topper), and zonal support, meaning the middle of the mattress is more supportive. “In the case of stomach sleepers, the extra support in the middle of the mattress combined with a medium feel creates the right dynamic to create a neutral spinal alignment,” he says.

Other notable features of the Loom & Leaf mattress include gel-infused foam, designed to keep you cool and provide lower back support; a hypoallergenic, antimicrobal, organic-cotton cover; non-toxic flame barrier, and CertiPUR-US certified foams (free of ozone depleters, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, etc.).

Customers receive a 180-night trial, free in-room delivery and setup, free removal of your current mattress and foundation, and a 15-year warranty.

winkbeds luxury firm mattress, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
WinkBed Luxury Firm Mattress — $1,499.00

Hales points to the Euro-style pillow topper, thick comfort layer, and zonal support as important features of this mattress from WinkBeds, which he recommends as a great choice for stomach sleepers, as well as combination sleepers, who may lie on their stomach, side and/or back during the night. Hales notes that the Luxury Firm version is a good bet for most stomach sleepers, while heavier folks might prefer the Firm for more support.

This mattress is a high-scorer at Hales’ website, NapLab, as he explains, “Among all of the mattresses we’ve tested to date, it has the second-best score for sex (9.9 out of 10), best edge support (just 2.25 inches of sinkage), and excellent cooling (tied for first with a handful of other models).”

WinkBeds highlights this mattress for people who sleep hot and those who suffer from back, hip, and shoulder pain. It’s handmade to order in the U.S. and includes free shipping and returns, a 120-night risk-free trial, and a full-replacement lifetime warranty.

essentia organic mattress, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
Essentia Classic 8 Organic Mattress — $3,382.00

This is a splurge-y mattress for sure, but it meets high standards for mattress safety and sustainability. The Classic 8 is non-toxic, eco-friendly, organic, allergy-friendly, and vegan. It’s made with “the world’s only natural memory foam” at the company’s GOLS- and GOTS-certified organic factory in Canada. (The GOTS textile standard denotes organic materials that meet ecological and social criteria along the supply chain, while the GOLS organic latex standard requires certain materials and processing criteria).

This mattress provides pressure relief and posture support while keeping you cool and enabling you to “experience motion isolation of not feeling another person move in the bed,” which is super helpful if your partner tosses and turns at night. (Fun fact: One of the mattress’s layers is Kevlar—yes, the same material that’s in bulletproof vests.)

Essentia offers free shipping, a 120-night home trial, and a 20-year warranty. Reviewers call this mattress “perfect,” “best mattress ever,” and “worth every penny.”

birch natural mattress, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
Birch Natural Mattress — $1,399.00

Birch focuses on eco-friendly, non-toxic mattresses, and this Greenguard Gold Certified and GOTS Certified model is made with hypoallergenic and organic materials and is sustainably sourced. It’s safe from VOC off-gassing and is free of polyurethane foams, fire retardants, formaldehyde, and pesticides.

The mattress, which is made in the U.S., is medium firm, which places it at a 6–7 on the firmness scale—shifting to a 4–5 when combined with the plush organic mattress topper, sold separately ($450). Birch offers a 100-night sleep trial, free shipping, and an impressive 25-year warranty.

Here’s a very promising 5-star review (backed up by tech, even!): “Absolutely fantastic! I have been tracking my sleep for close to 5 years, and within the first two weeks I had multiple ‘100% sleep quality’ nights in my Birch mattress. Great sleep is worth every penny.”

AmeriSleep as3, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
Amerisleep AS3 Mattress — $1,399.00

Hales recommends the AS3 from Amerisleep—the company’s top-selling mattress—as a budget-friendly memory foam option with “exceptionally good” performance. He highlighted its pressure relief, contour, and “memory foam hug.” Amerisleep’s Bio-Pur foam (the company’s alternative to traditional memory foam) is CertiPUR-US certified, low in VOCs, made without harsh chemicals, and resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew. In addition, the mattress is made in the U.S.

While Hales says the AS3’s medium firmness is a good fit for most stomach sleepers, he points out that Amerisleep also offers softer (AS1) and firmer (AS5) versions, as well as a hybrid (AS3 Hybrid), which he suggests for folks who want to “prioritize a mattress with better sex performance and/or … need a mattress with better cooling.”

Amerisleep offers a 100-night trial, free shipping and returns, and a 20-year warranty.

bear elite hybrid, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress — $1,478.00

Hales had this to say about this non-toxic mattress, one of his favorites: “It shares many similarities with the WinkBed, so it checks many of the same boxes for me. Low motion transfer, fast response time, hybrid design for better cooling, and good sex performance (9.8 out of 10).” The mattress’s design helps relieve muscle tension and provides lumbar support, and each zone has its own pressure point relief (including hip and shoulder support).

This non-toxic, eco-friendly mattress is Greenguard Gold Certified, is made with CertiPUR-US certified foams, and has a fiberglass-free fire barrier. Bear provides a 120-night risk-free trial, free shipping and returns, and a lifetime warranty.

Reviewers call it “the best mattress we have ever purchased,” “the best bed I have ever slept on,” and “worth every penny.”

owl natural latex hybrid, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
Nest Bedding Owl Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress — $1,440.00

Hales recommends this mattress because “[t]he pillow-top design creates plenty of pressure relief, while the pocketed coil base and latex comfort layer ensures the mattress breathes well and sleeps cool.” He says that heavier stomach sleepers may find the Firm version the best option, while lighter weight and moderate weight folks should be happy with the Medium. Bonus: If your and your partner’s preferences don’t match, you can pick a different firmness for each side with the king and California king sizes.

The mattress’s eco-friendly features include organic cotton, 100 percent natural OEKO-TEX latex, CertiPUR-US certified foams, high-quality Joma wool from New Zealand, and a hydrogenated silica fire barrier that’s free of harmful chemicals. The foams and latex are given time to air out in the factory, which significantly reduces residual off-gassing once your mattress is delivered.

Nest Bedding’s mattresses are made in the U.S. and offer a 365-night home trial(!!!), a free lifetime renewal exchange, and a lifetime warranty.

leesa original mattress, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
Leesa Original Mattress — $999.00

This memory foam mattress, made in the U.S. with CertiPUR-US certified foams and a hypoallergenic cover, helps you keep cool at night, limits motion transfer, and relieves pressure on your back, hip, and shoulders. And while it’s not quite a buy-one-get-one program like the ones some companies provide (after all, mattresses are a lot pricier than shoes or socks), Leesa donates one mattress to a family in need for every 10 they sell. (The company is a certified B Corp, too.) You’ll get something free yourself: two down-free-alternative pillows with a mattress purchase.

Leesa offers free delivery, a 100-night trial, and a 10-year warranty.

This mattress has earned an overall 4.5-star rating from 20,278(!!!) reviews; customers call it “the perfect mattress,” “the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on,” and “the best mattress ever.”

helix dusk mattress, best mattresses for stomach sleepers
Helix Dusk Mattress — $1,099.00

Helix offers two similar models: this Dusk Mattress and the Dusk Luxe Mattress ($2,049). This more affordable version is designed for stomach sleepers and back sleepers by providing contouring to enable proper spinal alignment, and has a breathable cover to keep you cool. The mattress, which is made in the U.S., is free of harmful chemicals, and the foam is CertiPUR-US Certified. Helix gives customers free shipping, a 100-night trial, and a 10-year warranty.

The Dusk Luxe has the same general features but adds some extras. It offers two choices for cooling covers and features zoned lumbar support and targeted ergonomic support, plus 5 years added to the warranty.

Reviewers have given this mattress an overall 4.6-star rating, and one of the many happy customers wrote, “This bed has completely changed the way I sleep. I got the Helix Dusk for its mix of support and softness. … It’s impossible to get up in the morning it’s so comfortable. I’m finally rested and don’t wake up with neck and back pain anymore. It’s amazing!”

Beyond mattress choices, Hales shared two more tips for stomach sleepers, regarding pillow options and body positioning. He explains that very thin pillows are best for stomach sleepers, as bigger ones can interfere with proper alignment of your neck with your body. “Even if you have a mattress that works well for sleeping on your stomach, the [wrong choice of] pillow could cause problems,” he says.

Another of Hales’s tips for those who sleep on their stomachs: It’s best to lie with your feet off the edge of the mattress. (But childhood fears die hard, right?) “[This] helps create the neutral alignment that all sleepers need to avoid pressure point build up during the night,” he says.

The Best Affordable Bedding Sets That Look and Feel Way More Expensive Than They Are https://www.wellandgood.com/cheap-bedding-sets/ Wed, 23 Mar 2022 21:30:01 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=390857 It’s laundry day and you can’t make your bed until your sheets are washed and dried—which, for the record, experts say should be once a week (if you’re wondering how often sheets should be cleanedduvet covers can be washed every two weeks) because of the bacteria and dirt that they accumulate.

Without an extra bedding set, it can be difficult to add this bi-weekly task to an already-overwhelming to-do list. At least that’s the case for me, which is why I thought to search for cheap bedding sets in the first place. Switching my sheets without having to wash the dirty ones immediately was a real game-changer—both for my mental health and my wallet.

Whether it means scoring a pair of black leggings at half price, getting a two-for-one deal on platform sneakers, or finding dupes for luxury items like Birkenstocks and Bottega Veneta boots, our staff is always in hot pursuit of optimizing free time and a bargain brag. And, thanks to the cheap bedding sets I found on the internet, I’m currently the reigning queen of the bargain hunters. (Crown me!)

The affordable bedding sets below each have something a little different to offer. They might have only (or more than) two pillow shams, or come with (or without) fitted and top sheets. One thing remains the same, though: They’re all less than $60.

The best cheap bedding sets that are all less than $60

Uozzi Bedding 3-Piece Blue-Gray Duvet Cover Set — $25.00

The three pieces you get with this bedding set? Two pillow shams and a reversible duvet. You might not get much with this bedding set—after all, it is missing a fitted sheet as well as a top sheet—but it’s still worth the purchase.

In addition to the geometrically chic design, this set is machine-washable, is made from breathable microfibers, and has a zipper so you don’t have to worry about buttons coming undone when you’re catching zzzs. (Side note: this set is only available in three sizes: twin, queen, and king.)

Chelsea Park Frasier 5-Piece Comforter Set — $40.00

This bedding set features the comforter, two matching pillow shams, and two decorative pillows—which are embroidered with the cross pattern to match the comforter. It’s not advertised as reversible, but the comforter’s flip side doesn’t have the embroidery, so you could reverse it. The comforter is made of 100 percent polyester (and is also filled with it), which means it’s a more lightweight option.

Amazon Basics Bed in a Bag — $51.00

There are more than 20 pattern options to choose from with Amazon’s bed in a bag. Regardless of which you choose, you’ll get a comforter, two 20-inch-by-26-inch pillow shams, two 20-inch-by-30-inch pillow cases, a flat sheet, and a fitted sheet.

Even though it’s polyester microfiber that’s meant to feel cozy, the coolest thing about this set is that the fitted sheets have pockets sown onto them. Those could come in real handy if you’re lacking space on your nightstand.

Dastan Microfiber Bedspread Set — $41.00

This set doesn’t come with sheets, fitted or otherwise, but it’s still a good option. It offers you a lightweight, 100 percent polyester bedding set (a quilt and two pillow shams, for king and queen sizes) and is textured for an aesthetically pleasing addition to any room. It’s also machine washable, so you don’t have to worry about making a trip to the dry cleaner’s.

Amazon Basics Ultra-Soft Micromink Sherpa Comforter Bed Set — $45.00

Coming in hot with availability in more than 20 colors, we have an Amazon Basics set that more than 50,000 people have rated 4.5 out of 5 stars. Perhaps that’s because it’s made of soft materials, like micromink polyester and faux fleece. Or maybe it’s because it’s made in a factory that “ensures textiles meet high safety and standards,” so you can feel extra good about this purchase when you hit the hay. Even though they might not look it, the comforter and shams are both machine washable for added convenience.

Comfort Spaces Bed in a Bag — $39.00

When you purchase this nine-piece bedding set, you get: one comforter, two standard shams, one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, and four pillow cases (!!!). Aside from honoring its moniker, Comfort Spaces’ Bed in A Bag is made of 100 percent microfiber, which makes it light, and is machine washable. If you don’t like the darker option, there’re also blue, coral, and light purple options.

CJ&J Comforter Set — $47.00

This set is interesting because the comforter “can be used as a duvet insert or be treated as a stand-alone comforter,” and I, for one, love functionality. As a three-piece set, it only comes with the comforter and two pillow shams, but it’s soft and lightweight because it’s made with 100 percent microfiber and has 300 GSM filling, which provides year round coziness (because it’s not too heavy or too light).

Jellymoni Cotton 3-Piece Striped Duvet — $42.00

Unlike its polyester and microfiber counterparts on this list, the Jellymoni set is made out of 100 percent cotton. Though the only pattern available is striped, you can get it in more than a dozen colors. The cotton set comes with a duvet cover (which has corner ties so your insert doesn’t come out of place) as well as two pillow cases.

Sweet Home 7-Piece Bed in a Bag — $54.00

This bed-in-a-bag option comes with a matching comforter, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and four pillow cases. It’s made of double-brushed microfiber—which means the material is brushed on both sides instead of one, making it soft to the touch. The fitted sheets are also a perk, since they have deep pockets designed to fit mattresses up to 16 inches tall.

Threadmill Home Linen Certified 100% Egyptian Cotton Sheets — $60.00

Because so many of the options here don’t come with sheets and have only two pillow cases, both of which experts say you should also be frequently washing, it felt right to include at least one option to consider. This set is great because it’s made of authentic Egyptian cotton, so you can get a night of luxurious sleep on a 400-thread-count fitted sheet, flat sheet, and two pillow cases.

Perhaps one day, I’ll be able to do the “adult” thing and invest in a few nice sets of high-quality sheets. For now though, I’m perfectly content to enjoy the cards I’ve been dealt. I’ve promptly ordered a few of these cheap bedding sets. Now, please excuse me—microfiber calls. It’s time for a low-priced, high-quality nap.
