Though you might feel as though you couldn't possibly get enough time cozying up in bed, chances are, your bedding is one of the most-touched items in your home. Just consider the hours you spend each night swaddled in your sheets and duvet or comforter, bringing all that fabric into close contact with the skin on your body and face.

For that reason, you might rest a little easier knowing that all the materials you're snuggling up with are certifiably free from any potentially irritating chemicals—and that's where the best organic bedding comes into play.

What qualifies as organic bedding?

As with organic personal-care products and organic foods, organic bedding has to meet particular standards of cleanliness at every stage of the farming and manufacturing process in order to receive the "organic" designation. In the textile world, that typically refers to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification, for which a product must contain at least 70 percent organic fibers, says certified sleep coach Logan Foley, managing editor at SleepFoundation.org.

"You might wonder why it's not 100 percent, but if you think about all the types of products that can earn this certification, you'll see that some of them are near-impossible to make completely organically—as with mattress covers, for example, which are required by law to be treated with a chemical that makes them fire-resistant," she says.

In the case of the best organic bedding, though, most of the GOTS-certified organic brands far exceed the 70-percent requirement, hitting 100 percent or getting quite close to it. While this organic designation does not necessarily speak to the eco-friendliness of these products, which is a separate distinction, it's worth noting that organic-farming methods do eliminate the use of pesticides and fertilizers, which can otherwise pollute groundwater, and tend to utilize less water, too.

On the flip side, while you might spot sustainable or "natural" bedding made with bamboo or eucalyptus, the viscose process used to transform these raw materials, extract their cellulose, and spin it into fine fabric strands involves certain chemicals not needed to process fabrics like cotton and linen. As a result, while these options are typically eco-friendly, they aren't technically organic, from start to finish. (Even so, you may still feel comfortable buying them, particularly if they sport the OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certification, which signifies that each component of the final product—though, not the manufacturing process—has been tested for potentially harmful chemicals, according to Foley.)

"When shopping for organic sheets, for example, you should still evaluate the same qualities as you would for a non-organic option." —Logan Foley, certified sleep coach

With this in mind, folks who are prone to irritation or have any skin sensitivities are likely best off with GOTS-certified organic bedding, says Foley. But, that designation alone also does not necessarily speak to the bedding's quality. "When shopping for organic sheets, for example, you should still evaluate the same qualities as you would for a non-organic option," she says. "That includes weave and knit type (say, sateen versus percale), staple (which refers to the length of the cotton fibers, with extra-long typically being the softest), and thread count."

While there's no right answer for everyone—many of these qualities are subjective to personal preference—the best organic bedding options take all of these components carefully into account. Below, find our favorite GOTS-certified organic bedding sets, and rest assured, you'll be in for a dreamy and totally skin-friendly snooze.

Coyuchi Organic Crinkled Percale™ Minimalist Set — $304.00

Ever feel like bedding is just a little too crisp straight out of the box? Well, it’s time to meet your new match: This organic-cotton duvet set from Coyuchi is slightly rumpled by design for that already-broken-in feel. And as an extra bonus, the fabric will naturally camouflage any additional crinkles or wrinkles from use. The duvet cover, fitted sheet, and pillowcases each come in either nine or 10 colors, which you can mix and match to create your ideal set.

Parachute Organic Textured Duvet Cover Set — $299.00

Part of Parachute’s first and newly launched organic-cotton collection, this textured duvet set features the brand’s signature basketweave look and feel. It comes in two soft colors—a dark gray called Reed and an off-white Natural—both of which get their muted tones from a garment-dying process and pre-wash. The result is effortlessly breathable, layer-able, and versatile.

Nest Bedding Organic Cotton Luxury Bed Set — $99.00

A 300-thread count makes these sheets smooth to the touch, and thoughtful design makes them even easier to use: The elastic along the full edge of the fitted sheet was made to grip a mattress super-snugly, and the pillowcases sport internal sleeves to keep pillows from sliding out. The sheets set includes the top sheet, fitted sheet, and pillowcases, and comes in white, pewter, terracotta, and slate.

Pottery Barn 400-Thread-Count Organic Percale Sheet Set — $119.00

Hotel-bed lovers, take note: These are the light, crisp, and ultra-smooth sheets of your best vacation. You can wrap yourself up in this 400-thread count percale and drift off without a single concern about waking up sweaty (we’ve all been there). The set includes a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases available in five colors, and you can even get the flat sheet or pillowcases monogrammed (for an additional charge).

Avocado Organic Superfine Suvin Cotton Sheets — $249.00

You might know Avocado for the company’s famously “green” mattress. But if you didn’t know it makes bedding, too, now’s a great time to get acquainted. These organic sheets have the additional qualification of being made with Indian Suvin Cotton, which is a rare, extra-long-staple variety. (As a refresher, that’s cotton talk for incredibly fine and soft.) In turn, these sheets sport a whopping 1,000 thread count and a shiny sateen finish—which is all to say organic and luxury can certainly coexist.

Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Duvet Set — $308.00

Hot sleepers who still like to cuddle up with a duvet will vibe with this Boll & Branch duvet set, which is made with the brand’s signature cloud-light weave. It comes in six neutral matte shades with just enough sheen to stand alone or play nicely with a quilt or throw. Ties on each interior corner of the duvet cover will also help keep your insert from bunching up within it.

Sol Organics Classic Organic Bedding Bundle — $199.00

Built on the foundation of a transparent supply chain, Sol Organics is committed to affordability and access—which is why its bedding is about half the price of the industry standard, if you compare King-size, 300-thread-count sheets. And it’s all made with long-staple organic cotton for smoothness and durability.
