So before Olaplex came around, I was lifting my hair, very high, and it used to break off like the needles of an old Christmas tree,” she says. “I would disguise it with a lot of product because I loved that bleach-blonde look, but it was hard because my hair didn’t feel the way it used to.”

All of that changed, though, when Olaplex came around. The brand, which launched in 2014, is known for its revolutionary reparative formulas that can restore the health of even the most damaged strands. “It was remarkable,” says Frank. “Suddenly my hair felt stronger… It felt like my virgin hair. It felt healthy so immediately, I started incorporating it into everything.”

After seeing the results that Olaplex could deliver, she joined the team as lead stylist and educator. In the latest episode of Well+Good’s Routine Rundown, she’s giving us a first-hand look at the game-changing science behind the brand and then some.

Listen to the full episode here:

To understand what makes Olaplex Olaplex, it’s first important to understand the science behind how it works. When an external factor damages your hair, it causes a chemical reaction that breaks up the disulfide bonds that make up the structure of your hair and “eats up” all of the proteins that keep your strands healthy. “Damage doesn’t just happen from getting your hair colored or lightened,” says Frank, explaining that cumulative damage can also come from hot tools (yes, even the most hair-friendly blow dryer) and the environment.

“And you would think that the simple solution is to go ahead and fix this by putting some protein in the hair, but the truth is, it’s a chain reaction—you need to take care of the source of the problem, which is the broken disulfide bonds. The rest of it you can take care of after.”

This, she says, is where Olaplex comes in. “When you’re using Olaplex regularly… you’re mitigating that damage so that the reaction never happens, and you don’t have something eating away at your hair—you’re basically making your hair strong,” says Frank. “This is the first thing you do to make sure you’re [supporting] the structure, so then you can do all of the other things you need to do to make sure you have healthy, strong, beautiful hair.” In other words: It’s not a Band-Aid solution that will cover up damage so your hair looks healthy—it’s actually doing the work to fix it.

Because damage can come from so many different factors, Frank feels strongly that everyone could benefit from having Olaplex in their routines. “It’s this unique, patented chemistry… and I think that every single person should have this as a tool in their arsenal, because this happens to everybody,” she says.

Olaplex, No. 3 Hair Repair Perfector—$30-$60

“Olaplex No. 3 should be in every single person’s arsenal, period,” says Frank of the brand’s original formula. Though Olaplex’s reparative tech is present in all of its products, this pre-shampoo treatment packs the biggest punch. Frank recommends adding it to your routine once or twice a week, which is exactly what she does herself.

“I’ll do this 10-15 minutes before I take a shower. Dampen my hair real fast, put in the number 3 and make sure it hits every strand, leave it in for 10 minutes and then shampoo and condition,” she says. You can leave it on for longer, but just make sure it doesn’t dry completely (otherwise, you’ll be left with crunch and grease) and always wash it out thoroughly.

Olaplex, No. 0 Intensive Bond Building Hair Treatment — $30.00

“If you have seriously damaged hair, I definitely recommend also adding in the number zero, which kind of boosts the efficacy of [the reparative technology],” says Frank. Use it as a primer before applying Olaplex No. 3 to intensify its benefits.

Olaplex, Daily Cleanse and Condition Duo — $30.00

“I’m a big fan of our shampoo and conditioner, which, like all of our products have the patented ingredient our chemists made,” say Frank. “They’re phenomenol, especially for people who do a lot of things that can drain out the moisture in their hair, like flat ironing or lightening their strands.”

Olaplex No. 8 Bond Intense Moisture Hair Mask — $30.00

“What’s phenomenol about this is that it is so lightweight, and it absorbs into your hair… you’re getting it all into your hair, and your hair needs that,” says Frank, noting that a little bit of product goes a long way. “It says [to leave it on for] 10 minutes, which is optimal, but I’ll admit I might wash my hair when I first get into the shower, then put that on and do everything else, and I rinse it out after whatever amount of time that takes and get great results.”

Olaplex, No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme — $30.00

“We all have that skin-care product that’s the first thing we put on… that is this product. You put this on wet hair as the first product, no other product before, and you need so little—one pump should take care of your whole head,” says Frank. “It’s a serum, so of course it has our active ingredient, but it also has these antioxidants that are basically going to protect your hair from free radicals as well as help to get them out so that you won’t have continuing damage—it’s protecting your hair for up to 48 hours.”

But protection isn’t the only thing this formula offers. “It has this memory, so when you’re blowdrying your hair with it you’re creating a base hairstyle that’s going to last you for days,” says Frank. “If you have curly hair, it makes the curls more manageable and more forming, and it’s anti-tangle… and anti-static.”

Olaplex, No. 9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum — $30.00

Before any sort of heat styling, Frank will also layer on Olaplex No. 9 for extra protection (Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Hair Oil is also a great option for those with coarser, drier textures). It’s got a triple-action formula to strengthen, protect, and smooth. It does this with the help of Olaplex’s bond-building tech, plus red algae extract with bonds to hair to defend against damage from hot tools, pollutants, and UVA and UVB rays.

Olaplex, No.4P Blonde Enhancer™ Toning Purple Shampoo — $30.00

“Toners in blonde hair will oxidize over time, so really my hair has more of a yellowish undertone at this point even though I tend to be on the cool side,” says Frank. “So I do use Olaplex No. 4, which is our purple, blonde-enhancing shampoo. And that really does help give me the longevity of [my color] and doesn’t make me look like I have brassy hair.”

Because purple sits opposite of yellow on the color wheel, it will help neutralize any brassiness in your hair, which is why stylists recommend purple shampoo to keep blonde highlights looking fresh. Though there are many great purple products on the market, this one comes with Olaplex’s bond-building tech, which means it will keep your hair healthy and looking great.

Olaplex, No. 4C Bond Maintenance™ Clarifying Shampoo — $30.00

“On the day of my [color] appointment, I have to clarify my hair, so I’m definitely going to be using the Olaplex 4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo because I don’t want anything to interfere with the [professional] product working the way it should.,” says Frank. “I’d recommend that to anyone getting any sort of color service, any bleaching, et cetera, because your hair sucks up everything. So you want to get all of that out so that the products [your stylist] is using on you are working in the most efficient way and the color they choose is working the way it should.”

This $7 Drugstore Tonic Leaves My Fine, Mature Hair Shiny, Soft, and Voluminous https://www.wellandgood.com/tresseme-pro-infusion-review/ Fri, 28 Apr 2023 23:00:48 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1055499 I admit I have a thing for coconut. Not only do I adore the way it smells, I love the smoothing and softening benefits of using coconut oil products (or just the oil itself) in the shower and on my skin and nails. The one notable exception has always been coconut oil hair products. Though I love what I’ve seen them do for others—the glossiness, smoothness, and shine–I’ve always been afraid the oil will leave my fine, straight hair looking like I haven’t washed it for days.

So, when samples of the new Pro Infusion by Tresemmé collection promising to make the benefits of coconut oil accessible to all hair types arrived at my door, I figured I’d give them a try. The hero ingredient of the line’s shampoos, conditioners, and hair tonics ($7 each) is the trademarked Coco-Proteinize complex containing activated natural coconut oil for moisture, balance, and shine, and hydrolyzed wheat protein for strength.

About the Tresemmé Pro Infusion collection

The line has four formulas with ingredients that target the needs of specific hair types–Fluid Smooth with niacinamide for strength and sheen, Fluid Curls with hyaluronic acid for hydration, Fluid Color with strengthening vitamin E, and Fluid Volume with biotin for fullness.

I decided to try the Volume formula and see if it could bring shine and fluidity to my strands without making them look flat and lifeless. Jessica Grigoriou, head of beauty marketing and salon & masstige hair portfolio director at Unilever, parent company of Tresemmé, says the secret to getting coconut oil to work on fine hair is in the formulation.

“We combine several ingredients in the formula using just the right balance of them to ensure that the Volume shampoo, conditioner, and hair tonic help achieve the fluid hair benefits that the Pro Infusion range offers—shine, smooth and natural movement— to everyone without weighing it down, and leaving hair voluminous,” says Grigoriou. “While the activated coconut oil plays a large role in the shiny, smooth movement you’ll get with these products, it won’t weigh your hair down because of this balance of ingredients within the formula.”

The entire collection contains 0% sulfates, silicones, parabens, and dyes, with 99.5% biodegradable formulas packaged in 70% PCR bottles, and is PETA-approved.

What happened when I tried it

I find clear shampoos work best on my hair and was happy to see the shampoo was clear and lightweight. The products have natural scents such as florals, cedarwood, and cinnamon, so they smell great. Because I usually avoid using sprays beyond the roots of my hair, I was a little wary of using the spritz-on tonic, which is best applied from roots to ends. But Grigoriou advised that the lightweight post-wash conditioning the tonic offers was a must for achieving the results I wanted.

“The tonics are formulated to be the foundation for fluid style, so we highly recommend using them before styling your hair to enhance your natural movement and shine,” she says.

After spraying the Tresemmé Pro Infusion tonic on thoroughly, I loved the way it detangled my below-the-shoulder hair and made it easy to comb. The true test was how my hair would look after it dried, and honestly, once it did, I was pretty amazed with the results. My hair was downright shiny, full, and soft, without a hint of oiliness. I loved the glossy sheen my hair took on. Overall, the results were better than I expected and the hair tonic I was so afraid to try turned out to be the standout product in the lineup.

I’m really looking forward to using the products once the drying summer sun hits, and am happy that despite my doubts, I gave them a try–and now my hair doesn’t have to miss out on the coconut love.

Shoppers With Thin Hair Say This Spray Makes It Look Like *Twice* as Thick—Luckily, It’s on Sale Right Now https://www.wellandgood.com/sephora-spring-sale-oribe/ Fri, 14 Apr 2023 21:00:36 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1049705 If you’re seeing more scalp than you’d like, it’s possible that your hair is thinning out. Sometimes mistaken for hair shedding, hair thinning occurs when strands get thinner over time, and can be a result of a myriad of factors, including but not limited to genetics, stress, and autoimmune hair diseases.

Some of these factors are beyond our control, but what we can control is how we care for our follicles. In addition to hair thinning shampoos and conditioners, thickening sprays can work wonders, and there’s one spray that Sephora shoppers with thin hair are adding to their carts: Oribe Maximista Hair Thickening Spray, which is being discounted up to 20 percent off thanks to the Sephora Savings Event.

sephora spring sale
Oribe, Maximista Hair Thickening Spray

Originally $39, now $31 for Rouge, $33 for VIB, and $35 for Insiders.

How the Sephora Savings Event works

  • The event runs from April 14 (today) until April 24
  • Rouge members take 20 percent off starting April 14
  • VIB members take 15 percent off starting April 18
  • Insider members take 10 percent off starting April 18
  • The price of products depends on your membership status, which you can check by clicking on your Sephora account

Why Sephora shoppers love it? The spray is formulated with thickening copolymers—which thicken hair and give you the va va voom you need to style, volumize, and hold curls. In addition to thickening agents, this spray doubles as heat protectant; it’s enriched with amino acids to strengthen hair follicles and prevent breakage as a result of weak hairs or heat tools. You can also count on oils like argan, avocado, and rosehip fruit to revive lifeless hair. Straight, wavy, or curly hair—this spray works on most hair types.

“I have fine hair, but recently went through some significant hair loss,” says one Sephora customer. “This spray makes it look like I have twice the hair that I do! Doesn’t feel crunchy or dry either.” Another said: “I have fine hair and have for my whole life,” says one Sephora customer. “There is no other product like this! And I’ve been looking my entire life. Without being heavy or even noticeable, this product adds thickness to my hair I’ve only dreamed about.”

As shoppers have said: “Run don’t walk” to grab this hair thickening spray. It’s only on sale for a limited time for Rouge (now $31), VIB (now $33), and Insider members (now $35). Thicker hair, here we come!

This Luxe New Oil Control Shampoo Is My Secret Weapon for Keeping My Fine Hair Grease-Free in Warm Temps https://www.wellandgood.com/oribe-serene-scalp-oil-control/ Tue, 11 Apr 2023 20:00:17 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1047509 As much as I love my hair—and as much of a defining trait as it has become for me over the years—it’s not exactly easy to care for. My fine strands are particularly prone to looking oily and weighed down within 24 hours of washing, but as a color-treated redhead, I have to be careful about how much I wash my hair because it’s the pigment known for fading the fastest. So, like I said, it’s a bit of a feat caring for this mane of mine.

Thankfully, dry shampoo exists. With it by my side, I’ve trained my hair to be washed every third day, effectively prolonging the lifespan of my color treatments. Still, I’m always on the lookout for new and improved products and practices that can make caring for my finicky strands just a bit easier. Needless to say, when I caught wind of the new Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control launch, I was all ears.

The collection consists of three products: the Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Shampoo ($52), Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Treatment Mist ($72), and Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Dry Shampoo Powder ($46). Where the shampoo and treatment mist are designed to be used during and directly after washing, the dry shampoo powder is meant for a next-day refresh.

Benefits of the Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Collection

While oil-control shampoos and dry shampoo powder aren’t exactly revolutionary, I was intrigued by Oribe’s new triple-threat collection for a few reasons. For starters, I’ve never tried an Oribe product that I didn’t enjoy the look or scent of. So from the get-go, at the very least, I knew that this trio, which is housed in lilac packaging, would smell heavenly and add a chic element to my shower and vanity.

Scent and looks aside, the ingredients within these formulas stood out. All three of the products feature the Oribe Signature Complex (comprised of Watermelon, Lychee and Edelweiss Flower, which work together to fight off oxidative stress and prevent color fade, as well as the overall deterioration of strands) at the helm. The Shampoo and Treatment Mist are infused with a Biome Balancing Complex (made of rosebay extract and green marine algae) to “regulate and rebalance the scalp’s microbiome to reduce excess sebum and oil.” The dry shampoo powder also features rosebay extract (but not the Biome Balancing Complex as a whole). It’s also packed with a specialty blend of rice, corn, and tapioca starches to adequately absorb excess oil at the roots, as well as down the strands.

Another thing that caught my eye? The consumer study the brand conducted on the Shampoo and Treatment Mist, specifically. After surveying 101 women, they found that after one application of the shampoo and mist regimen, 91 percent felt their scalp was less oily for 72 hours after use, while 90 percent felt their hair was cleaner at the roots after just one use. Meanwhile, after using the shampoo and mist regimen at least three times in 10 days, they found that 90 percent saw a noticeable reduction of oiliness in hair and scalp. Okay, sold.

My honest opinion

After testing out Oribe’s new trio for the past couple of weeks, I have some thoughts. The Shampoo works well to fully cleanse my hair and make it smell fabulous, while the Treatment Mist gives it a refreshing scent and feel. (While the product label doesn’t mention rosemary or spearmint, those are the whiffs that I get—and it reminds me of my late grandpa’s aftershave growing up, so I’m wholeheartedly a fan.) Something I’ve noticed about the Treatment Mist, though, is that, if I don’t blow-dry my hair after spritzing it and massaging it into my scalp and strands (which is what it says to do), once dry, my roots already look a bit built-up with product—they have that slightly oily sheen. That said, if I blow-dry my roots post-spritz, my hair literally looks professionally blown out. I’m interested in seeing if the results change the longer I use it.

Now: The mane event. The product that absolutely wows me from this collection is the Dry Shampoo Powder—which honestly surprised me. I’m not typically a fan of dry shampoo powder because 1) it’s harder to apply with precision than its spray-on counterparts, 2) it often leaves a white cast, and 3) it tends to have a powdery scent. While the Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Dry Shampoo Powder is a bit tricky to apply (it comes in an aluminum tube with a screw-on top, beneath which is a tiny hole that, when shaken, disperses product), once it soaks into strands, the results are truly jaw-dropping. My hair looks fully refreshed, not to mention infused with volume and imparted with a feathery-soft sheen. Oh, and did I mention it smells incredible?

Pro Tip: The trick with this dry shampoo powder is to let it sit on your strands for two to three minutes before brushing it through from roots to ends. I tried doing so both immediately and after waiting the recommended period of time, and can attest to the difference it makes to exercise a little patience.

Suffice to say, Oribe’s new trio has earned a steady spot in my hair-care lineup. I’d love to see the dry shampoo powder packaging transitioned to a spritzer squeeze bottle (like the Verb Dry Shampoo Powder) but considering the truly stellar results, I’ll make do with a few stray shakes (and I’ll be sure to apply it before putting on anything dark or black, because it definitely showed up on my royal purple sweatshirt when I tested it the first time).

Stylists Are Begging You To Swap Heavy Hair Creams and Butters for These Lightweight Moisturizing Sprays for Spring https://www.wellandgood.com/lightweight-moisturizing-hair-sprays/ Mon, 10 Apr 2023 23:00:12 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1046141 When spring comes around, we trade our rich creams for lighter lotions to tailor our skin-care routines to the warmer temps. So why not do the same for your hair? Considering heavy lotions and butters weigh down the hair and prevent much-needed hydration from penetrating the strands, stylists say swapping in lightweight sprays and oils can make a world of difference once the real sweaty seasons set in.

“In summer and spring, heavy butters and oils on your hair will basically dry it out more, because they’re creating a thick barrier on the hair that prevents moisture from sinking in,” says Mika English, a hairstylist at The Ursula Stephen Salon in Brooklyn. In the winter (when there’s less humidity in the air), this barrier can be helpful for sealing in moisture and keeping dry air out, but in the warmer months, it’s overkill. And when it’s really hot (looking at you, July in New York City),”heat and oil together will fry your hair,” says English.

Additionally, those thicker products don’t hydrate and moisturize your strands. “They aid with styling and getting through the week, but to really get inside the cuticle, you need water and conditioner,” says English, which means a regular wash with a good, moisturizing conditioner is tantamount. Even if you have dry hair and can get away with washing less frequently, derms say not to go more than 10 days without a wash and condition.

“A lot of people feel like extra moisturizers and oils are essential, but if you just wash your hair more frequently, you’ll feel your hair adjust to the water,” says English. “When a plant is dry, we water it. It’s the same concept with hair.”

Once you have your hair washed and conditioned, English recommends lightweight moisturizing hair sprays to keep your hair conditioned throughout the week. “I always prefer liquid or oil products over creamy-based or butter-based products,” she says. “Creams and butters tend to lay on top of the hair, whereas liquid goes inside [the strand] and makes the hair easier to manage.”

To keep your hair optimally moisturized this spring and summer, shop English’s favorite lightweight moisturizing hair sprays and oils below. “They’re all really lightweight, but they fix the problem rather than just lay on top,” she says. Consider us sold.

Post-COVID Hair Loss Is a Real Thing. Here’s How To Deal With It https://www.wellandgood.com/post-covid-hair-loss/ Wed, 15 Mar 2023 14:00:27 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1032019 You’re noticing your shower drain is clogged. You’re shedding like crazy all over your sweaters. And, while most people besides your hairdresser can’t tell on sight, your thick hair isn’t quite as luscious as it used to be. You might be wondering if you’re washing it too much, if you need to get to a doctor to run some labs, or if the stress of worrying about it is making it worse.

If you’ve had COVID in the last few months, though, you might be losing your hair as a post-COVID reaction.

Who does post-COVID hair loss affect?

While one study said that 22 percent of people who were hospitalized with COVID developed post-COVID hair loss, the number of people affected overall is likely much higher than that since it can also affect people who had cases that didn’t require hospitalization. Nisha S. Desai, MD, dermatologist, and Kerianne McKeon, PA-C, physician assistant, from Northwest Dermatology Institute in Portland, Oregon (one of the few hair loss referral centers in the United States), wrote over email that they are seeing post-COVID hair loss frequently.

“Some studies show that it can affect approximately 20 to 67 percent of people who have had COVID-19,” they shared. Potentially, more than half of everyone who has had COVID has lost hair afterward.

And you don’t have to have had severe COVID to have this reaction after recovery. However, the specialists say, “the severity of COVID-19 can be directly correlated with the severity of the hair loss. For example, a patient who was hospitalized for COVID-19 is more likely to have a greater degree of hair loss than someone who has had mild symptoms.”

When is hair loss a sign of something more?

Throughout the course of a day, we typically lose 50 to 100 strands of hair. Losing more than that for one to three months after having COVID indicates post-COVID hair loss. You might lose just over the daily norm, or up to a thousand strands in a day.

“Patients should not worry unless the total duration of the shedding is lasting more than six months, or if the hair loss is occurring in irregularly shaped patches,” say Desai and McKeon. In that case, it’s worth getting checked out by your regular healthcare provider or making an appointment with a dermatologist, since there are other conditions that lead to hair loss, including alopecia, thyroid disorders, or male or female pattern baldness.

Timeline of hair loss: What to expect

At Northwest Dermatology, the researchers and specialists have observed two patterns in post-COVID hair loss. Classic telogen effluvium, or hair loss due to stress, is the most common pattern they see after COVID-19 (as well as other viral infections). The stress of the illness causes some hair follicles to convert from a growing phase to a shedding phase. The specialists say they see patients begin losing hair eight to 12 weeks after the infection—which sometimes makes it hard to connect the dots if you had COVID several months ago.

The less common pattern they’ve observed is called dystrophic anagen effluvium, which is characterized by hair loss that starts sooner than eight weeks after their illness. The specialists think the cause of this version of hair loss is caused by “direct attack of the hair follicles by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.” With this type, some people also have scalp pain.

Fortunately, either way, this reaction is not a lifelong sentence. “Post-COVID hair loss is common, temporary, and reversible (the hair will grow back)! Most cases resolve on their own without any additional treatment,” say Desai and McKeon. It can be scary to throw away bigger-than-usual balls of hair, but the people who have experienced this already have seen full recovery of their previous hair thickness.

The specialists say the shedding can last three to six months, and most people see their hair regain its normal fullness within six to 12 months after the shedding resolves.

Ways to help your hair grow back

If you’re eager to get your locks back, there are several hair loss solutions and products on the market. You can also treat your hair gently, avoiding over styling or heating.

However, our experts say, “There are no treatments that can prevent or alter the ultimate course of the hair loss. Hair will often begin to grow back on its own as early as one month after the loss began,” but it can take a full year to get back to its complete fullness. They say topical or oral minoxidil or platelet rich plasma (PRP) may speed up the regrowth process, but it is often not necessary since “most patients will not require interventions to slow down post-COVID loss.”

When to follow up with your doctor

It’s possible, though uncommon, that your post-COVID hair loss can stick around past the one-year mark. “There are some occasions when telogen effluvium may unmask another hair loss condition such as female or male pattern hair loss,” say Desai and McKeon. More than likely, however, extended hair loss is due to a treatable health problem like an iron or vitamin D deficiency, or abnormalities in your thyroid function.

With long COVID in the news, you might be concerned that hair loss is indicating that you’re a “long hauler,” and that you will be feeling other symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, or muscle pain. Fortunately, hair loss is not a sign that you have long COVID. It’s one, isolated, unpleasant but temporary post-COVID effect that will, in all likelihood, be over soon.

I Get Nervous About Hair Oils Because I Have Fine Hair—But This $12 Bottle Transformed My Strands https://www.wellandgood.com/odele-hair-oil/ Thu, 09 Mar 2023 22:00:46 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1025639 While they sound great in theory, I’ve always been wary about trying new hair oils. My fine and fickle hair can go from fresh and bouncy to greasy and lifeless if I so much as look at it the wrong way—so hair oils are a hair care gamble I’m not super inclined to take. But when Odele, the chic and affordable hair-care brand you’ve likely seen at Target, launched a hair oil last month that claimed to suit all hair types….I obviously had to roll the dice and try it out.

The Hair Oil ($12) promises to nourish and repair thirsty strands, while taming frizz and sealing split ends for that coveted, fresh-from-the-salon shine and softness. And it claims to do all this while feeling lightweight enough for all hair types. Sounds like a tall order, I know. But the thing is, it actually works. Read on for why the Odele Hair Oil is now a forever staple in my hair-care routine.

Odele, The Hair Oil — $12.00

With its light—but nourishing—oil blend, the Odele Hair Oil promises to nourish and repair thirsty strands, while taming frizz and sealing split ends for that coveted, fresh-from-the-salon shine and softness. And it delivers on all of the above, for only $12 bucks.

The high-end packaging (and scent to match)

First thing’s first, the Hair Oil looks like pure luxury—the weighty glass bottle (that’s equipped with a pump for added convenience) and modern, minimalist design speaks to my little aesthete heart, and is even more impressive given the affordable, $12 price tag. It’s scented with Odele’s signature, gender-neutral fragrance, Marine, which touts notes of fresh cucumbers, earthy oakmoss, and sweet ylang ylang, but really can best be described as “fancy.” It’s 100-percent plant-derived, too—Odele lists all the oils and extracts it contains on its website, and honestly, I’m here for the transparency (and we’ll get into the smoothing ingredients in one second!).

The silky blend of light and nourishing ingredients

Odele describes its Hair Oil as “concentrated but lightweight,” which sounds like an oxymoron at first but actually makes total sense once you use it. It contains argan oil, a holy grail hair-care ingredient that delivers rich nourishment and shine to dry, frizzy hair.

Its other star ingredient, camellia oil (aka, tea seed oil or tsubaki oil), is a dry oil—which means it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a heavy, slick feeling behind. Beyond its featherlight feel, camellia oil is a natural source of antioxidants that boost hair health, and is rich in fatty acids that help repair dry, damaged hair, and enhance its ability to maintain moisture. The Hair Oil also features baobab oil, another dry oil derived from the seeds of baobab trees—which, in addition to strengthening strands and combating frizz, “work[s] to increase hydration of the strands and moisturize the scalp,” Dominic Burg PhD, trichologist and chief scientist at Evolis Professional, previously told Well+Good. It’s this dreamy combo of lightweight and intensely nourishing oils that gives the Hair Oil its silky soft feel.

The experience and results

One to two pumps is all I need (on damp hair) to achieve a hydrated and de-frizzed air-dry that still keeps its natural volume. And I can run my fingers through my strands with zero traces of greasiness. Depending on how I feel (and how much time I have), I’ll also use a pump on dry hair after I blow-dry it and add some flat-iron waves, to replenish any moisture lost while heat-styling and give my hair some shine. I’m consistently delighted by the results.

My frizz and flyaways? Tamed. Dullness? Never heard of her. Dry ends? They’re hydrated and thriving. The Hair Oil’s smooth, light as air texture is soaked up in a flash, and I can see the difference in the shine and overall vibrance of my hair every time. And the best part is, I never have to worry about it undoing all of my styling efforts with that heavy, greasy feeling I’ve experienced with hair oils in the past.

Take a gander at the reviews, and it’s clear that Odele shoppers are equally in love. “Love this product,” writes one customer in a 5-star review. “I’ve used other oils and this one is super lightweight and hydrates but doesn’t make my hair oily. I have thin, fine hair and it works wonders.” Another shopper with medium-thick hair says she loves it, too. “I put it in wet hair after a shower at night and it leaves me with nicely separated beachy waves,” she says in a 5-star review. “I also applied [it on] wet hair before a blow dry and flat iron and it kept the style longer, with no flyaways at the roots. Not greasy or oily. This will be replacing my old hair oil.”

So, before you shell out the big bucks on a new bougie hair oil, know that you can find one that’s just as fancy and twice (dare I say thrice?) as effective—for a fraction of the price—in the Odele Hair Oil. Find yours on the Odele website.

A Swipe of This ‘Lip Gloss for Hair’ Instantly Makes Strands Silky-Smooth and Mirror-Finish Shiny https://www.wellandgood.com/balayage-exceptionnel-mela-kera/ Tue, 07 Mar 2023 01:00:16 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1028923 Smooth, shiny hair is having a moment. An emphasis on “glass hair” has permeated the industry of late, and with that has come a proliferation of products that promise a glossier mane. There’s lamellar water, which sleek-ifies your strands before you even step out of the shower, and styling serums that promise “glass hair in a bottle” every time you blow dry, but now, we’ve got an on-the-go option: lip gloss for hair.

Yes, you read that right, and it’s somehow even cooler than it sounds. Luxury haircare brand Mela & Kera created a finishing cream, called Balayage Exceptionnel Smooth Ends ($36) that acts like the glossy coat atop your silky strands—much like a lip gloss would sit atop your pout. And just like all the best glosses, it adds immediate shine without weight or grease and leaves a healthy, luminous, lightweight finish.

The formula was designed to breathe new life into hair that’s been highlighted or balayaged (hence its name), and can help enhance the appearance of any sort of dry or processed hair. Whether you concentrate it on your ends or apply it a bit farther up the hair shaft is up to you, but the end result is soft and radiant.

Not only will this stuff make your strads look immediately shinier, but it also works from the inside out to offer some long-term hair health benefits. Green caviar and vegan protein penetrate deep into the strand to enhance hydration and strength, while Ricinus plant (aka castor oil) zips up split ends and rose of jericho seals in moisture. As the brand puts it, you can use the “gloss” to “hydrate, polish, and treat dry ends and stubborn frizz” with little more than a single swipe. What’s more, the product also provides protection against heat damage and color fading, making it the perfect addition to any styling routine.

At $36 a tube, this is some niche luxury—and also the exact price of a Chanel lip gloss. After trying this myself, I can say that not only does the ‘exceptionnel’ cream live up to its claims, but it also smells heavenly (it reminds me quite a bit of the sultry-fresh florals in Oribe’s Côte d’Azur scent). But don’t just take my word for it, because plenty of five-star reviewers agree that this stuff is good. “Smells amazing and after using these products for about a month, I noticed my hair felt thicker and healthier. I can’t stop touching it! Highly recommend,” writes one. “Really love the feel and the volume this gives my hair!!!” says another.

So if you’re looking for the finishing touch to polish off your strands, look no further. Lip gloss for hair is here.

Lamellar Water Will Make Even the Driest, Most Brittle Strands Silky-Smooth, and All the Best Products Are Hiding at the Drugstore https://www.wellandgood.com/lamellar-water/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 19:30:12 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1025245 Over the last few years, one ingredient has seemed to infiltrate the hair styling community more than any other. It’s shown up on red carpets, TikTok feeds, and drugstore shelves, and it’s the secret to popular trends like “liquid hair”—yet its name remains elusive to most. So, what is this mysterious powerhouse ingredient whose products have bred such obsession, you ask? Lamellar water.

Although it may sound buzzy and new, lamellar water has actually been around for nearly four years. The rinse-out repairing and conditioning hair treatment was first introduced by Kérastase as an in-salon treatment called K Water, and it was patented by parent company L’Oréal Paris (meaning its technology can only appear in products made by L’Oréal’s brands). It promised to repair hair fibers and offer hair a glassy finish, making it an instant favorite among hairstylists and salon-goers alike.

More recently, however, lamellar water has been re-established as an at-home treatment, making it both more affordable and more accessible, so more users can experience its beloved effects. While it’s still considered relatively new, more and more products containing the hero ingredient are coming to market, each catering to different hair concerns and needs. Finding these products, let alone identifying which are best for you, can be a bit of a challenge, though, so we consulted the experts. Read on for everything you need to know about using lamellar water and where to find it (hint: it could be your local drugstore!).

What are the benefits of using lamellar water?

Lamellar water is known amongst hair stylists and experts are the secret to achieving the popular “liquid hair” look, but in addition to its aesthetic abilities, the ingredient can seriously enhance the health of hair. The water-based agent boasts the same ingredients as a traditional conditioning treatment but delivers them in a  gel structure that enables a lightweight texture.

“Lamellar water is so lightweight that it makes it easier to penetrate the hair cuticle, addressing damage to the hair on a deeper level,” explains Jonathan Colombini, a celebrity hairstylist and colorist for L’Oréal Paris. “It also allows the hair to maintain its natural volume and shape without the weigh-down caused by some traditional reparative masks or conditioners.”

How does it work?

Lamellar water typically comes in the form of a rinse-out hair treatment, though it can be left in for styling purposes. The lightweight ingredient is used to target and repair damage in hair, and deposits concentrated actives, like proteins and amino acids, to specific regions. But unlike other conditioning treatments, lamellar water has a gel structure, so it won’t leave behind a heavy, weighed-down feeling or any kind of moisture cast.

“Lamellar water can be incorporated easily into any hair routine,” says Krupa Koestline, a cosmetic chemist and founder of KKT Consultant. “It’s best to apply after cleansing, usually with shampoo, and then followed with a conditioner if necessary.” Like other conditioning treatments, lamellar water should be applied from the mid-lengths down, avoiding the scalp and focusing on the ends. Wait a few seconds, and then rinse out and proceed with the rest of your shower routine. Those with dry hair texture can use it alongside their standard conditioner, but Koestline notes that certain hair textures, including oil-prone, may want to forgo conditioner after the treatment.

What hair types does lamellar water work best on?

Lamellar water is one of those rare ingredients that really does work well on all hair types. “It’s great because it really is a lightweight treatment, so even thinner or more oily hair types can use it without worrying about the weigh-down of typical moisturizing treatments,” Colombini explains. That said, those with dry or brittle hair or significant hair damage will benefit most from using it.

Hairstylists Explain *Exactly* How To Use Olaplex on Curly Hair To Reduce Damage and Breakage https://www.wellandgood.com/olaplex-for-curly-hair/ Thu, 26 Jan 2023 23:00:07 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1011981 Olaplex is considered one of the holy-grail products in the hair-care world, especially for those with damaged strands. Whether that’s from too much heat exposure, excessive styling, harsh shampoo, or towel drying, it’s easy for hair to become damaged and lose its strength and integrity. This is particularly common among those with naturally curly hair, as it tends to be more fragile, which means strengthening treatments like Olaplex are vital to maintaining happy and healthy strands.

“Olaplex products have their exclusive bond-building technology which repairs damaged disulfide bonds [within the hair follicle],” says Bianca Hiller, celebrity colorist and Olaplex ambassador. “Curly hair types have more hair bonds so it’s essential to use a bond-building product like Olaplex.”

With that in mind, keep on reading to find out more about how to use Olaplex on curly hair, according to stylists.

Which Olaplex works best for curly hair?

Hair damage occurs when the structural protein bonds within a hair follicle are broken. Olaplex works by using a proprietary technology that rebuilds these bonds while also helping to protect strands from future damage by defending against external stressors.

While Olaplex can benefit those with curly hair (and any type of hair) by fortifying hair bonds on a molecular level, you’ll want to make sure you’re using the right products for your hair type and concerns. The brand has a wide selection of strengthening and conditioning products to choose from, however, there are a few that work best for curly hair.

Hiller recommends using the Olaplex No. 0 Intensive Bond Building Treatment (a primer that offers the highest concentration of the patented bond-building technology available for at-home use) and No. 3 Hair Perfector (a pre-shampoo treatment that strengthens and repairs the hair) once or twice a week. They are designed to be used one after the other.

And if you aren’t sure if your hair falls into the “curly” category, “Ask a salon professional if Olaplex is for you and which part of the system,” says Leigh Hardges, stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago. “I’ve seen adverse results when not using the right product for your hair issues.”

How to use Olaplex on curly hair

1. Apply primer

Olaplex No. 0 is designed to be applied to dry hair, so it should be the first step in your hair-repair routine (ideally before you even step into the shower). Section your hair, use the product to saturate strands from mid-lengths to ends. Leave on for 10 minutes.

2. Rinse

Rinsing your hair will not only wash away the primer, but it will also help prep your hair for the next part of the process. “For curly hair, I often prefer to apply products while the hair is still damp so it absorbs better to nourish and hydrate curls,” says Hiller. When your hair is wet, it’s in a better position to allow products to penetrate more deeply, but you want to make sure it isn’t so wet that the products are slipping and sliding down the strands. Somewhere between “damp” and “sopping” should be just right.

2. Apply treatment

While your hair is damp, liberally distribute Olaplex No. 3 from roots to ends. “When applying Olaplex to curly hair, it’s important to use a wide-tooth comb to evenly distribute the treatment through the curls to ensure that all areas of the hair are covered,” says Ivy Camacho, hair stylist at Angelo David Salon in New York City. Keep in mind that the porosity of your hair will determine how much product you need, so it may take a few tries to figure out the right amount to use. Leave on for 10 minutes (or longer) for best results.

3. Rinse again

You’ll want to give your hair a thorough second rinse before moving on to the final step of the process.

5. Shampoo and condition as normal

Because these Olaplex treatment products aren’t your typical shampoo and conditioner (though, FWIW, the brand makes those too!), you’ll still want to wash your hair as you usually would. Look for moisturizing ingredients, like avocado oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil, which will deliver hydration to help fend off some of the dryness and brittleness curly hair is prone to. You can shop a few of our favorites here.

7 Peppermint-Infused Scalp Serums To Boost Hair Health and Encourage Growth https://www.wellandgood.com/stimulate-scalp-peppermint/ Wed, 18 Jan 2023 03:47:57 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1003909 Your hair needs oxygen and nutrients to thrive—both of which are delivered via blood flow to your scalp. With that in mind, it makes sense that there’s a direct correlation between your circulatory system and the health of your hair: the better your circulation is, the more efficiently these essentials are distributed to your follicles, which can encourage hair growth and improve the overall appearance of your strands.

There are a number of different things you do to keep things flowing properly, like treating yourself to some red light therapy or scalp massages, but slathering on a peppermint-infused serum might just be the most satisfying option of them all.

Why stimulate your scalp with peppermint?

You’ll often see minty ingredients on labels under different names, like peppermint oil, mentha piperita, or menthol. Regardless of how it’s listed, know that menthol—which is derived from peppermint oil, so will likely be present in any peppermint products even if they don’t explicitly say it—is really the star of the show. It’s responsible for the tingly, cooling sensation you get when you apply something mint to your skin, but also comes with some pretty legitimate hair-health benefits

According to a 2016 study, topical application of a product that has at least 4 percent menthol in it “causes blood vessels to widen, which increases blood flow” and can potentially lead to thicker hair (though more research is needed to confirm this assertion), and another 2014 study saw promising results related to peppermint oil and hair growth.

Beyond the positive effects that peppermint oil can have on your blood flow, it can also help fend off dryness and flaking on your scalp, reduce excess oiliness, and fight inflammation.

Shop peppermint serums

Convinced to try one for yourself? Browse these seven refreshing serums and balms so you, too, can stimulate your scalp with peppermint oil. Each and every one is packaged with either a pointed nozzle or dropper tool (which are great for applying between braids and under sew-ins and wigs) so you can get the goodness right to your scalp without wasting a single drop.

Canviiy ScalpBliss Itch-Calming Organic-Based Serum — $20.00

The minty sensation that ScalpBliss leaves behind on your scalp is otherworldly. It’s made with a blend of aloe, lavender, witch hazel, manuka honey, and—of course—peppermint oil. It was designed to moisturize dry scalps while soothing itch and irritation.

Act+Acre Cold Processed Scalp Renew — $48.00

This pre-shampoo product was made to gently exfoliate and refresh the scalp, giving you a head start on your wash-day routine. While peppermint extract and red clover relieve and soothe irritation, salicylic acid and papaya extract exfoliate, dissolve, and digest dry skin cells on the scalp’s surface.

Mizani Scalp Care Soothing Scalp Lotion — $24.00

Edwards loves this calming scalp serum from Mizani, a brand that works with. It blends menthol with eucalyptus for that tingly effect while aloe vera soothes and avocado oil moisturizes.

The Nue Co Supa_Thick — $45.00

This pre-shampoo serum is designed to reduce hair shedding by stimulating the scalp with a blend of peppermint, clary sage, and rosemary oils while Ayurvedic extracts amla, bhringraj, and brahmi support hair growth and scalp health. Plus, the formula gently exfoliates and rebalances the scalp microbiome. Massage it into the scalp, leave it on for 20 minutes, and then shampoo and follow the rest of your routine.

Bread Beauty Supply Cooling Greens Exfoliating Scalp Treatment — $28.00

Designed as either an overnight pre-wash treatment or a leave-on, the serum uses menthol and eucalyptus to stimulate and soothe the scalp. It also employs a super gentle mandelic acid and gluconolactone to exfoliate the scalp and chinaberry extract to neutralize free radicals that can cause oxidative stress.

Pattern Scalp Serum — $25.00

Invigorate your scalp with this serum that uses peppermint and rosemary oils to stimulate and cool the scalp while glycerin, aloe leaf juice, and castor seed oil provide deep moisturization. It also includes antioxidant-rich matcha, vitamin B5, and niacinamide to strengthen the scalp.

SH-RD Intensive Full & Thick Hair Essence — $60.00

Peppermint oil and menthol cool the scalp and stimulate blood flow while Capixyl and Capilectine, two bioengineered ingredients, promote hair growth and reduce inflammation. The formula also includes red clover extract to stimulate hair growth at a cellular level while inhibiting the over-creation of DHT, a hormone that’s a main instigator of hair loss.

I Used a Hydrating Scalp Serum (Almost) Every Night for a Month, and It Left My Dry, Itchy Scalp Totally Flake-Free https://www.wellandgood.com/actacre-stem-cell-scalp-serum/ Mon, 09 Jan 2023 00:00:24 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1001791 I only get dandruff in the winter. It’s caused by a combination of dry air and my co-dependent relationship with my flat iron. The dandruff is always worse in the areas where I apply the most heat (around my part and my edges), but exists all around my scalp. The only way to get rid of the flakes and start fresh is to wash my hair, but I don’t always have the time or energy for that. So I’ve been keen to find a way to keep my scalp hydrated in between wash days.

During a consultation with Helen Reavey, celebrity stylist, trichologist, and founder of scalp- and hair-care brand Act+Acre, I learned that my dry scalp was doing more than causing a bit of itching and flaking.

“The cold weather can strip the natural oils from the scalp, affecting hair growth and increasing the chance of thinning and fallout,” she says. “Keeping the scalp hydrated and moisturized will ensure that the scalp microbiome is balanced, leading to a healthy environment for growth and hair health.”

She shared that I could seriously benefit from the brand’s Stem Cell Serum ($86), which does a whole lot more than hydrate.

“Our Stem Cell Serum harnesses the power of plant cell culture technology, utilizing Swiss apple stem cells which are clinically proven to promote and extend the hair’s natural growth phase, while soothing and hydrating the scalp,” says Reavey. “The stem cells are paired with aloe vera and bamboo and pea extract, which work together to reduce the production of free radicals responsible for the premature aging of hair follicles.”

Act+Acre makes this with its patented cold-processed method, “which uses ice-cold water, pressure, and a hyperbaric chamber to retain an optimum level of nutrients throughout the formulation,” says Reavey. “By going through this method, ingredients like apple Stem Cells are able to maintain their highest nutrient potency levels, ensuring that consumers have what they need for healthy scalp and hair.”

So I set out to make the serum a part of my daily routine for a month.

What it’s like using the Act+Acre Stem Cell Scalp Serum

I very much despise taking care of my hair. I find the process tedious, and if I can muster the strength to wrap my hair up before bed it’s a major win—so I wasn’t positive I’d be able to stick with regular serum use. But the fact that it comes in a pretty glass bottle that I wanted to keep front and center on my vanity helped, as it made it feel more like a part of my skin-care routine than my hair-care routine (which makes sense, considering your scalp is skin). I found myself reaching for this serum as the natural next step in my routine after my facial regimen was complete.

Most of my hair is braided down to accommodate my U-part wig. I placed the serum between my cornrows, throughout my leave-out, and around my edges, which I also leave out of the braids. And on days when I was feeling really motivated, I’d finish off by putting the Bread Beauty Supply Hair Oil Everyday Gloss ($18 to $24) on my strands (not my scalp!) to seal in the hydration.

At first, I was worried that the serum consistency would eff up my silk press, but I found the added hydration wasn’t an issue since I was wrapping my hair right after applying the serum. So even if it was a little wet, it would dry flat and sleek. As someone with dry skin, I was used to my scalp being perpetually itchy in the winter to the point that I’d ignore it. This serum helped so much—I’ve found myself instinctually reaching for it to soothe my parched and itchy scalp. It turned out to be a must-have when was home in Buffalo, NY over Christmas when a wild blizzard came through and made the air so incredibly dry.

My nighttime hair routine remains imperfect, and I did not use this every night like I wanted to. But honestly, I’ve still noticed a major difference in the hydration of my hair and the way my scalp feels. I can’t wait to go to my next hair appointment and have my stylist tell me how much my hydration has improved. Because I know for a fact that my strands are softer and stronger than they usually ever are in the winter. It’s earned a place in my forever rotation.

Professional Stylists Say These 7 Air-Dry Products Are the Secret to Healthier Hair https://www.wellandgood.com/air-dry-products-healthier-hair/ Sun, 08 Jan 2023 18:00:39 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=994993 Despite countless hours and many, many failed attempts, I’ve never been able to successfully heat-style my hair at home. I’ve tried curling wands, flat-iron waves, and those blow-dry brushes that are supposed to simplify the process for newbies like me–but air-drying my hair will always be the easiest (and healthiest) solution.

Besides saving me precious time while getting ready in the morning (a low-maintenance gal’s dream), air drying spares my strands from unnecessary heat damage. “Repetitive use of hot tools can damage and break the hair severely—especially chemically treated hair—and can also eliminate the hair sheen on all types of hair,” Frédéric Fekkai, celebrity hairstylist and Fekkai founder, previously told Well + Good. While using your tools in moderation will help mitigate damage along your hot-tool journey, going the air-drying route is going to be your best course of action for your hair’s health—just be sure to do it correctly, (especially in the wintertime) with the right hair-styling products.

“Most hair textures will be able to air dry with stylish results,” explains Teresa Romero, master hair and makeup artist, creative director for Sam Villa, and artistic/education director for Jose Luis Salon. “It just takes a little prep.” Which is why having the right air-dry products is key. Romero says air-dry stylers vary in hold and visual results, so it’s important to choose one based on your hair texture and desired look. “As a general approach, straight to wavy hair will benefit from an oil, lotion or cream…However, curls and coily textures may need this followed by a salt spray, gel, or shaping mousse for extra control.”

If quitting hot tools is on your list of 2023 resolutions, or you just want to up your hair health this year, these stylist-approved, air-dry products are here to help.

Bumble and bumble, Don’t Blow It Fine Hair Styler — $32.00

If you have fine hair, Bumble and bumble’s Don’t Blow It Styler will keep your hair hydrated as it air dries without weighing down your strands, according to Jennifer Korab, a New Jersey-based hair stylist and owner of Renaissance Salons. “I love how this product hydrates the hair, enhances texture and has a product free feel,” she tells us. The cream styler even contains UV filters to keep hair healthy and combat the drying effects of sun damage.

“I love using the Biolage All-In-One Multi Benefit Spray,” says celebrity hairstylist Sunnie Brook, who’s worked with major starlets like Jenna Ortega, Elisabeth Moss, and Ashley Park, among others. “It works on all hair types and textures and won’t weigh your hair down.” The multi-tasking spray claims to moisturize, detangle, de-frizz, and strengthen hair, while leaving it with a healthy shine—and Brook says delivers its promises. “It controls frizz, repairs split ends, adds shine, and leaves your hair feeling clean and perfectly air dried.”

rucker roots styling mousse on a white background
Rucker Roots, GTC Texture Hair Styling Mousse — $14.00

Pro stylist Deaundra Metzger keeps this styling mousse in her kit for air dried looks on set. “I use it for all the hair of my curly textured looks, whether it be an actor’s natural hair or a wig,” she explains. “It defines and hydrates curls or coils and keeps hair hydrated and bouncy.” The styling mousse uses natural ingredients like ginger root oil, turnip, and carrot extracts (hence the “GTC” in the name), along with biotin and vitamin E to support stronger, healthier hair over time. Metzger says a little of the mousse goes a long way, and that it won’t leave hair feeling stiff or flaky.

sun bum sea spray on a gray background
Sun Bum, Texturizing Sea Spray — $17.00

Clayton Hawkins, the stylist behind Olivia Rodrigo, Elizabeth Banks, and Kiernan Shipka’s most gorgeous hair looks, loves this Sun Bum texturizing spray for an air dried style. “It gives hair body and texture for that beachy, windswept look,” Hawkins shares. “It’s made with Hawaiian black lava sea salt, sea kelp and seaweed to define and nourish your strands.” In addition to smelling like a tropical vacation, the lightweight formula blocks humidity and offers UV protection for a healthy, frizz-free look.

ouai wave spray on a white background
Ouai, Wave Spray — $28.00

“One of my absolute favorite air dry products is the Ouai Wave Spray,” says Krysta Biancone, co-founder Amari Salon & Spa and stylist at Hair by Krysta. “I love using it to give my clients beachy waves, without any of the sticky or greasy residue that you can get with other products.” Made for all hair types, the user-friendly wave spray uses rice protein instead of salt, which means you’ll get all the volumizing benefits, without the crunchy feeling. Plus, it’s scented with the Ouai’s deliciously floral North Bondi fragrance, so it doubles as a hair perfume.

jvn embody foam on a white background
JVN, Embody Foam — $29.00

Queer Eye star and founder of hair-care brand, JVN, Jonathan Van Ness created a volumizing styling foam that creates a stunning air dry, and supports thicker, healthier looking hair along the way. “The Embody Volumizing Foam has a volumizing polymer that adds style memory to keep the volume, biotin to improve hair thickness, and marshmallow root extract that provides soft hold, body and hydration,” Van Ness tells us.

To bring touchable definition to hair while drying, Van Ness says 2-3 pumps is all you need. “This product packs a serious dose of volume and unlike other foams, it leaves your hair healthy and not crunchy.” Another air drying MVP is the brand’s Complete Air Dry Cream ($26), “it brings out your best, most defined and frizz free style no matter your natural hair texture,” Van Ness explains.

8 Scalp-Friendly Foods a Trichologist and Dietitian Want You To Add to Your Diet for Healthier Hair https://www.wellandgood.com/foods-for-scalp-health/ Fri, 02 Dec 2022 22:00:26 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=983169 You can’t have healthy hair without having a healthy scalp. Using products that keep your scalp clean and balanced is key, but the process doesn’t stop there. You also want to eat foods that support scalp health, explains Helen Reavey, a trichologist (aka certified scalp expert) and celebrity hairstylist.

“When you’re low in a particular mineral or a nutrient, what you do have goes to protect every other organ in your body and feed them and give them nutrients,” says Reavey, who is also the founder of hair-care brand Act+Acre. “Obviously, your organs need it more, so your skin, hair, and nails are the last to get it.

And when your scalp doesn’t have the necessary nutrients, it can’t function at its best, says Sonya Angelone, MS, RDN. “The scalp is basically skin on your head. And, as with skin on the rest of your body, it needs certain nutrients to stay healthy.”

Below, Angelone and Reavy share some of the best foods for scalp health.

8 best foods for scalp health

1. Water

Water isn’t technically food, but it is something that you should ingest for the sake of your health. “Skin needs to stay well-hydrated for good blood circulation and to maintain its integrity,” says Angelone. To make sure you’re getting enough water, she says to drink about half your weight in ounces of water. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you need 75 ounces of water (about 10 cups) a day.

2. Yogurt

“Vitamin A is important to produce sebum, an oil that helps keep the scalp moisturized and hair healthy,” says Angelone. “Good sources are animal products and fortified foods. Concentrated amounts are found in liver, fish oil, milk, yogurt, and eggs. Some ready-to-eat cereals and shakes also contain vitamin A. Fruits and vegetables contain beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A.”

3. Strawberries

“Vitamin C is important to create collagen, the protein needed to produce keratin, the major protein that makes up hair,” says Angelone. “Vitamin C can also help your scalp produce natural oils in the sebaceous glands leading to a moister scalp. Good sources of vitamin C include strawberries, bell peppers, citrus fruits, and kiwi.”

4. Brazil nuts

“Brazil nuts are very high in selenium,” says Reavey. Selenium is a trace mineral that is antioxidant-rich and helps to stave off inflammation. Many scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis are inflammatory, so reducing inflammation can help with these conditions. Just make sure you don’t overdo it on selenium, as too much of it can actually lead to hair loss. “Two of those a day is all you need,” says Reavey.

5. Avocados

“A dry, flaky scalp can result from dry skin or a lack of essential fatty acids like omega-3 fatty acids,” says Angelone. “Staying well-hydrated and eating enough omega-3 fatty acids can help support optimal scalp health and alleviate dandruff, psoriasis outbreaks, and dry skin.” Great sources of omega-3s include avocados, salmon, tuna, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

6. Salmon

Vitamin D can help with psoriasis, a condition that leads to inflammation and scaling of the skin with burning and itching,” says Angelone. “Since this is a disease of the immune system, maintaining a healthy level of vitamin D may help. Vitamin D may also help prevent cells from rising to the surface too quickly resulting in patches of skin with silvery scales. Food sources include fortified milks, salmon, and eggs. ”

7. Eggs

“Iron is probably one of the most important minerals for hair loss and hair growth,” says Reavey. Angelone explains that’s because “iron is important to help red blood cells carry oxygen to the scalp for healthy hair growth. Iron can be found in meat, eggs, seafood, and iron-fortified breads, pasta, and cereals.”

8. Beans

“Protein is always important for healthy skin including the scalp,” says Angelone. “Hair is made up of protein so a deficiency can lead to hair loss. Protein-rich foods include meat, seafood, eggs, dairy, soybeans, beans and lentils, and quinoa.”

The Frizz-Fighting Products You Use In the Summer May Not Work in the Winter—Here’s What You Need Instead https://www.wellandgood.com/winter-frizz-products/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 00:00:31 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=974315 The sticky days of summer are long gone, which means we’re free from humidity inflating our hair and messing up our styles. But even on dry winter days, you can still experience frizz. According to cosmetic chemist Joseph Cincotta, PhD, who was behind the creation of John Frieda’s iconic Frizz Ease line, winter frizz is totally different from summer frizz and must be treated as such.

“Frizz is a misalignment of hair fibers. When hair fibers are aligned properly, you won’t see any frizz. When hair fibers separate and go in different directions or misalign with each other, that’s what frizz is,” says Dr. Cincotta, who is now the chief chemist at Color Wow. “We know how high humidity affects effects frizz, but if you live in [a dry area], what happens is you get a lot of static charge on your hair.”

This static is caused by a movement of electrons between your hair and other objects. For example, “when you’re brushing and the hair is very dry because of low humidity, you get these electrons moving back and forth from brush to the hair to the brush.” When this electrostatic charge happens, all of your hairs take on the same charge (either positive or negative) and begin to repel each other, creating frizz.

The fix? Neutralize the static charge with a conditioner. Conditioners are “positively charged molecules that stay on the surface of your hair and neutralize any negative charge,” says Dr. Cincotta. “Make sure you’re using a good conditioner or a mask that’ll neutralize any static charge.” Additionally, using conditioning styling products will keep static frizz under control. Below, shop four winter frizz products that will leave your strands sleek and controlled.

If You Absolutely *Must* Go Outside With Wet Hair This Winter, This ‘Puffer Jacket for Your Strands’ Serum Should Be a Non-Negotiable To Avoid Breakage https://www.wellandgood.com/iles-formula-finishing-serum/ Fri, 18 Nov 2022 22:00:24 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=974785 Going outside with wet hair is a pretty big no-no, especially in the winter. No, it’s not because you’ll get a cold (that’s just a myth). The real reason is that your hair is more vulnerable when it’s wet, and exposing it to cold air can be highly damaging.

“Water molecules in the hair can expand, or even solidify if it’s below freezing, which causes the hair shaft to swell, making it prone to breakage,” says Anwar Zahar, principal lab technician for Aveda. But we get it—life happens, and you can’t always blow dry your hair before heading out. On those days, you’ll want to reach for the Iles Formula Haute Performance Finishing Serum ($52).

“Extreme cold can be even more damaging than the hot sun to unprotected hair as wet hair can freeze and break,” says Wendy Iles, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Iles Formula Haircare. “The Iles Formula Finishing Serum protects hair from both heat styling and extreme cold. It also keeps frizz and static at bay, which is common in colder, drier climates.”

The serum works by coating your strands with strengthening and protective ingredients. Ceramides and macadamia nut oil keep strands fortified to prevent breakage, while tucuma seed butter offers antioxidant protection from environmental stressors. In addition to the breakage cold air causes, it can also be super drying, and the Iles Formula Finishing Serum will deliver some much-needed hydration to your strands. It’s made with vitamin B5, which delivers moisture deep into your strands, and panthenol, which locks that moisture in. The serum can be used on wet hair (as a protective measure) or on dry hair (for a little extra oomph).

Not only is the serum great for the health of your hair, but it’ll also make it look damn good. Well+Good’s senior beauty editor Zoë Weiner recently added it into her routine, and notes that her typically dull, frizzy hair “has never looked so smooth, straight, and shiny.” That’s thanks to silk extract, which according to the brand delivers “unparalleled luster,” plus the aforementioned macadamia nut oil, which helps cut down on frizz.

One other thing worth knowing before heading out into the elements with soaked strands: The less wet your hair is, the better, so try to get it as dry as possible to lower your risk of damage (yes, even if you’re using the serum). Wring it out with a microfiber towel, or blast it with a blow dryer for a minute or two. “Diffusing your strands on low heat and speed, even if it’s just for a few minutes, will help prevent your strands from completely drying in the colder weather, which is what leads to dryness,” says Irinel de León, another Mane Addicts stylist. The good news is that the Iles serum protects your strands from heat, too, so slick it through your hair and you’ll be good for both your blow dry and the blustery weather outside.

All in all, this serum is like a puffer jacket for your strands. So the next time you’re in a time crunch and have to brave the cold with damp hair, consider it your secret weapon.

This Is How You Can Gua Sha Your Scalp for More Energy, Better Sleep, and Healthier Hair Growth https://www.wellandgood.com/scalp-gua-sha/ Sat, 05 Nov 2022 21:00:56 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=933853 Gua sha, an ancient Chinese beauty practice dating back to the Paleolithic Era, has found a place in American beauty and wellness routines in the last few years. The practice has skyrocketed on TikTok and has garnered quite the celebrity following. But while you’ll usually spot folks rubbing the feel-good stones across their cheekbones, jaw lines, and forehead—or even their shoulder blades to help improve your posture—scalp gua sha offers its own host of benefits that earn it a worthy spot in your self-care lineup.

Likely, the gua sha stones you’re familiar with probably have rounded, smooth edges so they glide easily along the surface of the skin, whereas scalp gua sha stones are pointed like combs so they can push past the hair and onto the scalp. “[This] gua sha method works by releasing tension in the muscles of the scalp, opening the flow of energy in the meridians, and circulating blood and lymph through the tissues,” says esthetician Britta Plug, co-founder of Wilding Empress. “All of this supports scalp health and healthy hair growth.”

While no research has definitively linked scalp gua sha with faster hair growth, one study found that massaging in the scalp region may encourage hair thickness in people suffering from androgenic alopecia or pattern baldness found in people of all genders (although it’s more common in men). So while the topic definitely needs more scientific study, it does have thousands of years of anecdotal evidence to offer.

Of course, if you’re boosting the amount of blood flow to your head, you may also experience a nice boost of qi, or life force energy, when you need it most, according to Plug.  “I love this as a pick-me-up when the midday slump hits,” she says, “and it’s the perfect tool to keep at my desk, since oil isn’t necessary for the scalp work [the way it is for your face or body]. I return to my next task or meeting refreshed after a minute or two of quick zig zag movements across the scalp, combined with some deep breathing.”

Last but certainly not least, Plug says that scalp gua sha may help you calm a tension headache. “Releasing tension in key muscles of the head and neck can provide sweet relief, while stimulating healthy blood flow to the area. Even just taking a few minutes to tend to the tension can make a huge difference,” she says. And thus, there are a whole host of reasons you may decide to whip out your gua sha and get to work.

Below, Plug walks you through step-by-step instructions for giving yourself a nice little massage next time you’re feeling drained, have a headache, or just want to take care of your scalp.

How to scalp gua sha, step-by-step

Step 1: Apply hair oil (optional)

Pump some oil (perhaps a multitasking hair and scalp option) into your hands and apply it across your scalp. You can also skip this step if you don’t have oil on hand or if you find that you like the feel of a dry scalp more. If you like, draw a bath or get under a comfortable blanket before you start, so you’ll be nice and cozy.

Step 2: Start releasing tension in the scalp

Grab your gua sha comb and “begin by releasing areas of tension, such as the temporalis muscle, the whole area of the scalp above the ear,” Plugg says. “For this, hold the stimulating scalp comb fairly flat, with the teeth of the comb lined up along the hairline at the temple. Press, and lift, as if giving yourself a facelift. Wiggle, shimmy, and release. Repeat the deeper press and release on any other areas of tension.” Continue this process for as long as you desire.

Step 3: Activate blood flow

The next part of the process is a little more energetic. “Holding the stimulating scalp comb perpendicular, zig zag through with light quick strokes,” Plugg says. “Work section by section, covering the entire scalp. It should feel stimulating and invigorating.”Remember not to bear down too hard; you don’t want to wind up yanking out a chunk of hair.

Step 4: Give the area around the scalp some TLC

“Use the U edge, or flat edges, of the stimulating scalp comb to release the back of the neck and shoulders,” Plugg says. “I highly recommend this if using for headache relief! Oil is necessary for slip on these areas.” Take your time and enjoy.

Stylists Say Increasing Your Scalp Circulation Is the Secret for Healthier, Longer Hair—Here’s How To Do It for $0 https://www.wellandgood.com/scalp-circulation/ Thu, 13 Oct 2022 21:00:44 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=924711 The best part about going to a salon is undoubtedly the little scalp massage would get while your hair is being shampooed. It’s impossible not to zen out in that moment and let your worries run down the drain. Aside from feeling good, that massage is actually really good for your hair health because it boosts scalp circulation.

“Scalp circulation plays a big role in impacting hair health,” says Todd Edwards, a Mizani artist and hairstylist based Atlanta. That’s because our blood carries nutrients. So when circulation is increased in the scalp, those nutrients are distributed throughout the scalp and the roots of the hair. And according to Mary Lupo, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New Orleans, “increased circulation seems to encourage hair growth.”

3 ways to increase scalp circulation

1. Massage your scalp

The simplest (and cheapest) way to improve scalp circulation is with a DIY massage. “Giving your scalp a daily massage or brushing your scalp every day is very important, this will get the blood flowing,” says Edwards. Rubbing with your fingers (tips, not nails) or a brush is more than enough, but if you want to get fancy, you can use tools like the manual Briogeo Scalp Revival Stimulating Therapy Massager ($18) or the electric EXT Spa Scalp Massager ($90). Both of these can be used on dry hair or in the shower while you’re shampooing.

2. Use products that dilate blood vessels

Some of the ingredients we use in hair care products can serve double duty by dilating the blood vessels in the scalp, thus increasing blood flow. “There are different products you can use such as anything with peppermint or eucalyptus oil—these will help with scalp circulation,” says Edwards. He recommends the SH-RD Intensive Full & Thick Hair Essence ($60) and the Mizani Scalp Care Soothing Scalp Lotion ($23). Canviiy ScalpBliss ($20) is also a fabulous option.

SH-RD Intensive Full & Thick Hair Essence — $60.00

This botanical serum improves root circulation and stimulates cell growth of the hair follicle to boost hair growth with Capixyl and Capilectine, two bioengineered ingredients made to promote hair growth and reduce inflammation.

Mizani Scalp Care Soothing Scalp Lotion — $23.00

This calming scalp lotion is made with circulation-boosting eucalyptus. Additionally, this essential oil works with avocado oil and aloe vera to soothe and moisturize dry, itchy scalps.

Canviiy ScalpBliss — $20.00

This super-soothing serum is packed with peppermint oil and gives your scalp an instantly refreshed, soothed, and tingly feeling.

3. Use red light therapy

Dr. Lupo explains that red light is a cellular stimulator for repair and helps to increase blood circulation. The above massage tool from EXT spa also has red lights, allowing you to get a massage while performing red light therapy. Other great tools are the iRestore Essential helmet ($695) and the Trophy Skin RejuvaliteMD ($199).

iRestore Essential
iRestore Essential — $695.00

This red light helmet allows you to experience the therapy all over your scalp with ease. Just wear it for 25 minutes every other day to target the most common areas of hair thinning and balding with 120 medical-grade lasers and LEDs.

Trophy Skin RejuvaliteMD
Trophy Skin RejuvaliteMD — $199.00

Aim this light at your scalp to reap the red light benefits.

Dealing With Dull, Dry Hair? Stylists Say a Scalp ‘Reset’ Is Key To Bringing Strands Back to Life https://www.wellandgood.com/scalp-reset/ Mon, 19 Sep 2022 23:00:28 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=914429 With so many great products on the market, it can be easy (and very tempting) to do all of the things to your hair on a regular basis. But while we all love our shampoos/conditioners/masks/treatments/styling products/dry shampoos, overdoing it on certain formulas can have some not-so-great consequences for the overall health and appearance of your hair.

As any stylist will tell you, your hair is only as healthy as your scalp. And when your scalp isn’t able to properly “breathe”—meaning that it’s covered in follicle-clogging product buildup—you’re pretty much guaranteed to see the effects on your strands in the form of dryness, dullness, breakage, and overall blah-looking hair.

To remedy these concerns, cosmetic chemist Javon Ford recommends treating your scalp to a “reset”—or deep, clarifying clean—which will help get things back on track. “It’s always good to reset the hair and scalp every so often,” he says. Keep scrolling for what you need to know about the process.

3 tell-tale signs its time to reset your scalp

1. You use a lot of styling products

“If you’re someone who doesn’t use very much product, then your scalp is probably just fine,” says Ivy Lee, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Pasadena, California. “But if someone uses a lot of products—for example they use shine shampoos that are oil-based or dimethicone based, and then they also use a dry shampoo and they use a conditioner and then a leave-in conditioner with additional styling products—they probably need to think about decreasing the residue or simplifying their hair-care regimen.”

2. Your shampoo contains styling agents

When you regularly use shampoos that do more than just cleanse—like formulas that smooth, thicken, shine, or condition—your scalp might not be getting as clean as you think. According to cosmetic chemist Joseph Cincotta, PhD, these shampoos contain ingredients that are “engineered” to stay on the hair after rinsing, like gums and silicones, which can be bad for your hair if they aren’t properly rinsed off.

“These ingredients, such as silicones, conditioning gums, and conditioning polymers, are big molecules and have a positive charge,” says Dr. Cincotta, chief chemist at Colorwow. “And the hair has an inherent negative charge so that positive charge attracts to the hair and doesn’t fully rinse off at the end of the shampoo…These materials that are engineered to stay behind are not only staying behind on your hair to make it shinier, to defrizz it, to thicken it, whatever effect that you’re searching for, but they’re also attaching to the skin.”

When these films are left behind on the scalp and never removed, your scalp can get angry. Worst case scenario, “You can get itchy breakouts on your scalp that can eventually get infected if you scratch them, and then it could cause the follicles to get infected, and you could start shedding hair,” says Dr. Cincotta.

3. You’re getting conditioner on your scalp

While shampoo is for your scalp and hair, conditioner is strictly for your strands.

“That’s because conditioners are actually very irritating to skin,” says Dr. Cincotta. “People don’t realize it, but conditioners have quats, or cationic positively charged molecules, in them that are more irritating than the shampoo ingredients. If you leave conditioner on your scalp, you’re going to get irritation.”

The same goes for any cleansing conditioners like co-washes, lo-poos, and no-poos. Although they’re meant to “cleanse,” you can’t wash your hair with conditioner. Instead, use these in-between shampooing when you want to refresh your hair without fully shampooing (for example, your hair is super sweaty but you just shampooed yesterday).

“Regardless of what you’re using, conditioners are meant to build up, that’s how they work,” says Ford. “They’re like the fabric softeners of the hair-care world. Fabric softeners, if not used sparingly, will damage your dryer. If you just keep building on conditioner and don’t have a shampoo that removes the conditioning agent, it’ll weigh the hair down. It might clog some pores.”

How to give yourself a scalp reset

A proper scalp reset starts with a simple, non-styling shampoo, says Dr. Cincotta, which will help give your hair the deep clean it needs. He suggests incorporating a product like Color Wow Color Security Shampoo ($24), which is designed to leave behind zero residues. Then, you can follow up with styling ingredients in your conditioning step or styling products, or use your regular (styling) shampoo for a second lather.

You can use a clarifying shampoo, like the Olaplex No. 4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo ($30), to help get rid of buildup.

And in the long run, do your best to keep your conditioner and styling products away from your scalp. This can be really tricky if you have short or tightly coiled hair, or if you use a lot of spray products, but be mindful and resist the urge to massage these products into your scalp.

Stylists Say Hair Oil Can Actually Be a *Good* Thing for Greasy Scalps, and I am Genuinely Shocked https://www.wellandgood.com/hair-oil-for-oily-scalp/ Wed, 20 Jul 2022 22:00:03 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=889965 We love hair oil because it nourishes and moisturizes our strands—and you can benefit from it even if you have an oily scalp. Although it seems like adding oil would only make your hair greasier, Jennifer Korab, a celebrity hairstylist in New Jersey, says it can actually help slow sebum production while making your stands healthier. You just have to get the right kind.

“There is no rule that you must avoid hair oil if you have an oily scalp,” says Korab. “In fact, there are many hair oils that will leave your scalp healthier and producing less natural sebum than before. However, certain store-bought hair oils might not be best for your already oily scalp.”

To use a hair oil without turning into a ball of grease, Korab says to avoid any products that aim to make the hair shiny. “Many hair oils also aim to add gloss to hair and the way they achieve this is with silicones that coat the hair.

But if you’ve got dry ends and a greasy scalp, you can benefit from using a glossy oil on just the ends, adds Kevin Kelly, also a celebrity hairstylist in New Jersey. Just be sure to get one that has a thicker, more viscous consistency. “I like a thicker oil rather than a watery oil because watery makes it look too oily and wet-looking rather than silky and shiny,” says Kelly.

How to use oil to curb a greasy scalp

When you use oil on your scalp, it helps to absorb the sebum that’s on your scalp. Korab recommends doing an overnight treatment with the Moroccan Oil Treatment ($16 to $48).  And if you’d like to make the treatment even more soothing, she says you can add a drop or two of peppermint oil ($12).

Koran recommends starting the process by using your fingertips to apply oil to your scalp and massaging it into the skin with circular motions. Next, apply any oil that’s leftover on your palms to your lengths. Cover your hair with a towel or shower cap and leave it on overnight. The next day, add shampoo to your hair before you add water.

“When you leave the oil on overnight, you apply the shampoo on dry hair to remove the oils,” says Koran. “You can do a second shampoo when your hair is wet. Then condition after.”

How to use hair oil to nourish dry ends

“Just because your hair is oily at the scalp doesn’t mean your ends are going to be oily,” says Kelly. If that sound like you, you can add oil to your styling routine. In addition to making your ends smooth and shiny, it will also seal the cuticle, leading to sleeker, less frizzy hair.

Rub a few drops of oil into your hands and apply it to just your ends right after you finish styling, not before. Try to limit oil application to two times before your next wash to keep it from looking greasy. “My personal favorites are Kenra Professional Platinum Luxe Shine Oil ($22) and Wella Light Luminous Reflective Oil ($42).

Nicole Kidman’s Favorite Hair-Care Essentials Are 20% Off Right Now https://www.wellandgood.com/vegamour-nicole-kidman/ Tue, 28 Jun 2022 19:30:37 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=873269 Nicole Kidman may as well have as many Oscars for her hair as she does for her acting—it’s that iconic. Whether she’s rocking her natural curls or styling it in a sleek updo, Kidman’s hair is known for its epic, seemingly effortless volume. But the actress has noted that, over the years, her strands have gone through a lot—and she’s had to re-examine the type of hair products and formulas she uses. Which is what led her to discover Vegamour, a plant-based hair-care line known for its growth-stimulating formulas.

After trying out various Vegamour goods, Kidman, according to a press release, “found her hair undeniably transformed.” It became thicker, fuller, and “noticeably less frizzy.” Kidman was so impressed with Vegamour that she partnered with the brand. One of her all-time favorites is the Gro Serum (now $46), which also happens to be the brand’s best-selling product. Sales skyrocketed during the beginning of 2020 (thanks to stress-related hair loss), and it continues to be a hot ticket item—bottles of this stuff sell every 22 seconds. And for a limited time, you can get it on sale for 20 percent off with code HELLO20.

Gro Hair Serum — $46.00

Originally $58, now $46

Use the code HELLO20 at checkout.

Gro Serum helps increase hair density and length while simultaneously reducing signs of hair loss by treating the scalp with powerful, clinically-tested ingredients. What makes the serum so effective is that its formula is powered by potent, all-natural ingredients. There’s mung bean, which has hair-health-enriching minerals like zinc, selenium, silica, iron, and an entire alphabet’s worth of vitamins (A, B, C B7, and K); Curcumin, which is derived from turmeric and loaded with antioxidants to combat free-radical damage; And red clover, which contains a flavonoid called isoflavones that has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

While more research certainly needs to be done, these hair health-boosting ingredients get the sign-off from derms. “Theoretically, curcumin helps to strengthen the follicle,”  Mona Gohara, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Connecticut, previously told us. Rachel Nazarian, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, is on the same page, previously saying, “Topical antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients such as those found in these products, such as mung bean and curcumin, have shown some benefit in calming inflammatory conditions related to hair loss.”

Kidman isn’t the only fan of Vegamour Gro Serum. Over 3,000 shoppers have left reviews on the brand’s site, most gushing about the impact the serum has had on their mane. One customer writes, “I cannot believe I’m writing this review. I am here to tell you, this stuff works. Like, actually works. Most people would see my hair and think I had this gorgeous mane. But truth was, it was so thin. After I had my second child…it just thinned out. Because my hair was so coarse and naturally curly, I was able to make it look full. The problem was, I had to keep cutting it short, because once it grew out, the thinner it would look. I started using this serum in Jan 2022. By April, it was so full and gorgeous!! I could definitely tell a difference.”

Not only does Gro Serum help encourage growth, but it also nourishes follicles, leaving them soft and shiny. Another shopper says, “I was skeptical but I needed to do something about my thinning hair! After 2 and 1/2 months I’m seeing noticeable changes. Not only do I see the new baby hairs coming in, but hair my feels less oily and looks healthier!”

There are so many factors that come into play when we talk about hair density and hair loss (genetics, age, hormones, stress-levels, etc.), so no product is “one size fits all.” Nor is there an overnight cure, or solution. But Vegamour’s trusted ingredients can enhance hair health, thereby boosting growth and density overall. Just an FYI—you’ll likely have to use the product for at least three months to see a difference (all good things come to those who wait, right?).

6 Ingredients Hairstylists Want You To Add To Your Routine as Soon As You Start Going Gray https://www.wellandgood.com/ingredients-for-graying-hair/ Thu, 16 Jun 2022 23:00:35 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=875853 Almost everyone, at some point in time, will notice a gray strand on their hairline. While some people go fully gray fairly quickly, others may never develop a significant gray footprint. Still, in the event that gray hair is in your future, it helps to know how to care for the color. After all, according to hairstylist and USTI certified trichologist, Helen Reavey, who is the founder of Act+Acre, the process of graying often goes hand in hand with moisture and texture concerns.

“Graying hair does not directly cause dryness but hair can gray at a time when the sebaceous glands in the hair follicle begin to produce less oil than before, leading to dryness,” she explains. “Furthermore, as the hair loses melanin, it can change the texture and health of the hair, so gray hair can become dry and brittle.”

Whether you’ve decided to embrace your natural grays or dye them a different shade, Reavey notes that the below ingredients will help you keep your hair healthy throughout the process. Keep scrolling to learn how.

1. Glycerin and Shea Butter

When it comes to managing textural issues associated with gray hair (or in general), Reavey says that you can’t go wrong with adding glycerin and shea butter into your haircare routine. “They work to hydrate and moisturize the hair to reduce dryness and brittleness,” she explains.

2. Plant-Based Oils

As we age, our sebaceous glands slow down and our scalps produce less oil. As such, the scalp and strands can become dry. To remedy this, Reavey suggests adding plant-based oils, like baobab oil, into your routine. “It will moisturize the scalp and help better manage less oil production,” she says. She also recommends moringa oil, which is known to replenish moisture, revitalize dull strands, and enhance shine. “It [helps] balance the moisture barrier of the scalp to prevent dryness and itchiness,” she adds.

3. Biotin

Gray hair is often coupled with thinning and loss. When hair starts to lose melanin, hair thinning and shedding can also occur, so it is important to support your hair’s natural growth cycle,” Reavey says, noting that biotin, vitamin C, and amino acids can mitigate the effects of thinning.

4. Apple Stem Cells

Each strand of hair has three stages of its lifecycle: growth, transition, and rest. As we age, the process slows down, and the increased time hair spends in the “rest” stage leads to thinning and dryness. Because of this, Reavey recommends adding apple stem cells, which she says have been proven to promote and extend the growth phase, ultimately reducing shedding and dehydration.

5. Squalene

Since gray hair is generally drier and more brittle than other, more pigmented hair colors, it’s especially susceptible to heat damage, says Reavey. “Gray hair can be more vulnerable to damage due to the porosity and texture of it, so using a heat protectant when styling is crucial,” she says. “Squalene [which is said to be the more natural but less stable form of squalane] is a perfect lightweight oil that offers protection from environmental damage like the sun and heat protection from heat tools.”

A Dermatologist and a Hairstylist Are Begging You To Use Antioxidants To Protect Your Hair This Summer—Here’s Why https://www.wellandgood.com/antioxidants-for-hair/ Wed, 11 May 2022 22:00:03 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=859683 Any derm will tell you that slathering antioxidants (and of course, SPF) on your skin is a must during the spring and summer months. Spending more time outside means more exposure to UV rays and pollution, so extra protection is key for keeping your complexion healthy. But what about your hair?

As it turns out, these environmental stressors create the same type of free radical damage in your scalp and strands as they do in your skin, which means they may be the culprit behind your most frustrating hair concerns. Because of this, pros say antioxidant protection on your scalp and strands is just as important as it is on your face. Keep reading to learn more.

How UV and pollution damage shows up in your hair

In simplest terms, free radicals are molecules that have unpaired electrons, which makes them unstable. In an attempt to stabilize themselves, they scavenge healthy cells and snatch up their electrons. As a result, those initially healthy cells become unstable and stop functioning the way they’re supposed to. There are a number of different types of free radicals, but we’re most commonly exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS) free radicals. “The oxygen atoms with the unpaired electrons move around looking for electrons to pair with, and this process of scavenging is what causes all sorts of DNA, cell, and protein damage,” Mark Gray, MD, a New Zealand-based dermatologist and founder of Ao Skincare, previously told Well+Good.

While your skin is particularly susceptible to this type of damage (it shows up in the form of wrinkles, sagging, and discoloration), your hair isn’t immune. “2019 studies found that exposure to air pollution and UV exposure impacts both the physical appearance and chemical composition of the hair fiber,” says certified trichologist Bridgette Hill. Pollution and UV damage causes the hair fibers to become frizzy, dry, brittle, and rough-textured, resulting in a loss of color and shine. What’s more, UV damage and pollution can cause chemical changes to the hair fiber that decrease the levels of protein required for growth and can even destroy the lipid bonds that keep hair strong, shiny, and healthy.

Though you’ll see these effects on the surface of your hair, the damage actually goes much deeper than that. “Direct damage is not only done to the cuticle, or the outer layer of hair, but more importantly to the matrix cells themselves, which permanently reduces hair quality,” says Dr. Macrene Alexiades, MD, associate professor of dermatology and director of cosmetic & clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital.

In addition, sun damage and pollution might just be the trigger to your lack of volume or even hair loss. “Recent studies suggest that pollution and UV radiation can disrupt the hair cycle by triggering the hair cycle into the shedding phase, or exogen phase, prematurely. There is more evidence that excessive UV exposure may be a trigger to an underlying cause of androgenic hair loss,” says Hill.

The importance of antioxidants

In skin care, antioxidants are your first line of defense against free radicals, and that same principle applies to the hair and scalp. “Some reports suggest antioxidants can help fight the sun damage by protecting the cuticles, improve the hair growth in case of alopecia, which is a form of hair fall.” In fact, in a 24-week clinical trial, there was a statistically significant reduction in hair shedding and an increased total hair count in those who used antioxidant hair products compared to a placebo group.

How to use antioxidants for hair

Now, this doesn’t mean that you’ll have to start applying your antioxidant skin serum to your scalp and strands—there are a plethora of hair products with antioxidants inside that are ready to wreak havoc on those pesky free radicals. Firstly, you’ll want to look for the proper antioxidants to protect your hair against free radical damage: Hill calls out enzymes, catalase, superoxide dismutase, Vitamins E, C, and A, and selenium as the best ingredients to build into your protective hair routine.

Because of antioxidants’ water-based molecular structure, they bind to the scalp and strands to create a protective layer. This, says Hill, improves moisture retention, reduces inflammation, and stimulates cellular regeneration. To reap these benefits, Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in NYC, recommends using “shampoos, conditions, and hair masks [that] deliver antioxidants to help preserve the integrity of the hair.”

For additional protection, Hill recommends applying a hair oil or a serum after you get out of the shower. However, keep in mind that these types of heavier products may mess with your style—especially when applied to your scalp. “One of the big issues that we face when it comes to oils we put in our hair is that sometimes it can weigh hair down and be too much for our tresses,” explains Drew Schaefering, a hairstylist at Rob Petoom Salon in Brooklyn. “Hair is like a sponge: When it’s wet, the water distributes the product throughout, and when it’s dry, it absorbs in the areas of contact more aggressively.” So, when looking to maintain volume at the roots, use a shampoo and conditioner duo that will deposit antioxidants onto the scalp and hair roots, and apply a hair oil or serum to the mid-lengths and the ends of dry hair.

Additional Forms of Protection

As with most things in the beauty industry, real care comes from within, and both Hill and Dr. Alexiades note that although the idea of applying antioxidants to the hair and scalp is valid, the science is still relatively new. An abundance of research reports that ingesting foods high in antioxidants and taking oral supplements can be the key to protecting your hair and scalp from oxidative stress. So, while you’re styling your blowout with antioxidant products, make sure to also incorporate antioxidant-rich foods like citrus, bell peppers, tomatoes, and cruciferous vegetables into your diet.

And always remember—when it comes to the sun and pollution (especially for those of you living in cities), there is no such thing as too much protection. Wear hats and scarves as you go about your summer activities, and you’ll be well on your way to a full, healthy, and shiny head of hair.

I Tried the New Olaplex No. 9 Serum for a Month, and It Made My Dry, Bleached Hair Look Healthy, Shiny, and Smooth https://www.wellandgood.com/olaplex-no-9/ Wed, 04 May 2022 12:00:45 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=856061 The shampoo, the myth, the legend: Olaplex. Known for its proprietary bond-building formula that strengthens and protects hair, Olaplex products are coveted by folks looking to repair color-treated and/or damaged strands, and beloved by stylists who want to give their clients a best-in-class blowout. Most recently, the brand launched Olaplex No. 9 Bond Protector Nourishing Hair Serum ($28), which uses bond-building tech along with red algae, an ingredient normally found in skin care (we’ll get to that in a few seconds).

While it launched in late March, I wanted to test out the serum on my own hair for at least a month to see if could really help improve my hair health in the long run—not just after one or two uses. Spoiler alert: If you haven’t, you can go ahead and add this bottle to cart, Olaplex makes good on its promises.

What makes the serum stand out is its unique triple-action formula that strengthens, protects, and smooths. Olaplex’s bond-building tech repairs and nourishes dry, frail strands while the serum’s infusion of red algae extract works overtime by bonding to hair and defending follicles against damage from hot tools, pollutants, and UVA and UVB rays. According to the brand, it keeps your hair protected for up to 48 hours.

Plus, the brand’s entire line works with all hair types. “The reason why Olaplex is good for all hair types is because hair bonds are agnostic regardless of gender, age or ethnicity,” says celebrity hair colorist and Olaplex ambassador, Bianca Hillier. “Curly and textured hair has more disulfide bonds, and is more susceptible to environmental, mechanical, and chemical damage.” The multi-patented formula keeps follicles well-guarded from harsh elements and also reinvigorates strands from the inside out, which is why the end result is shiny, silky, smoother hair.

What my experience with Olaplex No. 9 has looked (and felt) like

I’ve been testing No. 9 for about a month (I’ve used it around four or five times in total), and, similarly to all Olaplex products, have noticed a difference right away. What made this experience different (and what made No. 9 “pass the test” for me) is that I just got extensive highlights, so large portions of my naturally dark brown hair have been bleached and toned. So, I was really hoping the serum would make my new hair—which I love, but feels dry and hay-like—healthier, softer, and less prone to breakage.

No. 9 understood the assignment, and we got off to a great start the first time I used it. After applying the serum to wet strands, I blow dried and styled my hair (which was easier to do than usual, since the serum helped unravel any tangles and made strands easy to comb through). I noticed less hair on my brush, and when I was done, my hair looked shinier and soft to the touch. And it stayed this way for three days until my next wash.

I use it after every wash at this point—and especially before an event when I want to give my hairstyle a bit more oomph. Here’s me two weeks ago at a beauty launch:

olaplex no 9

On its own, my hair is naturally wavy and frizzy. It always has been, but the bleach and constant use of heating tools (blow dryer, straightener, and curling iron) has put it in a constant state of “Mia Thermopolis before her Princess transformation.” With No. 9, I can achieve a smooth, bouncy, sleek ‘do, and I can even brush my hair without messing with the finished product. And! On days when I choose not to do anything with my hair post-wash, I’ve noticed my strands still retain shine and some smoothness—and my blonde highlights are as vibrant as ever. So, this stuff really does work in the long run when you continue to use it.

The texture of the serum itself is lightweight, and a little bit goes a long, long way. I use about a quarter-sized dollop on my whole head of hair, which is near boob-length and is of average thickness. The serum is slick, not goopy or sticky, and it’s easy to work through your strands to make sure every single one is evenly coated.

Before I had a chance to try No. 9, Hillier advised me, “Once you comb through damp hair you can gradually apply a small amount from the ends up to the mids, then the root. Apply more as needed for thick or long hair.” She also added, “The serum works well with both thermal styling and air drying. You can use this product wet or damp but I prefer damp hair prior to heated styling tools. ”

Conclusion?

It’s hard to go wrong with any Olaplex product (the collective hype truly is well-deserved), and the No. 9 is no exception. I know I’ll be using every last drop. Good thing auto-subscribe exists!

The Best Shampoos To Stop Head Sweat—And Other Products Hair Experts Swear By https://www.wellandgood.com/best-hair-products-for-sweaty-scalps/ Mon, 02 May 2022 22:00:40 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=853189 As the ancient, sagacious Home Goods framed print proverb goes: “The cure for anything is salt—sweat, tears, and the sea.” While my inner self won’t argue with the latter two (I’m a Cancer, after all), I raise eyebrows at “sweat.” I don’t like it anywhere, and rarely consider it a “cure,” especially if it comes anywhere near my scalp. If you’re like me, sweat might conjure a negative connotation. Turns out, Home Goods was right: Sweat isn’t all that bad, even for our hair. Mitigating sweat, particularly in warm climates or when exercising, though, is key—and the best hair products for sweaty scalps can help.

What to look for in the best shampoos and hair products for sweaty scalps

The primary goal of hair products for sweaty scalps is to sop up excess oil and, ideally, reduce the amount of times you have to wash your strands.

Incorporating a “clarifying” or “purifying” shampoo into your hair-washing routine is worth consideration, says Carlie Kazimir, a cosmetologist and store manager of beauty supply store StoreCentric in New Jersey. Clarifying shampoos work to remove stubborn oil, dirt, and product build-up, but it’s typically recommended to limit use to once a week or a month. Many formulas contain sulfates, which, while effective at cleansing the scalp, can be drying to the hair if overused. That said, there are sulfate-free options for people who wish to avoid them. You might also want to opt for products that incorporate mint and eucalyptus, says Kazimir, as well as absorbent ingredients, like charcoal and tapioca or rice starch, which help sop up excess oil.

For those who wash their hair more frequently, Stephanie Sey, a trichologist and hair specialist at Grow Gorgeous, suggests looking for a non-drying shampoo with ingredients that lock moisture into the strands without weighing them down. One ingredient she swears by is niacinamide. The B3 vitamin, which has long been purported to hydrate and plump up skin, is beneficial for the hair, too. “It helps with collagen production [to improve] the quality of the skin, and [it] also helps the scalp create a lipid barrier on the surface of the skin—meaning it helps retain moisture for longer [and] the drying effects of sweat,” she says.

As for what to avoid in hair products? Sey mentions that you might want to avoid products that list salt (or sodium chloride) as one of the first ingredients on their label. That said, you also might want to steer clear of products with the word “moisturizing” or “hydrating” in its product name, says Kazimir, as well as options with argan or coconut oil, which can leave hair oily rather than refreshed after it’s been washed.

Additionally, there are hair products, such as dry shampoos, hair refreshers, and scalp treatments, that can keep oil at bay in between wash days. If you frequently style your hair, there are also products that promise to prolong your hairstyle while keeping it looking as fresh as possible.

For some, sweat is a cure, but others may be looking for a solution for their sweaty scalps—if you fall into the latter category, scroll on to find the best shampoos and hair products for sweaty scalps.

Best styling products for sweaty scalps & oily hair

Matte styling spray from Amika
Amika, Un.done Volume and Matte Texture Spray — $27.00
  • Hair product type: Texturizing spray
  • Key ingredient: Zeolite
  • Fragranced? Yes

As Kazimir mentioned, those who suffer from a sweaty scalp have to be really careful about the products they add back into their hair once it’s dry. This matte texture spray from Amika answers the call for a less oil-inducing product that gives hair volume and life. Instead of salt, it uses zeolite (another natural mineral) to give hair that windswept, “undone” look without weighing it down.

What causes scalp sweat?

There are plenty of situations in which head sweat can occur. It happens when you’re in a warm environment, for example, or while you’re exercising. One study also shows that there is a link between sweaty scalps and stress—and interestingly, the researchers found that the more stress its participants experienced, the more they sweat from their scalps or heads. Overactive sweat glands can also come into play. “Excessive head sweat is a form of focal hyperhidrosis called craniofacial hyperhidrosis, which is characterized by overactive sweat glands on the head, face, and scalp,” according to board-certified dermatologist and founder of FACET Dermatology, Geeta Yadav, MD. “Unlike general hyperhidrosis, which could be connected to certain conditions, there isn’t usually a medical cause behind [craniofacial hyperhidrosis]—just miscommunication between your nerves and sweat glands.” Dr. Yadav adds that factors, like stress, hormones, and hot environments can exacerbate the condition.

Is scalp sweat bad for your hair?

Typically, sweat isn’t bad for your hair, so if you’ve ever wondered  whether you should wash your hair after the gym, you might be pleased to learn that it isn’t always necessary. “Sweat is a healthy bodily function,” says Stephanie Sey, a trichologist and hair specialist at Grow Gorgeous. However, she mentions that sweat can leave a salty residue on the scalp, which can strip hair of necessary moisture if you let it sit on your head for an extended time. People can also experienceoily hair in addition to a sweaty scalp. “This may affect some more than others,” says Sey, adding that certain factors, such as hormones, can cause some people’s scalps to produce more oil, and as a result, cause unwanted odor, make hair look greasy, or leave you susceptible to dandruff. That said, it’s important to keep in mind that “head sweat is not an oil problem,” says Dr. Yadav, and unfortunately, “this is not something that can be controlled by shampoo [or hair products].”

How can you stop your scalp from sweating?

Unfortunately, even the best shampoo for sweaty scalps can’t prevent sweat from happening, so if you want to stop head sweat, one of the best ways to do so is with neurotoxin injections to the scalp—otherwise commonly known as scalp Botox. “Neurotoxins prevent your nerves from triggering sweat secretion, reducing activity for a less sweaty scalp,” Dr. Yadav says, adding that the effects can last for several months.

If you aren’t concerned about head sweat but notice that your hair becomes oily whenyou perspire, shampoo and other hair products can serve as great greasy hair remedies. Shampooing your hair will help remove sebum, sweat, and product residue, plus it can also prevent dandruff. However, it’s also important to avoid over-washing it. It might seem counterintuitive, but the more you wash, the drier your hair and scalp becomes, which can lead to more oil production.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I sweat from my scalp?

Whether it’s because they’re in a particularly warm climate or they are perspiring while they exercise, there are many reasons why people sweat from their scalps. Stress is also a factor, and if you experience excessive sweating, it could be due to overactive sweat glands.

Is there a shampoo or hair product that stops head sweating?

Hair products can’t stop your head from sweating, but it can help mitigate the oiliness that might come with it. If you want to stop head sweat, Dr. Yadav, says the best course of action is with targeted neurotoxin injections to the scalp (aka scalp Botox).

Is there an antiperspirant for your scalp?

A few antiperspirants on the market for sweaty scalps exist. However, most topical antiperspirant products—many of which contain aluminum—aren’t typically recommended for use around the face. According to one study, it may lead to the risk of skin irritability.

If You’ve Got a Greasy Scalp and Dry Strands, a Celebrity Stylist Says ‘Combination Hair’ May Be To Blame https://www.wellandgood.com/greasy-scalp-dry-strands/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 01:00:14 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=850917 You’ve heard of combination skin, but have you heard of combination hair? Even if you’re unfamiliar with the terminology, perhaps you can relate to the phenomenon it describes: thirsty, flailed ends stemming from an oily, greasy scalp. An apparent paradox, yes—but one that’s actually quite common.

According to celebrity stylist Mark Townsend, combination hair is definitely a thing—even among some of his clients (celebs—they’re just like us!). Greasy roots and dry ends can happen simultaneously, usually because you aren’t taking extra care to avoid one or the other. When it comes to dealing with this type of hair, the “Goldilocks principle” applies, meaning you need to find a routine that’s just right for keeping both your scalp and strands properly nourished.

Reminder: “Our scalps are skin,” says Townsend. Ergo, the scalp has pores; it’s also capable of producing oils, sweating, and becoming generally out of whack in the same way your facial skin can. It is crucial to view the scalp as the skin that it is to understand why it may become oily, even when the rest of your hair feels dry.

On the flip side, poorly hydrated strands can lead to all sorts of issues—namely dullness and frizz. “When your hair is dry, damaged, or chemically treated, the outer layer of the strand—otherwise known as the cuticle—becomes raised, as opposed to laying flat and smooth, allowing moisture from the surrounding air to enter, causing it to swell and turn into frizz,” Hien Kaplan, co-founder and chief science officer at Function of Beauty, previously told Well+Good.

Below, Townsend explains the biggest causes behind both ends of the combination hair spectrum—which commonly exist in tandem—and what you need to do to combat each scenario.

Oily scalp causes

1. Temperature fluctuations

In many areas of the country, this time of year is rife with temperamental temperatures that seem to dip and soar on a whim. Aside from the general annoyance factor, inter-seasonal temp shifts can have implications for your skin—including the skin on your head. In fact, Townsend calls temperature extremes “one of the biggest causes of combo hair.” Many of us find ourselves with sweaty heads, and when sweat is left on the skin it can lead to clogged pores, as well as a greasier-feeling scalp overall.

2. Overexfoliation

“The other biggest cause of combination hair is over-exfoliation of the scalp,” says Townsend, who points to the popularity of scalp scrubs in recent years trend as a contributing factor.

On one hand, “exfoliation is so important because you want those pores to be nice and open and clean—so your hair follicles can actually grow out healthy hair,” he says. But on the other, too much of a good thing can strip your scalp of its natural lipids and oils—which are what Townsend calls “nature’s conditioner.”

He explains that a lipid-stripped scalp may overcompensate by churning out extra sebum, leaving oily-looking roots in its wake. Excess oil and pore-clogging lipids can also lead to scalp acne and blocked hair follicles. For this reason, Townsend likens a scalp exfoliation session to a facial exfoliation session: necessary, but only in moderation.

Not to mention, over-exfoliating any skin—be it scalp skin, face skin, or otherwise—can weaken the all-important skin barrier. This comes with a host of issues, including transepidermal water loss and, consequently, dryness and irritation. The fix? Finding balance is key, says Townsend. “Making sure you have a clean scalp, but not over-exfoliating.” For Townsend, this means treating yourself to a nice, gentle scrub every two or three weeks.

3. Too-frequent washes

As with too much exfoliation, there is also such a thing as too much cleansing. If you’re someone who shampoos every single day, you might be “over-stripping your natural oils,” says Townsend. In doing so, your scalp may “go into overdrive to create more oils.”

Too much oil equals oily-looking root—which, more often than not, leads to shampooing more frequently in order to keep that oiliness at bay. “It’s a horrible cycle that you have to break!” he says.

So, how does one break the cycle? If you’re an everyday shampooer, try cutting back to every other day. On your in-between days wet your scalp and give it a nice massage—“Like you would if you had shampoo in there—without actually using shampoo,” says Townsend.

As for so-called “detox” shampoos? Feel free to whip out a grime-busting formula every few cleansing sessions, particularly if you use a lot of mousse or hair gel. For a gentle yet effective deep clean, consider hopping on the apple cider vinegar trend.

Dry hair causes

1. Delaying your haircut

The ends of the hair, especially long hair, usually lack adequate nourishment to begin with due to their distance from the scalp. “The longer your hair gets, the more of the fatty acids and lipids that actually make up hair have been depleted,” says Townsend.

To combat this, a trim is a good place to start, particularly if you’ve not been to the salon in a few months (or years—no judgment). Townsend also suggests adding moisture back into the hair shaft, which can help ultra-dry ends look and feel more hydrated. To do so, look for hair-care products that feature skin-care-level ingredients—which, thanks to the recent “skin-ification” of hair, is easier than ever. Townsend suggests this shampoo from Dove, which contains moisture-locking hyaluronic acid.

2. Shampooing your strands

Even if you’re using the right products, it’s entirely possible that you’re washing your hair in a strand-sapping manner. According to Townsend, many people have a tendency to throw their hair, ends and all, onto the top of the head, ball it up, and create a sudsy mound of shampoo.  The issue with this approach? Our hair strands—from midshaft to the ends—rarely need an actual shampooing.

“Most of the time, we really just need to cleanse our scalp,” says Townsend. “Not all the hair.” Shampooing the midlength and ends of your hair can rob them of natural lipids (recall “nature’s conditioner”), leaving them dry and scraggly.

While you want to keep your shampoo off of your mid-lengths and ends, you’ll want to be sure you’re focusing your conditioner in these spots, as this is the part of your routine that will introduce much-needed moisture. “Therefore, the more hydrated your hair is, the more the cuticle layer will lie flat, leaving you with smooth, flyaway-free strands,” says Nguyen. Look for formulas free of sulfates, as the ingredient may dry out your strands even further.

3. Improper brushing

While many of us overlook our hair-brushing technique, paying attention could help combat combo hair. “Marcia Brady had it right,” says Townsend. “Brushing from the scalp, not from the air, gets those oils to move down the hair shaft instead of staying right there at the root.”

Consider consciously brushing—from your scalp all the way through your ends—before bed tonight. In addition to distributing “nature’s conditioner,” (there’s that oh-so-important phrase again) this method has the makings of a nighttime self-care ritual.

The 6 Best Essential Oils for Rapunzel-Level Hair Growth https://www.wellandgood.com/essential-oils-for-hair-growth/ Mon, 14 Mar 2022 20:45:09 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=406614 I’m a big fan of essential oils. Any time you enter my apartment, you’ll probably catch a whiff of eucalyptus—my mood-booster and stress-reliever. And when I have tension in my neck or a headache after a long day of staring at my computer screen, you better believe I reach for my trusty bottle of peppermint oil to provide some relief from that tingling cooling sensation. One way I never thought to use my essential oils, though, is for hair growth.

Aside from helping with stress relief and muscle pain, essential oils are also great for upping your energy, getting rid of a pesky annoying cough that won’t seem to go away, and even combating toothaches. Yeah, seriously—the uses are endless. While you can use plenty of different oils in your hair—from argan to coconut—a handful of different essential oils are especially impressive in their ability to help you grow it out.

“Essential oils are an effective choice to improve hair growth,” says certified aromatherapist Caroline Schroeder. “Extracted from natural aromatic plant parts, they’re composed of a wide range of unique medical components. Every essential oil comes with versatile properties that can benefit one’s health physically and emotionally.”

Instead of relying on expensive products that promise growth with a long list of not-so-reputable (and sometimes questionable) ingredients, get Rapunzel-worthy lengths the natural way with these expert-backed essential oil solutions.

These are the 6 best essential oils for hair growth

1. Rosemary

Rosemary is much more common in the kitchen than in the bathroom. But you might want to change that because using a few drops before your next shower could do wonders for your hair. That’s why it made our top-10 list of essential oils. A clinical review published in BMJ found that when massaged into the scalp daily, rosemary may help with hair growth. In addition, a 2015 study published in SKINmed Journal found rosemary may help protect against hair loss.

“Rosemary is a great choice for hair growth and hair thickness because the essential oil can repair, stimulate, and regulate cells. That means it can help to reduce or balance oily discharge at the hair follicles,” Schroeder says. “In addition, its aroma is uplifting and energizing on the mind, which is especially great in the morning.”

How to use it: Blend 2 to 3 drops of rosemary essential oil in a handful of any carrier oil, like coconut or almond oil. Massage it gently into your scalp and leave it for a few minutes before washing it out with shampoo. Apply twice a week.

2. Cedarwood

Aside from being great in your bath to help you find your calm, cedarwood can also help boost hair growth. “Cedarwood helps stimulate the hair follicles by increasing blood circulation to the scalp,” says Puneet Nanda, Ayurvedic expert and founder and CEO of the aromatherapy company GuruNanda. “It can promote hair growth, slow hair loss, and can even help alopecia and hair thinning.” In fact, in an older study published in JAMA Dermatology, cedarwood—along with rosemary, thyme, and lavender—were found to help treat hair-loss in those with alopecia.

How to use it: Add two drops of cedarwood into a carrier oil, like coconut oil, and massage it into your scalp. Leave it for 10 to 20 minutes before shampooing.

3. Lavender

Speaking of lavender, it’s beloved for its calming scent—and your scalp is sure to enjoy it just as much as you do. “The essential oil of lavender is beneficial for numerous applications. Mostly, it is known for its ability to heal and soothe the body and mind. Due to its special composition, it can support all kinds of skin damages and is a powerful agent for improving hair growth,” Schroeder says. “Since lavender is a very gentle oil, one can use it more often.”

How to use it: Blend three drops of lavender oil with a handful of any carrier oil, or put one drop at a time into your shampoo. You can use it several times a week.

4. Peppermint

If you think peppermint oil feels great on your neck and temples, just wait until you massage it into your scalp. “When thinking of peppermint, its fresh, stimulating, and uplifting aroma comes to one’s mind immediately. It has a cooling effect on the skin and increases local circulation. It’s a beneficial choice for hair growth because it can stimulate the hair follicles.” A small 2014 study published in Toxicological Research found it was effective in aiding in hair growth.

How to use it: Mix one drop of peppermint essential oil with a handful of any carrier oil and gently massage it onto your scalp. Important: Don’t leave it on longer than five minutes before washing it out with shampoo. Apply twice a week.

5. Geranium

If you want healthy hair, you need a healthy scalp. And according to Schroeder, geranium essential oil is a winner. “Geranium essential oil can regulate dryness, excess oil, and the production of sebum. To improve hair growth, a healthy scalp is key. Since geranium balances secretions around the hair follicles, it’s an effective agent for hair growth.” While there isn’t much research on geranium’s effects on hair growth, a 2017 study published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine found it did promote hair growth.

How to use it: Add one drop of geranium essential oil to a small handful of your shampoo, massage it into your scalp, and wash your hair as normal. Apply several times a week.

6. Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is used for everything from combating sweaty feet to freshening up your toothbrush. It’s also really great for cleaning up your your scalp. “The essential oil of tea tree has cleansing properties. It’s widely used to combat infections,” Schroeder says. “Tea tree essential oil can improve hair growth because it can open clogged hair follicles.”

How to use it: Since tea tree oil can cause skin irritation, dilute it well. Blend up to 15 drops into your shampoo and use it as normal.

A Bottle of This ‘Magic’ Hair and Skin Elixir Sells Every 30 Seconds, and It’s Packed With Derm-Approved Ingredients https://www.wellandgood.com/monat-rejuveniqe-oil/ Sun, 13 Mar 2022 18:00:01 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=827115 When it comes to skin care, there are very few products worth magic, but MONAT Rejuveniqe Oil ($99) is just that. What makes the product a bestseller is that it’s designed to balance, rejuvenate, and treat every inch of the body —from the top of your head to the bottom of your heels.

This luxurious oil is so sought after because of its superstar ingredient list, which is stacked with the purest forms of antioxidants, oils, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids. This innovative formula is designed to hydrate hair and skin by replenishing any much-need nourishment. Let’s break it down.

To call out just a few of the powerhouse actives on the list, we’ll start with moringa oil. Packed with vitamins A, E, and C and omegas 3, 6, and 9, the oil is beloved for its ability to treat hyperpigmentation and discoloration. “In vitro studies have shown that moringa can be used as an antioxidant and the extract of the moringa leaves can absorb UV light,” Kavita Mariwalla, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York,  previously told Well + Good. “There is also some interesting data to show that extracts from moringa seed, leaf, and pulp can speed wound healing and improve the appearance of scars.”

Another standout ingredient in this extra nourishing formulation is carrot seed oil. As Kelly Jones, RD previously told Well + Good, this ancient antioxidant “has potential to be used for brightening and moisturizing” when diluted with other carrier oils. It’s also known to help with inflammation and anti-fungal treatments.

To up its anti-inflammatory prowess, the elixir also contains coconut oil, which dermatologists frequently turn to for its barrier-fortifying abilities. “Coconut oil is a natural anti-inflammatory, and full of fatty acids that help improve the skin barrier,” board-certified dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, MD told Well+Good.

This powerhouse combination can deliver serious benefits to both the skin and hair, which is what makes this multi-purpose oil such a worthy investment. Below, three ways you can use it all over.

1. Intensive hair hydrating treatment

If your hair is feeling dry and flaky post-winter, use this oil as a mask to give your hair an extra drink of hydration. Apply a generous amount to damp hair and scalp and then wrap your head with a warm towel. Wait 30 minutes, then rinse for hair that feels nourished and looks shiny.

2. Anti-frizz leave-in finishing treatment

To get that post-blowout glow, apply a small out of this elixir after styling your hair with hot tools. This will prevent breakage, protect hair strands, and add a glossy finish that holds texture throughout the day.

3. Facial moisturizer

Ahead of your daily moisturizer, apply the elixir to any problem areas on your face in the morning and at night. It’s designed to hydrate, protect, and improve fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration.

‘I’m a Celebrity Hairstylist, and These Argan Oil Shampoos Are Basically Fertilizer for Your Dull, Damaged Strands’ https://www.wellandgood.com/best-argan-oil-shampoos/ Thu, 03 Mar 2022 22:00:44 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=805373 Of all the hydrating hair cleansers on the market, few are as effective and nourishing as argan oil shampoos. The indulgent oil has become a hair care staple in many hair care routines, thanks to its healing and moisturizing benefits on tired manes and scalps alike.

Hair feeling really dry, like it needs a cool burst of hydration? Try washing with an argan oil shampoo. These shampoos cleanse hair from dirt and grime while giving strands some serious TLC.

Why hair loves argan oil

Let’s back things up—why is argan oil so good for hair in the first place? Here to explain is Gregory Patterson, a hairstylist and Sally Beauty Celebrity Consultant, who’s an expert on the illustrious extract. Patterson explains that argan oil is so great for both the hair and the scalp because it’s full of essential fatty acids and vitamins. “It’s a multi-use oil that can cover, heal, and hydrate everything from your skin to your scalp and everything in between,” he says. “Argan oil can help moisturize dry itchy scalp, nourish the root follicle—yay, hair fertilizer!—protect from heat damage, and help to heal and strengthen dry, dull ends.”

And while there’s this misconception that argan oil is only for thick or curly hair, Patterson confirms that it’s actually great for all hair types. The key is in the amount you use (if you go the pure oil route). “I would recommend three to five drops for fine [hair], five to seven for medium [hair], and eight to 10 drops for thick, coarse curly [hair],” Patterson says. “Also, if your scalp is prone to oil, make certain to only apply it to the ends because as you brush your hair, with every stroke you carry some oil up with you.” (It’s especially great if you use a ton of dry shampoo.)

Or, you can go the argan oil shampoo route, which gives hair more moisture while you cleanse. If you have really dry or coarse hair, Patterson suggests keeping a bottle of the pure stuff on hand and adding a few drops to your shampoo for what he dubbed a “SHOIL Cleanse”: “Use your normal shampoo with an extra dose of hydration—you’ll get the cleanse while some of the oil will bind to the rough layers of the cuticle. It’s perfect for wet hair because that’s when it’s most absorbent.”

Otherwise, give Patterson’s picks, and our suggestions, a chance below.

The best argan oil shampoos

Best overall

One N' Only Argan Oil Moisture Shampoo — $13.00

This is one of Patterson’s favorites, thanks to its formulation which includes Argan oil and acacia collagen to prevent signs of aging hair. As with any good shampoo, it’s free from any sulfates, parabens, or harsh chemicals that can damage the hair over time. Use this shampoo, and Patterson says you can skip adding argan oil in separately to your existing shampoo.
