The Angel Number 555 Brings New Beginnings and Much-Needed Life Changes https://www.wellandgood.com/angel-number-555/ Fri, 05 May 2023 00:02:23 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1039567 Are you someone who looks forward to change or loathes it? Do you embrace it, or avoid it at all costs? No matter where you fall on the scale, the anticipation for change is bound to give you pause—whether you apply positive or negative connotations to it is solely up to you.

That said, if you’re someone who believes in signs and looks for them in your daily life when navigating new opportunities and challenges, be sure to keep an eye out for the number 555 and all variations of it (including the solo angel number 5). You might see it on the clock, as part of a phone number that randomly pops up on your caller ID, or at the bottom of your HomeGoods receipt.

Whatever the case may be: Those three numbers could be a sign that your guardian angels are reaching out with a message. That’s the notion behind angel numbers—a phenomenon that has captivated TikTokers, garnering over 1.5 billion mentions of the phrase. Intrigued? Keep reading to learn what angel number 555 meaning could imply for your life.

What is the meaning of angel number 5?

Let’s take a beat before diving directly into the meaning of angel number 555. After all, the digit it’s comprised of plays a role, too.

“In numerology, the number five means change, liberation, and freedom from restrictions and chaos,” says numerologist, astrologist, and tarot reader Vannessa Williams, of Beyond Your Sun Sign. In that sense, the number five is all about leaning into new beginnings without fear of what could go wrong. Now, let’s chat angel number 555.

What is the meaning of angel number 555?

Like its single-digit sister, angel number 555 is all about ch-ch-ch-changes. “The angel number 555 [is telling you to] get ready for changes,” Williams says. “These changes will impact your duties and responsibilities.”

With this in mind, seeing angel number 555 could be a sign that a shift is on the horizon in your career or personal life and could incorporate everything from layoffs and promotions to breakups and new flames. That’s the thing about angel number 555: It’s not necessarily a sign that something is coming that you’ll be thrilled about; rather, it’s a reminder that a transition is en route and it acts as a reassurance that no matter what it is, you’ll survive it and discover something even better suited for you on the other side.

“These changes will feel chaotic but they are a necessary change for your highest good,” Williams assures us.

(Need a constant reminder that change is good? Consider adding the Child of Wild 555 Angel Energy Necklace ($68) to your accessories wardrobe.)

What to do if you see angel number 5 everywhere

“Buckle up!” Williams exclaims, encouraging us to prepare for change while actively leaning into it, as opposed to resisting it. While your initial reaction to the idea of change may be to cringe, if you see the number five frequently throughout your day, know that it’s a message from your guardian angels (or the universe) to embrace and make the most of it because it will all work out for the best.

“The number five is encouraging you to take a leap of faith,” says numerologist Joy Woodward, author of A Beginner’s Guide to Numerology. Only you can decide if you’re willing to trust the process and yourself to move forth with angel number 555 as your guide.

What is the significance of the date 5/5?

Just like on license plates, receipts, clocks, and GPS screens, repeating numbers in dates are something to be cognizant of. In the case of May 5 (5/5), Williams says it’s normal to feel an urge to start something new and fulfilling in your life.

“On 5/5, we will feel a collective inspiration to enact changes that lead to freedom,” she says. “These changes can be disguised as a magnified new beginning, but at the core, it is a liberation.”

Want proof that new beginnings manifest on 5/5? On 5/5/1921, Coco Chanel released Chanel No. 5, a fragrance that remains a classic over 100 years later.

Now the only question is, how will you move forward with the power of 555?

Angel Number 5 Signifies Life Changes, New Opportunities, and Spiritual Freedom https://www.wellandgood.com/angel-number-5/ Wed, 03 May 2023 23:02:02 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1039679 Change is normal, but there’s no doubt that it can be scary, too. Whether you’re moving across the country, headed back to your hometown, anticipating a layoff, considering a new career path, or are simply on the verge of a fresh start in some capacity, it’s common for the process (or the prospect of it) to be terrifying—even if something so much better awaits on the other side.

The trick is to not let your own fear hold you back from leaning into what could be the next best experience of your life. If you need a little help, look to the universe. If you keep your eyes open and maintain a sense of childlike wonder, intrigue, and endless possibility, you might find messages that others may simply brush off as coincidences. That’s the beauty of angel numbers—they’re designed to guide you.

So, if you’re on the precipice of a life-altering decision, take a look around. If the number 5 constantly pops into view, you’ll know what to do. Keep reading to learn why.

What is the meaning of angel number 5?

Logistically, the number 5 is the median number; it’s halfway between 1 and 10. When rounding, if a number is below 5, it’s rounded down; if it’s above, it’s rounded up. In that sense, the number 5 is the milestone numeral that creates the shift from the low numbers to those higher up.

When it comes to the meaning of angel number 5, numerologist Joy Woodward, author of A Beginner’s Guide to Numerology, says that change, transition, and progressive thinking are at the forefront. The number 5 is also a sign of freedom, versatility, promotion, and being resourceful and adaptable, she says.

In short, astrologist, designer, and writer Jacquelyn Tierney says that the number 5 offers liberation—it’s a sign to free yourself into your deepest desires, without regard for limiting beliefs surrounding your wants and needs.

“The number five is a symbol for the energetic vibration of change, transformation, shift, shake-ups, desire, travel, expansion, imagination, options and opportunity, strength, curiosity, sexuality, adventure, healing, release, risk, and remodel,” she lists.

The significance of angel number 5

With so many possibilities under the umbrella of angel number 5, Tierney admits that the vibration of the number can feel both invigorating and chaotic. But that’s what cements the significance of angel number. It’s a sign to embrace every aspect of change—the good, the bad, the ugly—with the assurance that the universe has your back and will guide you through it.

What to do if you see angel number 5

If the number 5 keeps popping up in your life, Tierney says to take it as a sign from your angels that it’s time to expand your life.

“The vibration of five moves much quicker than the slow and steady four that came before it,” Tierney says. “It is now time to break out of your shell and learn about what freedom feels, looks, and tastes like to/for YOU—new opportunities and changes are coming; be open to the unexpected gifts and blessings.”

Dates with angel number 5

While the number 5 has its own significance that’s then amplified in the meaning of angel number 5, it’s important to remember that technically, angel numbers are repeating numbers (ie: 555), and dates with repeating numbers are said to be the most spiritually significant.

That said, you can still harness the energy of the number 5 when it pops up on your calendar. Just keep in mind the meaning of angel number 5 and lean into whatever changes arise. Remember: The universe will guide you if you let it.

Trust Me—That Viral Belt Bag That Keeps Selling Out Has *Nothing* on This Version https://www.wellandgood.com/calpak-luka-mini-belt-bag/ Thu, 27 Apr 2023 20:00:17 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1053927 Like cargo pants and maxi skirts, fanny packs are cool again. But not just any fanny pack—The Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag ($38), which is apparently the “It Girl” of bags and often sells out online. (And don’t get us wrong, we love it, too.) But if you’re tired of waiting for Lululemon to restock their coveted packs, the mini version of the Calpak Luka Belt Bag ($58)—which I’ve sworn by for years—makes a fabulous alternative.

As much as I love Lululemon’s apparel and accessories, I’ll pick the Calpak Luka Mini Belt Bag ($48) over the Everywhere Belt Bag every time, despite it being $10 more. Here’s why:

The size

For background, I almost never go anywhere without my original Calpak Luka Belt Bag. Ever since receiving the now-discontinued silver belt bag for Christmas in 2019, I’ve been nothing short of infatuated with the silhouette, to the point that I now own seven. Now, I’ve added The Mini version of it into my rotation which is just that—a mini version of the slightly larger original belt bag. Where the Calpak Luka Belt Bag is 11″ x 5.5″ x 3.5″, the Calpak Luka Mini Belt Bag is just 8.5″ x 5.25″ x 1.5″, making it right around the same size as the viral Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag.

Since it’s slightly smaller, it’s quickly become my new go-to for running errands, the gym, and on walks with my pup, Cash, as it fits all the essentials, including my phone, wallet, and keys, as well as a gym lock, AirPods, and lip balm. Since the interior of the belt bag features two zippered compartments (more on that below), everything stays neat and organized, all without weighing me down. Not that the original was heavy, by any means. But the Mini is just more streamlined, giving me a smidge more freedom and flexibility when it’s on.

The storage

Simply put, the Calpak Luka Mini holds more and does so more securely. Where the Everywhere Belt Bag has a back zip pocket and two interior mesh slip pockets, both sizes of Calpak Luka Belt Bags have back zip pockets, interior mesh front zip pockets, and interior back zip pockets to keep personal items in place. Whether I’m using my OG or the Mini Belt Bag, I can ensure all my smaller items are secure, so if I have my bag open and accidentally flip it over, only my larger items will fall out (which can’t be said for belt bags designed solely with slip pockets.)

Photo: Rebecca Norris

In addition to adopting a smaller size to compete with the Everywhere Belt Bag, Calpak also debuted the Luka Key Pouch ($28), which is essentially their take on the Lululemon City Adventurer Backpack Nano ($34). Like the adorable Lululemon pack, it has a carabiner, so it can hook onto belt loops, leashes, or other bag, only it also has an elastic loop on the backside, so that it can attach to the Luka Belt Bag strap (which is how I like to wear it.)

The look-and-feel

The most notable difference between the two bags is the puffy, cloud-like material the Luka collection is known for, which automatically stands out in a sea of fanny packs. The soft, quilted design is as light as it looks and is especially convenient to squish down into other, larger bags during travel (like the Calpak Luka Duffel ($128), aka, my favorite travel accessory of all time.)

While the Everywhere Belt Bag has branding on the front and sometimes on the strap, the Calpak Luka Belt Bags only say the brand on the strap. I personally also like the colors of Calpak better; Depending on the size, both the Mini and 2L Everywhere Belt Bags are sold primarily in boring neutrals, whereas the Calpak Luka Belt Bags are sold in four classic colors, as well as a variety of seasonal shades. Currently, they’re available in a pretty baby blue, soft pink, and a pastel sage green.

Lululemon has my heart for most things, but in the case of the belt bag (and all bags) I’ll forever stan Calpak. Yes, both packs are slightly more expensive than the viral Lululemon version, but are well worth the extra $10, IMO—no waiting for around for a restock necessary.

This ‘Mega-Thickening Treatment’ Made My Fine Hair Look Twice as Voluminous—and Right Now It’s 30% Off https://www.wellandgood.com/rco-dallas/ Thu, 20 Apr 2023 22:00:00 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1052395 Once upon a time, I lived in New York City and attended endless beauty events discovering all the latest and greatest product launches and brand reveals. Of the many, many brunch-and-learns and cocktail parties I attended, there are a few that stand out. The first R+Co event I ever went to is one of them.

At the time, I was working in ad sales at a major magazine and just getting my foot in the door of the editorial side, so getting an invite to the R+Co launch party was nothing short of exciting to my 24-year-old self. The bright, airy loft was filled with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and product displays, and attendees had the opportunity to not only try said products on the spot but to meet the founders behind the game-changing formulas packaged in simple-yet-kitschy bottles. Then, at the end of the evening, we were sent home with totes filled to the brim with the brand’s best-selling products.

Ever since then, I’ve been a big fan of the brand—and because of that, I’m always all ears when a new launch comes out. And let me tell you: The new R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Treatment ($38) might just be the best one yet.

The fine hair struggle is real

Before telling you why the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Treatment is officially a staple in my haircare routine, let me give you the 4-1-1 on my strands. I have long, super fine hair that’s color treated. While I have a lot of hair, since each individual strand is so featherlight, natural volume just isn’t a thing for me. As such, I’m always on the prowl for hair-care products that can lift my roots and help me achieve the va-va-voom look I so crave. (Recently, I fell in love with the Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Dry Shampoo for that exact reason.) As soon as I read the description of the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Treatment—which promises that the formula will”build texture for long-lasting volume”—I knew I had to give it a whirl.

Why I love R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Treatment for my fine strands

The R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Treatment is marketed as a “mega-thickening treatment.” Formulated with strengthening biotin, breakage-preventing ginseng root extract, oil-absorbing rice starch, reparative quinoa seed extract, and hydrating and shine-enhancing castor oil, the treatment is essentially a one-stop-shop for your best-looking hair ever. Sounds too good to be true, right?

When I used it for the first time following my R+Co BLEU Primary Color Shampoo ($59) and Conditioner ($59)—the directions say to apply it after cleansing and to let it sit for five minutes before rinsing out—I was admittedly skeptical. Upon rinse-out, my wet hair felt so sleek and silky soft, I was certain it was going to look majorly weighed down once it was dry. But oh, how wrong I was.

For starters, since my hair felt so conditioned post-use, I didn’t need to apply a leave-in conditioner to easily comb it before drying. (That’s pretty much unheard of with my fine, tangle-prone hair.) After combing, I used my Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler to dry it. First, I used the dryer attachment to fully dry my roots and partly dry my mids and ends. Then, I went in with the volumizing brush to give it a bit more shape. (This is my normal drying routine—when I actually put in the effort to dry my hair, that is.)

As you can see, my naked hair (ie: just shampooed, conditioned, and dried) is pretty much unable to hold onto volume. But with the R+Co Dallas Biotin Thickening Treatment set in, my strands perk right up and actually maintain the voluminous style I create.

To say I’m a fan is an understatement. Need more convincing? Right now you can snag it for 30 percent off, which means you can double your volume for nearly half the cost.

‘I’m a 102-Year-Old Holistic Medicine Specialist, and I Still Ride My Adult Tricycle. Here Are My 6 Secrets to Staying Healthy and Active’ https://www.wellandgood.com/longevity-tips-from-centenarian/ Thu, 20 Apr 2023 13:00:29 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1049785 According to the latest stats from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, life expectancy at birth for women in the United States these days is 79.1. So when we come across those who live well beyond that age, we can’t help but wonder, How do you do it? After all, can a long life really just be genetics, or is it a concentrated lifestyle effort that lends to more years on earth?

Meet the vibrant 102-year-old Gladys McGarey, MD, MDH (aka “The Mother of Holistic Medicine”). When we heard that she still rides her adult tricycle on the regular, we knew we had to glean some longevity tips from the centenarian. We chatted with Dr. McGarey about her daily and weekly fitness and self-care routines, and the habits she believes have afforded her a life much longer than most.

The daily routine of a 102-year-old woman

“My days are pretty simple: In the mornings I stretch, say a prayer, eat a healthy high-fiber breakfast and a cup of coffee, and go about my day,” Dr. McGarey says.

After breakfast, she makes time to connect with others—and herself. “I check in with my friend Rose about my 10-year plan every morning, which helps me know which direction I’m going with my life,” she shares.

As she continues her day, Dr. McGarey makes a concentrated effort to hydrate and fuel her body with nutritious meals and plenty of rest. “At midday, I eat a healthy lunch like a salad or perhaps something heavier before taking an hour-long nap,” she shares.

And despite being over a century old, she always incorporates movement into her day. “At some point along the way, I try to get my 3,800 steps in with my walker, which I often do just walking around my home,” she says.

But Dr. McGarey doesn’t only take daily walks—she enjoys riding her ruby-red adult tricycle (appropriately named Red Bird) whenever weather permits. “I just got my tricycle for my 102nd birthday, and it’s a hoot,” she says, assuring us that she rides slowly, enjoying every minute of it. “Sure, riding the tricycle helps with balance and keeps me fit, but it’s also just a lot of fun; we have to keep having fun throughout our lives—it’s so important to do things purely for the joy of it.”

What she loves most about her tricycle is how it gets her out of her home and in sync with the natural world. “Right now the orange blossoms are in full bloom in Arizona, which brings back memories from my childhood in India,” she shares. “The spring smells so good when you have citrus trees around—so my tricycle pulls me outside and gives me a way to connect with the world around me while moving my body and enjoying being alive.”

After a day filled with mindful fitness, self-care, and fun, Dr. McGarey begins to unwind for the evening. “I eat something lighter for dinner so I don’t go to bed with a heavy stomach,” she says. “I go to bed at 8 p.m. to be sure that even if I don’t sleep—that happens less as we get older—I get plenty of rest.”

The weekly routine of a 102-year-old woman

In addition to her daily routine, Dr. McGarey schedules time weekly for self-care treatments that help her feel her best.

“I receive a full-body massage weekly to move the lymph and nourish my cells,” she says. “The touch is nourishing to my mind and soul, too—I believe everyone needs some sort of safe and comforting touch from others, whether they can afford it through bodywork or just through curling up with a loved one or a pet.”

In addition to incorporating massage into her weekly routine, Dr. McGarey receives cranial sacral therapy (another hands-on technique). “I’m also sure to hug people regularly, so I get many warm hugs throughout my week—if I’m lucky enough to hug a grandchild, even better,” she adds.

Notice a pattern here? “Just about every aspect of my routine is geared toward lining up my purpose and keeping things moving,” Dr. McGarey says. “This keeps my life force active and healthy.”

The power of routine

As is evident on Instagram and TikTok, intricate daily routines are incredibly popular. But Dr. McGarey is quick to point out: Having a routine isn’t just some trend to hop on—it’s something to build and maintain throughout life.

“Some of my routines have always been with me—for instance, I’ve been praying and eating healthily since childhood,” she says. “Others, I developed along the way: I’ve received regular massage for 50 years, and I’ve been napping since my 90s.”

If the idea of maintaining a routine for even a fraction of that time seems impossible, you might want to take a page out of Dr. McGarey’s book. “Overall, I’ve always adapted my routine to what’s possible for me, depending on where I am in my life,” she says. “When I had a house full of little children, or when I had a full-time medical practice and spent long nights attending births, I grabbed onto whatever routine I could manage and didn’t stress about it. Then, when I began to have more time to design as I please, I shifted toward a fuller routine.”

That’s the thing about developing a body-, mind-, and soul-nourishing routine: It has to be flexible. “If it’s inflexible, we miss out on something important—we stop enjoying it, and this can block our life force just as much as anything else can,” Dr. McGarey warns. “Wellness has to be a living process. I don’t bow to my routine, but I hold on to the intention to take care of myself and be responsible for my own well-being, and to do so joyfully. It’s a privilege to care for ourselves in this way.”

Six secrets to health and happiness, according to a 102-year-old woman

Dr. McGarey shares her keys to a long, happy life in her upcoming book, The Well-Lived Life, out May 2. “These secrets work for both physical and mental health because when life is flowing, health naturally follows,” she says. Here are her six big ones, below.

  1. Know your purpose. And if you don’t know it, seek it. “We have to always keep reaching for our sense of purpose, our unique contribution to the world around us that brings us joy, meaning, and what I call ‘the juice,’” she says.
  2. Be fluid. “Life is always moving, and we have to be sure to focus on the ways we’re moving with it,” she says.
  3. Love deeply. That old saying that love makes the world go round? According to Dr. McGarey, there’s truth in it. “It’s crucial to remember that love is life, and that putting our attention on love brings us health and well-being,” she says.
  4. Build community. At the end of the day, the world is so much bigger than ourselves. “We can’t forget the role that community plays in amplifying our life force,” Dr. McGarey says.
  5. There are always lessons to be learned. Some people will say that once they reach a certain age, they’re set in their ways, or there’s nothing left to learn. Dr. McGarey disagrees. “Everything that happens in our life is here to teach us something, to show us the way forward,” she says.
  6. Prioritize people, places, and things that make you feel your best. “When we invest our energy in the things that give us energy back,” says Dr. McGarey, “life force courses through us, quite literally keeping us alive.”

More Women Are Finding Their Power in the Weight Room—And Enjoying the Bone-Building, Mood-Boosting Perks https://www.wellandgood.com/weightlifting-women/ Sun, 16 Apr 2023 14:00:22 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1047733 One scroll through TikTok and it’s clear that more and more women are ditching their boutique fitness classes in favor of making their way to the weight room. Seriously: The hashtag #girlswholift has garnered over 10 billion views, while mentions of “women who lift” have amassed over 2 billion. Meanwhile, videos of “weightlifting women” have racked up over 60 million views, and “lifting girl” videos have accumulated over 13 million views.

There’s a growing interest in building muscle, and the old-fashioned weight room is where women are headed to put in the work. For years—decades, really—this part of the gym has been seemingly reserved for men looking to build muscle and strength. While that’s long been a goal for women as well, the macho culture of “pumping iron” has often made women feel hesitant to join in. Not anymore.

“We are seeing an increase in women training with barbells and free weights in general rather than just sticking to cardio,” says Crunch Fitness senior personal training manager Anna McCloskey (who is a professional powerlifter herself, with the all-time world record in the squat at 775 pounds in the 181-pound class). And experts say that this uptick comes with major benefits for the women getting in on the trend.

Why women are flocking to the weight room

Part of the reason why women are feeling more confident lifting in the gym is thanks to fitness influencers like Whitney Simmons and Alex Redmond. On TikTok and Instagram, top female trainers are sharing video tutorials of their strength workouts that anyone can follow, along with fitness pointers, and even some comedic relief. Altogether, it makes lifting a lot less intimidating and a lot more approachable.

The Covid-19 pandemic also played a major role. When gyms and boutique studios alike closed their doors in 2020, female trainers flocked to their socials and Zoom to serve as beacons of optimism, strength, and hope, teaching women all over the world how to lift within the comfort of their own homes. Now that most of us feel comfortable heading back to the gym, women are taking their lifting routines to the weight room in order to access so much more equipment. Since, while most of us have enough space to store a yoga mat at home, fewer have the ability to stock weights and bars, let alone larger equipment like squat racks.

According to personal trainer Bianca Vesco (aka Coach B), living through a pandemic led many of us to change our approach to working out in general. “Covid forced everyone to get really serious about their health, and life became so precious so quickly that, I think, we all started looking for lifelines—lifelines that protected us long-term, and strength training was at the top of that list,” she says. Working out became less about what it made us look like, and more about how it could improve our health.

The growing strength training trend has also fed itself in a way. “Over the years, women have become empowered to speak up and take up space—we see this happening in many contexts, including the gym,” says Caliber trainer Laura Lee Crabbe, CPT. “And when women see other women thriving in the gym, it empowers them to join in as well. There is power in numbers, and it is a comfort to know that more and more women support each other, stand together, and lift.”

Picking things up and putting them down builds stronger bodies

Whether on social media or in gyms, more trainers and fitness experts have spent the last few years talking about how lifting uniquely improves cardiovascular health and bone density, and reduces the risk of injury and disease.

It also improves our overall quality of life by actively building muscle strength. “In the past, women’s fitness has primarily been a combination of cardio and dieting,” says Crabbe. “Diet culture has led women to believe that their ‘dream’ body is the smallest version of themselves. In recent years, though, women have begun to break free of this stigma, realizing that shrinking themselves doesn’t necessarily lead to a happier life.” But lifting can—especially in the long-term.

“Women have begun to [realize] that shrinking themselves doesn’t necessarily lead to a happier life.” —Laura Lee Crabbe, CPT

Functional training through lifting weights is all about performing movements that you do in everyday life, only with weights to make you stronger in the process. “Movement patterns such as sitting down, bending over to pick something up, or even pushing a heavy door, are things we do on a daily basis,” Crabbe says. “So it only makes sense to incorporate movements like squats, deadlifts, and push-ups to your routine.” By practicing these movements with weights in the gym, she says that you’ll not only be better able to perform everyday tasks, you’ll also be more stable and balanced in your daily life.

Lifiting can also lead to a healthier post-menopausal life in particular. When estrogen levels drop during menopause, women become more susceptible to bone density loss. In fact, research shows that within just the first five years of menopause, women can lose between 10 and 20 percent of their bone mass. Weight training is one of the best ways to combat this: “Resistance exercises, including classic strength training, rely on muscle contractions that tug on bones to stimulate them to bulk up,” say the experts at Harvard Health.

Discovering the mental benefits

As effective as weight lifting is for building full-body strength, the mental gains may be even more notable. “For many women, lifting weights isn’t about looking a certain way, but increasing confidence and improving overall quality of life,” says Crabbe. “When you feel strong, you carry yourself differently in the world, and that has huge impacts in and outside of the gym.”

Research shows that lifting weights has the potential to improve your mood and cognitive function, and to reduce anxiety and stress levels, Vesco says. “There are even recent studies that show long-term strength training has the ability to prevent parts of the brain from degeneration.”

Life Time Westchester personal trainer and alpha coach Sarah Pope, CPT, adds that lifting also affects our hormones. “Strength training increases levels of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the brain just like medication can,” she says. These hormones are types of neurotransmitters that carry messages throughout our body. Where serotonin plays a vital regulating role in many bodily functions (including mood, digestion, and sleep), dopamine is known as the “happy hormone”: It’s part of our body’s natural reward system. Meanwhile, norepinephrine is largely responsible for our alertness and ability to focus.

Beyond the hormonal effect, many women are finding that spending time working through reps and sets creates a stronger sense of self. “There’s something about looking in the mirror and encouraging yourself to get through that last rep that helps you build a strong connection with yourself,” Crabbe says. Because form is so essential to lifting heavy weights safely, weightlifting also teaches you how to be more in tune and aware of your body, she adds, “which leads you to be more in tune with your emotional and mental health.”

Then there’s the fact that lifting heavy things is just downright empowering. As personal trainer Bekah Long, general manager of Gold’s Gym Live Oak in San Antonio, puts it, “It would be tough to not feel more confident after picking up a heavier weight than you thought you could!”

To that, Crabbe adds, “When you know you can bench press over 100 pounds or squat your body weight, you know you can take on anything else that comes your way that day.”

The Internet’s Favorite Shoe Brand Just Launched New, Podiatrist-Approved Sandals and Flats Perfect for Spring and Summer https://www.wellandgood.com/birdies-sun-drenched-collection-review/ Wed, 12 Apr 2023 23:00:52 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1048491 Once upon a time, I roamed the streets of New York City in 6-inch, toe-pinching heels as if it were nothing. Now, the very idea of such makes me cringe. Just because I’ve traded in my favorite strappy black stilettos for more comfortable silhouettes doesn’t mean I’ve forgone fashion, though. In part, I have Birdies to thank for that. Ever since getting a pair of the brand’s beloved Starling flats in 2020—and seeing just how fantastic they are for long stretches on your feet—I’ve been a fan of the brand. As much as I’ve enjoyed styling my Birdies flats and sneakers in fall, winter, and spring, though, I’d always hoped the brand would debut warm-weather silhouettes. And now, just in time for spring and summer, they have.

Enter: the Birdies Sun Drenched Collection. Spanning six styles, the collection prioritizes bright pops of color, natural textiles (like raffia), and chic silhouettes that can easily be dressed up or down. As beautiful as the collection is, London-based celebrity podiatrist Marion Yau (aka Miss Foot Fixer) says that the brand’s highly-cushioned, foot-friendly design is what really stands out.

Why Birdies are so good for your feet

“Birdies are made of seven layers of high density foam, memory foam, and premium cushioning—this assists in providing shock absorption that reduces the powerful impact that the foot experiences when walking, which can result in injury and foot pain,” she explains. “With the memory form, the shoe conforms to the foot, making it more comfortable to wear.”

In addition to the cushioning, Yao applauds the arch support seen in five of the six styles showcased in the Sun Drenched collection (one of the styles, The Phoebe, is currently sold out—just an FYI). “[Designated arch support] prevents the arch from collapsing,” she explains. But Birdies doesn’t stop there—they’ve also lined all six of the Sun Drenched styles with heel cookies (aka, heel pads), which cushion the heel.

Another highlight Yao has marked in her book? All of the new Birdies styles have a leather lining, which she says enhances comfort and has a cooling effect, which can help prevent and reduce sweating.

Needless to say, if you’ve been searching for your new go-to spring and summer shoes, the Birdies Sun Drenched collection is worth perusing. In the meantime, keep reading for additional thoughts on my three favorite styles from the launch.

The Kiwi — $130.00

Sold in four colors, this flat sandal is simple and streamlined with a touch of retro flair, which makes it work well for a variety of situations, ranging from workwear to more casual ‘fits, including beachwear (which is why Birdies and Summersalt joined forces to create an edit showcasing how to style the shoes with swimwear and coverups). The only downside is that it’s the only style of the Sun Drenched collection that doesn’t have arch support. That said, Yao applauds the adjustable strap, which she says makes the sandal a universal silhouette for narrow and wide feet alike.

Two notes: First, they run small, so if you’re in between sizes, be sure to size up half a size. Second, these shoes are richly pigmented and dye can transfer, so be careful about wearing them (or packing them) with light-colored clothing.

The Goldfinch — $140.00

Pointed-toe silhouettes are having a major moment in 2023 and these flats—particularly in the raffia iterations—are the perfect summery take on the trend. And Yao agrees!

“Although raffia is not waterproof, one of its most desirable characteristics is that it is both water-resistant and breathable, making it very suitable [in summer shoes],” she explains.

While we favor the natural allure of the raffia Goldfinch silhouette the most, the flats are also sold in leather and suede options.

Just keep in mind: These flats run a smidge small, so you’ll want to go up half a size if you have wide feet or are in between sizes. (That said, I’m normally a 10 or 10.5, and found that while the 10.5 fits my toes the best, I’ll definitely be adding a heel guard for a slip-proof fit.)

the starling
The Starling — $130.00

The Starling is a Birdies favorite (and it’s one of mine—and Meghan Markle’s too!). It’s now available in in a raffia material, which reminds us of lounging on fancy lawn furniture on 4th of July. The Starling also comes in a basketweave material, which feels like something we’d wear on repeat in our cozy summer house in Maine.  Read up more about Starling flats here.

Sizes available: 5-12

Colors (in the new collection): 6

blackbirds
The Blackbird — $131.00

The main difference between The Starling and Blackbird is that the Blackbird has a slight pointed toe, versus the Starling, which is rounded. Both have a loafer-like look and feel, and both have that same cushioning Birdies is known for. Snag two new colors in the raffia material in this collection.

Sizes available: 5-12

The Swan — $140.00

The Swan adds a bit of fancy to your ensemble, with its more dramatic pointed toe and braided strap. Grab it in the three new Sun Drenched colors.

I Get Asked What the ‘Secret’ to My Effortlessly Glowing Skin Is All the Time—It’s This Under-the-Radar Color-Matching Foundation https://www.wellandgood.com/cle-ccc-cream/ Tue, 11 Apr 2023 20:00:29 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1047579 Have you ever tried a beauty product so spectacular that you can’t possibly wrap your head around why it doesn’t have more 5-star reviews or a larger web presence? For me, it’s the CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream ($38). While it touts just 127 reviews on the brand’s website (and 176 5-star reviews on Amazon), this color-changing, complexion-matching formula has been my number-one full-face product since I discovered it shortly after its launch in 2018. (And, as a beauty writer who receives samples of nearly every new face launch to hit the market, that’s saying something.) Intrigued? Keep reading to learn why I’m so head over heels for this creamy K-beauty formula—and why it’s my number-one, most-recommended product to all my friends and family, and now you, too.

Before diving into what makes the CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream so divine, allow me to tell you a bit about my skin. I have a fair complexion with freckles and rosacea but other than that, my skin is pretty smooth and clear, thanks to good genes and an even better skin-care routine. Because of this—and because I like for my freckles to still peek through a tad—I prefer sheer-to-medium coverage full-face products that even out my skin tone and impart a radiant, natural-looking glow without making my skin look cakey or greasy.

While I’ve tried many, many, many CC creams, tinted moisturizers, and foundations (in liquid, cream, and powder form), the CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream is the only one that never, ever sinks into my pores and always makes my skin look like my own, but better. In short: It’s a godsend.

So, what makes the CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream so special, you might ask?

For starters, it’s formulated with plumping and hydrating hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, elasticity-boosting niacinamide and bamboo extract, antioxidant-rich nattō gum, dark spot- and fine line-fighting blueberry extract, and redness-reducing snow lotus flower extract. What sets it apart the most, though, is its one-of-a-kind microcapsule technology that hides teeny beads of color within the SPF 50-infused essence. Because of this—despite being sold in 10 colors—the CCC Cream comes out of the tube white, and only changes color to match your skin once rubbed in. Like I said, it’s incredible—and that’s before even telling you how easy it is to apply.

I don’t wear makeup every day, but when I do, you can bet that the CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream is on my face. After applying my beloved Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream (and letting it dry down), I apply a dab of the CCC Cream on my forehead, chin, and each of my cheeks, and rub it in with my fingers (which I find works better than using a brush with this formula). From that step alone, my skin looks notably dewier and more even.

To complete my face makeup, I lightly swipe concealer under the inner and outer corners of my eyes, between my brows (where I tend to experience a bit more redness), down the bridge of my nose, around my nostril creases, beneath the outer corners of my bottom lip, and in the center of my chin. After blending it in with a Beautyblender, I dab on a bright blush (I’m currently loving the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in the shade Lucky, Nudestix Nudies Matte Cream Blush in the shade Picante, and Danessa Myricks Beauty Yummy Skin Blurring Balm Powder Flushed Matte Color for Cheeks & Lips in the shade Primadonna), which I blend in with my fingers.

I follow up with a light 3-shaped contour using the Jones Roads Bronzer in the shade Dusty Rose and finish with a light dusting of the Charlotte Tilbury Refillable Airbrush Flawless Finish Brightening Powder under my eyes and along my T-zone, et voila!

While I use a handful of products to complete my final look, without the CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream, it just doesn’t look right. On the occasions when I’ve tried to apply trendy formulas or much-anticipated new foundations, I always find that I prefer CLE. In addition to it just plain looking fabulous and being easier than anything to apply, I’ve never had an adverse reaction (i.e. breakout or rosacea flare) to this formula, which makes it even more notable in my book.

But hey: CLE doesn’t only work for 20- and 30-somethings. I had my mom and aunt try the product, and they’ve been swearing by it (and recommending it to their friends) for the past year. Suffice to say, if you’re tired of finicky, full-coverage foundation and endless caking and creasing no matter how hard you try to apply it—and if you’re looking for something that will make you fall back in love with your makeup routine and your skin—there is no product I recommend more highly than the CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream.

This Luxe New Oil Control Shampoo Is My Secret Weapon for Keeping My Fine Hair Grease-Free in Warm Temps https://www.wellandgood.com/oribe-serene-scalp-oil-control/ Tue, 11 Apr 2023 20:00:17 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1047509 As much as I love my hair—and as much of a defining trait as it has become for me over the years—it’s not exactly easy to care for. My fine strands are particularly prone to looking oily and weighed down within 24 hours of washing, but as a color-treated redhead, I have to be careful about how much I wash my hair because it’s the pigment known for fading the fastest. So, like I said, it’s a bit of a feat caring for this mane of mine.

Thankfully, dry shampoo exists. With it by my side, I’ve trained my hair to be washed every third day, effectively prolonging the lifespan of my color treatments. Still, I’m always on the lookout for new and improved products and practices that can make caring for my finicky strands just a bit easier. Needless to say, when I caught wind of the new Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control launch, I was all ears.

The collection consists of three products: the Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Shampoo ($52), Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Treatment Mist ($72), and Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Dry Shampoo Powder ($46). Where the shampoo and treatment mist are designed to be used during and directly after washing, the dry shampoo powder is meant for a next-day refresh.

Benefits of the Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Collection

While oil-control shampoos and dry shampoo powder aren’t exactly revolutionary, I was intrigued by Oribe’s new triple-threat collection for a few reasons. For starters, I’ve never tried an Oribe product that I didn’t enjoy the look or scent of. So from the get-go, at the very least, I knew that this trio, which is housed in lilac packaging, would smell heavenly and add a chic element to my shower and vanity.

Scent and looks aside, the ingredients within these formulas stood out. All three of the products feature the Oribe Signature Complex (comprised of Watermelon, Lychee and Edelweiss Flower, which work together to fight off oxidative stress and prevent color fade, as well as the overall deterioration of strands) at the helm. The Shampoo and Treatment Mist are infused with a Biome Balancing Complex (made of rosebay extract and green marine algae) to “regulate and rebalance the scalp’s microbiome to reduce excess sebum and oil.” The dry shampoo powder also features rosebay extract (but not the Biome Balancing Complex as a whole). It’s also packed with a specialty blend of rice, corn, and tapioca starches to adequately absorb excess oil at the roots, as well as down the strands.

Another thing that caught my eye? The consumer study the brand conducted on the Shampoo and Treatment Mist, specifically. After surveying 101 women, they found that after one application of the shampoo and mist regimen, 91 percent felt their scalp was less oily for 72 hours after use, while 90 percent felt their hair was cleaner at the roots after just one use. Meanwhile, after using the shampoo and mist regimen at least three times in 10 days, they found that 90 percent saw a noticeable reduction of oiliness in hair and scalp. Okay, sold.

My honest opinion

After testing out Oribe’s new trio for the past couple of weeks, I have some thoughts. The Shampoo works well to fully cleanse my hair and make it smell fabulous, while the Treatment Mist gives it a refreshing scent and feel. (While the product label doesn’t mention rosemary or spearmint, those are the whiffs that I get—and it reminds me of my late grandpa’s aftershave growing up, so I’m wholeheartedly a fan.) Something I’ve noticed about the Treatment Mist, though, is that, if I don’t blow-dry my hair after spritzing it and massaging it into my scalp and strands (which is what it says to do), once dry, my roots already look a bit built-up with product—they have that slightly oily sheen. That said, if I blow-dry my roots post-spritz, my hair literally looks professionally blown out. I’m interested in seeing if the results change the longer I use it.

Now: The mane event. The product that absolutely wows me from this collection is the Dry Shampoo Powder—which honestly surprised me. I’m not typically a fan of dry shampoo powder because 1) it’s harder to apply with precision than its spray-on counterparts, 2) it often leaves a white cast, and 3) it tends to have a powdery scent. While the Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Dry Shampoo Powder is a bit tricky to apply (it comes in an aluminum tube with a screw-on top, beneath which is a tiny hole that, when shaken, disperses product), once it soaks into strands, the results are truly jaw-dropping. My hair looks fully refreshed, not to mention infused with volume and imparted with a feathery-soft sheen. Oh, and did I mention it smells incredible?

Pro Tip: The trick with this dry shampoo powder is to let it sit on your strands for two to three minutes before brushing it through from roots to ends. I tried doing so both immediately and after waiting the recommended period of time, and can attest to the difference it makes to exercise a little patience.

Suffice to say, Oribe’s new trio has earned a steady spot in my hair-care lineup. I’d love to see the dry shampoo powder packaging transitioned to a spritzer squeeze bottle (like the Verb Dry Shampoo Powder) but considering the truly stellar results, I’ll make do with a few stray shakes (and I’ll be sure to apply it before putting on anything dark or black, because it definitely showed up on my royal purple sweatshirt when I tested it the first time).

Plissé Is the Ultimate Breezy Fabric You’ll Want To Live in All Spring—Here Are 9 Sets To Look Put Together in a Pinch https://www.wellandgood.com/best-plisse-sets/ Sat, 08 Apr 2023 17:00:41 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1042995 Sometimes putting an outfit together can feel like a challenge—even if you have a million things in your closet. When this happens, it’s helpful to have matching sets on hand to make getting dressed a breeze. While we love matching athleisure and coordinating crop-top-and-skirt combos, few pairings are as trendy and comfortable as plissé. Not sure what that is? Think about all the cute, relaxed crinkle sets that have been undoubtedly swarming your social feeds. Those are plissé sets.

For those wondering, plissé is a type of finely-pleated fabric that often takes on a semi-shiny finish. It can be made of cotton, nylon, polyester, and rayon. No matter what it’s made with, though, plissé is known to be airy and breathable, making it an even greater garment choice for spring. While it feels like pajamas it *looks* like a trendy, going-out outfit. And what’s better than that?!

Something to keep in mind

As cute and breezy as the fabric is, it’s delicate. Nine times out of 10, the material is designed to be dry cleaned only, or hand-washed and hung to dry. While the fabric does require extra TLC, if you ask us, the style it offers is well, well worth it.

9 plissé sets that are comfy and convenient

Good American, Always Fits Plisse Shirt and Pants Set — $228.00

Available sizes: XXS/XS-4XL/5XL

The Good American Always Fits Plisse Shirt and Pants (each sold separately) have a luxe shiny finish and slinky silhouette that makes them especially great for a night out on the town. Sold in hot pink and midnight blue, these sets would look especially great with a statement heel, like the Sam Edelman Leon Feather Heel ($99) or the Dolce Vita Ashby Rhinestone Heels ($160).

Colors: 2

Dressed in Lala, Lala World Plisse Set — $152.00

Available sizes: S-XL

Dressed in Lala is my personal favorite brand of plissé sets—and they’re now sold on Nordstrom.com, as well as directly from the website. I have five of their sets and can attest to the beautiful, breezy quality of each (though, the Lala World Plisse Set is by far my favorite, with its many mix-n-match prints). Beyond the stellar designs, Dressed in Lala plissé sets are fully lined (which is rare), so they never develop static cling.

One note: These sets are made with a polyester-spandex blend that snags easily, so don’t sit on brick or carry rhinestone/embellished bags when wearing one of their beautiful designs. I did on my birthday and sadly snagged the gorgeous fabric.

Reformation, Carrinton 2-Piece Set — $178.00

Available sizes: XS-XL

The Carrington Two Piece set is a bit thicker than other sets on this list, making it perfect for chilly spring and summer nights when you need something a smidge heavier. Made from 100 percent polyester from fabric that would otherwise end up in a landfill, it’s also a more eco-friendly option and proves that caring for the planet is totally en vogue.

Colors: 2

The Giving Movement, Oversized Plisse Shirt and Pants Set — $158.00

Available sizes: XS-3XL

The boyfriend fit of the The Giving Movement Oversized Plisse Shirt and Wide Plisse Pants (each sold separately) makes it a roomy-yet-chic ensemble that I can fully get behind—especially because the garments are more sustainable than other options. Made of recycled polyester and recycled spandex, these pieces have gentle give and are quite breathable. That said, the pants aren’t lined, so they’re slightly more prone to clinging.

Colors: 19

L'IDÉE, Gala Top and Bisou Pant Set — $449.00

Available sizes: XS-XL

Excuse while we absolutely lose it over this stunning royal purple plissé set from L’IDÉE. Whether you’re headed on a European vacation, going to a summer wedding, or planning your next beach vacay, this stunning set deserves a place in your luggage.

Showpo, Beca Plisse Button Up Shirt and Pant Set — $120.00

Available sizes: 0-16

Looking for more solid colors and a more affordable set all around? The Showpo Beca Plisse Button Up Shirt and Flared Pants (each sold separately) is sold in nine colors, including the most perfect bright orange shade. The collared set is made of polyester with medium stretch.

Colors: 9

Never Fully Dressed, Retro Plisse Top and Pants Set — $128.00

Available sizes: UK 6-24

Most plissé sets feature collared button-ups but the Never Fully Dressed Retro Plisse Top showcases a high neck with a chic lettuce hem. Together with the Retro Plisse Trousers (sold separately), this flowy top makes for an updated travel day ‘fit or beachside ensemble. It’s casual yet refined and pairs as well with sandals as it does chunky heels.

Sabina Musayev x Revolve, Savannah Top and Ross Pants Set — $408.00

Available sizes: XS-L

Here we have another plissé set that goes beyond the traditional styling of the fabric. The Sabina Musayev x Revolve Savannah Top and Ross Pants (each sold separately) are sold in three colors, all of which work beautifully for beachy dinners, summer weddings, and chic nights out. The shiny set is made of 100% polyester and features slight stretch.

Colors: 3

Nufiwi, Women Y2K 2-Piece Plisse Shorts Set — $29.00

Available sizes: S-XL

Not sure you can pull off the matching plissé set trend? Before investing in higher-end pieces, consider scooping one of these 2-piece sets from Amazon. Mix and match with shorts, long trousers, and long-sleeve shirts, all affordably priced. Over 600 shoppers have awarded the set—which is sold in 32 variations—a 5-star review.

7 Things That Happen to Your Body When You Take the Stairs Every Day https://www.wellandgood.com/stair-climbing-benefits/ Tue, 04 Apr 2023 12:00:10 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1042021 I lived in New York City for five years, and for the first two, my work commute took me through Grand Central Station every day. With so many people hustling and bustling about, I’d inevitably have to choose between waiting around for an opening at an escalator or mustering up the energy to carry multiple bags up the stairs. Seeing so many other people do it—and hearing of all the benefits of taking the stairs—I started to opt for the latter.

When I moved out of the city, however, daily stair climbs became less of a thing—and I started to feel it. Whenever I did take the stairs, it was pretty obvious how much more winded I was. I also felt like my overall endurance during cardio workouts had changed.

Intrigued by this realization that something as simple as regularly climbing the stairs can drastically impact your cardio health, I set out to uncover the stair climbing benefits that you can get from hiking up a flight (or a few) every day.

Seven things that happen when you take the stairs every day

1.Your heart health improves

One of the biggest stair climbing benefits is its effect on your heart. “Walking up stairs improves heart function and helps your blood pressure,” says cardiologist Ronald G. Grifka, MD, chief medical officer at the University of Michigan Health-West. “There is no question, your cardiovascular system will thank you if you take the stairs.”

2. You feel stronger—especially in your lower body

Your heart isn’t the only thing that will get stronger from taking the stairs every day. “Your skeletal muscles also are better with the exercise, including strength and tone,” Dr. Grifka says. “Going up the stairs stretches your muscles and large joints; it stimulates bone metabolism.”

3. Your bones get stronger

According to the National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center, climbing the stairs is one of the best exercises you can do for bone health. The reason? When you climb vertically, you’re moving against gravity, which puts a heavier load on your bones and ultimately strengthens them over time.

4. You have better balance

According to a study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, researchers found that climbing the stairs significantly boosted balance among healthy seniors. “[It] may contribute to better overall fitness, reduced fall risk, and less perceived strain during daily life activities,” researchers wrote.

5. You have a lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome

According to a 2021 study published in BMC Public Health, researchers found that “daily stair climbing may be protective against metabolic syndrome.” As a refresher, the National Institutes of Health describes metabolic syndrome as a group of conditions that heighten a person’s risk for developing diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and other serious health problems like high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high blood triglycerides, and low levels of HDL cholesterol (aka good cholesterol). Regularly taking the stairs can prevent your risk of developing the syndrome, especially if you’re an adult woman, according to the journal International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health: Researchers found that “Walking up and down stairs at home reduces health risk at low cost for the individual.”

6. Your stress levels go down

Since climbing the stairs requires more energy than walking on flat surfaces, it also helps to release more endorphins. As a result, Dr. Grifka says that walking up and down stairs can help lower stress levels. “Walking the stairs can provide you some peace of mind and time to reflect on challenges that you have had during the day,” he says. “Also, the sense of accomplishment after climbing a flight of stairs or two can improve your self-perception.”

7. Your longevity could increase

According to a 2021 study published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, researchers found that “Climbing more than five flights of stairs at home per day was associated with a lower risk of all‐cause and cancer mortality, compared with those who did not take the stairs.”

But keep in mind…

If you don’t live in a house or apartment building with stairs, or naturally encounter them on your daily commute, you can still get these stair climbing benefits by making a point to choose the stairs over the escalator or elevator when you have the option. Or plan a regular walking route that includes a flight. Or even try doing a stair workout regularly.

Though, know that if you’re not accustomed to taking the stairs, you may feel out of breath when first incorporating the habit into your daily routine. “This is not surprising if you have not done such exercise for a while,” Dr. Grifka says. As your body gets used to the movement, you’ll likely find yourself panting less. “However, ” adds Dr. Grifka, “if the shortness of breath becomes more significant or chest pain occurs, you may want to seek medical attention, just as you would with any exercise.”

Angel Number 444 Is Giving You the Green Light To Chase After Your Wildest Dreams https://www.wellandgood.com/angel-number-444/ Tue, 04 Apr 2023 01:02:03 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1012929 It’s normal to feel worried from time to time. If you’re constantly worried, however, it may be time to refocus on your foundation in an attempt to regain trust in yourself and the process. One such way to do so is by harnessing the power of angel number 444, one of the most interesting angel numbers. To learn why 444 is so powerful, read on to discover its meaning, along with what to do if you see it and how to proceed on dates with the repeating number.

What is the meaning of angel number 4?

The angel number 444 is popular among those who manifest, but before we get into its meaning and why it’s so well received, let’s go over the meaning of the number 4 on its own.

“In numerology, the number 4 represents our foundation, security, organization, and consistency,” says numerologist, astrologist, and tarot reader Vannessa Williams of Beyond Your Sun Sign.

What is the meaning of angel number 444?

Knowing that the number 4 represents a strong foundation and an overall sense of security, it’s not surprising that angel number 444 is regarded as the angel number of protection.

Where some think of this as a shield against all evil, others think about it more linearly. Specifically, Williams says that the angel number 444 offers protection so that we’re able to focus on our foundation and move freely—without fear or all-consuming worry—through our lives. “We are unable to freely express ourselves without a solid foundation and angel number 444 reminds us of that,” she explains.

In that way, numerologist Joy Woodward, author of A Beginner’s Guide to Numerology, shares that she’s always considered angel number 444 to be a reassuring hug from the universe. It’s as if your angels are telling you they’ve got your back while simultaneously assuring you that you’ve got this; keep going. “The number 4 offers a strong foundation to build your dreams upon,” Woodward adds, urging us to practice gratitude and to be unafraid to ask our angels for divine guidance and support.

(Love the idea of all-encompassing protection and want to wear the angel number 444 as a reminder? The Mayfair Group Angel Number Hoodie might pique your interest.)

What To Do if You See Angel Number 444

If you allow it, seeing the angel number 444 can encourage you to lean into the things that make you feel most stable and secure, knowing all the while that the universe is on your side. In that sense, Williams says to think of the angel number 444 as a green light to move forth and create.

“[Four] is the number of support and stability, so it’s about rooting down and taking care of yourself and your life,” Jasmine Wolfe, a numerologist, astrologer, and tarot reader, previously told Well+Good, noting that one way to do so is by honing in on the four areas of stability in your own life: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

Perhaps you’ve been feeling inspired but hesitant (even slightly discouraged) to begin a new workout routine, sign up for therapy, buy that new journal and jot down your thoughts, or lean into a meditation or yoga practice to tune into yourself—if you keep seeing fours, take it as a sign that you are, and you will be, safe exploring these stabilizing practices.

What is the significance of the date 4/4?

Knowing that the number 4 is all about protection and safety, the date April 4 (4/4) is a time when people may feel more eager to explore new ventures, for they know the universe has their back. Need proof? On 4/4/1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft, a first-of-its-kind tech company that we all know today as a leader in computer technology. The universe certainly had their back.

Is Stretching Enough Movement for the Day? https://www.wellandgood.com/is-stretching-considered-exercise/ Mon, 03 Apr 2023 21:00:33 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1041485 Not all of us love getting our sweat on. But with the mental and physical health benefits of movement constantly being hyped, those of us who aren’t exactly gym rats might wonder: What if I just stretched? Would that be “enough”?

According to lululemon Studio trainer Xtina Jensen, who is a certified personal trainer specializing in stretching, barre, boxing, cardio, and strength workouts, it depends.

“Flexibility training absolutely plays a vital component in every exercise program and certainly can be used as a mode of recovery on off days,” she says. “However, as much as we all should have stretching as a regular part of our workout plan, it will serve us best when used in a balanced regimen.”

Is stretching considered exercise?

While many fitness routines incorporate stretching, you’ll often find that stretches account for just eight to 10 minutes at the beginning and end of a workout class or app-led sweat sesh. And when programs do suggest active recovery stretch days, it’s to supplement the strength and cardio workouts that fill the rest of your week.

The reason? Stretching is a beneficial form of movement, but as the single component of a fitness routine, it’s not enough to give you the health benefits that could come from more vigorous activity.

The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that American adults get 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week, or 75 to 150 minutes of high-intensity activity (or a combination), ideally spread throughout the week. They also suggest targeted muscle-strengthening activities two days per week, hitting all the major muscle groups.

Unfortunately, stretching accomplishes neither of those two goals. Of course, any movement is definitely better than no movement! But if you’re looking to really improve your fitness, it’s gonna take more a few daily stretches.

Does it matter if it’s static vs. dynamic stretching?

While dynamic stretching (where you’re moving continuously) is more likely to challenge your muscles and get your blood flowing than static stretching (where you’re stationary), neither is quite enough to cut it as your sole form of movement.

“Most research has shown that combining static and dynamic stretching not only creates more flexibility and mobility, but it can also reduce a person’s risk of injury,” she says. “But you will not find that stretching alone is a great form of exercise.”

In fact, you can even overdo it if you focus solely on stretching every day. “Too much of any one thing is not good for anyone and that same concept certainly applies to stretching,” Jensen says. “Too much stretching can lead to muscle and joint laxity, which in turn can result in injury over time.”

What if it’s an active recovery day?

Generally speaking, an active recovery day is a rest day from a strenuous workout routine such as lifting, HIIT, or race training. “Flexibility training certainly can be used as a mode of recovery on off days,” she says. “Gentle moving is great, and some days may call for something nice and easy on our bodies, such as a stretch class.”

Typically, one to three active recovery days per week is best, so you can dedicate the other days to cardio or strength-focused activities.

What about yoga?

While some people conflate yoga with stretching, anyone who’s taken a serious Vinyasa or Ashtanga class can confirm it’s working a lot more than just your flexibility.

“Yoga has gained exponential numbers in popularity because of it’s a beautiful balance of work that includes both strength and stretch in a harmonious mind-body connected synergy,” Jensen says. Take a restorative class as an active recovery option, or opt for a more power-driven flow as a standalone workout.

Try this energizing yoga flow to get both loose and strong:

Why it’s still important to stretch

Stretching might not be enough movement on its own to keep you feeling your best, but it is vital for moving through life. “Stretching can be used in so many ways and can even help reduce the risk of injury from pattern overuse (such as sitting at the computer for long periods of time resulting in tight hips), help correct muscular imbalance, and even help repair joint dysfunction,” Jensen says.

As for when to stretch, Jensen says to listen to your body. “Everything we feel is a signal, a sign, or a symptom of how we treat our body,” she explains. If you find yourself feeling tight, unsteady, or in pain, it might be time to start stretching.

And if you don’t, your flexibility will surely fade over time. “That silly saying of ‘Use it or lose it’ is true, and it certainly applies to our bodies,” Jensen says. “The body is meant to move, humans are meant to move, and we are meant to move every day in many ways. We are not meant to be still, especially when we are blessed with a body that can move.”

Rain Boots Are Notoriously Uncomfortable—This Pair Is So Good, Even a Podiatrist Swears By Them https://www.wellandgood.com/merry-people-rain-boots/ Sat, 25 Mar 2023 21:00:18 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1038083 Generally speaking, I find rain boots to be quite uncomfortable. But, like denim, pointed-toe pumps, and underwire bras, they serve a purpose, and, as such, they always have a place in my wardrobe. Over the years, I’ve transitioned between the popular tall welly boots of the early 2010s to the mid-calf silhouettes that dominated the mids, and eventually the Chelsea-style boots that became the go-to in the latter end of the decade. In each case, my feet stayed dry, and that was my main goal—but I always hoped for more.

Specifically, I wished that there was a pair of rain boots so durable, comfortable, and warm that they could easily become my everyday wet-weather shoe, even if I had miles of walking to do while wearing them. Now, I’ll admit: It felt like a lofty goal—but then I caught wind of the Merry People Bobbi Rain Boots ($130).

`Merry People is an Australian footwear brand and the Bobbi Rain Boot is one of its best sellers. The waterproof Chelsea boot, which is made of natural rubber, is outfitted with a chunky etched sole for optimal traction and a flexible neoprene lining for added comfort and warmth—and according to the site, it’s even ‘tested for sub-freezing temperatures’ to ensure that feet stay dry and warm throughout wear. Considering the high claims—and the fact that over 9,000 shoppers have awarded the boots a 5-star review—I knew I had to check them out.

From the moment I slipped my feet into these boots, I’ve never looked back at the old silhouettes that fill my closet. Unlike my other, rather shapeless rain boots, the Merry People Bobbi Rain Boot has decent arch support and features a true-to-size fit that easily accommodates even the thickest socks. Best of all, they’re not clunky or stiff like most other rain boots—instead they’re surprisingly cushy—so they didn’t require a break-in period. No, really. I took them on a getaway to the Rocky Mountains mere weeks after receiving them in November of 2022, and they were an absolute delight to explore in. (To clarify: I didn’t hike in them, but I did walk miles in them, through slushy weather and in sub-freezing temps, and all the while my feet stayed perfectly cozy.)

Beyond how well they wear, I love the fact that these boots are sold in 15 colors. Where so many rain boots are sold in black, gray, red, or yellow, the Merry People Bobbi Rain Boot spices things up with bold colors like lime green, hot pink, purple, and teal. And, if you have a little one, you’ll be glad to know that they’re sold in kids’ sizes, too.

But hey, don’t just take my word for them—thousands of other shoppers swear by the colorful gumboots, too.

“Super comfortable and very impressed with the support and fit,” one shopper marvels. “I walked 15 kilometers in Red Hill Victoria—hills, puddles, rugged terrain—and no foot pain whatsoever! I am a podiatrist, so definitely recommending [these] to my clients. Also fabulous to wear on muddy football ovals walking my energetic Labrador. So glad I purchased, wished I had have done it years ago!”

“As a podiatrist, I rarely buy shoes online because not all footwear is true to advertisement or sizing,” podiatrist Julia Day, of Sole Power Podiatry shares in her review on the site. “I decided to take a chance with Merry People and I’m glad I did! True to size and they easily fit my custom orthotics, which I cannot live without. Highly recommend this product. Plus…they are super funky! Buy with confidence.” If you weren’t sold yet, you are now, right?

Longline Bras Offer *Way* More Support Than Regular Bras—Here Are the 14 Best Ones To Shop https://www.wellandgood.com/best-longline-bras/ Thu, 23 Mar 2023 18:00:21 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1035567 If you have boobs, then you know there’s nothing worse than an ill-fitting, unsupportive bra. Perhaps it’s a strapless bra that slips and slides out of place. Maybe it’s a sports bra that wriggles up every time you raise your hands over your head. Or maybe it’s your basic, T-shirt bra that just doesn’t have the same support it once did. Whatever it is, it’s uncomfortable enough to make you want to dump your bras for good.

The good news is, wearing a longline bra can add coverage and comfort when you need it most. Built with an extended waistline, longline bras are often more supportive than their shorter counterparts. And seriously—Be it a strapless, scoop-neck, push-up, or plunge, there’s a longline bra for every style and occasion.

The best longline bras, at a glance:

What is a longline bra?

Longline bras stand out for having a band that’s 2-3 inches wider than your typical bra band, giving them a longer silhouette on your torso. “Since most of the support from a bra comes from its underband, longline bras offer more support compared to regular bras,” says Kathryn Rambo, a bra and lingerie designer at Adore Me. “This makes them [an especially] great option for women with larger busts.”

In addition to offering more bust support, Bare Necessities bra-fit expert, Kristyn Polin, says that longline bras can create the appearance of a smoother waistline, as the longer band helps shape the ribcage. Another benefit of the extended band? It’s built to stay put, which is especially helpful in strapless styles.

Due to the steadfast, supportive nature of longline bras, Jené Luciani Sena, author of The Bra Book: An Intimate Guide to Finding the Right Bra, Shapewear, Swimsuit, and More ($19), says that longline bras began as wedding staples—but they have since poured over into everyday fashion. Nowadays, the crop top-like bras are worn under other garments, as well as on their own. It’s all a matter of personal preference.

What to look for in a longline bra

Longline bras are sold in a variety of styles, including bralettes, wireless, strapless, push-up, and athletic-oriented options. When shopping for one a, there are a number of things you’ll want to consider: What length band do you want? Which will be most comfortable? Do you want underwire support? Do you want molded cups? What about side boning for more definition? Do you prefer pull-on or hook-and-eye silhouettes? Are you craving smooth fabric or detailed lace?

Whatever you’re shopping for, there’s a longline bra for every style and occasion. Shop the best ones, below.

The Lululemon Like a Cloud Longline Bra is easily one of the most comfortable sports bras/tops I’ve ever worn. TL;DR: They think of everything.

“It’s fabulous for low-impact activities and even lounging around the house,” says Krempa. “I wouldn’t wear it for high-impact stuff, it’s not supportive enough for that. But for walks around the neighborhood, running errand, or even yoga, it does the job.”

The Zodiac Signs That Are Totally Compatible With Aries—And the Signs That Most Definitely Aren’t https://www.wellandgood.com/who-is-aries-compatible-with/ Wed, 22 Mar 2023 13:50:00 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=844085 Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, which explains why Aries traits include often being natural born leaders, exuding dominance, ambition, and a vigor for life—and the potential for risks, rewards, and adventures. Passionate and assertive, people born in Aries have spring birthdays that fall on dates between March 21 and April 19. Because of their bold personalities, Aries will have the most compatibility with signs that also have the same fervor and directness in how they communicate and live their lives.

For Aries, someone who is compatible will appreciate and tolerate their more high-energy and dominant nature.

Yet, all the zodiac signs can find true love and their perfect match, and it’s just a matter of finding the signs one is most compatible with; astrologer Alex Caiola recommends people look to their full chart and examine all aspects of it to get a clearer idea of which signs would make the best partners for them. For Aries, someone who is compatible will appreciate and tolerate their more high-energy and dominant nature. Read on for how Aries gets along with every zodiac sign, in love and friendship.

Key Aries Traits

Ruled by the planet Mars, which has to do with mental and physical drive, Aries is all about action and forward-momentum. Aries’ characteristics reflect this.

“People born under the sign of Aries are ambitious, honest, bold, courageous, daring, creative, friendly, and organizers,” says Emily Newman, psychic reader, spiritual healer, counselor, and astrologer at The Best of Psychic Reader.

Aries are so “fired up” because of their nature, as a zodiac sign within the fire family, which is why they can come off as being extreme or intense in their mannerisms and imaginations, too. Aries is a cardinal sign, which means it’s one of the zodiac’s initiators—if you need something done, call an Aries.

But Aries are also quite optimistic. And while there’s much to love about Aries’ big, positive personality, dreams and goals, they can also be a bit hasty in their actions, decisions and behaviors. It’s not unusual to encounter a heated disagreement with an Aries or to find them to be impulsive or have a short fuse.

This same fire and passion can be seen as a less positive Aries trait by some, though. Aries’ shadow side is that their drive and focus on themselves can come off as selfish. “Aries are also reckless, short-tempered,” says Newman. They can come across as being “egotistical attention seekers,” she adds. “Aries wants to be the center of attention, thus if you are in direct competition with them, they may cause you damage, and are typically stubborn by nature.”

Aries Compatibility in Relationships

Aries and Aries Compatibility

While they’re both fire signs and thus would seem like an excellent match together, the intensity between two Aries can actually be too strong and cause difficulties.

“Aries with Aries means big blast, as both have equal perspectives, and neither will let go, since both want to be able to think and conduct things in the way they desire,” says Newman.

However, because both have a hard time putting their opinions aside and listening to someone else’s ideas and stances, a double Aries partnership can resemble two competitors, rather than unified partners.

“There will be major disputes,” Newman cautions. “Aries performs better when there is someone else to balance and temper the excess associated with the sign, and this is not conceivable between two Aries.”

Aries and Taurus Compatibility

Both Aries and Taurus are obstinate and don’t give up, which makes this fire and earth combo the least compatible despite them being on the cusp of and next to each other in the zodiac calendar. When both parties refuse to compromise or acquiesce for the greater good of their relationship, it can lead to additional disagreements and pent up hostility (which may continue to build with time and never be resolved, unfortunately.)

They also have vastly different outlooks on life: “For Aries, life is an adventure that’s full of chances to be daring and show bravery, and on the other hand, for Taurus, nothing is more important to them than comfort and peace of mind,” says Newman. Tauruses are patient, but dealing with Aries may be too much even for them.

Additionally, Aries is more risk-seeking and spontaneous, whereas Taurus is so conventional in their ways of living and thought and prioritize stability. Aries is a major risk-taker, while Taurus is extra risk-adverse. In this case, these opposites don’t attract.

Aries and Gemini Compatibility

Aries and Gemini, an air sign, can make a great pair because they balance each other out. “Aries is the fire sign, constantly looking for a charming partner who thinks outside the box, whereas Gemini is spontaneous, charismatic, unpredictable, and always looking for a good time,” says Newman.

Since both signs are optimistic and seek thrill and adventure, they’re bound to get along well. Plus, they’re less rigid in structuring their daily lives and like to avoid the mundane as much as possible. With similar lifestyles, Gemini is one of the best signs compatible with Aries and in building a future together where they’re on the same page with goals and the chance to act on any unexpected or spontaneous desires.

“Both have comparable communication skills and work hard to achieve success, and since Aries is headstrong and short-tempered, but Gemini is calm and has a split personality, it makes it easy for Gemini to deal with Aries’ mood swings,” Newman explains.

Aries and Cancer Compatibility

Cancer is a cardinal water sign, whereas Aries is a fire sign so both are direct opponents and will have difficulties getting along and seeing eye-to-eye, particularly in the way they communicate and handle disagreements and tension.

“Both are daring and ambitious, and they both want to win; however, Aries prefers to win the battle in any and all cases,” says Newman, and they won’t seek peace as easily as Cancer does.

And while Cancer does stand firm and like to come out on top, Newman explains that they actually prefer to avoid conflict, when possible; they would rather be protecting and nurturing instead of confronting conflict head-on like Aries.

This combo can be volatile because according to Newman, “Aries’ aggression may overwhelm and intimidate, and thus Cancer will likely withdraw inside a protective shell in response.”

Aries and Leo Compatibility

Leo is also a fire sign, so people born under the zodiac sign of Leo have characteristics comparable to Aries and are thus one of the greatest signs most compatible with Aries lovers.

“Both are driven by achievement and are ambitious; however, Leo is a lion and will not let go of anything that may cause an issue,” says Newman. Luckily, this is usually only for a short period, as they don’t tend to hold grudges. Just they are equally as attention-seeking, bold and fiery, and they love to shine, as the star that lights up any room.

Any argument between Leo and Aries will be big and fiery, and nobody will concede. However, Leo and Aries can diminish competitive feelings together by reshaping and changing their perspectives and attitudes—as well as avoiding direct competition. For example, Leo and Aries probably shouldn’t compete for the same job if they want to avoid conflict.

But Leo’s people skills can also dull Aries sharper edges. “Because they are born leaders, Leos have a greater knowledge of interacting with others,” she says, so they’ll also be direct in communication and know how best to fire others up and take charge, as needed. “As a result, they are the best to handle Aries,” she says—maybe even the winner, among most compatible signs with Aries.

Aries and Virgo Compatibility

Because Aries and Virgo are five signs away from each other in the zodiac, they don’t have much at all in common and therefore aren’t compatible.

An earth sign, Virgo’s personality traits, which include patience and practicality, are pretty much the opposite of Aries key traits.  “Aries is instinctive and fiery and likes beginnings whereas Virgo is methodical, detailed oriented, and has more patience,” astrologer Stephanie Gailing says. Virgo, the final sign of the summer months, is also a mutable sign that goes with the flow—very different from agenda-setting, season-starting Aries.

And while they both share a desire to get things done, Virgo and Aries go about problem solving in completely opposite ways; while Virgo would meticulously consider a problem, Aries would charge in head first.

Aries and Libra Compatibility

Libra is an air sign, whereas Aries is a fire sign, so both do have some opposing characteristics; however, ultimately they complement each other well. This may be due to Libra’s priority for balance and harmony, and so they’re able to deal with Aries’ aggressiveness and argumentative nature better than other signs.

“Libra is a peacemaker and is very understanding, whereas Aries is impatient and stubborn, so Libra can provide all of the assistance that Aries needs to succeed,” says Newman. And Libra will help to calm them down and deflate tension, as well as be a number one supporter for their endeavors and passions.

Libra is a very social sign that values community and seeks to create harmony within groups of their peers, family and co-workers; they may help Aries maintain good relationships with others. And if Aries is too fired up, feisty and abrasive during an argument, having Libra by their side can help mitigate the negative energy and intensity of the situation and bring about peace.

Aries and Scorpio Compatibility

Because Aries and Scorpio are five signs away from each other in the zodiac, on paper they should be totally incompatible. However, sparks could fly between Aries and Scorpio because they share similar traits, according to astrologer Alexandria Lettman. They share Mars as their ruling planet, which lends both signs their passion, bravery, loyalty, and assertiveness.

However, Scorpio’s status as a water sign lends it some traits that are in more direct opposition to Aries.  Water signs are known to be emotional, sensitive, and to enjoy deep conversations and thoughts. While Scorpio and Aries share many of the same traits, Scorpio does have this deep, sensitive need to process their emotions internally that Aries doesn’t share. Aries works through its problems more externally, which could create tension.

This push-pull can be a great pairing, or something that flames out. “I could see instances where it could really work, but then also where it completely wouldn’t,” Lettman says.

Aries and Sagittarius Compatibility

Aries and Sagittarius could be a really powerful love match. Both fire signs, Sagittarius and Aries share an active spirit and passion for life. They’re both optimistic and love fun and adventure, too.

It would never be a dull day with Sagittarius and Aries. “They’re the type of people who could keep the spark alive for a long time,” Lettman says. “They’re always kind of building each other up and expanding their horizons together.”

Aries and Capricorn Compatibility

These two powerful signs, Aries and Capricorn, can overwhelm each other romantically but may make good friends.

Both cardinal signs that start their seasons (Capricorn winter, Aries spring), Capricorn and Aries square each other, which means there is tension and that this can be a tricky pairing, according to Lettman. They are both ambitious and determined, but approach their goals in opposite ways: Capricorn, symbolized by the mountain goat, is all about a steady and long climb to achievement, while Aries is about quick action.

While this dynamic may be too much for a romantic relationship, it could make for a rewarding and exciting friendship because Aries and Capricorn could use their combined determination to accomplish shared goals. “Maybe it’s not so much romantic, but in a friendship between Aries and Capricorn nobody is getting in their way because they’re like the queen bees,” she adds.

Aries and Aquarius Compatibility

Aries and Aquarius also has potential to be a powerful and well-balanced love match. A fixed air sign, Aquarius falls in the middle of the winter season and shares Aries’ intelligence and independence.

If Aries lets them, Aquarians could use their stamina and intelligence to help Aries execute their big ideas and dreams. Because Aries may not think everything through, Lettman says, Aquarius can help project-manage to make sure ideas actually get off the ground. “Aquarius would be like, fun idea, but let’s prepare,” Lettman says. In turn, Aries’ boldness and confidence can help Aquarius get out of its own way.

These two signs also share a fierce desire for independence and like to march to the beat of their own drums. “Aquarius is very eccentric and they don’t mind isolating themselves from people who don’t understand them,” she adds. “[Aries and Aquarius] are the two who could stick together away from the crowd.”

One caveat is that neither sign is known for its emotional availability, so Aquarius and Aries would have to work to bridge that gap.

Aries and Pisces Compatibility

Because these signs are pretty much as different as two can be, Pisces and Aries aren’t compatible. Aries signals the beginning of a new year in the zodiac while Pisces represents the year coming to a close; they can share a cusp. A cardinal fire sign, Aries’ fiery forwardness and self-starter energy could come across as inconsiderate or rude to Pisces, a mutable water sign that responds to the feelings and actions of others and is all about emotional depth. Aries also loves discussions and arguments, but getting that fired up is a major turnoff for Pisces because they’re very forgiving and accommodating.

“A Pisces would feel like an Aries is super uncaring, abrasive and aggressive because they would talk over them,” Lettman says. “[Pisces] might be misconstruing Aries’ passionate, driven, intense energy for being completely uninterested.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Which zodiac sign is most compatible with Aries?

Aries is most attracted to signs “who have a similar zest and freshness in spirit,” Gailing says. They get along best with those who move through the world with passion first, rather than pragmatism.

Because of this, an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) could really play off Aries’ fiery energy. However, the devil is in the details. Additionally, Libra is a great match for Aries because of how they’d balance each other out.

The fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) gravitate toward each other because they share the same vibe. However, Gailing warns that there can be too much of a good thing because two overly fiery people “may burn out their flames.” This is especially true if Aries has a lot of fiery signs in their other chart placements.

Which zodiac sign is least compatible with Aries?

In general, a sign is least compatible with the sign that is five signs away from it in the zodiac because that means they don’t share common ground. In Aries’ case, these are Scorpio and Virgo; however, as mentioned above, Scorpio and Aries do share some common traits, which could mean they would work out. Be sure to look at other alignments on your natal chart besides your sun sign for a better idea of the least compatible signs with Aries.

Purely in terms of traits and demeanor, the astrologers say the least compatible signs with Aries are Aries, Taurus, and Cancer.

Soft, Bouncy, and Super Lightweight, the Adidas Ultraboost Light Is My New Favorite Running Shoe https://www.wellandgood.com/adidas-ultraboost-light-review/ Tue, 21 Mar 2023 14:00:19 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1033585 Part of being a fitness writer means that I get to try on shoes for a living. No matter how many new pairs I try, though, the Adidas Ultraboost 21 ($109+) continues to hold rank amongst my top five favorite sneakers. The reason? They’re breathable, compressive, cushioned, and comfortable, making them a joy to wear.

These sneaks have been in my regular rotation for the past two years. But all along, I’ve had one main complaint: Their 11-ounce weight makes them heavier and more cumbersome to run in, which feels counterintuitive considering that’s their purpose. Clearly the folks at Adidas agree because the brand just dropped its latest Ultraboost iteration: The Ultraboost Light ($190).

TL;DR: From the moment I scooped them out of the box, I was wowed by the feather-light weight; mere steps after the moment I first put them on, they replaced the Ultraboost 21s in my top picks.

Adidas Ultraboost Light — $190.00

Available sizes: 5-12 in half sizes
Colors: 8
Midsole drop: 10 mm
Weight: 9.2 ounces

My honest review of the Adidas Ultraboost Light

Details of the new design

The Adidas Ultraboost Light is, as the name implies, the lightest-weight Ultraboost ever. Looking at the shoes, though, you wouldn’t know it. Like the many iterations prior, the Ultraboost Light features the signature chunky heel and a 10 millimeter heel-toe drop. What sets it apart, though, is that the midsole is made of ultra-lightweight BOOST foam that features a molecule design, which effectively cuts the weight of the shoe by a couple of ounces.

Beyond the updated BOOST midsole, the Adidas Ultraboost Light is very similar to the Ultraboost 21 (and the Ultraboost 22). The shoes are outfitted with the classic knit uppers that shoppers have come to know, love, and expect of the brand, and the outsoles continue to offer stellar traction in both dry and wet conditions.

What it’s like to actually wear them

From the moment I first laid hands on these, I couldn’t wait to put them on my feet. While I normally just slip in and out of my Ultraboost 21s with ease, I found that Ultraboost Lights to be a bit snugger, with a narrower heel, so I had to actually unlace them and finagle my feet inside. (After doing that just one time, though, the fit was set and I could easily slip them off and on without unlacing.)

While the compression and stability of the shoe feels practically identical to the Ultraboost 21s, the Ultraboost Lights are much, well, lighter. While shaving a couple of ounces may not seem like a big deal, I genuinely felt like I could walk and jog further in these shoes, as well as actually enjoyably run in them. Part of that is likely due to the new and improved energy point in the shoe’s sole, which is designed to be more responsive, ultimately lending to more effortless forward propulsion.

Why I love them—and what could make them even better

After wearing the Adidas Ultraboost Lights for a week—testing them on the sidewalk, on the treadmill, at the gym, and while out and about running errands—I can confidently say that these shoes are worth every penny. My favorite thing about them is their versatility. While they’re specifically designed as a running shoe, I consider them to be one of the best everyday sneakers on the market. If you like an athletic look, tons of cushion, and a form-fitting silhouette, these shoes are really hard to beat.

The only thing that could make them better in my book is if they came in more exciting colorways, like pink, purple, or royal blue. Knowing Adidas, though, it’s only a matter of time before more colors debut.

I Tried Olaplex Dry Shampoo on My Fine, Oily Hair 3 Days Post-Wash, and the Before-and-After Photos Are Genuinely Jaw-Dropping https://www.wellandgood.com/olaplex-dry-shampoo/ Fri, 17 Mar 2023 19:30:01 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1034161 I have super fine hair, and when I was in high school and college, the only way to keep it from looking like an oil slick was by washing it every single day. Once I started getting my hair color treated, though, that was no longer an option. (TL;DR: red dye fades the fastest and frequent shampooing only speeds up the process.) Thankfully, I discovered dry shampoo and have been hooked for nearly a decade.

Like all beauty categories, though, not all dry shampoos are created equally, so I’m always up for trying the latest and greatest formulas to see if a breakthrough has been made. Because of this, I recently added the new Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo ($30) to my hair-care routine.

I was intrigued by the Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo because only is it designed to absorb excess oil and erase the appearance of sweaty strands, but it’s also meant to detox the scalp in the process—which is notable because dry shampoos often leave behind heavy residue that can make the scalp feel itchy. Plus, this product buildup can trap dirt and oil underneath it, which can make your hair look dirty faster than it typically would.

While the claims for this dry shampoo definitely seem lofty, the formula is built to deliver the  results. It’s got ultra-fine micro starch sourced from brown rice to absorb oil (which, obviously is the main job of any good dry shampoo), plus antioxidant-rich rambutan seed extract to soothe and detoxify the scalp. The real icing on the cake, though, is that it also contains the brand’s signature OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology, so it strengthens strands while you wear it. Above all, the dry shampoo promises to extend the time between washes, and for me, it did.

The Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo launched on January 31 and after trying it for a few weeks, I’ve found that it’s a reliable dry shampoo for quick sprucing. While it doesn’t make my hair look 100% refreshed (TBH: none fully do—such is the life of a fine haired woman), it works well to absorb excess oil at the roots without making my hair look super dry (or feel super dirty), which has allowed me to stretch the time between my washes. It also doesn’t feel itchy at all in the process. With this dry shampoo in tow, I can revamp my second-day hair to the point that it looks clean enough to wear down; by day three, my hair looks rough, but with this dry shampoo, enough oil is absorbed that I can smooth it back into a slick bun and call it a day. And hey, that works for me.

One thing I will note, though, is that this dry shampoo claims to leave no white residue. While that’s true if you spray from 10 inches away (which is what stylists recommend), any closer and your hair will look like it’s been inundated with a baby powder bomb. Awful as it sounds, though, I find that spraying up close is the only way to get truly stellar results (at least on my fine red hair), as spritzing from a distance allows the product to disperse more. Thankfully, even when I did spray up close, I was able to easily brush the ultra-fine starch through, so my hair didn’t look muted or dull as a result. That said, if you have super dark hair, it’s probably best to follow the distance directions to a tee. FWIW, our senior beauty editor who has dark, thick hair, has also been testing the shampoo, and has seen great results with barely any residue left behind. One last pro tip? Be sure to brush the dry shampoo through your strands (instead of letting it sit on top of your scalp) for best results.

‘I’m a Therapist, and Here Are 7 Products That Can Help You Overcome Social Anxiety’ https://www.wellandgood.com/grounding-products-for-social-anxiety/ Wed, 15 Mar 2023 18:00:06 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1032757 Have you ever walked into a room full of people, including strangers and people you know, only to feel stuck in your head about how you’re being perceived? It’s a common occurrence and it’s a key indicator of social anxiety. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 12 percent of U.S. adults experience social anxiety at some point in their lives. While 12 percent might not seem like a lot of people, keep in mind that that correlates to roughly 40 million people across the country. Suffice to say, you’re not alone. Of course, simply knowing that doesn’t always help. What can, though, is knowing how to cope with social anxiety and having a quiver of tools to do so.

What is social anxiety?

Before diving into how to cope with social anxiety, let’s brush up on what it is, exactly. “Social anxiety is persistent fear or distress experienced during everyday social situations and/or activities where there is a performance expectation (like giving a speech, playing an instrument, or participating in a sport),” explains Ellie Mental Health therapist Arminda Brooks, MSW, LICSW.

Of course, social anxiety can also come into play in situations like parties, dating, and even low-key group hangs. It’s all about how a person experiences the disorder. “Social anxiety disorder is experienced when a person is fearful of the scrutiny, judgment, or evaluation that can come with social interactions,” Real therapist and clinical content manager, Julia Jarrold, LCSW, says. “It can gravely impact a person’s ability to do the things that so many of us take for granted, such as making small talk in line at the store, getting dinner with a group of friends, using a public restroom, asking questions in a classroom or learning setting, and dating. ”

When a person experiences social anxiety, it’s all too easy to become consumed by limiting thoughts. With this in mind, Brooks and Jarrold both emphasize the importance of grounding during triggering events.“When anxiety is heightened, I recommend focusing on grounding rather than pushing back on the anxious thoughts,” Brooks explains. “Why? Because arguing with anxiety in the moment tends to give it more immediate power. Instead of fighting anxious internal messaging, I recommend that people give themselves permission to ride the wave. Acknowledge the anxiety, accept it as part of the present moment, and then redirect your focus away from the anxiety.”

Jarrold tacks onto this, noting that whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed by social anxiety, using grounding techniques can bring you out of an anxiety spiral and into the present moment.

7 products to help you cope with social anxiety

Apollo Neuro, Apollo Wearable — $349.00

One way to get grounded during a bout of social anxiety is with the Apollo Wearable. The non-invasive, touch therapy wearable connects to an app to address common stressors, all in an attempt to calm the nervous system. It does so by emitting gentle vibrations in various patterns ranging from five minutes to two hours, all of which can be adjusted in the app. So, if you find yourself starting to get nervous in a social situation, you can simply step away and tune in to your device, which can be worn on your wrist, ankle, chest, or hip.

“Social anxiety can present differently for all of us and it’s really all about finding what feels best for you,” Jarrold admits. “One of the many tips in my toolbelt for social anxiety is to find ways to slow down and give myself breaks when I am socializing.” Her go-to method? A quick bathroom break—even if she doesn’t actually have to go. The Apollo wearable listens to your body and gives you the subtle reminder to do just that.

“Taking the break allows me to have a few slowed moments that can help me to connect to what I am wanting and needing in that setting,” she explains. “Sometimes when I am taking a socialization break, I realize that I actually want to leave the event where I am in attendance, so I leave; [other times] I realize that I am enjoying myself or that I feel like I am over-sharing with someone from a place of nervousness, so then I return to the space with a bit more control than I felt before I took that break.”

Presently, Gold Anxiety Bracelet — $58.00

Arguably a bit more fashionable are Presently’s anxiety bracelets, which double as chic jewelry and act as a small reminder to keep you grounded in anxious situations. Founded by two sisters who both were diagnosed with OCD, the trendy bracelets are designed to help people manage uncomfortable thoughts and feelings as they’re happening. Engraved with affirmations like “brave the uncomfortable” and “it’s okay to feel how I feel”, they’re like having a little cheerleader on your wrist and are dainty enough for everyday wear.

Real, App Membership — $24.00

Sometimes grounding on your own isn’t enough to catapult yourself out of a social anxiety spiral. Thankfully, apps like Real (which is available on iOS and Android) exist to provide on-demand support. Real is a mental health platform that connects users with therapist-designed and led programs, including grounding techniques, coping tools, and group therapy, to create a sense of calm. With Moments, users can spend five minutes or less tapping into their thoughts and emotions to feel better in their present circumstances. Best of all, this revolutionary mental health service is just $24 per month, making it a fraction of the cost of other therapy solutions.

Therapy Notebooks, The Anti-Anxiety Notebook — $38.00

Another great way to cope with social anxiety? Journal about it after the fact. “Journaling can be helpful to increase awareness, but if someone is going to explore the specific circumstances surrounding an increased intensity in anxiety, I recommend waiting until after the fact to journal about it,” Brooks shares. “Once the immediate anxiety level has receded a bit, it can be helpful to ‘talk back’ to the anxiety. This could be viewed as a reality check—exploring the negative thinking patterns that may have taken over during the experience of heightened anxiety (often messages like ‘I can’t do anything right’ or ‘everyone hates me’), and writing out evidence against those thought-traps—maybe describing instances when those negative thoughts did not hold true, or exploring alternative thoughts.”

While any journal can work for such a practice, we’re particularly fond of the Anti-Anxiety Notebook from Therapy Notebooks, which was created by real therapists and is rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy, aka, CBT. It’s effectively a guidebook to pinpointing what triggers anxious thoughts with space to journal through the feelings surrounding them and exercises on how to cope in the future.

Lamare, Habit Tracker Calendar — $17.00

After you come out of a social anxiety spiral, think about what worked. Additionally, think about what habits help prevent a surge of social anxiety in the first place.“Taking notes on what has worked to support your nervous system and experience of anxiety in the past, whether it is social anxiety or not, can be a valuable starting place,” Jarrols says. “For example, if I know that daily movement helps my anxiety, that may mean that on days where I am expecting to have to socialize and can feel my experience of social anxiety surging, I might prioritize movement. Or if I know that I have a grounding or breath work practice that I rely on when my anxiety presents in panic attacks, it might be helpful to utilize one of those same exercises before, and perhaps even during, a social engagement.”

To keep track of your habits in plain view, hang the Lamare Habit Tracker Calendar on your wall. It has space to track 10 daily habits, 10 weekly habits, and five monthly habits. By making it more visual, you’ll be able to easily assess how you show up for yourself each and every day.

Swig Life, Oh Happy Day 22 oz. Tumbler — $43.00

Expanding on the idea of grounding, Brooks says that tapping into your five senses can be immensely helpful when trying to get through a bout of social anxiety. “Being intentional about checking in with your senses can help with resetting your focus away from the anxiety,” she explains. “Prompting yourself to identify something you can see, something you can hear, something you can touch, something you can smell, and something you can taste can support this mental redirection.”

To ensure you always have something you can refocus on, consider adding a pretty tumbler to your social anxiety toolbox. While it may sound silly, a smooth, colorful, stainless steel tumbler, like the Swig Oh Happy Day Tumbler, will give you something to feel, look at, listen to, and taste. And, depending on what you fill it with, something to smell, too. (Is this an excuse to add another water bottle to your collection? Perhaps. But it never hurts to be more hydrated.)

Loop, App Membership — $15.00

Another app that Jarrold recommends is Loop. According to the site, “Loop helps you overcome social anxiety by giving you tools to practice exposure therapy safely, along with the support of a community of mental health professionals and peers.” So, if you find yourself spiraling, you can text with mental health professionals to overcome the situation. In doing so, you’ll learn more about your triggers and what makes you feel safe and supported in such instances.

What’s especially great about the Loop app is that it helps determine the type of social anxiety a user has, if any at all. After all, social anxiety is often confused with shyness.

“It’s important to create a distinction between social anxiety and shyness and social anxiety and being an introvert, because though they can go hand in hand, they are markedly different,” Jarrold says. “Shyness is a personality trait about how we show up socially and interact, while social anxiety is really about that component of fear and discomfort that can come from the potential of judgment.” Meanwhile, being introverted is all about the energy required to interact.

Keep in mind

While these tips, products, and apps can help navigate social anxiety, they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution. “While some people may find the organization of Calm, Headspace, or 10% Happier [all of which provided guided meditation options] to be helpful with grounding, others might respond better to less structured supports; Cosmic Kids Zen Den and GoNoodle are free online sources of mindfulness and meditation videos geared toward kids. These options can be extremely helpful for some individuals,” Brooks says. “Others may find that running, going for walks, painting, playing an instrument, cooking, or reading provides relief.” The point is, there are many, many ways to cope with social anxiety. The most important thing is to find out what works best for you—and to be kind to yourself in the process.

And remember: Having anxiety doesn’t mean you’re broken. “Anxiety is natural and essential for survival; it helps us recognize and avoid threats,” Brooks says. “Sometimes our anxiety-defense-system goes into overdrive and starts interfering with our sense of well-being and with our daily functioning. It can start seeing threats everywhere, and keep us in hyper-alert mode longer than necessary, or in response to non-threatening situations.” That’s when coping strategies come into play. However, if nothing seems to be helping, reaching out to a mental health professional may be your best next step.

The Highest-Rated, Shopper-Approved Foot Creams on Amazon That’ll Give You Soft, Sandal-Ready Feet Overnight https://www.wellandgood.com/highest-rated-foot-creams-amazon/ Sun, 12 Mar 2023 15:00:28 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1031129 We spend so much time thinking about how we can make the skin on our face, neck, and chest look and feel its best that we often overlook other areas of the body that could really use a little extra TLC. Cough, cough: Our feet. Sure, we might make time for the occasional pedicure, but you wouldn’t get a facial once a month and neglect your skin-care routine in the interim would you? The same should be true of your feet—and especially with warm weather on the horizon (which means…sandals!).

Which is why today we’re going to help you pick out a foot cream. To streamline the process, we focused solely on the highest-rated foot creams on Amazon. After all, once you understand just how impactful a foot cream could be, you’ll want to get your hands on one as fast as possible.

The highest-rated foot creams on Amazon, at a glance

Why are foot creams necessary?

Our feet take the brunt of our activity. Because of this—and because most of us don’t give our tootsies that daily TLC they deserve, dry, thick skin and even calluses can form. According to Dr. Jodi LoGerfo, who is a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Family Nurse Practitioner certified in Family Medicine and Dermatology, foot creams can help.

What to look for in a foot cream

According to LoGerfo, effective foot creams contain urea, salicylic acid, and/or alpha hydroxy acids. “Urea is used topically to treat skin dryness and itching,” she explains. “It is also used to soften thick, callused skin, like on the feet.” Additionally, urea has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, so it can help soothe irritation and even keep foot odor at bay.

Meanwhile salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acids can be super helpful in sloughing away built-up dead skin cells which could be making your feet look more Corpse Bride and less red carpet chic.

“Salicylic acid is an exfoliant that loosens up and unglues the cells of the epidermis, allowing skin cells to be sloughed off, encouraging new cells to be produced. It is the most common and popular BHA,” LoGerfo says. “Salicylic acid is a keratolytic medication, [meaning] it breaks down the outer layer of skin, softening the keratin.”

AHAs like lactic and glycolic acid work similarly but are known to be more gentle than BHAs. “Alpha hydroxy acids are water soluble acids made from fruit or milk sugars,” LoGerfo explains. “They are used as peeling agents to help to exfoliate your skin, removing the outer layer of the epidermis. They make skin smoother which is super helpful for feet.”

Now that you’re up to speed, let’s chat top-rated foot creams, shall we?

O'Keeffe's, Healthy Feet Foot Cream for Extremely Dry, Cracked Feet — $9.00

This fan-favorite, urea-infused foot cream can be purchased in packs of one, two, four, six, or 12 cans—and as soon as you see how well it works, you may want to pick the latter to ensure you’re always stocked up.

One of the 56,000+ shoppers to give it a 5-star review writes, “I’ve been struggling with dry, semi cracked heels for a couple of years. This is despite regular moisturizing pedicures. I bought an expensive cream for about $30 and it didn’t really work. Mind you, I’ve never really worn lotion because I don’t like scented lotions or the greasy feeling. So the bottle went to waste. Fast forward to now, with summer around the corner and my feet not getting any better I figured I’d try something new. In comes O’Keeffe’s. In a matter of three days I can no longer see the cracks and my heels feel softer. The product glides on and soaks in, no greasy feel. It’s also unscented. The product works amazingly and the price point is great. I’ll continue to use and buy. Thank you O’Keeffe’s.”

PurOrganica, Urea 40% Foot Cream — $16.00

Sold individually and in sets of three, the PurOrganica Urea 40% Foot Cream is beloved by over 18,000 Amazon shoppers for its ability to tackle thick, cracked heels and soles.

“I went to my dermatologist a week before I started using this because my heels were cracking so bad they would start bleeding,” one shopper reveals. “I thought maybe it was some kind of athlete’s foot, it wasn’t. she said that it was severe callus and I probably walked around without socks on (I work from home so she is correct). She suggested I find a lotion with high amounts of urea and use it once a day and wear socks. I did just that. A week later and my cracked heels are all but completely healed up. I’m really impressed. It works. This stuff actually works. And it smells really nice.”

gold bond
Gold Bond, Softening Foot Cream — $6.00

Tired of dry, cracked tootsies? So were over 18,000 Amazon shoppers when they discovered the Gold Bond Softening Foot Cream and promptly awarded it a 5-star review. With urea at the helm, this jojoba oil and shea butter-based foot cream nixes itching and softens soles for a shockingly smooth end result.

“It doesn’t look glamorous on your vanity and it doesn’t feel luxurious to use, but it works,” one shopper exclaims. “I started applying it after showers and before socks and it only took three days to feel a difference.”

ebanel
Ebanel, Urea Cream 40% Plus Salicylic Acid — $16.00

While the packaging of the Ebanel Urea Cream admittedly leaves a lot to be desired (in that it almost doesn’t look legit), over 11,000 shoppers swear that it’s been their feet’s saving grace. “I have struggled with extremely cracked/dry heels and skin on my feet,” one shopper reveals. “I noticed a huge improvement in as little as two applications (two nights in a row). My feet are so smooth and moisturized it looks as if I have a fresh pedicure. You have a customer for life!”

Bonus: While marketed as a foot cream, shoppers reveal that the Ebanel Urea Cream 40% Plus Salicylic Acid works well for keratosis pilaris, too.

kerasal
Kerasal Intensive Foot Repair Ointment — $10.00

While not technically a cream, the salicylic acid-infused Kerasal Intensive Foot Repair Ointment, which is sold on its own, as well as in 2-packs and sets with gel heel pads, has been praised for its ability to rehab even the most brutally cracked heels. “Since turning 30, my heels have become cracked and dry and sometimes painful at certain points,” says one of more than 30,000 5-star reviewers. “I have tried so many options… Vaseline, Aquaphor, Working Hands, body butter… This is the best yet. It seriously can help visibility improve the skin on your feet overnight. I thought that was just marketing BS, but it’s true. I am very diligent with my applications though. I recommend putting it on right after a shower and then [putting] socks on, and also right before bed with a fresh pair of socks.”

amlactin
AmLactin, Foot Repair Foot Cream Therapy — $10.00

For a gentler approach to your foot rehabilitation, consider the AmLactin Foot Repair Foot Cream Therapy, which is adored by over 6,000 Amazon shoppers. This fragrance-free lactic acid-infused foot cream softens dry soles without making them feel slippery in the process.

This stuff is the bombdiggity! I ordered on a friend’s recommendation for extremely dry, cracked heels that nothing else really helped. This stuff has been amazing! I’ve only used it for two days and am already seeing a big difference. I have either bathed or soaked my feet prior to use both days and have applied morning and evening. Coincidentally, I noticed my fingers were extremely soft after applying the cream to my feet, even having washed my hands after. I’m going to start applying it to my hands, too, once a day. I noticed others weren’t thrilled with the odor, but honestly, I haven’t noticed anything overpowering or that made me even really take note of a bad smell.”

dr. scholls
Dr. Scholl's, Cracked Heel Repair Balm — $7.00

For a more travel-friendly option, check out the Dr. Scholl’s Cracked Heel Repair Balm. Urea, shea butter, epsom salt, and essential oils work together to soften and soothe dry, cracked heels on the spot.

“Look, I have horribly dry and cracked heels. I’ve had cracked heels so bad, I could barely walk…This stuff is like magic. I’ve used it nightly for a week and it’s amazing. I wish I had a before picture so I could show just how great one week of using it has already helped. Seriously, 5 stars! I’m looking forward to flip-flops and even thinking of taking pictures of my feet! But, for real, get you some if your feet are dry, at all.”

8 Solid Perfumes That Smell Better Than Their Spray Counterparts (and Won’t Ever Spill in Your Purse) https://www.wellandgood.com/best-solid-perfumes/ Wed, 08 Mar 2023 14:00:36 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1029265 ICYMI: Solid perfume is having a moment. While the wax-based fragrance is nothing new in terms of innovation, beauty buffs are realizing the intimate allure of solid scents thanks to their TSA-friendly forms and, in some cases, skin-nourishing benefits. So much so, in fact, that the term, “solid perfume recipe” has amassed over 7 million views on TikTok.

While beauty DIYs are on still on the rise since the pandemic, you don’t have to turn your kitchen into a chemistry lab to get your own delicious-smelling solid perfume. Albeit harder to find than traditional liquid fragrance, many brands do sell solid options that are just as good, if not better, than their spray counterparts. And, not to mention, they won’t ever spill in your purse. Imagine that…

What is solid perfume?

Solid perfume is exactly as it sounds: It’s the solid form of a fragrance. “Solid perfumes are a fine fragrance blended into an oil or wax base,” says Lee Howes, who leads the perfume category at Lush.

Glossier’s Director of Packaging and Product Development, Emily Trillaud, adds that solid perfumes aren’t made with alcohol, which may be more appealing to some shoppers. “Solid perfume is created by melting down waxes and/or butters, blending them directly with the fragrance oil, and cooling the mixture back to a solid state,” she explains. “They are similar in consistency to a solid lotion bar or a lip balm.”

While solid perfume is having a resurgence thanks to its pocket-, purse-, and travel-friendly design, Trillaud reminds us that it’s not a new concept. “While it may sound novel, this fragrance format has been around for centuries, and is [just] experiencing a renaissance in popularity as of late,” she explains. Despite more DIY formulators hopping on the bandwagon of solid perfume, many big-name brands have yet to venture into the category and some, like Le Labo, have actually pulled out of it altogether.

Is solid or spray perfume better?

Like so many things, it’s subjective. “It depends on what the wearer is looking for from their fragrance,” Trillaud says. “Is longevity important? Is discretion important? Sillage? Portability? They are incredibly different formats, each with their own set of strengths.”

Where classic perfumes, complete with an alcohol-based formulation and an atomizer, allow for a scent trail (aka, the waft you get when someone walks by), Trillaud says that solid perfumes are more intimate. “The anhydrous wax base of a solid perfume quite literally melts into skin on application and holds the fragrance close, almost like it’s a part of you,” she explains. “Instead of being surrounded by a cloud of scent like a traditional atomizer perfume, you get friendly reminders throughout the day when you catch a whiff of your wrist.”

This doesn’t mean a fragrance stick or balm won’t be smelled by passerbys—you’ll just have to work a little harder than you would spritzing a spray. To get the most out of your solid perfume, Howes suggests warming the surface where you want to you put it with your finger to melt the oils and then applying it onto your skin.“We recommend applying to your pulse points—your neck, just behind the ears, your wrists, all the usual places to apply perfume—where the warmth of your skin will allow the fragrance to be slowly released,” Howes says.

Now, if you’re wondering which is better for travel, there’s no comparison. “Solid perfumes are perfect for travel because of their compact nature and their leak-proof non-liquid base,” Trillaud says.

8 solid perfumes to throw in your purse ASAP

Glossier, You Solid — $30.00

Smells like: You—The scent is designed to smell a little different on everyone, putting the “personal” in “personal fragrance.”

The Glossier You Solid is the most popular solid perfume on the market, by a long shot. The castor oil- and synthetic beeswax-based fragrance is infused with warm, woody ambrette seed, musky ambrox, bright, spicy pink pepper, and powdery, floral iris. It’s a solid perfume that’s designed to play with the wearer’s natural chemistry to create a scent that’s uniquely you (hence the name)—and it’s earned over 6 million views on TikTok for that very reason. It’s also a more sustainable option since the compact case can be refilled over and over again. (The brand sells refills separately for $20.)

Diptyque, Philosykos Solid Perfume — $68.00

Smells like: A grove of Mediterranean fig trees.

The Diptyque Philosykos Solid Perfume comes in the prettiest little compact illustrated with fig trees as a nod to the name of the scent. The synthetic wax-based solid perfume features notes of fig leaves, fig-tree sap, fig-tree wood, and black pepper, making for a woody, aromatic appeal. While the Diptyque Philosykos Solid Perfume is the most popular scent from the brand, shoppers can five other popular fragrances, all of which are available in refills for $40 each.

Derek Lam 10 Crosby, 2 AM Kiss — $19.00

Smells like: Warm, salted caramel.

Derek Lam’s 10 Crosby perfumes have been a fan-favorite since debuting in 2017 and were directly inspired by the sights and sounds of Lam’s favorite New York City Street. The sticks are sold in five scents, (Blackout, Rain Day, Drunk on Youth, Silent Street, and 2 AM Kiss) each formulated to invoke the feelings of the very scenes they were named after.  While each scent has its perks, 2 AM Kiss remains the fan-fave, with its spicy notes and hints of amber and fig, which together give it a warm, woodsy profile.

Lush, Lord of Misrule — $17.00

Smells like: Musky patchouli with notes of black pepper and vanilla.

Lush is a one-stop shop for solid perfumes as almost all of their scents are sold in solid form. Of the 12 scents offered, the mischievous Lord of Misrule is a top pick thanks to its sweet, peppery profile. It’s also nourishing on skin, thanks to a blend of jojoba oil, castor oil, and safe synthetics that won’t irritate or disrupt your skin barrier. It’s extremely compact, but does come in a recycled glass jar, so it’s possible to shatter it if not careful.

Givenchy, Irresistible Eau de Parfum Solid Perfume — $40.00

Smells like: A  summer garden ripe with fresh flowers and fruit.

If you’re looking for a perfume with serious portability (that won’t get your fingers dirty at that,) then give the Givenchy Irresistible Eau de Parfum Solid Perfume a try. Shaped similarly to a lipstick, the solid scent features a fruity, floral profile with hints of rose, pear, and ambrette. The case alone is worth adding one to your cart and makes it easy to throw into your purse or carry-on bag when you’re on the go and want to zhuzh up your signature scent. Just pop off the lid and swipe on your wrists, neck, or collarbone.

Aerin, Joyful Bloom Solid Perfume — $70.00

Smells like: “Happiness incarnate”, according to the website.

The Aerin Joyful Bloom Solid Perfume is another great choice for anyone craving a fruity, floral fragrance. Brimming with notes of bergamot, blackcurrant, rose, pink pepper, and sandalwood, it has a welcoming warmth to it that feels like summer in a compact. And, speaking of the shiny gold compact: It’s gorgeous.

TonyMoly, Bebe Bunny Perfume Bar — $12.00

Smells like: A creamsicle.

If you’re shopping on looks alone, the TONYMOLY Pocket Bunny Perfume Bar is worth considering. The solid perfume tubes are similar in size to a tube of chapstick and feature an adorable cartoon bunny face. As far as scents go, shoppers can choose from “Juicy Bunny” (bergamot and lemon), “Bebe Bunny” (bergamot/orange), and “Bloom Bunny” (amber and musk.) At $12 a stick, you might as well bring home all three rabbits.

Le Sable, Solid Perfume — $59.00

Smells like: Warm, sandy beaches.

This sweet almond oil-based solid perfume is designed to bring images of a beach to mind. With notes of cedarwood, patchouli, and eucalyptus, it’s a warm, sun-drenched fragrance perfect for summer or any time you find yourself looking to embrace a vacation mindset. Doesn’t hurt that the compact makes for a chic accessory, either.

Not Hitting Your Fitness Goals? A Virtual Trainer Can Help—Here’s How To Pick the Right One https://www.wellandgood.com/how-to-choose-an-online-coach-for-your-goals/ Tue, 07 Mar 2023 22:00:11 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1029383 There’s a reason why workout buddies and accountability partners are a thing: It’s helpful to have someone along for the ride when embarking on health and fitness goals. While, yes, you’re absolutely capable of spear-heading your wellness journey on your own, having a person or people in your corner, experiencing it with you and rooting you on in the process, is incredibly helpful when it comes to the long haul. Of course, not everyone is surrounded by folks who want to make healthy lifestyle choices and prioritize time for movement each and every day. Thankfully, online coaches exist to fill the gap.

As encouraging and insightful as online health coaches can be, there are also many, many people out there that claim to be coaches without actually having the credentials. Additionally, every coach has a different approach, so it’s not exactly a quick and easy find. Luckily for us, health coach and Lululemon Studio Trainer, Amanda Robinson, who has 10 years of experience as a fitness coach and trains group fitness classes like barre, cardio, and dance, doesn’t believe in gatekeeping. Ahead, find her top tips for finding the best online coach for your personal fitness goals.

How to choose the right online coach for your fitness goals

1. Start by screening them

To kick off your online health coach search, you’ll want to do your due diligence. In other words: Make sure they’re legit.

“Take a deep dive in their professional materials such as their website and social media channels,” Robinson says. But whatever you do, don’t get caught up on followers. “Having a large following does not always equate to being a qualified coach,” Robinson says. “Rather, consider the trainer’s experience and expertise to ensure they are skilled and knowledgeable to support your needs.” To do so, she says to specifically look for professional certifications from nationally accredited fitness education providers, like the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) or the American Council of Exercise (ACE). An easy work around is using a platform like Future Fitness that only hires certified professional coaches, so there’s no questioning their experience levels.

2. Book a consultation

Since health coaches often operate under a contract or a set fee, you’ll want to ensure that you enjoy their approach before shelling out your cash (or, worse, wasting your time). To do so, book a consultation. “Most online coaches will offer an initial consultation and/or a complimentary trial of their workout program,” Robinson says. If they don’t, be wary.

3. See if you vibe

During your consultation, pay close attention to how your coach instructs and encourages you. “Take advantage of this [session] to get to know the trainer, their personality, coaching style, and specific program offerings,” Robinson says. “During a trial, explore what areas of expertise the coaching program may encompass such as strength training, cardio, mobility, and recovery options which are a great baseline of support.” Additionally, she says that the consultation is a great time to bring up any questions, topics, or concerns you may have to gauge if they’ll be able to meet your expectations.

4. Make sure they offer comprehensive coaching

In addition to confirming the types of programs they cover, Robinson says it’s important to consider how much variety of each the coach can offer. “Ideally, look for a program that offers guidance, as well as varying levels of difficulty as a clear way to progress along your fitness journey,” she says. “A good program will include ways to monitor your progress and offer assistance along the way such as one-on-one coaching sessions, virtual check-ins, measuring metrics, and ongoing resources for support to maintain accountability between sessions.”

On the topic of accountability in between sessions, Robinson adds that any offering that has a community aspect is a major bonus. “Whether it’s a Facebook group, online forum, or digital forum, this will help instill a sense of belonging, camaraderie, as well as provide additional resources for support to celebrate milestones along the way,” she says.

5. Check their reviews

While followers don’t guarantee that an online health coach is worth your while, reviews can give you a pretty good idea. “Reviews will give you an honest gauge of personal experiences others have had working with this coach or online program,” Robinson says.

In addition to checking reviews, she says to tap your friends for feedback. “Your friends will keep it real as to why they prefer a certain workout program,” she says.

Above all…

The most important thing is that you invest your time, money, and trust in a credible fitness professional. “You want to make sure they have the knowledge to help you stay excited, educated, energized, and empowered throughout the workout program to crush your goals,” Robinson says.

In today’s world of fitness tech, there are a number of apps and platforms that offer real-time guidance from professional coaches who can help you not only reach your goals, but crush ’em. You’ll have to use Robinson’s tips to suss out the perfect fit, but the online fitness apps below are a step in the right direction.

This $36 Oversized Corduroy Top Is the Perfect Transitional Shacket, and It Has Over 8K 5-Star Reviews https://www.wellandgood.com/viral-corduroy-button-down-shirt/ Tue, 07 Mar 2023 21:00:48 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1029369 Now that spring is officially in sight, you might be starting to think about your wardrobe and how you can update it in favor of confusing warm-and-cool temps. And we have just the thing!

Allow us to introduce you to the Dokotoo Women’s Corduroy Button-Down Shirt ($36). The 100 percent polyester shacket, which is sold in sizes S to XXL, is soft, breathable, and lightweight, but not so light that you’ll be chilly as the weather adjusts between seasons. This is key, of course. The spring season is notorious for going from giving us a bright and sunny 70-degree day to dumping frigid rain on us the next morning. So, stocking your closet with transitional, versatile garments like this one is a must.

Plus, shoppers just really, really love it. “I love how this corduroy shirt looks and feels! It’s very comfortable! The color is AMAZING!! I wore the shirt out with some jeans, boots & a ball cap!! Yep a definite Wow factor!! I received quite a few compliments that night,” one reviewer exclaims.

Another shopper notes that it’s the perfect piece for layering for all four seasons, writing, “I love this shirt, and to be honest initially I didn’t think I’d like it because of the weight. It’s perfect. I work in a warehouse and the receiving dock is obviously cold in winter because of all the doors always being opened. I wear this almost daily! It’s a great layer, looks cute over hoodies and other long sleeves. It’ll be great in the spring and summer too for a light layer. I want every color now!”

While many shackets exist nowadays, thanks to the surge of the heavy shirt style on TikTok (the term “shacket” has amassed over 198 million views), few are as wildly popular as the Amazon Shacket, which has over 8,000 5-star ratings. In fact, this shacket is so popular that the term “Amazon Shacket” has garnered over 123 million views all on its own.

@laurennicolewhite Amazon shackets >> any other shackets 🤎👌🏼 which one is your favorite? Linked all of them on my Amazon storefront under the list “Shackets” #amazonshacket #amazonfallfashion #amazonfashion #amazonfavorites #fallfashion #shackets ♬ Cutiepie – ⚡

While many people assume that shackets are designated for fall, considering many of them are sold in more rustic color palettes, the Amazon Shacket works for every season. The reason? It’s sold in a whopping 44 colors, including corduroy and plaid options. If you’re looking specifically for suitable spring hues, there are two new colorblock options—one that’s pastel pink, green, gray, and tan, and one that’s pastel blue, pink, green, and tan. Of course, the beige and light green shackets would be great picks for spring, too.

What makes this shacket so special, apart from the wide color selection it’s sold in, is its oversized silhouette that can be worn in a variety of ways. On TikTok, you’ll see people wearing it fully buttoned up like a shirt, as a jacket over band tees and matching athleisure sets, and in some cases (when sized up) as a dress.

Suffice to say, if you’re looking to fill your closet with garments that will work whether it’s warm or chilly, this shacket will make you swoon.

An Esthetician Asked This Shopper What ‘She Was Doing’ Because Her Skin Was Transformed—It’s This French Drugstore Serum https://www.wellandgood.com/avene-retrinal-advanced-correcting-serum/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 22:00:22 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1028849 There’s a reason why so many folks return from their Parisian vacations with checked luggage filled to the brim with drugstore skin care. French beauty products are known for their effective, high-quality formulas that rival luxury US brands for a fraction of the price (one of our writers swears by this $28 cream she says is better than Creme de La Mer). And for the longest time, you needed, bare minimum, a one-way ticket to Paris to get your hands on brands like Avène, Bioderma, La Roche-Posay, Caudalie, and more. Luckily, these brands are now readily available online, so you can shop French drugstore favorites from the comfort of your couch, no trans-Atlantic flight required.

One of our newest favorites? Avène RetrinAL Advanced Correcting Serum ($78)—a drugstore serum so good that an esthetician actually asked a shopper for her skin secrets. The shopper writes in their review, “My esthetician asked what I was doing because my skin was noticeably firmer on my last visit after two months of use.” The moment you know you’re definitely doing something right in your skin-care routine.

What in the formula that’s so special?

It’s formulated with bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, pre-tocopheryl, glycerin, and triglycerides, all of which lend to plump, even, youthful-looking skin. This is why, despite $78 being far from American drugstore price standards, skin-care experts here in the States understand (and support) the hype of this product.

Bakuchiol

“Bakuchiol is an extract of the Babchi plant long used in Ayurvedic medicine,” explains board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hadley King. “It is one of the few retinol alternatives for which studies back up the pseudo-retinol effect of anti-aging and skin brightening.” Where a study in the British Journal of Dermatology found that bakuchiol works just as well as retinol for the reduction of hyperpigmentation, one in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science concluded that the ingredient works markedly well to significantly improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The best part about bakuchiol? King says that it’s much better tolerated than retinol, which is known for potentially causing irritation, especially on more sensitive skin types. “It doesn’t seem to irritate and redden skin the way retinol often does, so it appears to be a gentler option,” she explains.

Hyaluronic acid

While bakuchiol works well to smooth the appearance of skin, hyaluronic acid helps, too. “Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in our skin, where it holds water and helps to keep the skin hydrated, dewy, and plump,” King explains. “It is a powerful humectant that can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, making it a great topical hydrator, as long as either the environment is humid, or you combine it with emollients and occlusives to lock in the hydration so it doesn’t pull water out of the skin.”

Pre-tocopheryl

Then there’s pre-tocopheryl. “pre-tocopheryl is a photostable predecessor/precursor to vitamin E,” says Dr. Jodi LoGerfo, who is a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Family Nurse Practitioner certified in Family Medicine and Dermatology. “It is a commanding antioxidant that guards cells from UV damage and free radicals.” In that way, it’s an ingredient that further helps to combat hyperpigmentation.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide also assists with that. “Niacinamide is involved in the most important cell functions as part of the vitamin B family—[specifically,] nicotinamide seems to have anti-inflammatory, anti-itching, skin-lightening, antimicrobial, and photoprotective effects,” LoGerfo says. But that’s not all. “It also increases the skin’s production of ceramides, which help strengthen the skin barrier, preventing loss of moisture,” King adds. This likely plays a big part in why this serum is so well-tolerated.

Although the product only recently launched, it’s already garnered hundreds of near-perfect reviews online, many of whom say the product helps with plumping and complexion. “This is the first bakuchiol product I’ve used. I have been using this in AM every other day. I think it layers really well. No weird feel after applying. It does make my skin feel more plump after applying and I have gotten many compliments about how beautiful my skin is recently. I do see a more even look from my skin- a glow from underneath,” one shopper writes.

“I’ve only been using this product two weeks and I can already tell my ’11s’ [lines between your eyebrows] are smoothing out!” another says.

BRB, adding several bottles to cart.

This Plumping ‘Facial in a Bottle’ Helped Me Turn a 3-Step Skin-Care Routine Into a Spa-Worthy Experience https://www.wellandgood.com/motif-phytoceramide-cleanser/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 17:00:50 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1028065 Any dermatologist will tell you that the key to healthy, glowing skin is a simple and consistent skin-care regimen—all you really need is a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning, and a cleanser, treatment, and moisturizer at night. But at a time when11-step routines have become the norm on social media, it’s easy to lose sight of what constitutes a “necessity.”

As someone who has spent a decade working in beauty, I switch up and expand my routine on a near-daily basis. While I always swatch test products first, I still only incorporate one or two new ones on my face at a time, all while maintaining the other skin-care steps that have been staples for years. Overall, this method has worked for me. But recently, I tried a new serum and sunscreen on my face at once, which sent me sprinting to my dermatologist with a sudden, inflamed rosacea flare (which was unlike anything I’d ever experienced before) paired with seborrheic dermatitis around my nostrils. And, as expected, the derm told me I needed to simplify my routine, STAT.

Here’s the thing though: When you’re using fewer products, a skin-care regimen can lose some of its luxurious luster, and can start to feel more like a chore than a spa-worthy experience. So to ensure that my nightly routine maintained its ritualistic nature, I set out to make a simple skin-care routine the ultimate form of self care, and the Motif Abundance Plumping Phytoceramide Cleanser ($65) helped me do it.

It’s a gentle cleanser made with botanicals like pineapple ceramides, white orchids, licorice root, monkey fruit wood, and fermented rice—all of which are ingredients that you’d typically find in pricey serums. It smells like it belongs in a spa and has a host of benefits beyond cleansing alone, so it felt like the perfect multitasking yet restorative product to add to my new paired-down routine.

My new simplified self-care skin-care ritual

After navigating my skin scare, I stripped down my nighttime routine to cleansing, treating, and moisturizing, per doctor’s orders. This meant cutting out my post-makeup double cleanse, limiting aggressive or superfluous treatments, and keeping things as basic as possible.

After two weeks of using a prescription sulfacetamide cleanser from my derm, careful consideration, and a desire to make my simple skin-care routine feel like more of a ritual, I was ready to try the new Motif Phytoceramide Cleanser. Along with it, I added steam, aromatherapy, lighting, and music to the agenda.

As someone who normally relies on micellar at the end of the day, transitioning my nighttime skincare routine into a steamy in-shower facial and full-body experience was nothing short of delightful. I set the mood by turning my shower on to a very toasty temp to let it steam up. I then turned off the lights, triggering my GE Color-Changing LED Night Light ($6) to go into effect, lit my Anecdote Candle Meditation Candle ($26), and turned on some soothing Bon Iver. After stepping into the shower, I sprayed five spritzes of the J.R. Watkins Sleep Aromatherapy In-Shower Mist ($15) and massaged the Motif Abundance Plumping Phytoceramide Cleanser, letting it act as a mask for a couple of minutes before washing it off.

That’s the beauty of this cleanser: It can be used like a classic face wash or left on a little longer, mask-style, to enhance its softening and brightening effects… and to help make your routine more mindful.

The texture of the formula is reminscent of a clay mask (but without the same sort of drying properties), and is infused with microscopic physically-exfoliating granules derived from dried luffa fruit. These, along with fermented rice and bromelaine (a pineapple enzyme which is “proven to soothe, reduce redness and brighten”), gently detoxify the skin without stripping it. While this is happening, phytoceramides plump skin and strengthen the barrier, while antioxidant-rich plants like white orchid and monkey fruit wood protect, brigthen, and fade hyperpigmentation

Despite being botanical-powered (something tha typically sends me running for the hills thanks to my irritation-prone skin) and exfoliating, this cleanser is dermatologist-developed and tested, so I had faith in incorporating it into my routine—even so soon after experiencing a skin scare like no other. And I’m so glad I did! This cleanser is one of a kind. It cleanses, hydrates, plumps, brightens, and smoothes, all while smelling faintly like a pro-grade facial, making it a great fit for my self-care nighttime routine goals. All in all, it’s a luxurious cleanser and one that I plan to pair with my new cozy nighttime routine for months to come.

These Hotels Are Making In-Room Fitness Core to Their Brand https://www.wellandgood.com/hotel-in-room-fitness-trend/ Sat, 04 Mar 2023 00:00:46 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1028447 If you’re like me, you like to make time to work out each and every day, even if it’s in short bursts. The problem is, when traveling, fitting in a sweat sesh often requires careful planning and high hopes of an uncrowded, well-stocked hotel gym—which doesn’t exactly align with the laid-back vibe of vacation.

That’s how it used to be, anyway. Nowadays, more and more hotels are recognizing the ever-growing interest in fitness and are working to cater to the wellness-minded client. Where some hotels have teamed up with popular studios to offer group fitness classes (Orangetheory partnered with The Boca Raton in 2018, for example), others are partnering with boutique fitness brands to upgrade their gyms (for example, Hilton has committed to adding at least one Peloton bike into each of its more than 5,000 fitness centers).

And now, still more hotels are going so far as to elevate not only their communal workout spaces, but also their in-room fitness offerings.

“We’re finding that travelers are seeking out elevated fitness amenities that can be customized to their bodies and physical goals—they require flexibility and convenience; the run-of-the-mill treadmill or on-site cardio class doesn’t cut it anymore,” says Steve Weitman, president of Wynn Las Vegas.

So, if you’ve been hoping to book a vacation that doesn’t derail your fitness goals, keep reading for eight hotels embracing in-room fitness in a major way.

1. Wynn Las Vegas

While Wynn Las Vegas has long catered to fitness enthusiasts with its 6,722-yard championship golf course and its partnership with SoulCycle and NutriDrip by Clean Market, and fitness center (recently revamped with state-of-the-art TechnoGym equipment), the brand’s new Wynn Living Well initiative, which it rolled out this January, makes the experience even more personal with in-room, 30-minute workouts from Amanda Kloots, founder of AK Fitness.

If digital workouts aren’t your thing, Wynn Las Vegas also offers guests the opportunity to book one-on-one treatment sessions with a TB12 Body Coach. “Co-founded by Tom Brady and his body coach Alex Guerrero, TB12 emphasizes muscle recovery and injury prevention through a holistic approach to pliability, nutrition, hydration, movement, and mental fitness to achieve longevity and pain-free living,” says Weitman.

2. EVEN Hotels

While many hotels are just now hopping on the trend of in-room fitness, EVEN has been dedicated to the idea since 2015. “Our in-room fitness is a top driver of preference among our target guest,” says Raul Ortiz, VP of global marketing and brand management for EVEN Hotels. “Currently, 80 percent of guests who book with us plan on working out in their room, and most actually do once they stay with us.”

All guest rooms offer an in-room fitness experience along with complimentary access to the latest on-demand classes, according to Ortiz. “During your stay, you can expect your room to be equipped with a yoga mat, yoga block, foam roller, resistance bands, and stability ball,” he says.

And that’s just for a standard accomodations. Deluxe rooms feature dedicated “fitness zones,” complete with wall hooks, TRX straps, and other equipment for strength and resistance training. Then there are premium rooms, which include an interactive spin bike, along with all the accouterments of the deluxe and standard rooms.

3. Proper Hotels

Wellness is a big part of the Proper Hotel experience, which is why the brand offers a vast array of spa treatments at its destination spas (Surya Spa in Santa Monica and Verbena Spa in Austin), along with complimentary weekend yoga and HIIT Classes. Additionally, each Proper Hotel has a state-of-the-art, 24-hour fitness center to offer guests a space to explore strength training, weight training, and cardio.

But most recently, Proper Hotels partnered with The Class, a cathartic workout experience beloved by celebrities like Emma Stone and New York City’s downtown sweat set, alike, to create an in-room fitness experience. What’s more, guests have the option to utilize Therabody percussive massage tools, yoga mats, and yoga bands (all of which are available upon request from the front desk). And if you stay in a suite, you’ll have the option for an in-room Peloton bike.

4. Hotel Esencia

Hotel Esencia is a 45-room boutique property just south of Mexico’s Playa del Carmen. There, in beachy paradise, guests have the option to book one of five rooftop wellness suites. Each one spans two floors and is equipped with the most luxurious fitness accommodations, including a lululemon Studio mirror, weight kit, and add-on options like a Peloton bike or treadmill. These suites also have their own rooftop pool, outdoor shower, and steam sauna—and they can be connected to suites below to create the ultimate group experience or family vacation.

5. Gansevoort Meatpacking

Planning a trip to New York City? Consider staying at Gansevoort Meatpacking, where guests receive complimentary access to a lululemon Studio mirror, and with it, the ability to choose from thousands of on-demand workouts, inlcuding options from top boutique fitness brands like Y7 Yoga, Rumble Boxing, and Pure Barre.

6. Westin

While some hotels include fitness or wellness as one of their core pillars, Westin operates on six pillars of well-being, including sleep, nutrition, movement, mindfulness, and more. From a fitness standpoint, Westin is known for its WestinWORKOUT® Gear Lending program. “The gear lending kits feature the latest in high-tech recovery and total body strength training equipment from our partners Hyperice and Bala, and can be used in-room, on-demand for an individualized experience,” says Jennifer Connell, global brand leader of Westin Hotels & Resorts and vice president of distinctive premium brands for Marriott International. Additionally, guests can book WestinWORKOUT Guestrooms, in which they’ll have access to their very own Peloton for the duration of their stay.

7. Conrad Nashville

No need to forego your fitness goal while visiting Music City. At Conrad Nashville, guests can book one of five wellness rooms, all of which feature the latest and greatest in fitness equipment, including an Echelon Reflect Smart Mirror, Peloton bike, and free weights, along with a curated minibar created with the wellness lover in mind.

“We have partnered with some of the best health and fitness experts and a cost comes with that, but a luxury traveler who is committed to fitness even while away from home is a segment that we feel needs to be accommodated,” says John Stack, Conrad Nashville’s director of sales and marketing.

8. Montage Kapalua Bay

I Rediscovered My Love of the Gym With Whitney Simmons’ Alive Workout App https://www.wellandgood.com/whitney-simmons-alive-app/ Thu, 02 Mar 2023 19:00:43 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1027587 In college and in the three years that followed, I was nothing short of a gym rat. I would wake up between 5 and 6 a.m. every day like clockwork to ensure that I’d be able to lift before class. I kept it up post-college to ensure that I could maintain my fitness goals despite working 60- to 70-hour weeks. For me, lifting was the ultimate outlet; the very best stress reliever.

But somewhere between a toxic relationship, processing the end of it, trying to maintain a social life, and working myself to the point of burnout in my final years living in New York, I lost sight of that. Or, more accurately, I just didn’t feel like I had the time or energy, nor the confidence, to craft new workouts, walk into what was once my favorite place on Earth, and work myself through reps and sets to the point of exhaustion.

Instead, I started doing trainer-led boutique fitness classes that took the thought out of working out. It was one less thing to think about; I could just show up and do what I was told. And that worked for me for the past six years—but it never gave me the same thrill (or feeling of strength) that lifting heavy weights did.

I’ve been following mega fit-fluencer Whitney Simmons for a while now, and recently began seeing and hearing a lot about her Alive program. I figured, what the hell, I’d give it a try. Long story short: It reignited my love for the gym, and ultimately instilled more confidence in myself.

What is the Alive app?

The Alive app is brimming with over 100 daily workouts to choose from, all of which are between five and 60 minutes long. The options cover a full-body range of categories, including HIIT, Upper, Legs, Push, and Pull options. There are also 33 Warm Ups and Cool Downs, ranging from five to eight minutes.

The app also has challenges that last between 30 and 45 days, and programs that span four to 10 weeks. In both cases, there are beginner, intermediate, and advanced options, so users can tailor how difficult the challenge or program will be.

Users can jot down their thoughts in the in-app journal at any point, and are encouraged to with prompts in the challenges and programs. Meanwhile, the Journey section lets users keep track of the number of workouts and any achievement badges earned.

The Alive & Thrive Challenge

Like so many, I wanted to kickstart the year with health and wellness at the forefront of my mind. After feeling less fulfilled by Orangetheory (my chosen fitness class for the past two years, which I typically attended three to four times per week) and more energized by the idea of switching things up, I bought a gym membership and downloaded the Alive app. For $14.99 per month, a whole world of fitness possibilities opened up to me, and I couldn’t wait to get started.

To kick things off, I signed up for the Alive & Thrive Challenge, a 45-day regimen with four lifting days, one mobility day, and two rest days (accompanied by journal prompts) per week. I opted for the intermediate level and was met with a series of four 45-minute workouts (plus warm-up and cool-down exercises) per week. To get cardio in, I would start each workout with a one-mile treadmill strut.

Here’s what I loved most about this challenge—and the Alive app as a whole:

  • It builds routines for you, making it easy to start and stick to a fitness regimen.
  • It provides detailed workouts with muscle diagrams for each exercise, so you know exactly what you’re working on.
  • Each exercise has an instructional video, so if you’ve never done a lift or used a specific machine (or if, like me, it’s been a while and you’ve forgotten), you can see how to do it from multiple angles.
  • The app lets you track the weights used and remembers them for future workouts.
  • Within each workout, you have the option to move exercises around beforehand, so you can perform it in your chosen order.
  • There is an alternate exercise for every move, so you can modify and still get the intended muscle development.
  • The app provides workout summaries at the end of each lift, which are colorful and encouraging and can be directly shared to social media if you want.

Taking on this challenge got me out of my comfort zone and back into the gym. It switched things up every day, which meant that it was never boring—I never felt the urge to skip.

Unfortunately, during the last week of the challenge, I got sick and ended up missing three workouts. I planned to make them up the following week but, as it turns out, you can’t retroactively complete them if the end date has passed. (Womp womp.) Still, I finished with a 90% Gold completion rate, so no complaints here.

Is Whitney Simmons’ Alive app worth it?

In my opinion: Absolutely. As someone who loves to work out individually but also loves guidance, the Alive app contains everything you need to build new fitness habits, discover new exercises, and expand your knowledge of machines, lifts, and muscle movement in general. And since it has all the instructional videos you could hope for without volume or unnecessary commentary, it streamlines the learning process. Personally, I found that it made re-entering a classic gym easier than ever. (And after six years of avoiding it, that’s really saying something.)

Whitney’s personality also has something to do with the appeal. She’s quite entertaining, not to mention relatable. Whether it’s her openness surrounding living with psoriasis, or her GRWM reels or mic’d-up videos, she’s a genuine joy to follow—and I feel like that’s not always (read: rarely) the case with influencers in the 3 million+ realm.

Now, I’d be remiss not to mention: The biggest negative feedback surrounding the app (on Reddit, at least), is that Whitney Simmons isn’t actually a certified trainer. (And to my knowledge, she’s never claimed to be.) She is, however, a dedicated fitness influencer who has been working out religiously for years, not to mention a Gymshark and Alani Nu athlete.

For me personally, I’m okay with the fact that she’s not a CPT. That doesn’t mean that she can’t share what she knows, and what’s worked for her. After all, after 45 days following Whitney’s suggestions, I’ve found that it’s worked for me, too: I feel energized, uplifted, and ready to take on my next challenge. Only this time, it will be in the form of the 10-week Alive Strong program.

I Tried the TikTok-Famous Treadmill Strut, and It Actually Made Me Crave *More* Time on the Tread https://www.wellandgood.com/treadmill-strut-workout/ Wed, 01 Mar 2023 22:00:33 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1027433 Trends on “FitTok” come and go. But the viral Treadmill Strut has been going strong for almost two years now. The workout involves “strutting” (aka walking, but maybe with a bit of ‘tude) on a treadmill, incrementally increasing your speed by .1 mile per hour every time the song changes.

While you can absolutely apply the technique to any playlist, TikToker Allie Bennett, who’s the mastermind behind the workouts, has crafted more than a dozen for followers to strut along with—including an Affirmations Strut, Selena Gomez Strut, and Midnights Strut, all of which indicate which speed to start at for the most empowering, beat-driven gait. She picks each song strategically so the tempo matches your prescribed pace. Most of her playlists are about 30 minutes long (with some stretching up to an hour).

Now’s when I tell you that I’ve tried almost all of them. The reason? After scrolling through Bennett’s feed (and her Spotify), I started to wonder how incorporating the treadmill strut into my own workout routine could impact my body and mind. There was only one way to find out.

How I strut

Since I was already embarking on a weight lifting challenge when I got the idea to start strutting, I used Bennett’s walking workouts as a warm-up. Though, after just one walk-through, I decided to modify it. Walking on a treadmill with zero incline feels unnatural to me after years of having to be on at least level one at Orangetheory, not to mention after becoming a fan of the 12-3-30 workout (despite it sometimes being damn near impossible to do—I mean really, who knew walking could be such a heart-pumping workout?).

While Bennett suggests certain speeds to start at, she doesn’t mention anything about incline. After trying it on zero once, I decided to add my own twist to the treadmill strut. (Friendly reminder that there’s no shame in doing what works best for you when working out.) To make the walking workout a bit more difficult in an effort to boost my heart rate and better awaken my muscles before lifting, I chose to start each strut at a level five incline and bump it up every time I increased my speed. (Admittedly, I was overzealous and tried to do the entire strut on level 12 the second time I did the workout. Yeah, it wasn’t exactly sustainable.)

I strutted this way as a warm-up four days a week (on lift days), and let it serve as my main workout on my mobility day. The other two days of the week, I laid off because rest is essential, y’all.

Here’s the thing though: Strutting on a treadmill is so fun—especially when paired with Bennett’s playlists—that on my off-days, I’d find myself wanting to run to the gym solely for the tread. Fortunately for me, around the third week of my experiment, my Bowflex Tread 22 arrived, and I started lacing up my lululemon Blissfeel sneakers (my new all-time faves alongside the Chargefeels—truly, they kept my feet, shins, and joints happy as can be while I was consistently spending more time than ever before on a tread). That meant I could strut whenever I dang well pleased. In doing so, I ended up strutting twice per day on most of my lifting days, because in addition to being a great warm-up, I found the technique to be particularly uplifting during a mid-day slump.

Now, in some instances—whether I had gotten to the gym later than intended or I simply didn’t have the time between deadlines to strut for 30 minutes in my basement—I’d cut the strut down. Instead of walking for the full playlist, I’d increase the speed and incline for a mile and call it quits. Even then, though, I found that it gave me a quick burst of energy that left me craving more.

The final verdict

Point blank: Allie Bennett’s treadmill strut technique is a game-changer. Not only does it make the treadmill less boring, it also serves as an infinitely-modifiable warm-up or standalone workout. And, when paired with her well thought-out playlists, strutting can become a powerful emotional outlet. Did my body look different after adding these walking workouts? Not really. Did I feel notably more energized and warmed-up? 100 percent. I even experienced less muscle soreness from lifting.

If you decide to start strutting yourself, take my word: The Yeehaw! Treadmill Strut is iconic and so well-timed. It starts with Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” passes through Taylor Swift’s “Picture to Burn” and “Gaslighter” by The Chicks, before concluding with Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats.” It’s so good that you won’t want to strut to anything else.

I’ve Never Been Able To Find a Bronzer That Looked Natural On My Fair, Cool-Toned Skin Until I Tried Jones Road’s Latest Launch https://www.wellandgood.com/jones-road-the-bronzer/ Mon, 27 Feb 2023 00:00:07 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1024797 As someone with cool, pink-tinted fair skin, it can be challenging to find a bronzer that fully complements my complexion. Sure, tons of bronzers exist, but even the brands that offer shades for light, medium, and dark skin tones often fall short in the undertones department. It’s not all that surprising considering bronzer is designed to add warmth to the skin, but still, I’ve always thought it would be nice to find a shade that delivers a healthy-looking glow on cool-toned skin without looking noticeable like makeup. Well folks, let’s skip the small talk: Jones Road has done it.

First, some backstory: Jones Road is the brainchild of celebrity makeup artist Bobbi Brown. Launched in 2020, the beauty brand aims to cater to common complexion needs in the simplest, cleanest, most inclusive way possible. One example: The Jones Road Miracle Balm is designed to be applied with your fingers and serve as a one-stop shop for no-makeup makeup. (And according to one Well+Good writer, it truly is a miracle product.)

The brand’s latest launch, the Jones Road Bronzer ($35) is a velvety powder that somehow feels creamy upon application. Two years in the making, this bronzer newcomer blends effortlessly into skin for a natural-looking, non-shimmery finish. Best of all, it’s sold in seven shades, including both warm and cool options.

As for me, I tried the Dusty Rose and Light Tan options (the two lightest shades of the range) and have truly never found a more perfect match than the Dusty Rose. While I like both colors and found them easy to blend in for a sun-kissed finish, the Dusty Rose shade is indiscernible from my natural skin tone. When applied on my cheekbones and along the “magic-3” contour (where you swoop from your forehead to the hollow of your cheeks to your jawline, following the shape of the number three), my skin looks flawlessly tanned; it doesn’t look harshly contoured or caked in makeup. To say that I’m impressed is an understatement.

But hey, don’t just trust me. Plenty of shoppers are singing this bronzer’s praises, too.

“I have a very fair complexion, so finding a bronzer to add a little color without looking orange is difficult,” one shopper admits. “This [Dusty Rose] is perfect. It adds a little bit of color that looks natural and is also great for blush and eyeshadow.”

“These are by far my favorite bronzers,” another shopper marvels. “I am light to fair and I tend to skip the application of bronzers due to the artificial look on my skin. These are different—they blend well and give my face a beautiful finish. I look forward to applying these with or without foundation, they are a must in my makeup routine.”

“I’ve tried so many bronzers most of which are way too dark or orange and have a shimmer to them,” another shopper shares. “This is the perfect shade and goes on perfectly. And for me the best part about it…. It Stays on! Definitely recommend.”

Suffice to say, if you thought your skin was too fair for bronzer, Jone Road is here to change the narrative.

Angel Number 222 Is a Sign To Reprioritize Your Responsibilities https://www.wellandgood.com/angel-number-222/ Wed, 22 Feb 2023 13:02:27 +0000 https://www.wellandgood.com/?p=1013007 Have you ever been distracted thinking about something you have to do, hope to do, or have been dreading to do, only to snap out of it and notice that you’re surrounded by repeating numbers? Maybe it’s in your car and you notice the plate in front of you is all 2s, or maybe your ETA just updated and says you’re two hours and two minutes away from your destination. What if all this happen on February 22 (2/22)?

While you might automatically think it’s a coincidence, some part of you may be stopped in your tracks, as you wonder if it might mean more. Well, according to numerologists, it very well could. The reason? Numbers carry meaning beyond their sums. That’s the idea behind angel numbers, at least—and it’s a concept that’s absolutely captivated the world as of late (on TikTok alone, mentions of #angelnumbers have surpassed 1.5 billion).

Society’s fascination with angel numbers have reached the point where people are finding meaning in each and every digit. That said, according to numerologist Joy Woodward, the author of A Beginner’s Guide to Numerology, true angel numbers are repeating digits, most often in groups of three or four. These numbers offer guidance and messages from the Divine,” she says. “When they appear, they are asking you to pay attention, offering support or guidance.”

With that in mind, we’re taking a deep dive into numeral sequences and today’s lucky number is 222. Keep reading to learn what it means and what to do if you see it everywhere you go.

What is the meaning of angel number 222?

“In numerology, the number two represents partnerships, balance, harmony, and relations,” says numerologist, astrologist, and tarot reader Vannessa Williams, of Beyond Your Sun Sign. When that number is tripled, you get the angel number 222, which is a symbol of balance—with others and with yourself, and with all your responsibilities.

It’s a sign that you need to step back and reevaluate how the partnerships in your life are affecting your overall emotional well-being. Do you feel balanced? Do you notice an imbalance? Are you overextending yourself? Could you be doing more to achieve interpersonal work goals? Ask yourself these questions and take note of how you answer because at the end of the day, the angel number 222 is all about coming back into alignment. It can be a recognition that you’re aligned with the people and projects in your life and are on the right path, or it can be a sign that something’s out of sync and it’s time to prioritize feeling aligned.

“Spiritually, the angel number 222 is a reminder that although our responsibilities are important it is not our duty to maintain harmony for everyone,” Williams adds. “The angel number 222 sees how much you have been trying to balance it all and wants to reward your efforts with recognition.” (Love the meaning of angel number 222 and the idea of angel numbers as a whole? Show your fascination and cozy style with the Mayfair Group Angel Number Crewneck).

What is the significance of the date 2/22?

Dates with repeating numbers happen every month so you might not think there’s anything special about them. In reality, those dates are just another form of angel numbers, meaning they harness the same energy and can be the perfect opportunity to harness (or be reminded of) the characteristics of the number.

Take February 22 (2/22), for example. “On this day we will feel a collective inspiration to balance out our duties and responsibilities with others,” Williams says. “This balance will be nurturing and will create harmony within our relationships.”

Still not convinced that angel number 2 plays a role in relational happenings on February 22? Get this: On 2/22/1973, the U.S. and China agreed to establish liaison offices in Beijing and Washington, D.C. And on 2/22/1996, Halle Berry and David Justice filed for divorce. Both examples of how relationships can come together or fizzle out, and both examples of how angel number 2 has unmistakable relational energy.
